Most Composer installation failures on Linux are not caused by Composer itself. They come from the PHP CLI binary, missing PHP extensions, unavailable archive or version-control tools, broken certificate configuration, insufficient memory, or a shell path that does not contain the Composer executable. Verify those foundations first, then match the exact error to the appropriate repair.
This guide covers a clean installation, checksum verification, global and project-local use, and recovery for the common errors reported by Composer on Ubuntu, Debian, and other Linux distributions.

Composer is a PHP command-line dependency manager. It runs with the PHP interpreter invoked by your shell, so the PHP used at the terminal—not necessarily the PHP used by a web server—determines whether Composer can run and which extensions it detects.
Check the PHP binary and version
command -v php
php -v
php -mcommand -v php shows the executable selected through PATH. Confirm that it is the binary you intend to use. The current Composer line requires PHP 7.2.5 or newer. Composer 2.2 LTS supports PHP 5.3.2 and newer for legacy systems, but it is an older maintenance line and may not satisfy newer packages.

If several PHP versions are installed, the command-line binary can differ from the one configured for Apache or PHP-FPM. Install extensions for the CLI version shown by php -v, then rerun php -m. A web server showing one PHP version does not prove that the shell is using the same version.
Check transport, archive and VCS utilities
Composer can download source archives or obtain packages from version-control repositories. Depending on the package, the host may need tools such as 7z or 7zz, gzip, tar, unrar, unzip, and xz. Packages hosted in source repositories may also require Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion, or Fossil. Install the utility named in the error through your distribution’s package manager rather than assuming every package uses the same download method.
Install Composer safely
Use the official installer, save it to a file, verify its SHA-384 signature, and only then execute it. Piping an unverified download directly into PHP removes the opportunity to inspect or reject a changed file.
1. Download and verify the installer
The Composer project publishes the expected signature at https://composer.github.io/installer.sig and the installer at https://getcomposer.org/installer. This example downloads both values and deletes the installer if the signatures differ:

php composer.phar --version3. Make Composer global, if appropriate
For a system-wide command, place the PHAR in a directory on PATH, such as /usr/local/bin. Writing there normally requires administrator privileges:

composer --versionIf you do not administer the machine, keep the PHAR in your project and invoke it as php composer.phar, or install it in a user-owned bin directory already listed in your PATH. Do not use a root shell merely to hide a permissions problem.
4. Run the built-in checks immediately
composer diagnose
curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | php -- --checkThe installer’s --check mode tests installer prerequisites. Composer’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends running composer diagnose before asking for help because it checks common configuration problems. Add -vvv when you need certificate paths, proxy details, or the exact operation that failed:
composer diagnose -vvvChoose a local PHAR or a distribution package

Whichever route you choose, verify the command that actually runs with command -v composer and composer --version. A successful package installation does not help if an older executable earlier in PATH is being invoked.
Fix “command not found” and “Could not open input file”
These messages usually indicate a path or filename problem, not a dependency problem.
- Check your current directory and the PHAR filename:
pwdandls -l composer.phar. - Check whether a global command is visible:
command -v composerandecho "$PATH". - If the PHAR is local, run it explicitly:
php composer.phar diagnose. - If you moved it globally, confirm the destination exists and is executable:
ls -l /usr/local/bin/composer. - Open a new shell or refresh the shell’s command cache if your shell still resolves an old location.
Use the exact file name shown by ls. Running php composer.phar from a different directory produces “Could not open input file” even when the download itself was successful.

Fix PHP version and missing-extension errors
Composer represents the running PHP interpreter, ext-* extensions, lib-* libraries, and Composer API capabilities as platform packages. Dependency constraints are evaluated against those detected platform packages.

composer diagnoseCompare the reported PHP version and extensions with the package’s requirements. Install the matching CLI extension using your distribution’s package manager, enable it in the CLI php.ini, and then rerun php -m. If an extension appears in a web-server configuration but not in php -m, it is not enabled for the CLI process Composer uses.

Do not solve a genuine platform mismatch by permanently ignoring it. --ignore-platform-req can be useful for a short diagnostic experiment, but it allows installation of code that the target runtime may be unable to execute. The proper repair is to use a compatible PHP version, install the required extension, or choose package versions that support the runtime.
Fix archive and version-control download failures
Read the utility name in the error. An archive such as ZIP or a compressed TAR may need a decompressor that is absent from a minimal server. A source install may require a VCS client.
- For archive errors, install and verify the named utility, such as
unzip,tar,gzip,xz,7z, orunrar. - For repository errors, install the client requested by the package, such as Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion, or Fossil.
- Rerun the failed Composer command with
-vvvto see whether Composer is attempting a distribution archive or a source checkout.
Installing every possible utility is unnecessary. Match the tool to the package source and the explicit error, then rerun the command.
Fix TLS, certificate and cURL errors
Messages such as “failed to enable crypto,” certificate verification failures, and cURL errors usually indicate a trust-store, clock, DNS, proxy, firewall, or outbound HTTPS problem. They do not prove that a package has disappeared.

- Run
composer diagnose -vvvand note the CA file and CA directory Composer or PHP reports. - Verify that the configured CA bundle exists, is readable, and contains current certificate authorities. Correct the PHP and cURL CA-bundle settings rather than disabling verification.
- Check the system clock. An incorrect date can make valid certificates appear expired or not yet valid.
- Test DNS resolution and outbound HTTPS from the same host and user account that runs Composer.
- Inspect
HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXY, and related environment variables. Remove stale values or configure the proxy’s required credentials and certificate chain. - Check firewall and egress rules, especially on servers restricted to approved destinations.
cURL error 28 means a request exceeded Composer’s timeout; Composer documentation references a 300-second minimum timeout. Treat it as a latency or connectivity issue first. A slow proxy, packet loss, DNS delay, or blocked endpoint can all produce the timeout.
Fix memory-limit and proc_open(): fork failed errors
Dependency resolution and child processes can consume substantially more memory than the initial Composer command suggests. A host with little free RAM or no swap may fail while Composer is forking a process.
- Inspect available memory and swap:
free -m
swapon --show- Use Composer 2 rather than an obsolete major version when the PHP runtime supports it.
- Close other memory-intensive processes and retry.
- If the host is permitted to use swap, enable an appropriately sized swap area according to your distribution’s administration policy.
- Raise PHP’s memory limit only when the machine has capacity. You can set it for one invocation with
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMITor adjust the CLImemory_limit:
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=-1 composer installAn unlimited value removes PHP’s limit but does not create physical memory. Child processes can have separate limits, and the operating system can still terminate the job when RAM and swap are exhausted. If failures continue after a reasonable limit increase, use a host with more memory or reduce concurrent workloads instead of repeatedly raising the limit.

When Composer cannot resolve a package, first distinguish a naming or repository problem from a real version conflict.
- Check the package name, vendor name, repository URL, branch, and tag spelling.
- Confirm that a newly published package or version is available in the configured repository and has reached the index you are using.
- Review
minimum-stabilityandprefer-stablesettings when development branches or pre-releases are involved. - Read the complete constraint message; another package may be holding a dependency at an incompatible version.
For a deliberate single-package change, update only that package and its required dependencies:
composer update vendor/package --with-dependenciesTo identify the constraint preventing a target version, use:

php composer.phar why-not vendor/package 2.0.0Replace the example package and version with the values in your error. Do not remove broad constraints from composer.json simply to force a solver result; that can create a set of packages your application has never tested.
Use install and update for their intended jobs

Commit composer.lock for applications and run composer install during deployment. Use composer update when you have reviewed the intended dependency changes. Running update as a routine repair can mask the original problem by changing many packages at once.

A partially interrupted download can leave the vendor directory inconsistent. For a deliberate troubleshooting rebuild, remove only the generated directory and resolve dependencies again:
rm -rf vendor
composer update -vThis changes the lock file if resolution selects different versions, so review and commit the resulting changes only when that is intentional. For normal deployment, preserve the existing lock file, remove a damaged vendor directory if necessary, and run composer install to restore the locked set.
Handle permissions and untrusted package scripts
Keep the project directory owned by the user or service account that runs Composer. A previous installation performed as root can leave files that the normal account cannot overwrite. Correct ownership and permissions instead of alternating between root and an unprivileged user.
Composer packages can contain plugins and scripts that execute during installation. When inspecting or installing code you do not yet trust, disable those hooks for the operation:

composer install --no-plugins --no-scriptsThese flags are a safety measure, not a substitute for reviewing dependencies. Some projects require scripts to generate autoloaders or complete setup, so rerun the normal command only after the package contents and source are trusted.

When a managed host is the practical choice
Manual repair is appropriate when you control the Linux system and can change PHP, CA certificates, firewall rules, memory, and packages. A managed PHP or VPS service can reduce maintenance when you cannot change those prerequisites yourself. That is an operational choice, not a Composer requirement: Composer still needs a compatible PHP CLI, network access, extensions, and filesystem permissions wherever it runs.
