Know the current development status
The store description says the game supports solo play and online co-op for up to seven friends, with survival, crafting, building, and exploration across different biomes. It lists Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system. Because the normal Steam release is still marked “coming soon,” a playtest defect is not necessarily evidence that your installation is permanently damaged.
Two dated playtest fixes are particularly relevant:
- An April 17, 2026 hotfix fixed a crash caused by swapping an item after dragging it from storage that had already been destroyed.
- An April 20, 2026 hotfix addressed host fog that could make the world almost impossible to see.
If your symptom matches either case, update before trying complicated workarounds. Reproducing an old build can make a fixed title bug look like a current hardware failure.
Check the hardware and software requirements
Compare your computer with Steam’s published requirements before spending time on graphics tweaks. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate, but falling below the listed GPU, memory, DirectX, or operating-system requirement can prevent software troubleshooting from solving the problem.

Check the exact model rather than assuming that a laptop’s “gaming” label is sufficient. A machine with less than 16 GB of RAM, an older graphics card, or no DirectX 12 support is below the published baseline. Freeing disk space helps installation and updates, but it does not replace the required GPU or memory.

Use this safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Record the failure before changing anything
- Note whether the failure occurs at launch, while loading a world, during exploration, during co-op connection, or during saving.
- Record the game build shown by Steam, your Windows version, CPU, GPU, installed RAM, and graphics-driver version.
- Write down the world name, player or host role, location, and the action immediately before the crash or freeze.
- Capture an error message or screenshot if one appears. If the whole computer freezes, note whether audio continues and whether Windows recovers.
This record prevents different problems from being mixed together and gives the developer a reproducible case.
2. Fully restart Steam and the computer
- Exit the game.
- Open Steam’s menu and choose the option to exit Steam completely, not merely close its window.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam again and wait for any TROLLHEIM: GNOMES update to finish before pressing Play.
A complete restart clears a stuck Steam process and ensures that a pending playtest hotfix is loaded. Do not diagnose an old executable when Steam has an update waiting.
3. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates

4. Verify the local game files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click TROLLHEIM: GNOMES and choose Properties.

5. Remove performance variables when the game freezes
Steam recommends checking requirements, adjusting in-game video options, and returning the graphics card to its factory-default settings for random freezes.

- Try windowed mode instead of exclusive full-screen.
- Disable non-essential overlays, recording tools, hardware-monitoring overlays, and background utilities temporarily.
- Open your GPU control software and select the factory-default profile; remove manual overclocks, undervolts, and forced per-game settings.
- Test the same area after each change rather than changing every option at once.
If lowering settings stops the freeze, the symptom is more consistent with a performance or driver-profile limit than with a damaged save. If the entire PC locks even at reduced settings and factory defaults, document that distinction for support; it may indicate a system-level stability problem.
6. Test launch and loading failures separately
For a failure before the main menu, first complete the restart, update, requirement, driver, and file-verification steps. Then disable non-essential background software and test again. For a failure while loading one world, create a temporary new solo world. Do not overwrite or delete the original world while testing. A new world that loads normally points toward world-specific data or a title bug; if every world fails, the installation, driver, or system is more likely involved.
7. Isolate solo, host, and client behavior
The game supports online co-op for up to seven friends, so reproduce the symptom in controlled roles:
- Launch a new or known-good world solo and visit the area where the problem occurs.
- Have another player join while you are the host and repeat the test.
- Join that player’s world as a client and repeat the same action.
- Compare which machine displays the crash, freeze, or visibility problem.
If only a host sees unusually dense fog, update first because the April 20, 2026 hotfix specifically addressed host fog. If only one client fails, compare that computer’s driver, settings, and background utilities with the working machine. If both players fail at the same action in the same world, preserve the exact sequence for a title-bug report.

Known TROLLHEIM: GNOMES issues and what they mean
Storage-destruction item-swap crash
The April 17, 2026 playtest hotfix fixed a crash that could occur when a player dragged an item from storage, the storage object was destroyed, and the player then swapped the item. If your crash follows that sequence, confirm that Steam installed the hotfix before attempting another test. Avoid deliberately repeating the action on an unupdated build because it can corrupt the test result and may put the world at further risk.
Host fog that obscures the world
The April 20, 2026 hotfix addressed fog that could become so dense for a server host that the world was nearly impossible to see. Update the host and all clients, restart Steam, and retest. If the problem remains only for one host, capture the build number, world, biome, and whether clients can see normally.
What is not established
No authoritative crash-rate or freeze-rate statistic has been published. A SteamDB peak of 11 concurrent playtest players on April 16, 2026 is a player-count measure, not a reliability measurement. It cannot be used to estimate how often the game crashes.

Save problems require a different standard of caution. The available official material does not publish a TROLLHEIM: GNOMES save-folder path, backup procedure, rollback command, or confirmed recovery tool. That means a generic instruction to delete a folder, disable Steam Cloud, or reinstall could remove the only usable copy.

Escalate with a report that can be reproduced
When the sequence above does not resolve the issue, contact the game’s support channel through its Steam library or community links. Include:
- Windows edition and version
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics-driver version
- Exact TROLLHEIM: GNOMES build and whether you are using the public playtest branch
