Start by identifying the exact Remedy game, the symptom (low frame rate, repeated hitching, gradual slowdown, or a crash), your GPU and driver version, and where the problem occurs. Then check the title’s current requirements before changing settings. For Alan Wake 2, the official baseline includes SSD storage and a current graphics driver; its documented GPU-fault and Intel Arc crash fixes apply only to those specific situations, not to every Remedy game.

1. Identify the game and the exact failure

Remedy’s PC catalogue includes Alan Wake 2, Control, Alan Wake Remastered and Quantum Break. They do not share identical requirements, patches or support procedures. Remedy says its Northlight engine powers Control and Alan Wake 2, but an engine connection does not make a fix universal.

Write down the following before changing anything:

  • Game and version: include the edition (for example, a standard or upgraded release) and the launcher used.
  • Symptom: distinguish low average FPS, brief repeated hitching, a slowdown that appears after playing for a while, or a crash.
  • Hardware: CPU, GPU, system memory and whether the game is installed on an SSD or a hard disk.
  • Display and settings: resolution, display mode, ray-tracing state, upscaling mode and the quality preset.
  • Driver: record the exact graphics-driver version rather than only the vendor name.
  • Reproduction details: note the location, mission, menu action or combat event that reliably triggers the problem.
What you see Typical pattern First diagnostic move
Persistently low FPS The frame rate remains low in most scenes. Record resolution and quality settings, then test one demanding graphics option at a time.
Intermittent hitching Short pauses or uneven frame delivery occur while moving or entering a new area. Repeat the same route with identical settings and compare frame pacing after each single change.
Slowdown during a session Performance starts acceptably and worsens after extended play. Record how long the session ran and whether the slowdown follows a particular area or action.
Crash The game closes, freezes or reports a named error. Copy the exact error text; an error-specific procedure is more useful than a generic FPS tweak.

2. Check the title-specific baseline first

Alan Wake 2: verify SSD storage

The official Alan Wake 2 FAQ states, “Alan Wake 2 requires an SSD.” Confirm the game’s installation drive in your launcher or operating-system storage view. An SSD is a requirement, not a promise that replacing a healthy SSD will eliminate every hitch. Do not extend this requirement to Control, Alan Wake Remastered or Quantum Break without checking that game’s current official requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game is on a hard disk, move or reinstall it to an internal SSD using the launcher’s supported storage controls, then repeat the same route that produced the hitch. Keep every other setting unchanged during that comparison. If performance does not change, record that result instead of assuming the drive was irrelevant; the information still helps support separate storage-related symptoms from rendering or crash problems.

Alan Wake 2: use a current graphics driver

The same FAQ lists Nvidia driver 555.99 or newer. That number is the version floor stated on the FAQ, not a guarantee that it is the newest or best driver in 2026. Check the GPU vendor’s current driver page for a version that supports your exact card and operating system, and record the installed version when reporting a problem. Driver requirements can change as the game and drivers are updated.

Do not treat a driver number as a performance score. A newer package may address a crash without changing average FPS, while a settings change may improve FPS without addressing a driver fault. Note the date and version you installed so you can tell support precisely which software state produced the result.

Other Remedy games

The available official material does not establish one complete, current minimum-and-recommended specification table for every Remedy PC title. Use the requirements published for the exact game and edition you own. Avoid copying Alan Wake 2’s SSD or driver guidance into a Control or Quantum Break support request unless that title’s documentation says the same.

3. Lower demanding graphics settings methodically

If the problem is low or uneven performance rather than a named crash, make reversible changes and test them in the same scene. Change one setting, run the same route or camera movement, and note whether the frame rate and frame pacing improve. Changing a whole preset at once hides which setting mattered and makes it harder to restore an acceptable image.

Test ray tracing first when the GPU is the limit

NVIDIA describes full ray tracing as a demanding feature. Temporarily reduce ray-tracing quality or disable it, then repeat the same test. A large improvement suggests that the GPU workload is the constraint; no improvement points you toward another setting or a non-rendering cause. This is a diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed cure for every stutter.

Use the available upscaler

The Alan Wake 2 FAQ supports both DLSS and FSR2. Select the option your hardware supports and begin with a quality-oriented mode so the image remains usable. Compare the same scene at the same output resolution. Upscaling can reduce rendering cost, but it cannot correct a crash or a hitch caused by storage, a driver fault or another subsystem.

DLSS and FSR2 are alternatives to test, not features that must be enabled together. If both are offered on your configuration, test one, record the result, restore it, and then test the other. Keep the output resolution, ray-tracing state and route identical so image-quality differences do not get confused with a change in workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change only one variable per pass

  1. Record the original preset, resolution, ray-tracing state and upscaler mode.
  2. Choose one demanding option, such as ray tracing, and lower it.
  3. Restart the same test route and observe both average smoothness and short pauses.
  4. Restore the option if there is no meaningful change, then test the next setting.
  5. Keep the lowest visual change that solves the measured performance problem; do not leave unrelated settings reduced without evidence.
Adjustment Likely trade-off Best use Reversibility
Reduce or disable ray tracing Less physically detailed lighting and reflections. GPU-limited low FPS or uneven frame delivery. Immediate; restore the previous level from the graphics menu.
Enable or change DLSS/FSR2 Potentially softer image or reconstruction artifacts. Need to reduce rendering cost while retaining the chosen output resolution. Immediate; switch modes or turn it off.
Lower another GPU-heavy quality option Reduced detail, shadows or effects, depending on the option. Testing whether a specific workload causes the slowdown. Immediate; change one option at a time.
Leave settings unchanged No visual compromise, but no reduction in GPU load. When a setting change does not alter the symptom or when the issue is a crash. Not applicable.

Do not report a setting change as a universal “fix.” State the title, hardware and scene used for the comparison, because the same option can behave differently at another resolution or on another GPU.

4. Fix the documented Alan Wake 2 GPU-fault error

Epic’s support guidance applies to the specific Alan Wake 2 GPU-fault error. It is not a general prescription for ordinary stuttering, low FPS or every crash message.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Locate AlanWake2.exe in the game’s installation folder.
  3. Open the executable’s Windows properties and select the Compatibility tab.
  4. Enable Disable full-screen optimizations, apply the change and relaunch the game.
  5. Reproduce the same action that generated the GPU-fault message.
  6. If the error remains, open your GPU control-center application and disable optional background activities such as performance-boost features and game-optimization features. These labels vary by vendor and driver version.
  7. Test again with the same graphics settings. If the error changes or disappears, record which option was disabled when contacting support.

Return settings to their original state if the procedure has no effect or creates a new problem. Do not apply these compatibility changes to another Remedy title simply because its symptoms look similar.

5. Handle the Intel Arc battle-crash case

Intel documented a specific Alan Wake 2 crash that occurred after major battles on Intel Arc graphics. Intel’s support note says driver version 101.8425 resolved the described issue. Because that note is dated and later releases may supersede it, check Intel’s current driver information for your Arc model before installing anything. Include your installed version and the battle or sequence that triggers the crash in any report.

This is a vendor-specific known issue. It should not be presented as the correct driver for Nvidia, AMD or another Intel game, and it does not establish a general stutter fix.

6. Diagnose stutter without confusing it with low FPS

When the average frame rate is low

Start with the sequential graphics tests: ray tracing, then the supported upscaler, followed by another demanding option. Keep resolution and test location constant. If performance improves only after reducing GPU-heavy settings, the evidence supports a rendering-load limitation rather than a proof of a software defect.

When frames are uneven but the average looks acceptable

Use a repeatable route rather than a single number. Walk through the same doorway, rotate the camera in the same direction and repeat the action that causes the hitch. Note whether the pause happens at the same location every time. A repeatable location-specific hitch and a random hitch provide different evidence for support, even though both may be described as “stutter.”

When performance degrades over time

Log the elapsed play time, temperature or power-management observations available to you, and whether returning to a menu changes the behavior. Do not claim a cause from the timing alone. The useful outcome is a clear reproduction pattern that support can compare with known issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the game crashes

Stop changing unrelated graphics options and capture the exact message, crash point and driver version. A named GPU-fault error or a battle-specific Intel Arc crash should follow its documented branch above; an unnamed crash needs title-specific support rather than a generic stutter checklist.

7. Keep a reversible test record

A short log prevents circular troubleshooting and gives support actionable information. For each test, record:

  • Game, edition and installed version.
  • CPU, GPU, system memory and installation drive type.
  • Driver version and operating-system version.
  • Resolution, display mode, quality preset, ray tracing and DLSS/FSR2 mode.
  • The exact scene, mission or action, plus the test duration.
  • What changed, what stayed constant, and whether the result affected FPS, frame pacing or crashing.

Change one setting at a time and keep a copy of the original configuration. This makes every test reversible and avoids attributing an improvement to the wrong change.

8. Escalate through the correct support route

Remedy’s support hub directs Alan Wake 2 players to Epic Games Player Support. Follow the route for your exact title rather than submitting a generic “Remedy stutters” report. For another game, use that game’s current official support channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the information that shortens the back-and-forth:

  • The exact title, edition, launcher and game version.
  • CPU, GPU, memory, storage type and graphics-driver version.
  • Resolution, quality settings, ray tracing and upscaling mode.
  • The error text, if any, copied exactly.
  • Numbered reproduction steps, including the location or action.
  • Whether the issue is low FPS, hitching, gradual slowdown or a crash.
  • Which reversible tests you performed and the result of each.

9. Choose the right troubleshooting branch

Situation Use first Do not assume
Alan Wake 2 installed on a hard disk Move or reinstall it on an SSD, because the official FAQ requires SSD storage. That an SSD alone will cure every hitch.
Alan Wake 2 using an old driver Check the GPU vendor’s current driver; the FAQ lists Nvidia 555.99 or newer as its stated floor. That 555.99 is the current optimal release for every card.
Low or uneven FPS without a named error Test ray tracing, DLSS or FSR2 and other demanding settings one at a time. That a graphics change fixes a storage or crash problem.
GPU-fault message in Alan Wake 2 Disable full-screen optimizations for AlanWake2.exe; then try disabling optional GPU-control-center boosts or optimizations. That the same steps apply to every Remedy game or every crash.
Intel Arc crash after a major battle in Alan Wake 2 Check current Intel driver information; Intel identified 101.8425 as resolving the documented issue. That version 101.8425 is a universal or permanently current driver.
Any other title or symptom Use the exact game’s requirements and support route, with a complete reproduction log. That Alan Wake 2 requirements or fixes transfer automatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

10. Decide whether a hardware change is justified

An internal SSD is the only clear hardware requirement established for this group of checks: the official Alan Wake 2 FAQ says the game requires one. If your installation is already on a compliant SSD, buying another drive is not a demonstrated cure for stuttering. If it is on a hard disk, meeting the requirement is a sensible baseline test before judging graphics settings, but keep the result separate from proof that the SSD caused or solved every hitch.

No universal performance target or purchase recommendation applies across Remedy games. Match any hardware decision to the exact title, resolution, GPU and symptom, and use the current official requirements rather than a generic parts list.

11. Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid

  • Applying a title-specific fix everywhere: the GPU-fault executable setting and Intel Arc driver note are both tied to Alan Wake 2 scenarios.
  • Confusing a driver floor with a recommendation: Nvidia 555.99 is the version named by the FAQ, not a promise of the best release for every card.
  • Changing several variables together: a new preset, resolution and upscaler at once leaves no reliable explanation for an improvement.
  • Using one benchmark scene: a battle crash, doorway hitch and menu freeze require different reproduction steps.
  • Reporting only “it stutters”: include frame-rate behavior, timing, location, settings and the exact error text.
  • Leaving diagnostic compromises enabled: restore compatibility and GPU-control-center changes when they do not help or introduce a new issue.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

There is no reliable, title-wide statistic here for how often Remedy games stutter, nor a universal FPS expectation that applies across GPUs and resolutions. The documented guidance is strongest for Alan Wake 2: SSD storage, current relevant drivers, a named GPU-fault procedure and one Intel Arc crash note. For Control, Alan Wake Remastered and Quantum Break, treat the symptom log and the current title-specific requirements as the starting point instead of importing assumptions from another game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will moving Alan Wake 2 to an SSD eliminate stutter?

The official FAQ says Alan Wake 2 requires an SSD, so an SSD is the correct baseline. It is not a guarantee that every hitch will disappear. After moving the game, repeat the same route with unchanged settings and record whether frame pacing changes.

Is Nvidia driver 555.99 still the best driver for Alan Wake 2?

No such guarantee is established. The Alan Wake 2 FAQ lists Nvidia 555.99 or newer as its stated floor. Check the GPU vendor’s current driver page for your exact card and operating system, then record the version you test.

Should I disable full-screen optimizations whenever Remedy games stutter?

No. Epic’s procedure is for the specific Alan Wake 2 GPU-fault error. Apply it to AlanWake2.exe only when that error is present, and do not treat it as a universal fix for low FPS, ordinary hitching or another title’s crash.

Which is better for Alan Wake 2, DLSS or FSR2?

The FAQ supports both, but it does not establish one as universally superior. Use the option your hardware supports, test one at a time in the same scene, and compare smoothness and image quality at the same output resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should Intel Arc owners do about a crash after a major battle?

Intel documented that specific Alan Wake 2 issue and said driver 101.8425 resolved it. Because the note is dated, check Intel’s current driver information for your Arc model; newer packages may supersede that version.

How can I tell stutter from simply low FPS?

Low FPS stays poor across most scenes. Stutter appears as brief pauses or uneven delivery, often during movement or area transitions, even when the average looks acceptable. Repeat the same route and note whether the hitch occurs at the same location.

Do Alan Wake 2 fixes also apply to Control or Quantum Break?

Not automatically. Remedy titles have different requirements, versions and support routes. Use the exact game’s current documentation, and do not transfer Alan Wake 2’s SSD, GPU-fault or Intel Arc guidance without title-specific confirmation.

What information should I send to support?

Provide the exact title and edition, launcher and game version, CPU, GPU, memory, storage type, driver and operating-system versions, resolution and graphics settings, exact error text, numbered reproduction steps, and the result of each reversible test.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the exact game and symptom first. For Alan Wake 2, confirm SSD storage and a current relevant driver, test ray tracing and DLSS/FSR2 one change at a time, and reserve the full-screen-optimization and Intel Arc procedures for their documented errors. Keep a reversible log and use the title’s official support route when the issue persists.
