To repair a corrupted tribe in ARK: Survival Ascended, stop the game or server, copy the entire save directory, replace the damaged .arktribe with a matching .tribebak (or restore the equivalent local backup), and restore a map backup from the same period. A tribe-file replacement without a consistent map rollback can leave players, structures, and tames out of sync. If the restored character is no longer in the tribe, use the administrative tribe and ownership commands only after preserving the original files.
Stop first and preserve every save file
Do not edit a live save. A running dedicated server can write a new tribe or map state while you are renaming files, and a local game can overwrite the evidence when it exits or loads the map.

- Copy the whole save location to a separate folder or drive. For a hosted server, copy all files available through FTP, not just the file that appears damaged. For a local game, copy the entire
ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArksLocal/<MapName>_WPfolder. - Give the copy a date and a clear label such as
ASA-before-tribe-repair-2026-10-18. Keep it outside the live save directory so the server cannot modify it. - Write down the current map, tribe, player and backup filenames, their timestamps, and the last known good gameplay state. This record lets you return to the original state if a rollback is worse.
Never delete the only .arktribe, .tribebak, map, or profile file. Work on copies and move suspect files aside rather than destroying them. If several people administer the server, tell them that recovery is in progress so nobody restarts it or performs a second restore during testing.
Identify the files ARK uses
ASA separates tribe, player and world data. The extensions tell you what a file can restore; they are not interchangeable.

Use file size and time as clues, not proof
Nitrado’s ASA recovery guidance identifies an .arktribe that is smaller than its corresponding .tribebak as a likely corruption sign. That comparison alone does not prove which file is valid. Check timestamps against your last known good session and consider whether the larger backup predates or follows the gameplay you need. A file can be larger because the tribe changed, not because it is healthy.
Look for a meaningful sequence rather than relying only on the operating system’s sort order. Compare the modified time of the active tribe file, its backup, the map file and player profiles. If the map was saved after a major build but the tribe backup predates it, restoring only the older tribe may make the build appear unowned. Conversely, a newer tribe file paired with an older map can reference players or structures that do not exist in that map state.

A tribe file is only one part of a save. The map and player profiles contain references to tribe IDs, structures and tames. Restoring a very old tribe backup while retaining a newer map can produce missing membership or ownership. Select a map backup from the same period as the tribe backup whenever possible. The safest candidate is the newest complete set that matches a session you can identify, not simply the largest file or newest timestamp.
Dedicated-server recovery
The following procedure applies to a server where you can stop the instance, access its files (normally through FTP), and use the host’s backup controls. If your provider does not expose FTP or snapshots, ask support to make a full copy before they attempt a restore.
1. Locate the live world folder
After stopping the server and making the full copy, open:
/arksa/ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArks/WORLDNAME
Replace WORLDNAME with the exact world directory used by your server. Locate the tribe’s .arktribe and its matching .tribebak. Do not rename a backup from a different tribe or world. If filenames contain an identifier, copy that identifier exactly; changing it can create a new, unrelated file instead of replacing the damaged one.

2. Replace the tribe file on a copy
- Move the suspected
.arktribeout of the live folder into your dated evidence folder. Moving it preserves the original and prevents the server from reading it. - Copy the selected
.tribebakinto the live world folder. - Rename that copied file to the exact original
.arktribefilename, including capitalization and the tribe identifier.
Do not rename the only backup in place. The replacement should be a duplicate so you can test another backup without losing the first candidate. Preserve the original extension while copying; a file accidentally saved as .arktribe.txt will not be read as a tribe save.

3. Restore a matching map backup
Use the host’s Restore Backup control to choose the newest map save that is consistent with the tribe backup’s date and known gameplay state. A map rollback changes more than the tribe: it can replace newer world, player and tribe data. Record the selected backup date before confirming the restore. If the host presents several snapshots, note which one contains the structures and tames you expect before applying it.
Do not restore a map snapshot first and then allow the server to run normally while deciding what to do with the tribe file. That creates a new save point and makes comparisons harder. Complete the file copy, map selection and test plan while the server remains stopped.
4. Start and test methodically
- Start the server and join with the affected survivor.
- Confirm that the survivor appears in the expected tribe and that tribe roles are present.
- Check several representative structures, storage containers and tames, including items built or tamed shortly before the suspected corruption.
- Verify other players’ profiles and the surrounding map for signs that the world rolled back as expected.
- Record what loaded, what disappeared and the exact backup combination used before making any additional change.
If the server still crashes, the tribe remains absent, or the map and tribe are visibly out of sync, stop the server again. Restore an older map backup that matches an older copy of the tribe file, then repeat the test. Keep each trial in your log rather than repeatedly overwriting one save. A failed test is useful only if you can return to the previous state and know which files produced it.
Single-player and local-host recovery
For a local save, exit ASA and open the map directory under:
ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArksLocal/<MapName>_WP
The exact parent directory depends on your installation and platform, but the map folder and its files are the important part. Make a separate copy of the entire folder before changing anything. Keep that untouched copy somewhere the game cannot see it, because relaunching into the same folder can update timestamps or create another automatic save.
Restore a tribe backup
- In the copied working folder, move the active
.arktribeaside. - Copy the selected
.tribebakso the original backup remains untouched. - Rename the copy to the exact active
.arktribefilename. - Launch ASA and load the same map. Check membership, tribe roles, structures and tames.
Restore a player or world backup when those are also damaged
If the survivor profile is corrupt, move the active .arkprofile aside, copy the appropriate .profilebak, and rename the copy to the active profile filename. If the world itself is corrupt, use the same copy-and-rename method with the selected world .bak. Some local folders also contain AntiCorruptionBackup.bak; preserve it and test it as an additional rollback option rather than assuming it is current.
Each replacement can remove progress made after that backup. Test one data type at a time when possible, and keep the untouched folder so you can undo a failed combination. If replacing the tribe alone restores membership, do not replace the player or map files unnecessarily; every extra rollback expands the amount of progress at risk.

Repair membership, tribe roles and ownership after the restore
A valid tribe file may load while your character is still outside the tribe. This usually means the player profile and tribe state came from different points in time, not that the structures vanished. On a server where you have administrator authority, the official community command reference documents these administrative commands:

These are cheat or administrative commands. Enable and use them only on a server where you are authorized, and keep the pre-repair save first. Targeting matters: some commands operate on the structure or player under your crosshair. Use the command reference for the exact target and argument requirements supported by your server version. Test a single structure or player before transferring an entire base or collection of dinosaurs.
Commands repair access; they do not reconstruct deleted world data. If a rollback removed a structure or tame, ownership commands cannot bring that object back. Conversely, running TakeTribe or broad ownership commands when the tribe is healthy can create a new ownership change that is harder to untangle than the original mismatch.
Be careful when joining or merging tribes
Tribe joins and merges change ownership. If your survivor is in a one-person tribe and must join another tribe, merge the tribes as required rather than simply joining and assuming every structure and tame will follow. Confirm ownership of important buildings and dinosaurs before allowing additional players to make changes. Have the original tribe members log in and verify roles before normal gameplay resumes.
Choose the least destructive recovery option

Prefer the newest backup that is both healthy and internally consistent, not simply the newest filename. A newer tribe file paired with an older map can be worse than restoring both from an earlier, matching point. If you lack FTP access, reliable snapshots or administrator permissions, a managed ASA host can be useful because its support and restore controls provide the access this procedure requires. Check the host’s current backup and retention terms rather than assuming every plan includes the same snapshots.
What to do when no backup works
No .tribebak exists
Nitrado’s recovery guidance, published December 22, 2023, states that, without a .tribebak, deleting the damaged .arktribe is the remaining file-level option; that leaves players outside the tribe. Do not interpret this as permission to delete your only copy. Preserve the original, remove only a working duplicate from the live save, and be prepared to restore access with administrative commands afterward. If the world loads, document the tribe identifier and ownership state before attempting broad commands.
The server still crashes or refuses to load
- Stop the server and restore the pre-repair directory you copied before the first attempt.
- Try an older complete map backup, with the corresponding tribe and profile files from the same period.
- Stop experimenting if every available combination fails. Repeated overwrites can destroy the only recoverable state.
- Contact the hosting provider with the world name, affected tribe identifier, timestamps, backup dates tried, and a copy of the untouched save. If the issue persists, submit an official ARK support request.
Provide copies, not your sole live directory. Support staff can only compare states that still exist. Ask the host whether they retain snapshots that are not visible in the normal control panel before accepting a permanent reset.

Patch history and what it means for current saves
The ARK Official Community Wiki records that ASA patch 26.8 retroactively fixed a save-game crash involving corrupted tribe data. Updating the game can therefore remove a known crash condition, but it cannot reconstruct a tribe file that has already been overwritten or deleted. Make sure the server and client use a compatible current version before testing a restored save.
The same documentation describes automatic player and tribe backup-and-restore behavior in earlier ARK systems. Those historical systems are not a guarantee that every current ASA server, host configuration or local installation has a usable backup. Verify the files you actually have before relying on an automatic-recovery assumption.

- Schedule or manually make full save-folder copies, including map, tribe and player files; a tribe-only copy cannot restore a consistent world.
- Keep several dated generations outside the live save directory so a newly corrupted backup does not replace every older copy.
- Before updating, changing mods, or moving a server, stop it cleanly and capture a complete save.
- Record the map, server settings, tribe identifier and backup date with each copy.
- Periodically verify that backups can be opened or downloaded and that both
.arktribeand.tribebakfiles are present where expected. - For hosted servers, confirm where the provider’s Restore Backup control stores snapshots and how to obtain FTP access before an emergency.
- Keep at least one copy on a separate drive or storage service; a backup stored inside the live save directory can be damaged by the same failure.
The safest repair is the one that preserves the original evidence, restores tribe and map state from the same time, and uses administrative commands only to correct the remaining membership or ownership mismatch.

Can I recover without a tribe backup?
If no .tribebak exists, the provider procedure describes removing the damaged tribe file and rebuilding access with administrator commands. Keep the damaged file in your evidence copy, because deleting it permanently from the only save removes your best chance of later comparison.
