To check and repair protected Windows system files, run DISM first and then sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt. SFC can replace certain corrupted protected files from a cached copy; it is not a general fix for every Windows problem.
What SFC can repair—and what it cannot
System File Checker (SFC) scans Windows protected system files and attempts to replace corrupted files with a cached copy. Microsoft’s documented procedure covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. It does not establish that SFC can fix unrelated causes such as failing hardware or every Windows Update problem. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.
Run DISM, then SFC
Use an elevated Command Prompt—a Command Prompt opened with administrator privileges. Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before scanning protected files with SFC. Save your work first, and let each command finish before starting the next.

At the prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to complete. By default, DISM uses Windows Update to obtain files needed for repair.
-
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannowKeep the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100%. Closing it early can interrupt the scan.

Understand the SFC result
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
SFC found no missing or corrupted protected system files. That does not rule out other causes for the problem you are troubleshooting.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
SFC reports that it repaired the detected protected files. If the original issue continues, investigate causes beyond the files SFC checks.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”
Inspect the SFC details log to identify the files involved. Use the current scan’s timestamps to distinguish its entries from those of earlier scans, then follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance. Do not download replacement DLLs from arbitrary websites.
“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”
Microsoft advises trying the SFC scan in Safe Mode and checking that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%WinSxSTemp.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt on your desktop and compare the date and time on its entries with the latest scan. The extracted file can include records from multiple SFC runs, so an entry in the file is not necessarily from the scan you just completed. Microsoft describes the log and extraction command in its SFC repair instructions.
If DISM cannot get repair files from Windows Update
If the Windows Update client is unavailable or broken, Microsoft documents using another suitable Windows repair source, such as a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network storage or removable media. The source must be suitable for the Windows image being repaired; the example path below is not a universal location.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual repair-source path. The /Source option specifies where DISM can find repair files, while /LimitAccess prevents it from using Windows Update. This is a conditional alternative, not a requirement for an ordinary SFC scan. See Microsoft’s repair-source instructions.
