Fix Roku problems by narrowing the symptom before changing settings: determine whether it affects one title, one app, every Roku app, an external HDMI player, or the TV’s audio and network. Start with reversible checks—correct input, cable and power connections, another show or app, network diagnostics, and a restart—then update or reinstall an app. Reserve a factory reset for failures that survive those steps because a reset erases settings, apps, account links, and preferences.
These instructions cover Roku TVs with built-in streaming and televisions using an external Roku player. Menu names and available ports can differ by Roku model and software version.
First, identify where the failure is
The fastest fix depends on the scope and path of the problem. Before buying a cable, changing picture settings, or resetting the TV, run these isolation checks:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What to compare | What the result suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| One title versus another title in the same app | Only one title fails | Open the title’s audio, language, or playback options and check the provider’s service status or account. |
| One app versus a second app | Only one app fails | Update, restart, or reinstall that app; verify its subscription and sign-in. |
| All Roku apps | Device-wide playback or network issue | Check Settings > Network, run Check connection, and restart the Roku and network equipment. |
| Built-in Roku TV app versus an external player | Failure follows the HDMI player or input | Use the TV remote’s Input/Source control and test the HDMI path. |
| Picture versus sound | Audio-only or video-only fault | Use the picture or audio branch below rather than resetting everything. |
Write down what works and what does not. For example, “all apps buffer, but the antenna picture is normal” points toward the network or Roku software, while “only the player on HDMI 2 is blank” points toward input selection, a cable, or that HDMI port.

Black screen or no picture
When an external Roku player is connected by HDMI
Start with the TV input. Roku identifies selecting the correct input as the “most common issue” in its black-screen guidance. Turn on the television, then press the TV remote’s Input, Source, or similarly named button and select the HDMI port where the Roku player is connected. If you cycle through inputs, pause about 10 seconds on each one so the TV has time to detect a video signal. This procedure applies to an external Roku player; a Roku TV’s built-in streaming does not need an HDMI cable for its internal apps. Roku’s black-screen troubleshooting steps cover this connection scenario.
- Confirm the player’s HDMI plug is fully inserted into the player and the TV.
- Disconnect and reconnect the player’s power cable, then wait for it to start.
- Temporarily connect the player directly to the TV. Bypass an AV receiver or soundbar while testing, because either device can interrupt the video handshake.
- Try another HDMI cable and another HDMI port on the TV.
- If possible, connect the player to a different television. A picture on the second TV isolates the original TV input or cable; no picture on either TV points more strongly to the player, its power, or the cable.
Do not assume that a new cable will fix every black screen. Cable and port replacement is useful only when those tests indicate an HDMI connection problem. It is not a general remedy for a Roku TV’s integrated apps.
When the Roku TV’s built-in apps are blank
Use the TV’s own Roku interface rather than changing HDMI inputs. Press Home and try another built-in app. If menus and another app display normally, the panel and basic video path are working; continue with the app-specific streaming steps. If the Home screen itself is absent, unplug the TV, reconnect it, and perform a system restart as described in the restart section. Check whether an antenna, game console, or other input has a picture; that comparison helps separate a display problem from a Roku software problem.
When only an antenna or another source is affected
If streaming apps display correctly but an antenna, game console, or other HDMI source is blank, select that source explicitly and check its cable or signal. If the external source works on another TV, the original input or source device needs model-specific support. Avoid a factory reset until you have isolated the failing path; resetting Roku software will not repair a disconnected antenna or a failed source device.

No sound, wrong language, or missing surround audio
One show has no sound or the wrong language
When the problem is limited to one program, open that app’s playback audio menu while the show is playing. Roku’s instructions describe pressing the Star button on the Roku remote during playback, then selecting the desired audio track or language. A title may default to an alternate language or offer no surround track even though other programs do. Roku’s streaming-app feature guide explains this program-level check.
- Start a different episode or title in the same app.
- Open a second app and play a short video.
- Check the program’s sound-track and language choices with the Star-button menu.
If another app has normal audio, the TV speakers and Roku output are probably working; investigate that title, the service account, or the app rather than changing system-wide audio settings.
Every app is silent
Press the TV remote’s volume and mute controls, then test another app. Check whether the TV is sending audio to a soundbar, receiver, headphones, or an ARC/eARC connection that is switched off. For Roku TV Ready equipment, soundbar, and ARC problems, use the support instructions for the exact TV and audio device: menu labels and HDMI-ARC behavior vary by model, so there is no single universal fix.
Restart the Roku system before changing advanced audio options. If silence remains across apps after a restart, test the TV speakers without the external audio device and inspect each cable and power connection. This separates a TV-wide audio fault from an external sound system fault.

A title has no surround sound
Not every program supplies a surround track. Roku recommends switching to stereo for a title that lacks surround: Settings > Audio > Audio mode > Stereo. Then check the title’s playback audio choices again. Stereo is a compatibility setting, not a way to create surround sound that the program does not provide.
Buffering, poor quality, or an app that will not load
Separate a title problem from an app or network problem
Play a different title in the same service, then open a different app. The outcomes direct the fix:
- One title fails: the provider may have a title-specific fault, unavailable stream, or account restriction.
- One app fails: check the service sign-in or subscription, then update, restart, or reinstall that app.
- Several apps fail: check the Roku network connection and restart the Roku and router.
- All streaming is poor but local inputs are fine: concentrate on Wi-Fi, internet service, and competing household traffic.
Roku’s playback troubleshooting guide recommends testing other content, restarting the device, and addressing the network before more disruptive steps.
Check Wi-Fi and run Roku’s connection test
- Open Settings > Network > About to view the connection details.
- Choose Check connection. The test distinguishes a Roku-to-router problem from a router-to-internet problem.
- If Roku cannot reach the router, reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi network and re-enter its password. Move the TV or player closer to the router if the signal is weak.
- If Roku reaches the router but the router has no internet, restart the network equipment and check whether other devices are online.
Roku’s UK network guide describes signal labels this way: Excellent means strong and stable; Good is reliable for most streaming; Fair is weak and may cause pauses or lower quality; and Poor is very weak and likely to buffer or disconnect. The labels describe radio conditions, not a guarantee that every service will play smoothly. See Roku’s connection-check instructions.

Restart the router and reduce competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth streams while testing. Roku’s playback instructions tell users to unplug the router for 10 seconds and reconnect it; its network-troubleshooting procedure describes a 30-second unplug/reconnect. Follow the interval in the Roku article you are using rather than treating either interval as a universal rule. Wait for the router’s internet connection to return, then run Check connection again.
Where the exact TV or player includes an Ethernet port, a wired connection can be more stable than Wi-Fi. Confirm that your model has the port before planning a wired setup; availability differs across Roku hardware.
Use speed figures as a guide, not a promise
Roku Support UK lists these typical requirements, in a page last updated June 3, 2026:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Video quality | Typical minimum listed by Roku | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 3 Mbps | Services can set different requirements, and other household traffic can reduce available bandwidth. |
| HD | 5 Mbps | A speed test at the router does not guarantee the same speed at the TV over Wi-Fi. |
| 4K Ultra HD | 25 Mbps or more | 4K services may impose their own conditions; weak signal quality can still cause buffering. |
These figures are Roku’s typical requirements, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Distance, interference, router load, service outages, and simultaneous use can all lower effective performance.

Update or reinstall an app that crashes or shows black
After testing another app, restart the Roku and check for a software or app update using the update controls available on your model. If the same app still crashes, will not load, or opens to a black screen, remove and reinstall it. Removing an app can affect subscriptions billed through Roku, so confirm how the subscription is managed and be prepared to sign in again before deleting it. If only that service remains broken after reinstalling, check its account status or outage information rather than resetting the entire TV.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can’t I open the Streaming Store on my Roku streaming device or Roku TV?
First determine whether the Store alone is unavailable or whether all Roku apps fail. Open another app and run Settings > Network > Check connection. If other apps work, restart the Roku and try the Store again; a Store-specific or account-service issue is more likely than a failed display. If multiple apps cannot open, use the network and router steps above. A factory reset should not be the first response to a Store-loading problem because it removes your app setup and account links without proving that the Store or network is the cause.
Restart the Roku before considering a reset
System restart from the Roku TV menu
For many Roku TVs, open Settings > System > Power > System restart. Some software versions omit the Power submenu; if so, select System restart directly under Settings > System. Confirm the restart and wait for the Home screen to return. Roku also describes unplugging and reconnecting the device as a restart method when the menu is inaccessible.

It preserves your apps, account link, and preferences, unlike a factory reset.
When updating and reinstalling are appropriate
- Restart: first response to a one-time freeze, black app screen, or failed connection.
- Update: use when an app repeatedly crashes or a known software fix may be available.
- Reinstall: use when one app remains broken after a restart and update; expect to sign in again.
- Factory reset: use only after device-wide failures survive the less destructive steps.
Factory reset: last resort and preparation
A factory reset erases personal preferences, unlinks the Roku device from its Roku account, removes installed apps and account information, and returns settings to their initial state. You must complete guided setup, reconnect Wi-Fi, reinstall apps, and sign in again. Roku’s factory-reset instructions explain the process for Roku TVs, players, and projectors.
Prepare before resetting
- Roku account email and password.
- Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Login details for each streaming service.
- Any parental-control PIN or other setup credentials.
- A list or photo of important picture, audio, and accessibility settings you want to restore.
Reset only after the evidence points to Roku software
Resetting is reasonable when several built-in apps fail, network and cable checks are sound, a system restart and app maintenance do not help, and you can complete setup again. It will not repair a failed HDMI cable, an unavailable streaming service, a dead router, a damaged display panel, or an audio device that is powered off.
Roku describes Recovery Mode as its most invasive reset method. Use it only after the normal troubleshooting and reset paths have failed and follow the instructions for the exact model. If the TV cannot complete setup after the reset, retain the model and software details when contacting Roku’s troubleshooting support.
Quick Recap
A compact symptom-to-action checklist
- External player, black screen: select the correct TV HDMI input, wait for detection, reseat power and HDMI, bypass the receiver or soundbar, then test another cable, port, or TV.
- Built-in app, black screen: test another title and app, restart, update, and reinstall the affected app if necessary.
- One title has wrong language: press Star during playback and choose the correct audio track.
- No sound in every app: check mute, volume, speaker output, soundbar/ARC power, and cables; then restart and test the TV speakers.
- No surround: verify that the title offers surround; if it does not, use Settings > Audio > Audio mode > Stereo.
- Buffering everywhere: run Settings > Network > Check connection, reduce competing traffic, restart the router and Roku, and improve Wi-Fi placement.
- One app will not load: verify the account, update, restart, and reinstall; check subscription billing before removing it.
- Everything still fails: document the tests, prepare credentials, and consider a factory reset only after reversible fixes are exhausted.
