Record the symptom before changing settings
A generic message such as “connection issue” is not enough to diagnose Marathon. Bungie’s disconnected-error guidance says each error code represents a different type of disconnection and helps Bungie, platform partners, and players track what is causing the loss of connectivity. Write down the complete code exactly as displayed, including capitalization, numbers, and punctuation.
- Where it happens: login, queue, matchmaking search, loading screen, or during a match.

Do the low-risk reset first
Before changing ports, UPnP, or other advanced settings, perform the reset recommended in Marathon Help. Retry the activity once. If it fails again, fully exit Marathon rather than leaving it suspended, restart the platform, and launch the game again.

Separate matchmaking problems from a service outage
A queue that never completes, an immediate return to the menu, and a mid-match disconnect are not interchangeable symptoms. Use timing and repeatability to classify them:
- Login failure: authentication or a broad service problem is more plausible than a single match’s rules.
- Queue or matchmaking failure: retry and, for OREGANO, adjust matchmaking criteria as Marathon Help recommends.
- Loading-screen disconnect: compare Wi‑Fi and Ethernet and note whether the same code appears every time.
- Mid-match disconnect: record the exact code and whether other players were removed at the same time. A server-closed match cannot be rejoined.
- Failures across several activities with varied codes: do not force every event into one router diagnosis. Bungie says several codes can indicate a cause that cannot be isolated to one code.
Bungie explains that connection recovery can fail because of a problem with Bungie’s servers or network infrastructure; in that situation, connection recovery may not be possible. During a service incident, restarting a router repeatedly will not repair the affected infrastructure. Check official Marathon Help or status communications before making a series of local changes. If the same account works on another network while your home network fails, that comparison is evidence for a path-specific problem, not proof that the game service is healthy for everyone.
Scope is another useful clue. If only one PC disconnects while another device on the same network remains stable, investigate that installation and its software environment first. If every device fails at the same time, a home-network or provider issue becomes more plausible. What a clean-overlay result means
