Most PS5 Pro display faults come from one link in the HDMI chain or from an output mode the TV, cable, receiver, or game cannot handle. Start with the reversible checks: select the correct TV input, reseat the cable, connect the console directly to the display, test another HDMI port and known-good cable, then verify the console and TV settings. Only after that should you use Safe Mode or clear the system cache.
This guide covers blank screens, flicker, missing 4K/120 Hz, HDR and VRR surprises, PS4 image-enhancement problems, general system slowdowns, and the limits of 8K output.
First, isolate where the problem is
An image can fail at any point between the PS5 Pro and the panel: the selected TV input, an HDMI plug, the console port, the TV port, a receiver or sound bar, a capture device, a cable, display firmware, or a console output setting. Change one variable at a time so you know which change helped.

Fix a black screen or intermittent signal
Work through the physical connection
- Turn on both the PS5 Pro and the display.
- Use the TV remote to select the exact HDMI input where the console is connected. Do not assume the TV will switch inputs automatically.
- Unplug and firmly reseat the HDMI connector at both ends. Inspect for a loose fit or visible damage.
- Move the cable to another HDMI input on the display. Check the TV manual because only some inputs may support 4K at 120 Hz.
- Temporarily remove an AV receiver, sound bar, home-theater switch, or capture device. Connect the PS5 Pro straight to the TV or monitor.
- Install the latest firmware offered by the display manufacturer, then check the manual for a setting that enables enhanced, high-bandwidth, or 4K/120 HDMI operation.
- Test with another known-working HDMI cable. Sony recommends the cable supplied with the console for high-performance features; an older cable may still work for less demanding modes, but it is not proof that the path supports 4K/120 Hz.
Do not buy a cable before performing the direct-connection and port tests. If the included cable works when connected directly, replacing it is unnecessary. If a swap is useful, choose an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable explicitly rated for 4K/120 Hz.
Recover a blank output with Safe Mode
If the screen remains blank after the connection checks, use the console’s low-resolution recovery path:
- Turn the PS5 Pro off by holding its power button for three seconds.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, roughly seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Change Video Output.
- Choose Change Resolution to force a compatible output, or Change HDCP Mode when the problem points to copy-protection negotiation.
After the display returns, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and choose a mode your display supports. If Safe Mode cannot restore a picture, use Sony’s Safe Mode guidance and then PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly changing random settings.

Restore 4K at 120 Hz
4K/120 Hz is a chain requirement, not a console-only switch. The display must support 4K at 120 Hz, the HDMI input must have the required bandwidth, the TV may need an enhanced-input option enabled, the firmware should be current, and the cable must be rated for the signal. The game must also support 120 Hz output; a compatible TV alone cannot make every title run at 120 frames per second.

| Item | What to verify | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Display capability | Specifications list 4K (2160p) at 120 Hz, not merely 4K at 60 Hz or 1080p at 120 Hz | The console falls back to 1080p/120 Hz or 4K/60 Hz |
| HDMI input | Use the input identified by the TV manufacturer as supporting the highest bandwidth; enable its enhanced or 4K mode if required | One port works while another silently limits refresh rate |
| Cable | Use the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz | Handshake failures, black screens, or intermittent output |
| Signal path | Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display while testing | Receiver, sound bar, switch, or capture device negotiates a lower mode |
| Console output | In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic | A manually forced mode is incompatible with the display |
| Game support | Check the game’s own graphics or performance options and its documented 120 Hz support | The system supports 120 Hz but the title renders at another frame rate |
Use Sony’s resolution guide for the console-side checklist. The Video Output information screen also reports what the connected HDMI device advertises for resolution, VRR, and HDR. Treat that information as the capability of the current connection, not a promise that every game will use the maximum mode.
If 120 Hz itself causes the video problem
When enabling 120 Hz produces a blank or unstable image, turn off 120 Hz Output temporarily in the Video Output settings. Confirm a stable 4K/60 or 1080p signal, update the display, and then test 120 Hz again after the direct-connection checks. This is a diagnostic step; it does not improve image quality by itself.
Stop flicker without hiding the cause
For flicker, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1, then -2 if needed. Sony states that limiting the 4K transfer rate may improve picture quality: the official guidance says to try -1 or -2 when the screen flickers.
| Setting | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Allows the console to negotiate the widest set of 4K output formats | May expose a marginal cable, port, or HDMI-handshake problem |
| -1 | Limits the 4K transfer rate | Limits 4K/120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz color formats; the exact remaining formats depend on the display |
| -2 | Applies a further limited transfer-rate profile | Also limits 4K/120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz color formats, with a different set of available formats from -1 |
These values are compatibility tools, not universal picture-quality upgrades. Once the image is stable, test the original setting with a direct connection and a suitable cable. If flicker returns only through a receiver or sound bar, that device or its firmware is the likely bottleneck.

Understand HDR, VRR, and ALLM behavior
HDR
In the PS5 Pro’s Video Output settings, Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output. On When Supported leaves non-HDR content in SDR and enables HDR only when the content supports it. If colors look washed out or overly bright in an SDR game, switch to On When Supported and compare.
VRR
Variable Refresh Rate requires a compatible TV or monitor and a compatible game. Results vary by display. If enabling Apply to Unsupported Games creates judder, flicker, or another unexpected effect, turn that option off. Verify the TV’s own VRR setting and use the Video Output information page to confirm that the console sees VRR support.
ALLM and low-latency mode
Auto Low Latency Mode requires current system software. Sony notes that VRR can trigger low-latency behavior even when ALLM is set to off. To fully disable ALLM behavior, turn VRR off as well. This matters when diagnosing a TV that changes picture presets, disables processing, or reports a game mode unexpectedly.

Fix a PS4 game that does not look enhanced
On the PS5 Pro model group covered by Sony’s CFI-7000 documentation, Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games can improve compatible PS4 titles. The connected screen must support 4K or 1440p. Check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and enable the option when a supported title is not showing the expected enhancement.
Sony also advises turning the setting off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Enhancement is not guaranteed for every PS4 title, and a display that cannot accept 4K or 1440p cannot show this option’s intended output. The Pro troubleshooting index is available at Sony’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting page.

Rebuild the database when content indexing is suspect
From the same Safe Mode menu, choose Rebuild Database when the system has content-listing problems or the interface remains abnormal after clearing the cache. The console scans the drive and creates a new content database. The duration depends on the amount of stored data.
Do not lead with a reset
Resetting the console or reinstalling system software deletes user data. Back up saves and understand the recovery steps before selecting any reset option. Neither cache clearing nor database rebuilding is evidence that a particular game’s rendering engine, patch, or frame-rate target has been repaired; the reviewed official guidance does not provide a Pro-specific procedure for game-by-game frame-rate drops or detailed thermal diagnostics.
Set realistic expectations for 8K
8K output is available only on PS5 Pro consoles in Sony’s CFI-7000 model group and requires a display that supports 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression (DSC). It is not a general “everything is 8K” mode: Sony’s compatibility guidance describes select games as capable of 8K, while system and media applications are listed up to 4K.
Enabling 8K also changes other features:
- VRR is disabled in 8K output.
- Some simultaneous Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting, and Remote Play combinations are unavailable or constrained.
- Connecting PlayStation VR2 while the TV is set to 8K prevents the headset from displaying video.
If the display cannot maintain a stable 8K/60 DSC link, select a lower output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output rather than treating a blank screen as a console failure. The 8K requirements and limitations are documented in Sony’s resolution guidance.
Use a controlled test sequence
When several symptoms overlap, this order minimizes unnecessary changes:
- Write down the current resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, ALLM, and Video Transfer Rate values.
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display and select the correct HDMI input.
- Use the included HDMI cable, or a known-good Ultra High-Speed cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Try the display’s certified high-bandwidth HDMI port and update its firmware.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Test a stable game or system screen before changing HDR, VRR, or ALLM.
- If flicker remains, test Video Transfer Rate -1 and then -2, noting which output formats disappear.
- If there is still no image, use Safe Mode’s Change Video Output.
- For system-wide slowdowns, clear the system software cache and, if necessary, rebuild the database.
- Reconnect intermediary equipment only after the direct path works; the component that reintroduces the fault is the one to update or replace.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact PlayStation Repairs after a direct connection, alternate port, known-good cable, current display firmware, and Safe Mode video-output changes fail to restore a signal. Seek display-manufacturer support when another source also flickers on the same HDMI input or when the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode will not stay enabled. For a single game’s frame-rate problem, check that game’s patch notes and graphics settings; the general PS5 procedures above cannot establish that the game itself is at fault.
