Most WordPress MySQL errors fall into four groups: WordPress cannot connect, the database user lacks a privilege, a table is damaged, or a query expects a column that is missing. The safest fix is to record the exact message, make a verified database backup, then test configuration, hosting, permissions, and table health in that order. Do not repair or alter tables before you have a recoverable copy.
Start with the exact error, not a guess
Write down the complete message shown on screen and note its scope. Does the entire site fail, or only the dashboard, one post, or a plugin page? Record what changed immediately before the failure, such as a password rotation, migration, server move, plugin or theme update, or WordPress core upgrade. The wording usually identifies the correct branch of troubleshooting.

Save the error text before changing anything. A support engineer can act much faster with the exact SQL error, the affected URL, and the time the failure began.
Back up before touching MySQL
WordPress troubleshooting guidance advises maintaining a current backup, and database-repair guidance specifically says to back up before performing any action on tables. Export the database through your host’s backup system or phpMyAdmin and verify that the export completed and can be downloaded. If your host offers a snapshot, create one as well.

What a usable backup contains
- A complete SQL export of the affected WordPress database, not just a single table.
- The current
wp-config.phpfile, stored securely because it contains credentials. - A note of the database name, table prefix, hosting account, and the time of the export.
- A second copy outside the server account.
Do not use a repair command as a substitute for a backup. Repairs can remove unrecoverable rows from a damaged table, while a backup gives you a way to restore the pre-repair state.
Fix “Error Establishing a Database Connection”
This message means WordPress cannot connect to its database. The cause may be a wrong credential, an incorrect host name, a stopped MySQL or MariaDB service, an exhausted quota, a suspended account, or a wider server outage. Treat those as separate possibilities rather than repeatedly editing PHP files.
1. Check the live wp-config.php values
Open the wp-config.php file used by the running site. Confirm these four constants character for character:
DB_NAME— the database name.DB_USER— the database account WordPress uses.DB_PASSWORD— the current password for that account.DB_HOST— the host name or connection endpoint supplied by your provider.
Compare each value with the database panel, not with an old setup note. A password changed in the hosting panel must also be updated in the live configuration file. Check that you edited the production wp-config.php, rather than wp-config-sample.php or a staging copy. Preserve quotation marks and avoid adding spaces or invisible characters inside the values.
2. Confirm the database and user assignment
In the hosting control panel, verify that the named database still exists and that DB_USER is assigned to it. Some panels display a required account prefix, so a database shown as account_site must be entered exactly that way. If the database was renamed during a migration, update the configuration only after confirming the new name.

3. Ask the host to check service and account state
Contact the hosting provider when the configuration values match but the error remains. Ask specifically whether:

- The database or hosting account has reached its storage or connection quota.
- The account is suspended or restricted.
- The server is experiencing an outage or maintenance event.
- The supplied
DB_HOSTvalue is still correct for your account.
Quota exhaustion and service downtime cannot be repaired by changing WordPress code. Give support the exact error, the time it started, and confirmation that you have already checked the four configuration constants.
4. Consider a compromise only when the evidence points there
An unexpected password or host change can be a sign that an account was compromised. If credentials changed without an authorized administrator, preserve the error and access logs, rotate the database password through the host, update the live configuration, and ask the host to review account activity. Do not delete unfamiliar tables or files before preserving a backup and obtaining assistance.
Resolve “CREATE command denied” and other permission errors
A message such as CREATE command denied means the database user assigned to WordPress does not have the required privilege. PHP code cannot grant that privilege. The correction must be made in the database or hosting control panel.
Check the user-to-database assignment
- Open the database section of your hosting panel.
- Identify the database named in
DB_NAME. - Confirm that the account named in
DB_USERis assigned to that database. - Review the assigned privileges and enable the permissions required by the operation, including the ability to create or alter tables when a plugin or upgrade needs them.
- Save the change and retry the original operation once.
Panel labels vary. In one interface the control may be called “Manage Users,” while another may expose “Privileges” or “Assign User to Database.” If you cannot see privilege controls, ask the host to assign a properly privileged database user or create one for you.

Update credentials only if they changed
If the host creates a replacement user or changes its password, update DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD in the live wp-config.php. Keep DB_NAME and DB_HOST unchanged unless the host explicitly provides new values. Test both the front end and the dashboard, because a plugin may need a privilege that normal page loads do not exercise.
Repair Error 145 and corrupted tables
Error 145 indicates that a table is damaged or corrupted. A repair is appropriate only after you have a verified backup and have identified the affected database. If several tables fail, or if the server reports storage errors, involve the host before running repeated repairs.
Repair a table in phpMyAdmin
- Open phpMyAdmin from the hosting control panel.
- Select the database named by
DB_NAME. - Review the error to identify the table; select that table, or the affected tables only.
- Choose the table operation labeled Repair Table. On some versions this appears in the “With selected” menu.
- Wait for the result message and record whether the operation completed successfully.
- Test the page or process that originally failed.
Do not select an unrelated database, and do not drop a table because it appears corrupt. A WordPress table can contain posts, users, settings, orders, or plugin data that cannot be recreated automatically.
Repair with WP-CLI
On a shell account with WP-CLI and permission to run database commands, change to the WordPress installation directory and run:

When to stop and escalate
- The repair fails repeatedly or reports storage-engine errors.
- The database server is offline, read-only, or out of disk space.
- More tables become damaged after a repair.
- You are unsure which database belongs to the site.
- The site handles critical transactions and you cannot validate the backup.
Ask the host to run database checks and repairs when any of these conditions applies. Tell them which tables failed and provide the backup time.

An unknown-column message has two common explanations: the database schema was not fully upgraded, or a query refers to an identifier incorrectly. The timing of the failure determines which path to follow.
After a WordPress core or plugin upgrade
If the error appeared immediately after an upgrade, rerun the upgrade manually. An interrupted update can leave the application files at one version while the database still lacks a column expected by that version. Use the administrator’s update screen when it is available; if the dashboard is inaccessible, complete the upgrade through the supported command-line or hosting method for your installation, then revisit the failing page.
Do not add a column by guessing its name or data type. The expected schema belongs to the software version that issued the query, and an improvised column can create a different failure during the next update.
When a custom query is involved
If a custom plugin, theme, integration, or administrator-written SQL query produced the message, inspect the identifier spelling and quoting. Column names must match the table definition. A value intended as a string should not be written as an unquoted identifier, and a typo in an alias can make a valid column appear unknown. Correct the query or contact its developer after capturing the full SQL error.

Handle temporary-resource and cache errors separately
Some MySQL messages are symptoms of exhausted server resources rather than WordPress defects. Examples include a full /tmp directory, too many files in /tmp, or a full server cache. Repeatedly editing wp-config.php will not create disk space or raise a host limit.
Send the host the complete message and ask it to check temporary-directory usage, inode and file-count limits, disk space, cache capacity, and the database service logs. Wait for confirmation that the resource issue is cleared before retrying an import, update, or repair. If the host says the account is at its quota, remove only known-safe files or upgrade the account according to its documented process; never delete database files from the server filesystem manually.

Self-repair is reasonable when the message is unambiguous, the backup is verified, and you have the required privileges. Escalate when the evidence points to an outage, quota, account restriction, server resource problem, or uncertain data loss.
Prevent the same MySQL failures
- Keep a current, restorable database backup before core, plugin, theme, migration, or schema changes.
- Record the active database name, user, host, table prefix, and WordPress version in a secure maintenance note.
- Change database passwords through a planned process that updates the hosting panel and live
wp-config.phptogether. - Use a staging copy to test plugins and updates that alter database tables.
- Keep hosting quota and temporary-directory usage below their limits.
- Give WordPress only the database privileges required by the features you operate, but ensure update and installation tasks have the documented permissions they need.
- When an error first appears, preserve the full message and the time of occurrence before clearing caches or reinstalling software.
These checks separate a configuration mistake from a damaged table or a host outage, which prevents a risky repair from being applied to the wrong problem.
