Fix the symptom you actually have: low FPS points to rendering or CPU limits, intermittent stutter points to frame pacing or driver/API conflicts, visual artifacts can indicate graphics strain or heat, crashes require file, driver, or stability checks, and high ping or rubberbanding is a network problem rather than a graphics setting. Use the game-specific sequence below, change one variable at a time, and retest the same scene.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Battle royale problems that look similar on screen often have different causes. Record when the problem starts, whether it affects one game or several, and the measurable signal that changes with it.
| What you see | Useful distinction | First signal to check |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS or sudden FPS drops | Frame rate stays low or falls during heavy scenes | In-game FPS, GPU/CPU load, and whether the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements |
| Stuttering or hitching | Short pauses or uneven frame delivery, sometimes while the FPS counter remains high | Frame-time consistency, recent driver or game changes, and whether a different graphics API behaves differently |
| Tearing | A horizontal break where two frames appear in one image | Whether V-Sync changes the display behavior |
| Artifacts | Persistent unusual colors, blocks, lines, or corrupted textures | GPU temperature, load, and whether the defect appears outside the game |
| Freezing or crashing | The game stops responding, closes, or fails to launch | Exact error text, crash timing, driver state, files, and hardware stability |
| Rubberbanding, high ping, or packet loss | Your character snaps back or inputs arrive late | In-game latency and packet-loss display, selected data center, and server status |
Use a measured troubleshooting order
- Check requirements. Compare the PC with the current game’s minimum and recommended specifications. If it is below minimum, settings changes cannot remove that hardware limitation. Epic says Fortnite’s later troubleshooting steps may not solve an under-spec system and that a different device or upgrade may be necessary.
- Check the game’s files and launcher. Verify or repair files, then clear the launcher cache when the game provides that option. Corrupt or incomplete files can cause missing assets, freezes, and launch failures.
- Update the graphics driver and operating system. Use the GPU manufacturer’s current driver and install pending Windows updates. Restart after installation before judging performance.
- Reduce background load. Close browsers, capture tools, overlays, launchers, and downloads that consume CPU, memory, GPU time, or bandwidth. Keep only the programs needed to test.
- Test one graphics or API change. Lower a demanding setting or switch the game’s documented DirectX option, restart if required, and replay the same scene. Do not change ten settings at once; you will not know which change mattered.
- Inspect heat, storage, and memory only when symptoms support it. Rising temperatures after a long session, memory pressure, drive errors, or loading hitches justify those checks. They do not make an SSD, RAM kit, or cleaning product a universal FPS cure.
- Escalate with evidence. Keep the date the issue began, exact error text, system information, and relevant logs or crash dumps. This is more useful to game support or a hardware technician than a general statement that the game is “laggy.”
Fix low FPS and sudden frame-rate drops
Start with requirements and the simple Fortnite checks
For Fortnite, Epic’s low-frame-rate guidance makes requirements the first decision point. If the PC does meet them, work through file verification, launcher-cache clearing, current video drivers, running the launcher as administrator, background-application checks, and drive checks. Reinstalling the launcher or game is a later step, not the first response. Epic also directs unresolved cases to support or the hardware manufacturer, depending on the fault.
Fortnite’s low-FPS guidance also calls out Windows power mode and GPU control-panel settings. On a laptop, a higher-performance power mode can improve sustained performance at the cost of battery life. Close unnecessary programs before testing so system resources are available to the game. Epic cautions that its changes may improve performance only slightly or not at all because results depend on the hardware:

"Remember that your experience in Fortnite is entirely dependent on what type of hardware you’re using, and the steps below may only improve your performance slightly or not change anything at all." — Epic Games Player Support, Troubleshooting low frame rate (FPS) in Fortnite.
Use Performance Mode as a test, not a promise
Epic’s Fortnite Performance Mode page provides illustrative laptop examples at 720p in a standard Squads match. They show what a particular configuration change did on those machines, not a guaranteed result for your PC.
| Example hardware | Illustrative result | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Intel i5-8265U, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620 | 24 to 61 FPS | 720p, Performance Mode, standard Squads match; Epic Games undated support example accessed 2026 |
| AMD A10-5745M APU, 6 GB RAM, Radeon HD 8610G | 18 to 45 FPS | 720p, Performance Mode, standard Squads match; Epic Games undated support example accessed 2026 |
Hardware, scene complexity, thermals, drivers, and game updates can produce very different results. Treat the mode as a reversible experiment and keep a record of the original setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm the correct GPU on a laptop
Systems with integrated and dedicated graphics can launch a game on the lower-power GPU. In Windows or the GPU vendor’s control panel, assign the game to the high-performance or dedicated GPU, then restart the game. This is especially important when the system has two adapters and the observed GPU load is unexpectedly low.

Fix stuttering and hitching when FPS looks high
Separate average FPS from frame pacing
A high average FPS does not guarantee smooth delivery. A brief stall caused by shader compilation, asset streaming, memory pressure, a driver conflict, or a graphics API transition can feel like a hitch even when the counter still reads 100 FPS. Compare the timing: constant low FPS suggests a sustained rendering limit; isolated pauses suggest frame pacing or loading work.
Try the game-specific DirectX diagnostic
EA Help says microstuttering can be related to how a game is optimized across DirectX versions or to graphics-driver conflicts. Its PC graphics troubleshooting guide recommends trying the other DirectX setting available for the game and restarting. Check the game’s patch notes before re-enabling the original API, because patches can change which option is stable. This is a diagnostic experiment for the affected game, not a universal Windows setting.
Check memory and storage only in the Fortnite legacy scenario
Epic says older PCs using Fortnite Performance Mode may benefit from an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM because the game can fit in memory more reliably, reducing overall hitches and stutters. Before spending money, check current Fortnite requirements, available memory under load, drive health and free space, and whether the motherboard supports the proposed RAM or SSD. That advice does not establish that every SSD or RAM upgrade fixes every game’s stutter.
Resolve tearing, artifacts, freezing, and overheating
Tearing and persistent artifacts
EA describes tearing as multiple frames appearing on one display and suggests toggling V-Sync on as a possible remedy. V-Sync can change latency and frame pacing, so compare it in the same scene rather than assuming it is always better.

- Removes dust from hard-to-reach places. Deliver precise blasts of air with the included plastic extension tube.
- Contains bitterant to help discourage inhalant abuse.
Artifacting means persistent unusual pixel colors or shapes. Check GPU temperature and load, then determine whether the defect appears in menus, another game, or the desktop. A single corrupted frame does not prove a failed GPU; artifacts that persist across applications or worsen under load justify hardware diagnosis.
Fortnite graphics faults and black screens
Epic’s Fortnite graphics guide recommends confirming requirements, lowering quality settings to test stability, keeping 3D Resolution at 100% in the described troubleshooting flow, and updating drivers. If DirectX 12 is associated with crashes, freezing, or black screens, try Fortnite’s Performance Mode. On a multi-GPU laptop, verify that the dedicated high-performance adapter is selected.
If Fortnite settings repeatedly revert, Epic’s procedure points to the game settings file and its read-only property. Check that file’s properties and follow the current support-page steps; client interfaces and file locations can change, so do not apply an old path blindly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Overheating after an extended session
When the game is stable at first and graphics faults begin only after prolonged play, heat becomes a credible suspect. Epic advises checking that vents are unobstructed, removing dust from fans and airflow areas, and using the computer in a well-ventilated space. Inspect before buying maintenance equipment: a compressed-air duster is relevant only when dust or obstruction is present, and the PC manufacturer’s cleaning instructions should be followed. Cleaning may prevent thermal throttling or shutdowns; it is not a guaranteed FPS increase.

Stop crashes and launch failures
Follow Fortnite’s ordered path
Epic’s Fortnite crash, error, and performance guide recommends this order:
- Search the exact error message, preserving its wording.
- Verify that the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements.
- Verify the game files.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Update graphics drivers.
- Try launching the launcher with administrator privileges.
- Only then consider reinstalling the launcher or game, checking security exclusions exactly as Epic documents, testing another drive, examining background applications, and checking for drive errors.
Do not interpret the security-exclusion step as a reason to disable antivirus generally. Apply exclusions only as directed by Epic and remove them if they are no longer needed.
Use PUBG’s stability checks
PUBG Support’s general crashing and performance guide recommends current Windows and graphics drivers. A clean driver or game installation can help when corruption or installation problems are suspected. It also advises removing hardware overclocks during troubleshooting. Returning components to manufacturer defaults isolates instability that can otherwise look like game corruption; this is not a claim that every overclock causes crashes.
Prepare useful escalation data
If crashes continue, record when they started, the complete description, exact error text, DxDiag information, and the relevant crash dump. PUBG Support specifically requests these details. Epic directs unresolved issues to its support team or the hardware manufacturer according to the problem category.

Fix high ping, packet loss, and rubberbanding
Know what the network measurements mean
Ping, or latency, is the round-trip time for game data between your platform and a data center, measured in milliseconds. Packet loss is the number or percentage of packets that fail to complete that trip. EA’s Apex Legends guidance says both can harm gameplay; rubberbanding is the visible snap-back caused by delayed or inconsistent updates, not normally a GPU setting.
| EA Apex Legends guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Under 50 ms | Described as particularly good |
| Under 100 ms | Described as running well |
| 50–150 ms | Named range in EA’s guidance; conditions within it can feel different |
| Above 100 ms | EA says lag may begin |
These are EA’s Apex Legends figures, not an industry-wide standard for every game, server, or route. A nearby server with congestion can behave differently from a more distant but cleaner route.
Use Apex Legends’ built-in checks first
EA’s Apex Legends ping, packet-loss, and lag guide recommends enabling Performance Display so FPS, latency, and packet loss are visible during a match. Select the nearest data center, then check server status and official reports if every data center looks poor. Only after those checks should you investigate the local connection.
Recommended Free Tools
EA lists shared Wi-Fi use, wireless links, background applications, and router location or obstruction as possible contributors. Stop cloud synchronization, game downloads, and video streams while testing. If possible, compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi in the same match, move the wireless device away from obstructions, and retest without changing graphics settings.
Compare causes by timing, scope, and evidence
| Comparison question | What the answer suggests | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Constant or intermittent? | Constant low FPS points to a sustained CPU/GPU or requirements limit; intermittent hitches point to frame pacing, loading, memory, or driver/API behavior | Replay the same route and watch FPS and frame-time behavior |
| One game or several? | One-game failures favor files, patches, APIs, or game settings; several games favor drivers, hardware, heat, or Windows | Run another installed game with comparable load |
| Which subsystem changes? | GPU/CPU load, storage and memory, temperature, or network each require different fixes | Record the relevant metric while reproducing the fault |
| When did it begin? | A driver, patch, hardware change, or accumulated heat can narrow the cause | Compare the start date with updates and hardware changes |
Change one factor, restart when the game requires it, and retest under matching conditions. Keep notes of the setting, scene, FPS, frame pacing, temperature, ping, packet loss, and result.
When an upgrade or repair is justified
Upgrade only after measurements identify a limit. An under-spec PC may require a different device or compatible hardware. An older Fortnite Performance Mode system with memory pressure or a slow drive is the narrow case in which Epic mentions at least 6 GB of RAM or an SSD as potentially helpful. Verify motherboard, interface, capacity, and current game requirements before purchase.
Cleaning is justified when inspection finds blocked vents or dust, especially if faults begin after extended play. Persistent artifacts across applications, repeated crashes after drivers and files are clean, drive errors, or instability that disappears at manufacturer defaults warrant a qualified repair technician or hardware-manufacturer support. The available support guidance does not establish a universal failure rate or a single upgrade that fixes all battle royale performance problems.
