Most problems after moving from Windows to Linux come from three changes: Windows installers are not Linux applications, Linux uses a different filesystem layout, and hardware support depends on the distribution, release, and exact device. Before changing a driver, partition, or repository, record your Linux distribution and version, computer model, device model, and the complete error message.

This guide uses Ubuntu menu names where they are specific to Ubuntu. Other distributions may use different tools, package formats, and driver procedures. If your problem involves a disk or partition, make a verified backup first and stop if the installer’s choices are unclear.

Start with identification and a safe recovery plan

A precise description is more useful than a symptom such as “Linux is broken.” Write down the distribution (for example, Ubuntu, Fedora, or another distribution), its release, your computer model, the affected component or application, and the exact wording of any error. If the problem appears only after sleep, only on battery, or only with a particular network or printer, record that condition too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collect the details before changing anything

  • Open your distribution’s About or System Information page and note the distribution name and version.
  • Note the computer manufacturer and model. For a problem device, record its make and model from its label, manual, or the system information panel.
  • Copy the complete error message, including capitalization and any code.
  • Record whether the same device worked in a live USB session, in Windows, or on another computer.
  • Keep a phone photo or written record of the current settings before changing them.

These details determine whether an instruction is relevant. A driver procedure that works for one Wi-Fi chipset or one Ubuntu release may be wrong for another distribution or device.

Back up before installation or partition changes

Copy personal files to separate storage before installing Linux, resizing a partition, changing a storage mode, or attempting a repair. A USB flash drive can serve two limited but useful purposes: booting a live Ubuntu desktop and holding a separate copy of important files. No particular capacity, speed, brand, or price is required by the guidance here; choose media that can hold your backup and installation image.

Keep the backup disconnected when you are selecting disks in an installer so that you are less likely to choose it accidentally. Do not treat a successful backup copy as proof that every file is usable: open a few documents and photos from the copy before proceeding.

Test hardware in a live session when possible

Ubuntu can be tried from a USB session before installation. Use that session to test Wi-Fi, sound, Bluetooth, graphics, printers, scanners, external displays, and any other device you need every day. A live session does not prove that every installed-system configuration will work, but it can reveal an unsupported adapter or a missing peripheral before the disk is changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the live session cannot detect a required device, identify the exact model and check the current instructions for your distribution and release before installing. If it works live but fails after installation, the difference may be a driver selection, firmware package, power setting, or configuration change rather than a dead device.

When a Windows application will not install

A file ending in .exe is normally a Windows installer. Downloading it on Linux does not turn it into a native Linux application, so double-clicking it may do nothing or display an error. The first fix is to find an application build made for Linux or a functionally equivalent program distributed for your system.

Use the distribution’s software tools first

  1. Open the distribution’s software center or package manager.
  2. Search for the application name and for the task it performs, such as photo editing, accounting, or video playback.
  3. Read the package description and confirm that it supports your distribution and release.
  4. Install the package through the official distribution repository when it is available.
  5. Launch it and test the files and features that matter to your workflow before removing the Windows installation.

Ubuntu’s package-based installation model is different from downloading a Windows setup file. A Linux package may install shared components and receive updates through the distribution’s normal update process. A third-party Linux build may instead use its own installer or package instructions; verify that the download really comes from the project that publishes the application.

When there is no Linux version

Compatibility is application-specific. Some Windows programs have a supported cross-platform edition, while others can sometimes run through a compatibility layer or virtualized Windows environment. Those routes can have limits involving graphics acceleration, hardware access, licensing, plug-ins, updates, or file formats. Do not assume that a compatibility layer will run every Windows installer or provide every feature.

Compare the exact features you need, not just the application’s name. Check whether collaborators can open the resulting files, whether required plug-ins exist, and whether the workflow depends on a Windows-only device or service. Without the application name and required features, nobody can establish that a replacement is suitable.

Keep Windows for one indispensable workflow

If one application remains essential and has no acceptable Linux path, retaining Windows is a legitimate transition choice. You can use a separate Windows computer or configure a dual-boot installation, but dual boot requires disk space, a backup, and careful partition decisions. It does not solve an unsupported Linux device, and it is not risk-free merely because the installer offers an “alongside” option.

Finding files when there is no C: drive

Linux normally does not organize storage with Windows drive letters such as C: and D:. Its filesystem begins at a single root and presents your personal files through your home folder. For a new Ubuntu desktop user, the home folder is the correct starting point for Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and similar folders.

Use the home folder for new Linux files

  1. Open the file manager from the desktop or applications menu.
  2. Select Home or your user name in the sidebar.
  3. Look in Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Pictures, and other folders under that location.
  4. Save new work there unless you have a specific reason to use another mounted volume.

The labels and sidebar arrangement can differ between desktops, but the principle is the same: your user account has a home directory instead of a Windows-style user profile on C:.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessing a Windows partition

If Windows remains installed, its files may be on an NTFS partition that the Linux desktop can offer in the file manager. Whether it appears and whether it can be opened depends on the disk layout and its current state. A partition left in a hibernated or otherwise inconsistent Windows state may not be safe to modify.

Do not format, resize, or manually mount a partition simply because it is not visible. First identify the disk and partition from the file manager or the installer’s storage view, then consult current distribution-specific instructions. If the data is important, copy it from a known-good backup rather than experimenting on the original.

Removable media

USB drives and memory cards are normally handled by the desktop: connect the device and select it in the file manager sidebar. Safely eject it before unplugging. If it does not appear, try another port and check whether the device is detected at all; a missing mount is different from a damaged filesystem.

Fixing Wi-Fi, printers, sound, Bluetooth, and graphics

Hardware support varies by distribution release and exact chipset. Ubuntu’s hardware guidance treats wireless, printing, sound, Bluetooth, display, and power as separate troubleshooting areas. Use the following order rather than installing a random driver package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Check power, connections, and the visible symptom

  • Confirm that the computer’s wireless switch, airplane-mode key, Bluetooth switch, or printer power is enabled.
  • Reconnect cables, remove and reinsert USB devices, and try a different port.
  • For a display problem, check the monitor input and cable before changing graphics software.
  • For sound, verify the intended output device and its volume or mute state.
  • For a printer or scanner, confirm that it is on the same network or connected by USB and that its status is ready.

These checks do not install anything and often separate a connection problem from a driver problem.

2. Identify the device before choosing a driver

Find the exact manufacturer and model, including the wireless chipset or graphics adapter when the computer documentation provides it. A generic description such as “Intel Wi-Fi” or “NVIDIA graphics” may not identify the needed device or driver branch. Also note the distribution and release; package names and supported drivers can change between releases.

3. Wi-Fi: recognition comes first

Ubuntu’s wireless troubleshooter begins by determining whether the adapter was recognized. If the adapter is not recognized, reconnecting to a network will not fix it; investigate the device and distribution-specific driver path. If it is recognized but cannot connect, check the network name, password, radio state, and whether another device can join the same network.

Do not apply a driver command copied for a different chipset or release. On Ubuntu, a driver choice may be offered through the Ubuntu-specific Additional Drivers interface in the software settings, but the available entries and recommended choice depend on the hardware and release. Older examples mentioning particular vendors are not universal current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Printers and scanners

Test printing from a simple document before troubleshooting a complex application. Confirm the selected printer, queue status, paper, and connection. If the device is not detected, identify whether it is connected by USB or network and check the current distribution guidance for that model. Scanners may require separate support even when printing works.

5. Sound, Bluetooth, and graphics

For sound, select the intended output and input device and test with a known-good audio source. For Bluetooth, make sure the adapter is enabled, put the accessory into pairing mode, and remove an old pairing before trying again. For graphics or an external display, note whether the failure occurs at boot, after login, or only when connecting a second screen; that timing helps distinguish a display setting from a driver issue.

When a device remains unavailable, return to the exact model and release information. A distribution’s current hardware documentation is safer than a one-size-fits-all command or an unofficial driver bundle.

Handling software sources, sudo, and downloaded commands

Linux software can come from official repositories, project-maintained packages, application bundles, or commands copied from a website. These sources do not carry the same level of review or maintenance. Ubuntu’s command-line guidance recommends official distribution repositories as the safer default and warns that external repositories and commands run with sudo can make privileged system changes.

A safer installation decision

  1. Search the official software center or repository first.
  2. If the package is unavailable, open the application developer’s official download page and verify that the package supports your distribution and release.
  3. Read the installation instructions completely before copying a command.
  4. Check what files, repositories, or services the command will add.
  5. Use sudo only when you understand the operation and have verified the source.
  6. Keep a record of any repository or package you add so it can be removed or updated later.

A command that begins with sudo has permission to change system-wide files. It is not a password-free version of a normal application install, and it does not make an untrusted script safe. If an instruction asks you to disable security features, paste an opaque script into a terminal, or add an unrelated repository, stop and find a documented alternative.

Recognize repository-related failures

If an application worked until a repository change and then updates began failing, the repository may be wrong for your release or unavailable. Do not keep adding more sources to overcome the error. Disable or remove the problematic source using your distribution’s software settings, restore the official repositories, and update from the supported configuration. The exact menu names differ outside Ubuntu.

When the Ubuntu installer cannot see the disk or continue

Ubuntu’s current desktop installer warns that some computers use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), a storage configuration it does not support in the described installation scenario. If RST is enabled, the installer may not show the disk or may require you to disable or reconfigure the storage mode before continuing.

Stop before changing storage settings

Do not disable RST, switch controller modes, erase a disk, or delete a partition from a generic online instruction. Confirm the computer model, read the current Ubuntu installation instructions for that machine, and verify that your Windows files are backed up. A storage-mode change can affect the existing Windows installation if it is not performed according to the computer maker’s and Ubuntu’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the installer’s three broad choices

Installer path What it does Questions to answer first
Erase disk Uses the selected disk for Ubuntu and removes the existing installation and data on that disk. Is every needed file backed up, and have you selected the correct disk?
Install alongside Keeps another operating system and creates space for Ubuntu, resulting in a dual-boot setup. Is there enough free space, and are you prepared to choose an operating system at startup?
Manual partitioning Lets an experienced user specify partitions and mount points. Do you understand the existing layout and the consequences of each change?

The labels and exact screens can change between Ubuntu releases, but the data-retention trade-off remains. If you cannot explain which partition contains your files and what the selected option will do, cancel the installation and obtain distribution-specific help instead of guessing.

Use the live preview as a diagnostic step

Boot the installer’s live environment and test essential hardware before committing to an installation. If the disk is visible in the live environment but not in the installer, capture the exact installer message and investigate the storage configuration. If neither environment sees it, check firmware settings and the computer’s current storage mode using instructions for that model.

Choosing a transition strategy

There is no universally best answer between replacing Windows, installing Linux alongside it, or keeping Windows for a particular workflow. Compare the real constraints rather than choosing based only on the operating system’s name.

Choice Best fit when Main costs or risks
Linux only Your required applications have Linux versions or acceptable replacements, and your essential hardware works. Windows-only applications and services may need a new workflow; replacing the system requires a verified backup.
Linux alongside Windows You want to learn Linux while retaining a dependable Windows fallback. It needs disk space and partition care; you must manage two operating systems and select one at startup.
Windows retained separately A specific application, device, or organizational requirement remains Windows-only. You maintain two environments and must move files or services between them.

For applications, compare exact feature support, file compatibility with collaborators, setup and maintenance effort, and dependence on hardware or online services. For installation, compare data-retention needs, available disk space, storage-controller support, and your willingness to manage partitions. The installer’s “alongside” label is an option, not a guarantee that every machine or layout is suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when a first fix fails

Repeatedly changing drivers, repositories, and firmware settings makes diagnosis harder. Return to a known state and narrow the problem.

  1. Undo the most recent change if you can do so safely, such as removing a newly added repository or reconnecting the original cable.
  2. Reboot once after a clearly documented driver or system update; do not stack unrelated fixes before testing.
  3. Test the device in the live session or with another known-good cable, network, or accessory.
  4. Capture the distribution and release, computer and device model, exact error, and the steps already attempted.
  5. Consult the current documentation for that distribution and release, not an instruction written for a different version.
  6. If storage or personal data is involved, stop and restore from the backup rather than experimenting further.

When asking a community or support channel for help, include those details and describe what changed immediately before the failure. “Wi-Fi does not work” is difficult to diagnose; “the internal adapter is model X, Ubuntu release Y sees no wireless interface after installation, and it worked in the live session” gives helpers a useful starting point.

A concise checklist for your next troubleshooting session

  • Distribution and release recorded.
  • Computer and affected-device models recorded.
  • Complete error message copied.
  • Personal files backed up and a few backup files tested.
  • Essential hardware tested in a live session when practical.
  • Windows installer distinguished from a Linux package.
  • Official software repositories checked before external sources.
  • Every sudo command understood before execution.
  • Disk, erase, alongside, and manual options understood before selecting one.
  • RST or another storage-controller setting checked against current, device-specific Ubuntu guidance.

Most migration problems become manageable once the distribution, release, hardware model, and exact failure are known. Use the official software and hardware paths first, preserve your data before storage changes, and treat compatibility as a question about one application or device—not a promise that every Windows workflow will run unchanged on Linux.
