Most “PS5 emulator won’t start” and “game not showing” errors have one of four causes: the wrong emulator or build, unmet project requirements, an invalid game path or dump layout, or a title that is not yet supported. Start by identifying the exact project and version, then check its published requirements and compatibility list before changing settings or buying hardware. The sequence below uses KytyPS5 documentation as the PS5-specific reference and clearly separates it from shadPS4, which emulates PlayStation 4.
Because KytyPS5 is still actively developed, a symptom can change meaning from one release to the next. A crash that is a known limitation in one build may be fixed, regressed or reported differently in another. Treat every compatibility entry, issue comment and workaround as version-specific, and keep the complete log from the build that actually failed.
1. Confirm that you are actually using a PS5 emulator
Project names and search results are easy to confuse. KytyPS5 is a free, open-source PlayStation 5 translation layer for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. It is actively developed, so behavior can change substantially between builds; crashes, graphical glitches and title-specific failures are expected during development. Its official documentation and compatibility list are at the KytyPS5 repository.
shadPS4 is a PlayStation 4 emulator, not a PS5 emulator. Its own Quickstart Guide warns that it is early in development, many games do not work, and working games can still have emulation issues. Its requirements, settings and troubleshooting steps cannot be used to diagnose KytyPS5 or establish PS5 compatibility.

Record the exact build
- Open the emulator’s About, release or version information and copy the full version or commit identifier.
- Note whether the problem began immediately after an update, driver change or game-file change.
- Confirm that the download came through the project’s official release route, rather than an unofficial repack.
- Look up the exact game in the project’s compatibility list and check which build was tested.
Keep the old build information if you update. “Latest version” is not enough for a reproducible report: maintainers need the precise release that produced the crash. A failure on one build does not prove that a title is universally unsupported, and a compatibility report for another build does not guarantee the same result on yours.
2. Check the project’s actual system requirements
Do this before reinstalling Windows, changing random graphics options or purchasing hardware. The following requirements are published by KytyPS5; they are not independent performance benchmarks or universal requirements for every PS5 project.

KytyPS5’s macOS note is especially important: Apple Silicon support is described as experimental, so a launch or rendering failure on that platform should be compared with the project’s current macOS reports rather than assumed to be a Windows-equivalent bug. On Linux, “current distribution” is a project-level description, not a promise that every older package, window system or driver combination behaves identically.

KytyPS5 says it can boot 2D and 3D games made with Unreal Engine 4 or 5, Unity and custom engines. “Can boot” is not a promise that every title is playable, stable or graphically correct; use the title’s compatibility status and the tested build. Engine identification can help you describe a report, but it cannot substitute for a title-specific result.
Do not transfer shadPS4 requirements to PS5 software
For comparison only, shadPS4 lists a four-core/six-thread CPU above 2.5 GHz with x86-64-v3, at least 2 GB of VRAM, Vulkan 1.3 with VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04 or macOS 15.4 or newer. Those figures apply to shadPS4’s PS4 emulator and do not define KytyPS5 requirements.
Do not turn the shadPS4 numbers into a shopping list for a KytyPS5 problem. First verify what KytyPS5 itself publishes for the build you use. A machine can satisfy one project’s checklist and still lack the API, driver behavior or title support needed by another project.

3. Triage a startup failure in the right order
When the emulator will not open at all
- Confirm that your operating system, CPU architecture and Vulkan capability meet the specific project’s published requirements.
- Install or update the graphics driver supplied for your GPU. KytyPS5 specifically asks users to update the driver when reporting rendering problems.
- Launch the official build again and note the exact message, exit code or point at which the window closes.
- Try an empty launch without adding a game. If the program still exits before showing its interface, the issue is with the emulator, runtime, driver or environment rather than a particular title.
- Check the project’s existing issues for the same version, operating system and error text. Do not assume that a workaround for another build remains valid.
Separate a failure before the interface appears from one that occurs after a game is selected. The first category points toward the environment or emulator startup path; the second may involve discovery, the dump layout or title compatibility. This simple distinction makes an issue search much more useful.

- Test whether another title listed as working on the same build reaches the menu. This separates a title-specific compatibility problem from a global installation problem.
- Recheck the game directory and required files rather than replacing files with an unverified download.
- Capture the complete log from the failing launch. Record the action that triggers the crash, such as selecting the title, starting it, loading a save or entering a 3D scene.
- Compare your result with the project’s compatibility entry for that title and build. A crash can be an existing known issue rather than a configuration mistake.
Write down whether the failure occurs while the library scans, while an executable is selected, at a logo, during a menu transition or when a 3D scene begins. These are different reproduction points. Include the same sequence when retesting after a driver or emulator update so that results remain comparable.
4. Fix “game not showing in emulator” and invalid path errors
KytyPS5’s launcher searches configured game folders recursively for game directories containing eboot.bin. A supported ZArchive dump has eboot.bin at the archive root. If a title does not appear, the most useful checks are the configured root, directory nesting and file layout.
Check the folder path
- Open the emulator’s game-folder or library settings and inspect every configured root.
- Use the folder that directly contains the game directories, not a shortcut to a parent that has an extra nesting level.
- Confirm that the path is readable by your account and that the drive is mounted when the emulator starts.
- Rescan or restart the launcher after correcting the path.
Recursive scanning does not mean every possible layout is valid. A directory can be visible to the operating system yet still fail KytyPS5’s discovery rule if the expected executable is one level too deep, has been moved, or belongs to an unsupported dump format. Compare the actual tree with the project’s documented examples instead of guessing from a folder name.
Check the expected layout
- For a game directory, locate
eboot.bininside the directory that the launcher should discover. - For a supported ZArchive dump, verify that
eboot.binis at the archive root rather than buried in another folder. - Do not rename, delete or substitute executable files to make a scan succeed; use a legally obtained dump in the layout documented by the project.
KytyPS5 also documents direct launching with a legally obtained game directory, ELF file or ZArchive dump. If direct launch works but the library remains empty, the problem is probably discovery configuration or layout rather than the title’s ability to boot. If both discovery and direct launch fail, record the exact path or archive type in the log report; do not conceal the layout by repacking files repeatedly.
5. Resolve Vulkan and rendering problems
Symptoms
- The emulator opens but shows a blank or black window.
- Textures are missing, geometry is corrupted or the image flickers.
- The process crashes when a 2D menu changes to a 3D scene.
- A title reaches a logo but fails when shaders or a new rendering feature are used.
Actions supported by the documentation
- Confirm that the installed GPU supports Vulkan 1.3 and that the emulator is using that GPU rather than an unsupported integrated adapter.
- Install the current driver for the exact GPU model. KytyPS5 advises updating the graphics driver before reporting rendering issues.
- Restart the computer after a driver installation and reproduce the same scene.
- Save the complete log and note the driver version, GPU model, operating system and KytyPS5 build.
Rendering symptoms can be title-specific even when the launcher and menus work. Note whether the defect is present in every game or only one title, and whether it starts at a consistent scene. That distinction helps maintainers compare your report with an existing compatibility entry.

Do not present a driver rollback, a particular renderer toggle or a new graphics card as a universal cure. The available project guidance establishes driver currency and Vulkan capability as checks; it does not establish one setting or hardware purchase that fixes every rendering symptom. A new GPU is relevant only when the existing adapter fails the project’s published Vulkan requirement, not merely because a game crashes.
6. Decide whether the title is unsupported or merely misconfigured
Compatibility is project-, title- and build-specific. A game may fail because its engine feature is not implemented, because the current build regressed, because the dump layout is wrong, or because the failure is already listed by maintainers. Use this decision path:
- Does the emulator itself start? If no, investigate environment, driver and project requirements first.
- Does the title appear in the library? If no, inspect the configured path and
eboot.binlayout. - Does a known-working title boot on the same build? If yes, prioritize the failing title’s compatibility status and log.
- Does the project list the exact title and build? Match the reported operating system, emulator version and symptoms before treating the result as comparable.
- Is the behavior different after an update? Record both versions. A regression or changed behavior is plausible in an actively developed project.
KytyPS5’s ability to boot examples built with Unreal Engine, Unity or custom engines demonstrates broad engine coverage, not complete compatibility. Do not infer playability from the game engine alone.
Compatibility labels should be read as evidence about a particular test, not as a guarantee for every PC. Differences in build, operating system, driver and dump layout can change the result. If your symptom matches a listed issue, cite that entry in your report and add what differs in your setup.
7. Produce a useful bug report instead of a guess
When the basic checks fail, a complete report is more valuable than a list of random settings. KytyPS5 asks issue reporters to state the tested version and attach the complete log.
Include these details
- Operating system and version, including whether macOS is running on Apple Silicon.
- Exact KytyPS5 release or build identifier.
- CPU model, GPU model, Vulkan capability and graphics-driver version.
- Game title, region or edition when relevant, and the source type of the legally obtained dump.
- The configured path or archive layout, without publishing copyrighted game files.
- The precise action that triggers the error and whether the emulator reaches a menu, logo or loading screen.
- The complete log as requested by the project, plus a concise reproduction sequence.
State what you tried and what changed: for example, whether updating the driver altered a black screen, or whether the same title failed on two consecutive builds. Avoid conclusions such as “the emulator is broken” when the evidence only shows one title failing. Keep personal information and copyrighted content out of public attachments while preserving the technical details maintainers need.

Search existing issues first and use the project’s issue template. A report that says only “PS5 emulator crashes” cannot distinguish a driver failure, an unsupported title, a malformed path or a build regression.

8. Compare projects or builds without misleading yourself
If you are deciding whether to test another project or an older build, compare the same five factors rather than relying on a performance claim:

If you switch builds, change one variable at a time and retain the old version number so the comparison is meaningful.

10. A compact recovery checklist
- Write down the emulator name, exact build, operating system and game title.
- Verify that the project targets PS5 and that your OS, CPU, GPU and Vulkan version meet its published requirements.
- Update the graphics driver, then reboot and reproduce the issue.
- Check the project compatibility list for the same title and build.
- For a missing game, correct the configured root and confirm the documented
eboot.binlayout. - Test a known-working title to separate a global startup failure from title compatibility.
- Capture the complete log and the exact action that triggers the error.
- Search existing issues and submit a project-template report with all versions and hardware details.
This order prevents wasted effort: identify the target, verify the environment, validate discovery, compare compatibility evidence, then report a reproducible failure. It also keeps project-specific facts separate from assumptions about emulation in general.
