Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The fastest way to clear “Could Not Retrieve Server ID” in 7 Days to Die is to repair the connection in layers: put the client and dedicated server on the same build, permit both programs through Windows Firewall, forward TCP port 26900 and UDP ports 26900–26903, test antivirus blocking, then restart and verify that the server is registered and actually online. Change Easy Anti-Cheat only as a last-resort workaround, because turning it off removes a security protection and can prevent crossplay.
The instructions below combine the fixes repeatedly reported in community guides and forum discussions. They are secondary-source guidance rather than a developer troubleshooting statement, so router menus and hosting-panel labels can differ.

What the error means
When the game says it could not retrieve a server ID, the client has not completed the discovery or registration handshake needed to join the server. The message does not, by itself, prove that your world save is damaged. A blocked executable, unreachable port, mismatched game build, failed Steam registration, an offline private server, or an anti-cheat mismatch can all stop the same handshake.
Work through the checks in order. Do not start by disabling security software or changing anti-cheat settings; those steps can hide the underlying network problem.

Use this repair order first
- Check that the player copy and the server are running the same game build.
- Allow the game and the dedicated-server program through Windows Firewall.
- Forward TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903 to the computer running the server.
- Temporarily test whether antivirus is blocking the game, then create an exclusion instead of leaving antivirus disabled.
- Close the game, stop and start the server, reboot the router, and try again.
- Confirm the server is started, registered with Steam, using the intended IP and password, and supplied with any required GSLT token.
- Only for a controlled compatibility test, change
EACEnabled; restore protection when the test is complete.
1. Put the client and server on the same build
A version mismatch is one of the most common explanations for a failed server-ID request. This includes the game build shown in Steam and the build installed for a dedicated server. An Easy Anti-Cheat mismatch is also reported as a symptom of the client and server being on different builds, although the exact mechanism is not documented in the available guidance.
Check the player installation
- Exit 7 Days to Die completely.
- In Steam, open the game’s properties and check the selected branch under the Betas or version controls. Both players and the server must use the same branch.
- Run Steam’s file-integrity check for the client, then allow Steam to finish every pending update before launching the game.
Check the dedicated server
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Update its installation through the same Steam branch or server-management method used to install it.
- Compare the server’s reported build with the client’s build. Do not rely on the fact that both installations were downloaded at the same time; one may have been updated while the other was not.
- Start the server only after the update has finished, then test the connection again.
If the server uses mods or DLL changes, first reproduce the problem with a matching, unmodified client and server. A mod that requires Easy Anti-Cheat to be off can create a separate compatibility condition, covered below.
2. Allow both programs through Windows Firewall
Windows can block the game after an initial “Allow access” prompt was declined. Create rules for the player executable and the dedicated-server executable; allowing only one of them can leave the server invisible or unreachable.
Create an inbound program rule
- Press
Win+R, enterwf.msc, and press Enter to open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security. - Select Inbound Rules, then New Rule….
- Choose Program, browse to the 7 Days to Die game executable, and select Allow the connection.
- Apply the rule to the network profiles you actually use. A private home network is normally sufficient; do not select public networks unless the server must be reachable there.
- Name the rule clearly, such as “7 Days to Die client,” and finish it.
- Repeat the process for the dedicated-server executable in the server installation directory.
The executable filename and installation path can differ between a Steam client and a dedicated-server tool, so browse to the file rather than guessing a path.
Check for an existing block
In Inbound Rules, sort or filter for entries containing the game or server name. Disable or edit an explicit Block the connection rule that takes precedence over your allow rule. If your organization uses restrictive outbound rules, create corresponding outbound allow rules under Outbound Rules; on a normal home Windows installation, outbound traffic is usually allowed by default.

- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.

- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.
Confirm the active network profile
If Windows marks your home network as Public, a rule limited to the Private profile will not apply. Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi‑Fi or Ethernet → the connected network and verify the profile, or apply the firewall rule only to the profile you intentionally use.

3. Forward the required ports
For a server behind a home router, the router must send incoming traffic to the server computer’s local address. The safest port combination consistently documented in the available guidance is:
| Traffic | Port(s) | Purpose and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| TCP | 26900 | Game port identified by the Valve Developer Community guidance. |
| UDP | 26900–26903 | Documented server range; some community pages list 26901–26903 in addition to the game port, which is why the complete range is shown. |
Set the forwarding rule
- Give the server computer a reserved DHCP lease or static LAN address so the destination does not change after a reboot.
- Sign in to the router and open its Port Forwarding, NAT, or Virtual Server page. The label varies by manufacturer.
- Create one rule for TCP 26900 and one rule covering UDP 26900–26903, both targeting the server computer’s LAN address. Use the same external and internal ports unless your setup deliberately translates them.
- Save or apply the configuration, then restart the router if it requests a reboot.
- Make sure the Windows Firewall rules allow the same traffic. Router forwarding cannot bypass a host firewall.
If ServerPort in the server configuration has been changed from 26900, forward that custom port instead and use it consistently in the server, router, and connection details. Do not add unverified LAN-discovery ranges solely because they appear in an isolated forum snippet.
Account for double NAT
If an internet provider’s gateway feeds a second router, forwarding on only the inner router may not work. Either place the second router in access-point/bridge mode or forward the same ports through both devices. A server that works for computers on the same LAN but not for an outside player is especially suggestive of NAT or forwarding trouble.
Linux host firewall example
One community example uses the following UFW commands:
Rank #3
- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
sudo ufw allow 26900:26903/tcp
sudo ufw allow 26900:26903/udp
This opens a broader TCP range than the minimum TCP 26900 recommendation. Review the rules with your host’s security policy and narrow them if only TCP 26900 is required. Hosting panels and other Linux firewalls may use different commands.
4. Test antivirus interference safely
Security software can quarantine or block a game component even when Windows Firewall is configured correctly. Use disabling only as a short diagnostic test, not as a permanent fix.
- Close the game and stop the server.
- Temporarily pause the third-party antivirus or endpoint protection according to its own controls. Keep the test as brief as possible and avoid browsing or downloading while protection is paused.
- Start the server and attempt one connection.
- If the error disappears, re-enable antivirus immediately and add the main 7 Days to Die game folder—and the dedicated-server folder, if separate—to the product’s exclusions or allowed-app list.
- Run a fresh scan and retry with protection enabled.
If disabling antivirus makes no difference, restore it and remove any temporary exception you created. Do not treat a successful test as proof that antivirus is the only cause; it establishes only that its filtering is involved.
5. Restart in a clean sequence
A stale server process, router session, or authentication state can preserve the error after a configuration change. Use this order so each component starts with the new settings:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Exit the game and Steam.
- Stop the dedicated server and wait for its process to close. If it does not exit normally, end it through the host’s service manager as a last resort.
- Power-cycle the router: disconnect power, wait for it to finish shutting down, reconnect it, and wait until internet service is restored.
- Start the server and wait until its console or control panel reports that startup has completed.
- Launch Steam and the game. Enter the server’s current address and password rather than using an old saved entry.
For a one-time permission test, launch the game or server with Run as administrator. If that changes the result, fix the underlying folder permissions or security rule instead of routinely running everything elevated. A wired connection is also worth testing when Wi‑Fi drops packets or isolates wireless clients from the LAN.

6. Confirm that the server is online and registered
Networking can be correct while the server itself is not available to Steam. Community troubleshooting reports identify these server-side conditions:
- The server process never completed startup or crashed before registering.
- The server is private or intentionally offline.
- The server is not registered with Steam.
- A required Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is missing, invalid, or assigned to the wrong server.
- The address, port, or password being entered does not match the running instance.
Check the server console or panel
- Start the server without closing its console or management panel.
- Look for a completed startup state and any registration, Steam, authentication, or token errors.
- Verify the public address seen by outside players and the local address used by players on the same network. Do not give outside players a private address such as
192.168.x.xunless they are on the same LAN. - Re-enter the password exactly, including capitalization and spaces.
If the server fails registration, fix that error before changing the client. A port-forwarding rule cannot make an instance register when the process is stopped or its token is rejected.
7. Inspect serverconfig.xml
The dedicated-server installation normally contains serverconfig.xml next to serveradmin.xml. Exact paths can vary by installation method, so search the server folder if you cannot find it. Back up the file before editing and stop the server first.
| Setting | What to verify |
|---|---|
ServerName |
The name shown to players is the intended instance, not an old or duplicate server. |
ServerPort |
Matches the port used in the router rule and connection details; the documented default is 26900. |
GameWorld |
Names the world the server should load. A typo can stop normal startup even when networking is open. |
ServerMaxPlayerCount |
Leaves a slot available for the joining player. |
| Password | Matches what the joining player enters; remove stale saved credentials when testing. |
EACEnabled |
Normally remains true; change only for the controlled workaround described below. |
Change one setting at a time, save the file, restart the server, and read the startup output for validation errors. A malformed XML edit can prevent the server from starting, so restore the backup if startup fails immediately after a change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Easy Anti-Cheat: last-resort compatibility test
EACEnabled defaults to true. Community guides state that DLL-based mods may require it to be false, while crossplay should keep it enabled. A Steam forum user also reported resolving this specific error by disabling EAC, but that is an individual workaround rather than a general fix.

When a temporary test is reasonable
- The client and server builds already match.
- Firewall, forwarding, antivirus, and registration checks have been completed.
- You are testing a private, non-crossplay server where all participants understand that anti-cheat protection is disabled.
Stop the server, change EACEnabled to false in the server configuration, restart it, and test once. If the error remains, restore true; EAC was not the cause. If the connection works only with EAC off, remove or update the incompatible mod and return to EAC-enabled operation whenever possible. Do not use this workaround for a public or crossplay server.
Diagnose the result of each test
It works on the same LAN but not over the internet
Focus on router forwarding, a changing LAN address, double NAT, and the host firewall. Ask an outside player to test only after the server is visibly running.

Only one computer receives the error
Compare that computer’s game branch and update status with a working player. Then check its local firewall, antivirus, and saved server entry.
The error began after an update or mod change
Return both sides to the same current build, disable the newly added mod for one test, and keep EAC enabled unless the server is explicitly a private compatibility test.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forwarding ports to a DHCP address that later belongs to another computer.
- Opening only TCP 26900 and forgetting the UDP 26900–26903 range.
- Allowing the player executable but not the dedicated-server executable through Windows Firewall.
- Testing with an old server bookmark, stale IP address, or outdated password.
- Leaving antivirus or EAC disabled after a diagnostic test.
- Editing
serverconfig.xmlwhile the server is running, then assuming the change was loaded. - Assuming a server is online because its console window exists; verify that startup and Steam registration completed.
When to escalate
If matching builds, firewall rules, documented ports, antivirus exclusions, restarts, and registration checks do not resolve the error, collect the server startup log, the exact build shown on both sides, the configured server port, and whether the failure occurs on LAN, internet, or both. Those details let the server host or the game’s developer forum distinguish a local configuration problem from a service-side registration failure. Avoid posting passwords, public tokens, or private IP details in a support request.
