Why will Tales of Eternia Remastered not launch?

- Open Settings in Windows.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates and restart when Windows requests it.
- Try the game again only after the restart has completed.
This matters because the published PC information targets Windows 10 and Windows 11 on the official Japanese site, while the current Steam rendering lists Windows 11. If your installation is outside those listed versions, compatibility is not established by the published requirements. Steam’s recommended notes also mention Windows 10 version 1809 or later, so record the exact Windows version rather than simply writing “Windows 10.”
2. Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver offered for your exact graphics processor by its manufacturer, then reboot Windows. Record the GPU model and driver date before changing anything. That record helps distinguish a driver change from a file-verification result if the behavior changes. Do not assume that a driver update proves the game was defective; Steam lists driver updates as a general launch check.
When comparing a laptop or desktop with the store listing, identify the GPU that is actually rendering the game. A machine can report integrated and discrete graphics separately, and the model name alone does not show how much video memory is available. Note the GPU model, VRAM and DirectX 12 support together. These are comparison points, not evidence that any particular model has been tested with this remaster.

3. Verify the installed game files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Tales of Eternia Remastered and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Verification can replace a missing or damaged file. It does not add a patch that the developer has not released, and it cannot correct hardware below the published requirement. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, make a note of that result; if it reports no problem, move to the next check rather than repeatedly verifying the same installation.

Exit background applications that are not required for Windows or Steam, then retry. Steam specifically recommends disabling non-essential software that may interfere with Steam. For a clean comparison, close overlays, capture tools, hardware-monitoring utilities and other programs that inject windows or telemetry into games, but re-enable them one at a time after the game starts. If disabling everything changes nothing, restore your normal applications rather than leaving unrelated software disabled permanently.
Change only one category at a time where possible. Closing several programs and updating a driver simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret. Record whether the failure is a silent return to the desktop, an on-screen Steam error or a window that remains open but does not render. That distinction gives Steam or Bandai Namco support a more useful starting point than a general report of “it will not launch.”
5. Compare your computer with the requirements
Write down your Windows edition, processor, system memory, graphics card, graphics memory, DirectX support and free disk space. Compare each item with the table below instead of relying on a single “gaming PC” label. A computer just above minimum can still have launch or performance problems, as Steam warns.
Do not treat the lowest listed GPU as a promise of identical results across every system. The requirements name several alternative graphics processors from different generations and vendors. Their driver support, VRAM amounts and performance characteristics differ. Meeting one line in the table establishes only that the component is within the published tier; it does not guarantee a locked frame rate or eliminate scene-specific dips.

PC requirements and what the numbers mean
The two published listings do not display every field identically. The Japanese specification page names Windows 10 and Windows 11, an HDD and a minimum graphics tier that includes several alternative GPUs. Steam currently renders Windows 11, the same named CPU/GPU tier, 4 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 8 GB of available storage. Recheck the live listing because store text can change after launch.

The 1080p/60fps figures are Steam’s product-listing estimates, not an independent benchmark. They do not promise a locked 60 frames per second in every scene. The Japanese site likewise says frame rate can temporarily vary according to the play situation and environment.
The storage entries should also be read carefully. The Japanese page identifies an HDD but does not state capacity in the listed specification, while Steam shows 8 GB available storage. Leave more free space than the bare number where practical so Steam can install or replace files, but do not describe extra free space as a confirmed performance fix. The published figure is the one to compare against the live store page.
What to do when the game starts but runs poorly
Separate a requirement problem from a scene-specific dip
First note whether the problem occurs at the title screen, throughout play or only during visually intensive scenes. The Steam listing explicitly warns that frame rate may drop in graphics-intensive scenes, and the Japanese site describes temporary variation by play conditions and environment. A brief dip in one demanding scene is therefore different from a system-wide inability to start or render the game.
- If the game never reaches a window, prioritize release availability, Windows, driver, file-integrity and interference checks.
- If it starts but is consistently slow, compare your processor, GPU, VRAM, RAM and DirectX 12 support with the published requirements.
- If it is mostly smooth and dips only in demanding scenes, test the Steam-estimated Low preset before assuming a corrupted installation.
- If the issue appears after changing a driver or another setting, undo that one change and retest so the cause remains identifiable.
Use Low settings as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure
Steam’s listing associates its 1080p/60fps estimate with Low settings. After the game launches, select the lowest available graphics preset and use a 1080p output for a controlled comparison. If performance improves, raise individual options gradually until the problem returns. This experiment identifies a graphics-load limit; it does not establish that the title has a bug or that every computer can sustain 60fps.
The High-setting note is also conditional: Steam pairs 1080p/60fps with a 4 GB VRAM GPU and Windows 10 version 1809 or later in its recommended information. A GPU with less VRAM, an older Windows build or a system near the minimum tier should not be judged against that High estimate.
Use the same location and display resolution for each comparison. If frame rate changes only when entering a graphics-intensive scene, write down the scene and whether the change is temporary. The official material gives no measured frame-time threshold, so avoid assigning a precise percentage or claiming that a particular setting guarantees recovery.

Console editions: how to interpret a problem
The published console platforms are Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S. The available material does not document a confirmed console crash pattern, performance defect or title-specific recovery procedure. If a console edition is unavailable before its applicable October 15 listing date, treat that as release timing rather than a failed installation. After release, use the platform’s current store and system-status information, then consult the publisher’s support channel if the issue persists.

- Steam shows the game but it closes before a window appears: update Windows, update the graphics driver, verify files and close non-essential software in that order.
- Steam launches but performance is poor everywhere: compare every PC component with the requirements, especially DirectX 12 capability and graphics memory.
- Performance drops only in demanding scenes: test Low settings at 1080p and note whether the reduction is temporary or continuous.
- No change after the general checks: save your Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, Steam error text and the exact step at which launch fails. Use that record when contacting Steam or the publisher after release.
Information to collect before contacting support
Support can act more quickly when the report distinguishes availability from execution. Include the platform and store region, the edition you own, the date and approximate time of the attempt, and whether the title was released for that platform. On PC, add the Windows version, processor, total RAM, GPU model, VRAM, DirectX 12 status, available storage and driver date.
