Most non-Steam problems on Steam Deck can be isolated by checking the Deck itself, the game’s Steam Input layout, the selected audio output, and the game’s graphics or compatibility settings in that order. Start by installing every available SteamOS update, restarting the Deck, closing third-party applications added in Desktop Mode, and retesting. Then use the targeted controller, audio, performance, and docked-mode checks below; non-Steam launchers and individual games can limit what Steam’s configuration tools are able to change.
Start with a clean baseline
Before changing a layout, Proton tool, or audio codec, install pending SteamOS and client updates and restart the Deck. If the non-Steam application is still unstable, close or disable third-party software installed through Desktop Mode and test again. This separates a Deck-wide problem from an interaction with a launcher, overlay, or background utility. If the failure remains, the application’s own support channel may know about a title-specific launcher, anti-cheat, or compatibility issue that Steam’s general troubleshooting cannot resolve.
- In Gaming Mode, open the Steam menu and install any offered system or client updates.
- Choose Restart, then launch only the affected non-Steam game.
- If the behavior is unchanged, switch to Desktop Mode and temporarily close or disable nonessential applications you installed there.
- Return to Gaming Mode and retest before changing several settings at once. Record what changed so you can undo an unsuccessful adjustment.
Fix controller problems
1. Test the Deck’s physical controls
First determine whether the buttons, triggers, sticks, or trackpads work outside the game. Open Steam > Settings > Controller and run Test Controller Inputs. Press every button and move each stick through its full range. A failed test points to an input or hardware problem rather than a game layout problem; cleanly restart, remove accessories that could interfere, and contact Steam Support if an input continues to fail in the test.
If every input registers correctly, the hardware is probably not the immediate cause. Continue with the game’s layout and launch path.

2. Inspect the non-Steam game’s active layout
From the game’s library page, open its controller or gamepad settings and look at the currently selected layout. Steam Input can map Deck controls to a gamepad, keyboard, mouse, or combinations of those. Browse available community layouts and edit the active one when a title expects keyboard and mouse commands instead of a native controller.
A Playable compatibility classification does not mean every control is automatic. It can indicate that manual controller configuration, an on-screen keyboard, or touchscreen interaction is required. Check the game’s first-run menus as well: some titles ignore input until a profile, window, or launcher has focus.
3. Add and launch the game through Steam
Use Steam’s desktop-library option to add a non-Steam application, then launch it from the Steam library whenever possible. This gives Steam a chance to apply per-game controller configuration and the Steam Overlay. The result still depends on the executable and any separate launcher: a launcher may take focus, replace the game window, or not expose controls to Steam Input.

- Select the game executable or its launcher and add it to the library.
- Return to Gaming Mode, open the title’s controller settings, select or edit a layout, and launch from that library entry.
If the game uses a separate launcher, test both the launcher screen and the game itself. A layout that works in one may not be applied after the launcher starts the game.

4. Check the Steam Overlay and input style
Steam’s controller configuration relies on the Overlay, but Steam notes that the Overlay may not apply correctly to some non-Steam or retail games, especially when another launcher is involved. Enable the Overlay for the title if its settings provide that option, then test again. If it still does not appear, do not assume the Deck or controller is defective; the launcher may block or replace the overlay.
Also verify that the selected input style matches what the game accepts. A game expecting a keyboard will not respond to a layout that sends only gamepad buttons, and a gamepad-only title may ignore mouse-style bindings. Build a small test layout with one obvious action, such as moving the left stick or pressing A, before mapping every command.
5. Troubleshoot an external controller
For a Bluetooth controller, confirm that it is paired in the Deck’s Bluetooth settings and check the controller manufacturer’s firmware guidance. If it connects but inputs drop out, disconnect it, forget the device, and pair it again. Test the controller in Steam > Settings > Controller before blaming the game layout.
Docked setups can make wireless problems more likely. Keep the controller in clear line of sight of the Deck or dock, move it away from crowded 2.4 GHz equipment, and separate it from USB 3 devices or hubs that may add radio interference. A wired controller is a useful diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed permanent fix.

Restore sound from a non-Steam game
1. Select the intended output in Steam
Open Steam > Settings > Audio and confirm the output device you actually want to use. The Deck can see built-in speakers, a 3.5 mm headset, Bluetooth audio, USB-C audio, and a television or monitor connected through a dock as different devices. A game can be producing sound normally while Steam sends it to a device you are not listening to.
2. Isolate competing devices when the speakers are silent
If the built-in speakers produce no sound, disconnect Bluetooth headsets, USB-C audio devices, and anything in the 3.5 mm jack. TVs and some monitors count as audio devices even when you are not actively using their speakers. In Steam’s audio settings, switch to another output and back to the default speakers, and make sure interface sounds are enabled. Restart the Deck if the output remains silent after those changes.
Test a system interface sound before launching the game again. If interface sounds work but the game is silent, inspect the game’s own volume, mute, and output controls; some titles keep a separate mixer or select a display output at launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Repair Bluetooth latency or connection problems
A Bluetooth device that connects but crackles, lags, or performs poorly may need a fresh connection. Disconnect and reconnect it first. If that does not help, forget the device and pair it again. In Desktop Mode, open the sound settings and try another available A2DP codec, such as SBC or AptXLL, when the device and Deck offer that choice. Codec changes are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed latency or quality improvements; keep the codec that is stable for your hardware.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Configure docked HDMI or DisplayPort audio
When the Deck is docked and connected over HDMI or DisplayPort, open the Desktop Mode sound settings while the display is connected and choose the required channel count for multichannel audio. The television, monitor, receiver, dock, and cable must all support the selected arrangement. If stereo works but surround channels do not, temporarily select a lower channel count to identify whether the limitation is in the display chain rather than the game.
5. Know the LCD and OLED microphone difference
Steam documents different microphone behavior for the two Deck generations. On the LCD model, the built-in microphone is unavailable while a 3.5 mm audio plug is in use. On the OLED model, the built-in microphone can be used at the same time as 3.5 mm audio. This matters for voice chat and recording: a silent microphone on an LCD Deck with a wired headset may be expected hardware behavior, not a non-Steam game defect.
Improve performance and graphics
1. Establish whether the problem is load, compatibility, or display-related
After the baseline update, restart, and background-application check, observe the symptom. Consistently low frame pacing, stutter when effects appear, and excessive heat point toward graphics load. A game that opens but shows a launcher error may instead have a compatibility or anti-cheat limitation. A problem that appears only on an external monitor can involve resolution, refresh rate, cable, dock, or display support rather than the handheld rendering path.
2. Reduce the game’s graphics load methodically
Open the game’s video or graphics menu and lower the preset first. If that is not enough, adjust demanding options individually so you can see which setting matters:

- Lower output resolution or render scale when the game offers it.
- Reduce shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and view distance before sacrificing texture quality if memory allows.
- Disable expensive post-processing such as motion blur or high-quality depth-of-field when those options are available.
- Use the game’s frame-rate or refresh-rate controls consistently with the Deck display or external monitor.
There is no universal “Deck setting” that delivers a particular frame rate for every non-Steam game. Different engines, launchers, updates, and external displays change the result, so judge each title after a repeatable scene or save point rather than one menu screen.
3. Treat Proton selection as a Steam-library procedure
Steam’s documented Proton instructions apply to titles in the Steam library. For a Steam library game, open the title’s Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and test the latest Proton version offered there. Change one Proton version at a time and keep the version that starts and renders correctly.
Do not present that menu as a universal fix for every non-Steam launcher. A non-Steam shortcut may not expose the same compatibility controls, and a launcher can require its own runtime or prefix. If a title uses a separate launcher, consult that application’s support information before replacing compatibility files or prefixes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Some non-Steam games depend on launchers, anti-cheat components, codecs, or online services that are not interchangeable. If the game reaches a launcher but fails when the actual executable starts, capture the exact error, launcher version, Deck model, and compatibility path. The application’s support team can confirm whether that title supports Linux, a particular compatibility layer, or handheld controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the Deck is docked
Docking adds variables that do not exist in handheld mode. Reproduce the problem once with the Deck undocked, then reconnect the dock and change only one element at a time.
| Symptom | Docked checks | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No image or unstable image | Try another HDMI or DisplayPort input and, where appropriate, another cable. Confirm the display accepts the selected resolution and refresh rate. | If the alternate cable or input works, the original display path is the likely limitation. |
| Performance drops only on the monitor or TV | Lower the external resolution or refresh target and adjust the game’s graphics settings for that display. | The external mode may require more rendering work than the Deck’s built-in screen. |
| No sound through the display | Select the HDMI/DisplayPort output in Steam audio settings and verify the display volume and mute state. | The game may be sending audio to the handheld or another connected device. |
| Bluetooth controller disconnects | Improve line of sight, move the controller away from USB 3 hubs and crowded 2.4 GHz equipment, and compare with a wired controller. | Interference or placement is more likely than a game layout error when wired input is stable. |
| Surround channels missing | While connected in Desktop Mode, choose the required channel count in sound settings and verify receiver/display support. | A stereo-only component in the chain can limit the available channels. |
A decision path that avoids random changes
- Does the Deck fail its own input test? Investigate hardware or the physical connection before editing layouts.
- Does input work in the test but not in the game? Inspect the per-game layout, input style, launcher focus, and Overlay behavior.
- Is interface audio missing too? Select the output, remove competing devices, and restart. If only the game is silent, inspect its mixer.
- Does the issue occur only with Bluetooth? Re-pair, check firmware, reduce interference, and compare wired input or audio.
- Does the problem occur only when docked? Test the display, cable, channel configuration, and external graphics settings separately.
- Does lowering graphics settings help? Keep the lower-cost settings and then raise options individually until the trade-off is acceptable.
- Does the launcher still fail after these checks? Record the exact error and contact the application’s support team; non-Steam compatibility is title-specific.
What to record before asking for support
Useful details prevent a generic reset cycle. Note whether the Deck is LCD or OLED, handheld or docked, the SteamOS/client version, the game and launcher versions, the selected controller layout, output device, display resolution and refresh rate, and whether the built-in input test passes. Include the exact step at which the failure occurs and whether a clean restart or another cable, controller, or audio output changes it. That information lets Steam or the application developer distinguish hardware, configuration, display-chain, and compatibility issues without assuming that every non-Steam title behaves the same way.
