For most Amazon Alexa tablet connection failures, start with Airplane mode, the Wi‑Fi name and password, and another device on the same network. Then restart the tablet and router, test a phone hotspot, install any available tablet software update, and use the built-in network reset. A tablet that says “connected” may still need a public hotspot’s sign-in page. Amazon’s current Alexa Tablet guidance does not establish a model-specific procedure for apps that crash or refuse to open, so do not assume that Fire Tablet cache or data instructions apply.
The safest approach is to identify the failure stage before changing settings. A setup login problem, a tablet that cannot associate with Wi‑Fi, a captive public hotspot, and a single crashing app can look similar but require different next steps. Work from the least disruptive checks to the settings reset, and record what each test shows.
Identify where the failure occurs
The correct fix depends on whether the problem happens during first-time setup, while joining Wi‑Fi, after the tablet reports a connection, or only when an app starts. Use this quick split before changing settings.

| Observed symptom | First checks | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The tablet cannot find or join your home network | Airplane mode, network name, password, another device on the same network, distance from the router | Separates a tablet setting or coverage problem from a wider home-network outage. |
| The tablet says it is connected, but websites or apps have no internet | Open a simple page in Silk, check for a public-network sign-in page, then test a phone hotspot | A captive portal or home-network problem is more likely than a failed Wi‑Fi radio. |
| Setup stops at account login | Use the appropriate Amazon or Google credentials and the official password-reset flow | Identifies an account or setup-stage problem rather than an app problem. |
| One or more apps crash or will not open after setup | Record the app, exact error, tablet model and software version; check instructions for that exact model | The available Alexa Tablet sources do not verify a particular cache, data-clearing or force-close sequence. |
| Several devices fail on the same Wi‑Fi | Restart the modem and router and contact your internet provider if the outage continues | The fault is likely outside the tablet. |
Record the symptom before troubleshooting
Write down whether the network appears in the Wi‑Fi list, whether the tablet accepts the password, and whether a browser can load a page. Note if the failure occurs only at home, only on a public hotspot, or on every network you try. For an app, record its name, the exact wording of any error, the action that triggers it, and whether other apps work. Also record the tablet’s precise model and installed software version. These details keep a general Fire Tablet help article from being mistaken for instructions for a different Alexa Tablet model.

Fix a tablet that will not connect to Wi‑Fi
1. Turn off Airplane mode
On the tablet, open Settings > Network & Internet and make sure Airplane mode is off. A device can appear to have normal settings while its wireless radios remain disabled by this mode. After switching it off, wait briefly for the available networks list to refresh before trying the connection again.
2. Re-enter the network details
Check the Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password character by character. Pay attention to similarly named networks and to capitalization or punctuation in the password. Then try the same network with another phone or computer. If another device also fails, troubleshoot the router or internet service before treating the tablet as defective. If other devices work, continue with the tablet-specific checks below.
A successful connection by another device does not prove that every band or location is working for the tablet, but it does show that the network is broadcasting and accepting at least one client. Keep the test device in roughly the same location when comparing results so distance is not the only difference.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Reduce distance and interference
Move the tablet closer to the router and retry. Amazon specifically calls out interference from appliances such as microwaves and baby monitors. Temporarily disconnect other Wi‑Fi devices if the network is heavily occupied, then test the tablet again. This is a diagnostic step, not a permanent requirement to keep every other device offline.
If moving the tablet changes the result, coverage or interference is part of the explanation. If the tablet fails at the router as well as across the room while other devices continue to work, continue with the software and network-setting checks rather than repeatedly repositioning it.
4. Add a hidden network manually
If your network does not broadcast its name, use the tablet’s option to add a network manually. Enter the exact network name and password, select Advanced, and confirm the hidden-network option. A spelling or security mismatch will prevent a hidden network from joining even when the password looks correct.
Use the network’s actual name rather than a nickname used by the router’s mobile app. If you are unsure whether the network is hidden, compare the tablet’s list with the network name shown in the router settings. Do not change router security settings just to make this test; first confirm the credentials and the hidden-network selection.

5. Restart the tablet
Restart the tablet normally and try the connection again. If the device is unresponsive or an error has interrupted setup, Amazon’s setup guidance says to hold the power button for 20 seconds to restart it. This is a restart, not a factory reset, so it does not intentionally erase the tablet.
After the restart, check the network list again rather than assuming the previous connection attempt is still active. If the tablet reconnects only after a restart, note that behavior in your support record; it can help distinguish a temporary software state from a persistent credential or coverage issue.
6. Check for available tablet software
Use the tablet’s software-update control and install the latest version offered for that device. Menu names and update availability can vary by model and operating-software release, so follow the labels shown on your tablet rather than applying a path from a different device.
If the tablet cannot reach the home network well enough to update, use a working connection such as a phone hotspot only if your data plan and hotspot terms allow it. The hotspot is also a diagnostic: successful access demonstrates that the tablet can use Wi‑Fi, but it does not identify which home-network setting is responsible.

7. Test a phone hotspot
Enable a personal hotspot on a smartphone and try connecting the tablet to it. If the tablet works on the hotspot, the test points toward the home network, its coverage, or its security configuration. It does not prove that a particular router component is faulty. If the tablet cannot connect to either network, keep the focus on the tablet’s settings, software and exact model documentation.
Interpret the result narrowly. A hotspot that works proves only that the tablet can connect to that particular network under those conditions. It does not prove that the home router is defective, that the tablet’s radio is perfect, or that every public hotspot will work. Conversely, failure to join a hotspot may reflect an incorrect hotspot password or phone setting, so verify the phone’s hotspot details before drawing conclusions.
8. Reset only the network settings
When the preceding checks fail, use Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi. This removes saved wireless and Bluetooth settings, so you will need to join the network again with its password. After the reset, restart the modem and router as Amazon recommends, wait for the network to return, and retry the tablet.
Because this reset removes saved connections, have the correct Wi‑Fi password available first. It is narrower than a factory reset, but it still affects every saved Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connection, not just the network currently failing. Reconnect the tablet deliberately and test a web page before concluding that the problem is solved.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use consistent settings with extenders or mesh nodes
If your home uses an extender or mesh system, Amazon advises using the same network name, security type and password across the primary network, extenders and mesh nodes. Inconsistent values can make a tablet roam unpredictably or reject a node even though another device appears online. Change the network equipment configuration only after recording the current values, then reconnect the tablet using the resulting single set of credentials.
When testing, stand near the primary router first and then near an extender or mesh node. If the tablet works in one location but not another, note which node it is using. That observation is more useful than repeatedly deleting and re-adding the same network, and it tells you whether the issue follows coverage or follows the tablet.
When the tablet says “connected” but has no internet
Check for a captive sign-in page
Hotels, libraries, airports and other public hotspots may require a welcome page, terms acceptance or account sign-in after the Wi‑Fi association succeeds. If the page does not appear automatically, open Silk and visit a simple, non-secure web page to trigger the network’s welcome screen. Complete every sign-in or terms step.
The Wi‑Fi connection indicator describes the link between the tablet and the access point; it does not guarantee that the hotspot has granted internet access. A portal may also expire, require a new acceptance after a period of time, or reject a sign-in until the provider’s terms are accepted. Follow the page shown by the operator rather than entering your home-network credentials into an unfamiliar form.
Amazon’s public-hotspot guidance warns that cancelling the sign-in can leave the tablet showing a Wi‑Fi connection while blocking internet access. Reopen the portal and finish it instead of repeatedly entering the Wi‑Fi password. If the page still will not complete, the hotspot operator—not your home internet provider—is the relevant contact.
Compare with a phone hotspot
Connect to a smartphone hotspot after checking the public portal. Successful hotspot access narrows the issue to the original network or its sign-in process. Failure on both networks suggests a tablet-side issue and justifies the network reset and software check described earlier.
Compare another device without overinterpreting it
If another device also has no internet on the same public or home network, the tablet is unlikely to be the only cause. If another device works, the tablet may still be blocked by a portal session, saved network state, or software issue. Use the comparison to choose the next test; it is not proof that a component has failed.

Complete setup and account login
If the tablet will not power up
Charge the device before attempting setup. Amazon’s Alexa Tablet setup page directs users to charge a device that does not power on and, after an error, hold the power button for 20 seconds to restart it.
Do not treat a power-up failure as a Wi‑Fi failure until the tablet can remain on long enough to display its setup controls. Once it starts, continue with the network and account checks separately so an interrupted setup is not confused with a bad password.
Use the right account for the service
Amazon’s setup instructions distinguish between account types. Google sign-in is recommended for Google Play and Google apps. Amazon sign-in is used for Amazon apps and services such as Alexa, Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Amazon Photos. If an account password is rejected, use Amazon’s password-reset flow rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.
An account error at setup does not establish that Wi‑Fi is broken. If the tablet can display the login page but rejects credentials, finish the account recovery process first. After changing a password, use the new credentials consistently rather than alternating between an old saved password and the new one.
Finish setup without Wi‑Fi, then connect later
Initial setup can complete without Wi‑Fi, but apps and some features require internet access and become available after the tablet connects. If the network cannot be found or joined during setup, use the Wi‑Fi troubleshooting sequence in this article, then return to the setup task once connectivity is restored.

Apps that crash, freeze or will not open
The available Alexa Tablet setup and Wi‑Fi instructions do not provide a verified, model-specific procedure for post-setup app crashes. Amazon’s broader Fire Tablet help index lists subjects such as resolving app errors, clearing app cache or data, and force-closing an app, but the index itself supplies no steps, and those procedures have not been established for the Alexa Tablet covered here.
First determine whether the app or the connection is failing
Try loading a simple page in Silk. If web access also fails, return to the Wi‑Fi and hotspot diagnostics rather than changing app data. If Silk works but one app fails, record whether the problem is limited to that app, whether another Amazon or Google app opens, and whether the failure began immediately after setup or after an update. These observations help support staff select instructions for the exact model and software release.
Do not import an unverified Fire Tablet procedure
Do not assume that clearing an app’s cache or data is harmless, and do not apply a Fire Tablet menu path merely because the device looks similar. Clearing data can affect an app’s local state or sign-in, and the consequences for this exact tablet and app are not established by the available guidance. A factory reset is likewise not instructed on the Alexa Tablet Wi‑Fi page; do not present it as the standard fix.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A factory reset is especially disruptive because it is broader than the documented network reset and can require setup and account sign-in again. Nothing in the Alexa Tablet Wi‑Fi instructions makes it the next step for a connection problem. Keep destructive actions out of the routine sequence unless current, model-specific instructions explicitly call for them.
Prepare useful information before seeking the exact procedure
Write down the app’s name, the exact error text, what action triggers the failure, the tablet’s precise model, and its installed software version. Note whether other apps open and whether the tablet has internet access in Silk. Use those details when consulting the current official instructions for that model and software release. This record prevents a generic Fire Tablet article from being mistaken for an Alexa Tablet procedure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when the internet provider or hotspot operator is the right contact
- Contact your internet provider: multiple devices cannot connect to the same home network even after the modem and router are rebooted.
- Contact a public-network operator: the tablet associates with the hotspot but its sign-in or terms page will not complete.
- Continue tablet troubleshooting: other devices work, the tablet fails on both home Wi‑Fi and a phone hotspot, or only the tablet’s settings and software appear affected.
When contacting the internet provider, report that more than one device fails and that the modem and router have been rebooted. When contacting a public-network operator, explain that the tablet connects to the access point but cannot complete the welcome or terms page. Giving the operator the symptom stage avoids being sent through unrelated password steps.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Repeating the Wi‑Fi password on a captive portal: a public hotspot may require a separate browser sign-in after association.
- Assuming “connected” means online: the indicator can remain visible while portal access is incomplete.
- Resetting everything too early: first check Airplane mode, credentials, another device, distance and interference.
- Confusing a hotspot result with proof of hardware failure: it narrows the source of the problem but does not identify a defective router or tablet component.
- Using instructions for a different product: Fire Tablet menu paths and app procedures are not automatically valid for an Alexa Tablet.
- Clearing app data without understanding the consequence: the model-specific effect and recovery steps are not established here.
- Factory-resetting for a routine Wi‑Fi failure: the Alexa Tablet Wi‑Fi page does not instruct that step.
- Changing mesh settings without recording them: keep the current network name, security type and password available before making equipment changes.
A safe order of operations
- Identify whether the failure is setup, Wi‑Fi association, internet access after connection, or an individual app.
- Record the tablet model, software version, network type and exact error.
- Turn off Airplane mode and verify the network name and password.
- Check another device on the same network.
- Move the tablet nearer the router and away from interference; temporarily disconnect competing devices.
- Restart the tablet, using the 20-second power-button hold after a setup error or freeze.
- Install any software update offered for the exact tablet.
- Try a phone hotspot to compare network behavior.
- For a hidden network, add it manually and confirm the hidden-network option under Advanced.
- Use Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi, then reboot the modem and router.
- On public Wi‑Fi, open Silk and complete the captive-portal sign-in instead of cancelling it.
- For app crashes, stop short of unverified cache, data-clearing or factory-reset instructions and consult documentation for the exact model and software.
Move to the next step only when the previous result is clear. For example, a working phone hotspot supports investigating the home network, while failure on both networks supports checking the tablet’s settings and exact model documentation. This sequence preserves saved app state and account information until a current, model-specific instruction justifies a more disruptive change.
Amazon Customer Service pages were accessed in October 2026; labels, supported models and app instructions can change. Confirm the current on-device wording before following a destructive or account-affecting step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Alexa Tablet say it is connected to Wi‑Fi but have no internet?
On a public hotspot, open Silk and complete the welcome, terms or sign-in page. Cancelling that portal can leave the tablet showing Wi‑Fi connected without internet. On a home network, compare another device and test a phone hotspot.
What should I try first when the tablet cannot join Wi‑Fi?
Turn off Airplane mode, verify the network name and password, test another device, move closer to the router, and reduce interference. Then restart the tablet and check for an available software update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I connect to a hidden Wi‑Fi network?
Add the network manually, enter its exact name and password, open Advanced, and confirm the hidden-network option before trying to connect.
What does a successful phone-hotspot test mean?
It indicates that the tablet can use that hotspot and points toward the home network, its coverage or its security configuration. It does not prove that a specific router part is defective.
Will resetting Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi erase the tablet?
The documented network reset is not a factory reset, but it removes saved Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth settings. Have your passwords available and expect to reconnect those devices afterward.
Should I clear an app’s cache or data when it crashes?
The Alexa Tablet-specific sources do not verify those steps. Do not import a Fire Tablet procedure automatically. Record the app, exact error, model and software version and consult current instructions for that exact device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I contact my internet provider?
Contact the provider when multiple devices cannot connect to the same home network after the modem and router are rebooted. For a public hotspot whose sign-in page will not complete, contact the hotspot operator instead.
Can I finish Alexa Tablet setup without Wi‑Fi?
Initial setup can complete without Wi‑Fi, but apps and some features require internet access. Connect the tablet later and return to the Wi‑Fi troubleshooting sequence if the network cannot be found or joined.
The Bottom Line
Start with the simple, reversible checks: Airplane mode, credentials, another device, distance, interference and a tablet restart. Use a phone hotspot to compare networks, complete any public captive-portal sign-in, install the offered software update, and use the documented Bluetooth-and-Wi‑Fi reset only after those checks. Keep Fire Tablet app procedures and factory resets out of the routine path unless current instructions for the exact Alexa Tablet model confirm them.
