When Satisfactory shows Connection TIMED OUT or UNetConnection::Tick: Connection TIMED OUT, the most effective fix for a dedicated server is usually on the server: increase its initial-connect and connection timeout values, then restart it. Players should also set Network Quality to Ultra, join from Server Manager, allow the save to finish loading, and confirm that the client and server are on the same build.

This guide separates administrator fixes from player fixes, explains what the relevant log messages mean, and gives a decision path for cases involving ports, version mismatches, cold starts, or restricted networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the fix that matches your role

Do not begin by reinstalling the game. A timeout means the connection did not complete within the period allowed by the server or network; it does not, by itself, indicate damaged game files. Use this order:

Who can make the change First action Why it matters
Dedicated-server administrator Raise the initial-connect and connection timeout settings in Game.ini, then restart the server. Slow handshakes and large saves can exceed the default waiting period.
Player Set Options > Gameplay > Network Quality to Ultra. The setting allows more data to be exchanged while the connection is being established.
Player Add the server in Server Manager and connect from there. Dedicated servers are handled through that workflow rather than the ordinary Join Game route.
Either Wait for the world to finish loading and check that both sides use the same game build. A cold start or version mismatch can look exactly like a network timeout.

If you administer the server, perform the server-side change before asking every player to alter settings. If you are only a player, send the administrator the relevant log text and ask them to check the timeout, startup state, and ports.

Raise the dedicated server timeouts

A hosting-provider guide updated in June 2026 identifies longer timeout values as the most specific remedy for clients that cannot finish connecting to a Satisfactory dedicated server. The documented values are 180 seconds for the initial connection and 120 seconds for the connection timeout.

Find Game.ini

On a Linux dedicated server, the configuration directory is:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer

Open the Game.ini file in that directory. Managed hosts may expose the same file through a web editor or file manager instead of a normal shell. If your installation uses another operating system or a custom container layout, use the host’s file browser to locate the server’s Saved/Config directory; do not create a second configuration file in an arbitrary folder.

Add the two timeout entries

Go to the bottom of Game.ini and append the two timeout settings used by your host’s current Satisfactory instructions. Set the initial-connect timeout to 180 and the connection timeout to 120. Preserve the key names, section formatting, and equals-sign syntax already used in the file. The available evidence identifies the setting names by their function and these values, but host documentation can change the exact presentation, so copy the current labels from your provider rather than inventing new keys.

  • Make a backup copy of Game.ini before editing.
  • Put each setting on its own line at the end of the file.
  • Do not add quotation marks, units such as “seconds,” or inline comments unless the file already uses them.
  • Check that an automated control panel has not inserted a second copy of the same setting elsewhere.

Save and restart

  1. Save Game.ini.
  2. Stop the dedicated server completely. A configuration reload while the process remains active may not apply the new values.
  3. Start the server again and wait until it reports that the world is ready.
  4. Have one player test the connection before inviting everyone else.

This is provider documentation rather than an official Coffee Stain developer fix. It is nevertheless the clearest documented change when clients consistently time out during the handshake or while a large save is starting.

Set Network Quality to Ultra on the client

Each player can change the amount of networking data exchanged during connection setup:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Launch Satisfactory and open Options.
  2. Choose the Gameplay tab.
  3. Find Network Quality.
  4. Select Ultra and apply the change.
  5. Return to the main menu and try the dedicated server again.

Cybrancee’s troubleshooting guidance describes Ultra as increasing data exchanged with the server during connection. This setting is a client-side test; it cannot repair a stopped server, a blocked port, or an incompatible build. If Ultra makes no difference, leave it enabled while the administrator checks the server-side items below rather than repeatedly changing unrelated graphics options.

Join a dedicated server through Server Manager

For a dedicated server, use the server-management screen instead of the ordinary Join Game button.

  1. From the Satisfactory main menu, open Server Manager.
  2. Add the server using its address and query information supplied by the administrator.
  3. Save the entry and select it from Server Manager.
  4. Start the connection from that entry, not from a friends-only or Join Game listing.

LOW.MS documentation and a 2024 Steam discussion both describe this path as a workaround for dedicated-server connection failures. If the server does not appear or the entry cannot be saved, record the exact message and give it to the administrator; changing Network Quality will not correct an address or query-port error.

Wait for the world to finish loading

A newly started server can take one to three minutes to become joinable, and a large save can take longer. Connecting during that interval can produce the same timeout shown when a packet is blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell a cold start from a dead server

  • Watch the server console or control-panel status instead of relying only on the in-game spinner.
  • Check whether CPU, memory, or disk activity is still high while the save is being opened.
  • Ask another player who is already connected whether the world is visible and responsive.
  • After a crash or update, give the process time to shut down cleanly before starting it again; two server processes can compete for the same ports.

Do not cancel a connection attempt after only a few seconds when the administrator has just started the server. Once the server reports that the world is ready, try again. If it still times out after the configured waiting period, move to version and port checks.

Match the client and server versions

The player and dedicated server must run the same Satisfactory build. Steam and Epic installations can receive updates at different times, and a server left running after an update may still be using the previous build.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Close Satisfactory completely on the player computer.
  2. Allow Steam or Epic Games to finish any pending update.
  3. Ask the administrator to update the dedicated server through the same release channel.
  4. Restart the server after the update, even if the control panel says the files were downloaded successfully.
  5. Launch the game again and retry from Server Manager.

Do not infer compatibility from the fact that both installations are called “Satisfactory.” The relevant requirement is the actual build currently running on each side. If one player can join while another cannot, compare the affected player’s update status, platform, mods, and network rather than immediately changing the server configuration.

Check ports, firewalls, and restricted networks

LOW.MS lists 7777 for game traffic and 8888 for reliable messaging as default ports that may be blocked on restricted networks. The exact public address, protocol, and any custom port forwarding depend on the administrator’s setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server-side checks

  • Confirm that the server process is listening on the configured game and messaging ports.
  • Allow the Satisfactory server executable through the host operating system’s firewall.
  • If the server is behind a router, forward the configured ports to the machine running the server.
  • Make sure the hosting control panel’s firewall or security group allows the same ports.
  • Check that a previous server process is not holding the port after an unclean shutdown.

Player-side checks

  • Temporarily test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, if your local network is managed by a school, employer, hotel, or carrier-grade firewall.
  • If the hotspot works, the game and server are probably functional; ask the network administrator about outbound restrictions rather than changing save files.
  • If neither the normal connection nor the hotspot works, the server address, listening state, version, or timeout configuration remains more likely than a local Wi-Fi problem.

A hotspot test is diagnostic, not a permanent recommendation. It can incur mobile-data charges and may have higher latency. Return to the normal connection after identifying which network boundary blocks the traffic.

Use the server log to identify the failing stage

Ask the administrator to inspect the server log immediately after a failed attempt. Search for these phrases:

Connection TIMED OUT

This indicates that the connection did not complete before the timeout expired. Correlate the timestamp with server startup, an update, or a firewall change. A timeout during every attempt points toward server readiness, ports, versions, or timeout values; an isolated timeout can be transient network loss.

RegisterPlayerWithSession

This entry helps identify failures while the server is registering the player with the online session. If it appears repeatedly before the timeout, check that the server is fully online, the client is using the correct Server Manager entry, and the two builds match.

IsOnline: false and player-timeout reports

Community reports hosted by CubeCoders associate this text with player timeout cases. It is a clue, not a diagnosis: it can accompany a dropped session, a server that is still starting, or a blocked route. Record several lines before and after the message, along with the server start time and the affected player’s platform.

Provide the administrator with the complete timestamped excerpt rather than only a screenshot of the in-game error. The surrounding lines often show whether the failure happened while loading the save, registering the session, or losing an already established connection.

Try older community workarounds only after current fixes

Two older community discussions—one on a CubeCoders forum and one on a Satisfactory forum—report successful connections after disabling server options that pause when empty and save on disconnect. These reports predate current builds and are not verified for every present version.

If the timeout survives the current timeout, startup, version, and port checks, an administrator can test those options one at a time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the original values so they can be restored.
  2. Disable only the pause-when-empty option and restart the server.
  3. Test one player connection.
  4. If there is no change, restore it and test the save-on-disconnect option separately.
  5. Restore both settings if they do not help or introduce unwanted save behavior.

Do not treat this as a guaranteed fix. Pausing an empty server and saving on disconnect affect server behavior and data safety; changing them merely to bypass a timeout may create longer startup times or unexpected save timing.

What this error does not prove

  • It does not prove that the save is corrupted.
  • It does not prove that the player has been banned or removed from the server.
  • It does not prove that reinstalling Satisfactory will change the result.
  • It does not identify whether the server, player network, or version mismatch is responsible without log and timing information.

No published statistics establish how often this error occurs, and no official developer patch or statement confirming a universal fix was identified as of October 14, 2026. Treat claims that the issue is permanently fixed—or that one client setting works for every server—as unverified unless they are tied to a specific build and configuration.

Preventing repeat timeouts

After a successful connection, document the working setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the Satisfactory build and platform for both the server and players.
  • Keep a backup of the working Game.ini.
  • Note the public address and any non-default ports used by the server.
  • After every game or server update, restart the dedicated server before players connect.
  • Tell players whether they should use Server Manager and how long a cold start normally takes.
  • Keep a timestamped copy of the relevant log lines when a timeout recurs.

This information turns the next failure into a comparison against a known-good state instead of a series of unrelated reinstalls and setting changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix a dedicated-server timeout without administrator access?

You can perform the client checks—Network Quality, Server Manager, version updates, and a different-network test—but only the administrator can change Game.ini, restart the server, or open its ports. Send the administrator the timestamp and log wording from your failed attempt.

Should I reinstall Satisfactory when every connection attempt times out?

Reinstallation is not the first-line response. Verify the build, server readiness, timeout configuration, address, and ports first. Reinstall or verify files only when the launcher reports damaged or incomplete files, or when one computer fails while an otherwise identical client can connect.

Why can one player join while another gets a timeout?

That pattern points toward a player-specific difference such as a restricted network, stale game update, incorrect Server Manager entry, or firewall rule. Compare the affected player’s build and address, then run one hotspot test before changing server settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a longer timeout repair a blocked port?

No. Increasing the waiting period helps a slow handshake or save load, but packets that cannot reach the server will continue to fail. Port, firewall, address, and network tests are still required when the server never sees the connection attempt.
