When an online learning platform will not open, will not accept your sign-in, or lets you in but blocks a class or assignment, troubleshoot in a strict order: verify the institution’s URL, use the account assigned to the course, check managed-password or single sign-on (SSO) rules, test the browser session, compare network connections, then investigate app, enrollment, permission, and service-status issues. This sequence prevents you from “fixing” a device problem when the real cause is an inactive school account, a wrong domain, a class restriction, or an outage.

The exact screens differ between Canvas, Google Classroom, Moodle, LearnPlatform, and locally configured systems. A school or university can use a custom address, its own identity provider, and its own help route. Treat the platform as an institution-managed service whenever the course was assigned by a school, employer, or training provider.

Start with a five-minute triage

Before changing settings, record what is actually failing. “The site is down” and “my assignment will not submit” require different fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the exact address supplied by the school, university, or learning organisation. Do not substitute a generic login page if the institution gave you a custom Canvas, Moodle, or portal URL.
  2. Identify the failing action. Is the page unreachable, is the password rejected, does sign-in loop, is the course missing, or does a submission fail after login?
  3. Try a private or incognito window. This quickly separates a damaged browser session from an account or service problem.
  4. Compare another already-available connection. A phone hotspot, home connection, or campus network can reveal filtering or routing differences. Do not buy equipment before this diagnostic comparison.
  5. Ask whether other learners are affected. Several people failing at the same time points toward an institutional or provider-side issue.

Keep the error text, the time it appeared, the platform address, device, browser or app version, and every step you tried. Those details make an escalation useful instead of starting the same troubleshooting cycle again.

“I can’t sign in”: verify the institution URL and account

Use the school’s sign-in route

Institutions commonly run separate Canvas or Moodle sites, and a username that works on one address may be rejected on another. Instructure’s “Logging into Canvas” guidance and the University of Cambridge Online Help both put the institution-specific URL near the beginning of their checks. Use the bookmark, email link, student portal, or course instructions supplied by your organisation. If you do not know the address, ask the institution’s IT department rather than guessing.

A correct-looking page can still be the wrong tenant or regional site. Check the domain and the organisation name on the sign-in page before entering credentials. If a bookmark suddenly redirects somewhere unfamiliar, close it and reach the platform through the institution’s official portal.

Check which identity the course expects

Google Classroom supports school, personal, and organisation accounts. Canvas and LearnPlatform installations can likewise depend on a particular managed identity. In a browser with several Google or Microsoft profiles, the account picker may silently select a personal or work account. Sign out of unrelated profiles, open a private window, and choose the school account explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Canvas, confirm both the username and password for that specific Canvas URL. An institution may have changed a managed username or password even though another campus service still accepts the old one. For LearnPlatform, a district may provide either SSO or manual credentials; selecting the wrong route can look like a bad password.

Look for account activation or enrollment status

A new learner may not yet have an activated account. Google’s student troubleshooting guidance notes that a school administrator may need to activate access. A valid password cannot overcome an account that has not been provisioned, a learner who is not enrolled, or a class that has reached an invitation limit. Ask the teacher or administrator to verify the account’s status and course membership.

“I forgot my password” or SSO keeps rejecting me

Use only the approved reset path

Select Forgot password only when the platform or institution permits self-service resets. Canvas guidance says a reset email can take up to 30 minutes. Check spam or quarantine folders, but do not repeatedly request resets during that window; multiple messages can make it unclear which link is current.

School-managed Google Workspace for Education accounts are different from personal accounts. Google’s student help directs learners to ask their teacher to have an administrator reset a managed password. A teacher may be unable to perform the reset directly, so allow time for the administrator’s process.

Recognise institution-controlled SSO failures

If several learners in the same district lose access at once, the problem may be the identity provider rather than an individual password. The LearnPlatform login guide identifies a possible SAML certificate issue when multiple district users cannot enter through SSO and directs users to support. Do not keep changing passwords or clearing cookies when the institution’s authentication certificate or account provisioning is the failing component.

When contacting support, state whether manual login works, whether SSO fails before or after account selection, and whether classmates see the same message. That distinction helps an administrator investigate the identity provider, certificate, group assignment, or platform configuration.

Fix login loops, blank pages, and broken formatting in the browser

Test a clean session first

Open the institution URL in a private or incognito window. If the page works there, an existing session, extension, cached script, or stale cookie is the likely difference. Disable extensions that alter cookies, scripts, privacy controls, or network routing one at a time; do not disable security software permanently.

Clear only the affected site data

Clear cookies and cached files for the learning-platform domain, then close and reopen the browser. A targeted deletion is safer than wiping every site because a full browser reset signs you out of banking, email, and other services. Keep your password and recovery method available before deleting cookies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After clearing site data, revisit the institution URL, select the correct account, and complete SSO again. If the same loop appears in a private window and on another supported browser, the cause is less likely to be local browser state.

Follow the platform’s current browser requirements

Update the browser to a version currently supported by the platform. Canvas’s login guidance specifically includes browser requirements among its checks. If your institution publishes a compatibility list, use that list rather than relying on a browser that merely opens ordinary websites. Out-of-date browsers can produce missing buttons, failed redirects, or unusable assignment controls even when the home page loads.

Check the network before blaming the platform

Confirm a stable connection

Open another ordinary website or service to establish whether the device is connected. Moodle’s app FAQ identifies interruptions or slow internet as possible contributors to access problems. A connection that repeatedly drops can interrupt SSO redirects, file uploads, and assignment submissions without producing a helpful error.

Compare networks you already have

Cambridge Online Help notes that public networks may block some websites and recommends trying another network. Compare the current connection with an already-available home, campus, library, or mobile connection. If the platform works on one network but not another, record the difference and ask the network or institution support team about filtering, firewall rules, captive portals, or DNS access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This comparison is diagnostic, not a recommendation to purchase a router, hotspot, VPN, or new computer. A network change cannot repair an inactive account, a missing course enrollment, or a provider outage.

When the mobile app cannot find the site

Moodle app: enter the institution’s site and use normal credentials

The Moodle app connects only to sites configured to allow mobile access and running a supported Moodle version. Enter the school’s Moodle site address in the app, then use the credentials you normally use for that site. A generic Moodle address will not discover a separately hosted institutional site.

Interpret Moodle app error messages

A message about site maintenance, an invalid token, or an unavailable web service usually indicates configuration or server-side work. Moodle’s app FAQ directs learners to contact the school or learning organisation for these errors. Reinstalling the app cannot enable a site that has disabled mobile services or is undergoing maintenance.

Separate app problems from account problems

Try the same institution URL in a supported mobile or desktop browser. If the browser works but the app fails, update the app, re-enter the site address carefully, and report the exact app message. If both fail, return to the URL, identity, password, and institution-support checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I can sign in but cannot join the class or submit work”

Class-code and invitation failures

In Google Classroom, a mistyped class code or the wrong signed-in account can prevent joining. Domain restrictions may allow only accounts from the school’s organisation, and a class invitation can reach its limit. Verify the code character by character, switch to the account the teacher specified, and ask the teacher or administrator to check domain policy or invitation status.

Permission and enrollment checks

A visible dashboard does not prove that you are enrolled in every course. Ask the teacher or learning-platform administrator to confirm your enrollment, role, section, and access dates. An administrator-controlled permission can block a course even when the rest of the platform works normally.

Assignment attachments and storage limits

Google’s teacher troubleshooting guidance notes that a teacher’s Google Drive storage being full can prevent students from turning in work. Attachment errors may also be caused by the file’s location or permission. Follow the platform’s alternate workflow, such as uploading to the Class Drive or using a separate copy when Google provides that option. Capture the file name, size, location, and exact error so the teacher can distinguish a storage problem from a class-permission problem.

Do not create duplicate submissions blindly. First check whether the original upload completed, whether the assignment shows a timestamp, and whether the teacher can see the file. A second copy can create confusion if the platform has already recorded the first attempt.

Check for a provider or school outage

If the platform returns server errors, times out for multiple people, or fails on different devices and networks, check the provider’s official status page and your institution’s notices. A status page is provider- and time-specific; it does not prove that every school instance is healthy.

For context, Instructure’s status page reported all listed systems operational and no incident on October 13, 2026. Its history also lists a Canvas Jobs slowdown on September 30, 2026 as resolved. Those are dated snapshots, not a guarantee about a particular institution or a later incident. Your school may have a separate maintenance window or configuration issue even when the provider’s broad status is green.

Save a screenshot or copy of the status message, note when the failure began, and retry only at reasonable intervals. Repeated password resets or account changes during an outage can create a second problem after service returns.

  • The exact platform URL, including the institution name or subdomain.
  • The account type used (school, personal, work, district SSO, or manual login), without sending your password.
  • The complete error text or a screenshot with personal information and recovery codes redacted.
  • Date and time, including time zone, when the failure occurred.
  • Device model, operating system, browser or app name, and whether private mode was tested.
  • Network comparison: which connection failed and which, if any, worked.
  • Whether other learners or teachers are affected.
  • The specific course, class code, assignment, file name, or submission attempt involved.
  • Steps already completed, such as URL verification, account switching, targeted cookie clearing, and an alternate-network test.

Never email a password, one-time code, recovery key, or full authentication token. Official support can investigate with the error, account identifier, and timestamps without receiving secrets.

Platform-specific quick paths

Canvas

  1. Open the institution’s Canvas URL, not a guessed generic address.
  2. Confirm the username and password assigned to that Canvas site.
  3. Try a private window and a currently supported browser.
  4. Clear cookies and cache for the Canvas domain if the session loops or the page is malformed.
  5. Use the institution-approved password reset; allow up to 30 minutes for a reset email.
  6. Contact campus IT if the address, credentials, enrollment, or managed identity is uncertain.

Google Classroom

  1. Select the school, personal, or organisation account required by the class.
  2. Verify the class code and ask the teacher to check invitation, domain, and enrollment restrictions.
  3. For a school-managed password, ask the teacher to involve an administrator.
  4. If submission attachments fail, check Drive availability and use the alternate Class Drive or separate-copy workflow offered by Google.

Moodle

  1. Enter the school’s Moodle site in the app or browser.
  2. Use the credentials that work for that site.
  3. Check whether the site permits mobile access and runs a supported Moodle version.
  4. For maintenance, invalid-token, or unavailable-web-service messages, contact the learning organisation.

LearnPlatform

  1. Use the district’s SSO route or manual login method exactly as instructed.
  2. In a multi-profile browser, select the district account rather than a personal or work profile.
  3. If many district users fail through SSO, report the issue to support; a SAML certificate problem may require an administrator’s repair.
  4. Clear site data only after recording the error and confirming you can complete any required reauthentication.

Prevent avoidable access failures

  • Bookmark the institution’s official URL and keep the student portal link available.
  • Maintain an approved recovery method and know whether password resets are self-service or administrator-controlled.
  • Keep the browser and mobile app updated according to the platform’s compatibility guidance.
  • Before a deadline, open the course, confirm enrollment, and test a small non-sensitive upload if the teacher permits it.
  • Keep a copy of important work locally or in the institution-approved storage location.
  • Know the teacher, help-desk, and Moodle or LMS administrator contact routes.
  • When using a shared or public computer, sign out completely and avoid saving passwords.

Most access failures become easier to resolve once the symptom is matched to the right owner: you control the URL selection, account choice, browser session, and connection test; the school controls activation, enrollment, permissions, managed credentials, and SSO; the platform provider controls service availability and some app or site configuration.
