Most crashes, loading freezes, and black screens in a Total War remaster can be isolated without reinstalling Windows or buying new hardware. Start with reversible checks: verify the Steam installation, remove every mod, restart, update Windows and the graphics driver, force the dedicated GPU, and test overlay and security conflicts. If the installation is intact, reset the game’s per-user files in AppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>. Only after those steps should you edit preferences.script.txt; back it up first. A clean failure with an exact error message and the crash report gives SEGA Support the information needed for escalation.
What to do first when the remaster crashes or shows a black screen
Use this order because each stage separates a different class of fault while keeping your changes reversible:
- Confirm the PC meets the remaster’s minimum requirements. Check the requirements for your exact title and edition before changing settings.
- Verify the Steam files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces missing or corrupted installation data.
- Remove all modifications. Unsubscribe from Workshop items and delete files manually added to the game directory. Test once with a completely unmodded installation.
- Restart Windows and update the software stack. Install pending Windows updates and the current graphics driver from your GPU or laptop manufacturer.
- Force the high-performance GPU. On a laptop or hybrid-graphics desktop, make sure the remaster uses the dedicated GPU rather than an energy-saving integrated adapter.
- Test conflicts. Temporarily test antivirus or firewall interference and disable Steam Overlay while diagnosing.
- Repair runtimes and permissions. Run the Visual C++ installers in Steam’s
_CommonRedistvcredistfolder, then try the game executable as administrator. - Reset per-user data. Rename the game folder under
C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>so the game creates clean preferences and caches. - Recover graphics settings. If a graphics change triggered the crash, back up and edit
preferences.script.txtin the game’sscriptsdirectory.
Do not change several advanced settings at once. A restart and one test after each stage tells you which change solved the problem.
Why Total War remasters crash, freeze, or go black
The symptom usually points to one of four layers:

A freeze on a loading screen and a black window are diagnostic states, not proof that the graphics card has failed. Work through the same isolation sequence before replacing hardware.

Step 1: Confirm requirements and verify the Steam installation
Check the minimum requirements for your exact remaster
Compare your Windows version, processor, memory, graphics adapter, available storage, and graphics memory with the requirements published for the specific remaster. A machine can start the launcher yet fail when a campaign or battle loads if it runs short of memory or VRAM. Close other demanding applications before the first test.
Verify files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the Total War remaster and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game once before changing any other setting.
Verification repairs the installed game data; it does not rebuild preferences stored in your Windows profile. If the files verify successfully but the same crash remains, continue to the per-user reset rather than repeatedly verifying.
Step 2: Remove every mod, including files installed outside Workshop
Unsubscribe and clean the game directory
Unsubscribe from all Steam Workshop items for the remaster. Then inspect the game’s installation directory for manually added mod files and remove them or move them to a backup folder outside the game. Mods made for an older release, a different Total War title, or a different platform build can prevent startup, break loading, or crash only when a particular campaign or battle asset is requested.

After unsubscribing and removing manual files, restart Steam and run the game with no enabled modifications. Do not restore mods one at a time until the unmodded game can reach the main menu and load a test campaign. If the clean copy works, add modifications back individually and launch after each addition; the last item restored is the practical suspect.
SEGA Support’s General Troubleshooting guidance, updated 28 April 2026, states: “If you have any modifications installed, please remove them.” Treat that instruction as a diagnostic requirement, not merely a suggestion.

Step 3: Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, install available updates, restart, and check again until Windows reports that it is current. An outdated system can cause lag, system errors, or a system crash, according to SEGA Support’s TOTAL WAR TROUBLESHOOTING – STEAM page, updated 5 March 2026.
Install the correct driver from the manufacturer
Download the current driver for the exact GPU model from the GPU manufacturer or, on a laptop, the laptop manufacturer’s support page. A laptop vendor’s package can include the switching logic needed to route the game to the dedicated adapter. Restart after installation and test the unmodded game before adding overlays or tuning utilities.
Force the dedicated or high-performance GPU
Hybrid systems may launch the remaster on an integrated, energy-saving adapter. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game executable if it is not listed, choose Options, select High performance, and save. If your laptop manufacturer supplies a separate graphics-control panel, set the same executable to the high-performance or discrete GPU there as well. Connect the power adapter during testing and restart the game.
Step 4: Eliminate overlays, antivirus, and firewall conflicts
Disable Steam Overlay for the test
- In Steam, right-click the game in Library and choose Properties.
- On the General page, turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Launch the remaster and reproduce the crash, freeze, or black screen.
If the failure disappears, leave the overlay disabled while playing or re-enable it later to confirm whether a particular overlay feature is responsible. Other capture, monitoring, chat, or overclocking overlays can interfere too; close them for the clean test.
Test security software without weakening the PC permanently
Antivirus and firewall products can block Steam or the game executable. Temporarily pause protection only long enough to launch a trusted, fully updated installation, disconnecting from untrusted networks if your security product requires it. If the game starts only during that test, restore protection immediately and add targeted exclusions for Steam and the remaster executable through the security product’s normal interface. Do not leave broad, permanent exclusions or disabled protection in place.

A failed security test does not prove the product is defective; it shows that a rule, quarantine event, or controlled-folder policy needs review. Check the product’s event log for the blocked executable before creating an exclusion.

Step 5: Repair Visual C++ components and Windows permissions
Repair the Visual C++ redistributables supplied with Steam
Close the game and Steam if necessary, then open the remaster’s installation directory and navigate to _CommonRedistvcredist. Run the Visual C++ installer packages there and choose Repair when that option is offered; install a package if it is missing. Restart Windows and test again. Use the files supplied with the game rather than downloading an unrelated runtime from an unverified site.
Try the executable as administrator
Locate the game executable, right-click it, choose Properties → Compatibility, select Run this program as an administrator, and apply the change for a test launch. This can bypass a permissions problem that prevents startup or prevents the game from writing required files. If it makes no difference, clear the setting afterward so normal Steam launching remains the default.
Step 6: Reset corrupted per-user data in AppData
When Steam reports a healthy installation but the remaster still crashes, freezes, or displays a black screen, the fault may be in preferences or cached data stored for your Windows account.
Back up saves and rename the folder
- Exit the game and Steam completely.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%AppData%The Creative Assemblyin the address bar. - Find the folder for the affected remaster.
- Copy the folder to a safe backup location, especially if it contains saves or custom files.
- Rename the original folder, for example by adding
.oldto its name. - Start the game. It should create a fresh folder with default preferences and cache data.
Renaming is safer than deleting because it preserves a rollback copy. If the game now works, restore only files you have identified as necessary, testing after each restoration. A damaged preference or cache file can reintroduce the crash; do not copy the entire old folder back at once.

Step 7: Recover from a graphics-setting crash
If the crash began immediately after changing resolution, quality, display mode, or another graphics option, edit the configuration only after making a backup.
Back up and edit preferences.script.txt
- Close the game.
- Open the game’s
scriptsdirectory and copypreferences.script.txtto another folder. - Open the original file in a plain-text editor.
- Change only the setting that caused the failure, returning resolution, display mode, or quality to a known-safe value.
- Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Launch the game and confirm that it reaches the menu before adjusting anything else.
Do not paste configuration lines from a different Total War title or release. If the file becomes unreadable or the game still fails, restore the backup or use the AppData reset to generate fresh settings. SEGA’s Graphics FAQs identify this file as the recovery point for a crash triggered by a graphics-option change.
Step 8: Address freezes and black screens caused by VRAM pressure
Recognize the pattern
VRAM or out-of-memory pressure is more likely when the game reaches a battle or loading screen, freezes after loading a large scene, or turns black after a quality increase while the rest of Windows remains responsive. Creative Assembly notes that the game may adjust graphics during loading to avoid out-of-memory crashes.
Lower the demanding settings first
- Lower output resolution or render scale.
- Reduce texture, shadow, vegetation, and unit-detail quality.
- Close browsers, recording tools, and other applications that consume graphics memory.
- Restart the game after applying changes so the graphics allocation is rebuilt.
Do not raise settings again until a campaign and a representative battle load reliably. A black screen that persists at the lowest stable settings should be treated as an installation, driver, overlay, or per-user-data problem and tested through the earlier steps.

- The exact error text, including punctuation or an error code.
- Whether the failure occurs on launch, at the menu, during campaign loading, or in a battle.
- Whether it is a crash, a permanent freeze, or a black screen with sound or cursor activity.
- Your Windows version, GPU model, driver version, and whether the system uses integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Whether Steam verification completed successfully and whether all Workshop and manual mods were removed.
- Which overlay, antivirus, firewall, runtime, AppData, and graphics-setting tests you performed and what changed.
Attach the crash report found at %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>crash_report. Supplying the report and exact reproduction point is more useful than saying only that the game “doesn’t work,” because support can correlate the failure with the affected subsystem.
Reversible checks versus advanced changes

Questions players commonly ask
Will verifying files fix a black screen?
It fixes missing or corrupted installation data, but a black screen can also come from a saved display setting, wrong GPU, overlay, driver, or per-user cache. Verify first, then follow the graphics and AppData branches if the screen remains black.
Should I reinstall the whole game immediately?
No. Verification, a clean mod test, runtime repair, and an AppData reset isolate the common causes without discarding the entire installation. Reinstall only after those checks or when Steam cannot complete verification.

Yes. Workshop subscriptions can update or load dependencies, and manually installed files remain in the game directory. Unsubscribe and remove manual files before judging whether the base game works.
Why does the game run on a laptop’s integrated GPU?
Windows or the laptop’s power policy may classify the game as an energy-saving application. Set the executable to High performance in Settings → System → Display → Graphics, connect AC power, and restart the game.
Where are the files support needs?
Per-user data is under %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>; the crash report is in its crash_report subfolder. Include that report with the exact error and the point at which the failure occurs.
