Most P.T. launch failures are caused by using the wrong software path or an unsupported game-file format. First determine whether you are running the native P.T. for PC port, the separate shadPS4 PlayStation 4 emulator, or a fan-made recreation. Then apply only that project’s requirements: the native port needs an accepted dump of your own PS4 game files, while shadPS4 depends on its current emulator build and compatibility notes.
The checks below cover file format, operating system, Vulkan support, graphics options, controller input, the microphone-trigger sequence, macOS security prompts and emulator-specific compatibility limits.
Identify which P.T. version you are running
Do not treat every “P.T. on PC” installation as emulation. The current P.T. for PC project is a native PC port: its gameplay logic was rebuilt for PC and it reads content from your own PS4 game files at runtime. shadPS4 is a separate, early-development PS4 emulator. A fan remake is a different recreation with its own assets, code and requirements.

If you are unsure, look at the executable or launcher name before changing settings. A fix for the native port will not repair a shadPS4 compatibility problem, and neither will necessarily apply to a fan remake.

Fix the native P.T. for PC port first
Use the supported game-file form
The port’s documented reference is the United States release identified as CUSA01127. The installer accepts either a dump folder or a fake PKG made from that dump. It does not accept the encrypted store PKG downloaded for a PlayStation account.

Use a dump made from your own legitimately owned copy. The project repository and installer do not include the game data, so downloading an unverified “ready-to-run” package is not a supported solution and can introduce modified or incomplete files.
Install from a dump or fake PKG
- Prepare your own P.T. dump and verify that it corresponds to the supported US release,
CUSA01127, unless the project’s current documentation says otherwise. - Start the P.T. for PC installer and select the dump folder or the fake PKG created from that dump.
- Allow the installer to copy the required files, including
chunk1.psarc,texture.qarandpathid_list_ps4.bin. - Launch the installed port. If the installer rejects a store PKG, do not keep changing graphics settings; replace it with an accepted dump or fake PKG.
The maintainer reports that European and Japanese versions install, but has not personally seen those data. That makes the US CUSA01127 dump the least ambiguous starting point. A successful installation of another region is not the same as a project-verified compatibility guarantee.
Recognize the common file-format symptoms
- Installer says the package is encrypted or unusable: you selected a store PKG rather than a dump or fake PKG.
- Installation completes but the game reports missing content: confirm that the three required files were copied and that the selected folder is the actual dump root, not a parent folder containing it.
- The port starts and then fails while loading: recheck the release identifier and recreate the dump rather than substituting files from a different edition.
Why mixing regions or partial files causes confusing results
A folder that contains some files from one release and some from another can look complete while failing later in the boot process. Do not “repair” a dump by copying individual archives from an unrelated download. Start again from one consistent dump, select its actual root in the installer and let the installer copy the required files together. If you test a European or Japanese release, record the region and do not assume that a result seen on the US build applies to it.
Check operating-system and Vulkan requirements
Before tuning resolution or effects, verify the platform requirements documented by the port. The active GPU and driver must expose Vulkan 1.3. A system can have a modern-looking graphics card yet fail if the installed driver exposes an older Vulkan version or the game is using the wrong GPU.

Verify Vulkan before changing in-game options
- Check the operating system version and architecture against the table.
- Identify the GPU that the port is actually using, particularly on laptops with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Install the current driver for that GPU and confirm that it advertises Vulkan 1.3.
- Start with the default graphics profile. Only then enable optional effects one at a time.
If the application closes before showing a menu, a Vulkan or driver problem is more likely than an unsupported shadow setting. Update or select the correct driver first. If it launches but a particular option is unavailable, leave that option disabled and continue testing the baseline configuration.
Understand optional effects and upscalers
Optional ray-traced shadows, ambient occlusion and reflections require Vulkan ray queries. The port documents those features as unavailable on macOS. Optional upscalers also have individual platform and GPU constraints. Unsupported features are reportedly shown as greyed out in the settings screen; that is a compatibility signal, not a corrupted installation.
Do not buy a graphics card solely because one optional checkbox is grey. Disable the unsupported feature, use the supported renderer and only investigate hardware after confirming that the active driver and GPU meet the Vulkan 1.3 baseline.
Linux and Steam Deck details
Linux support targets x86-64 systems with glibc 2.38 or newer, and the project includes SteamOS in that target. On a Steam Deck, the documented process is to install from Desktop Mode and add pt as a non-Steam game. If the game works from Desktop Mode but not from Gaming Mode, repeat the launcher path and compatibility-tool settings exactly as the project’s current Steam Deck instructions specify.

The macOS application is not Developer ID signed according to the README. macOS may therefore block the first launch until you approve it under System Settings > Privacy & Security. Use the project’s current release instructions for the exact approval prompt; do not bypass unrelated security controls.
The README also notes that the Intel build had not yet been run on an Intel Mac when that version was written. Treat Intel support as release-sensitive: check the current release notes before diagnosing an Intel-specific crash as a game-file problem.
Fix controller, keyboard and voice-trigger problems
Controller and keyboard mapping
The native port states that any gamepad can be used as the PS4-style controller. Keyboard and mouse controls are also available. Button prompts follow the most recently used input type, so prompts can change after you touch the keyboard or a controller. That behavior is expected and does not indicate that the gamepad disconnected.

- If no controller input is detected, connect the gamepad before launching the port, then test a keyboard key to determine whether the game itself is responding.
- If prompts keep switching, avoid pressing both input devices while checking a button assignment.
- If a particular pad is not recognized, test the keyboard/mouse controls first. The project’s “any gamepad” statement does not guarantee that every operating-system driver exposes every feature identically.
Trigger the voice section without a microphone
A physical microphone is not required for the voice-trigger portion of the native port. Open PC settings > Sound and enable “Assign J / L2 + R2 for the microphone trigger”.

Jon the keyboard, or press both controller triggers (L2 and R2) together.
If the sequence does nothing, make sure the setting is enabled and that you are pressing the key or both triggers during the listening window. Buying a microphone is not a general fix for this port.
Use a separate troubleshooting path for shadPS4
shadPS4 describes itself as an early-development PS4 emulator. Its behavior can change between builds, so use the current Quickstart and compatibility list supplied by the project rather than copying settings from an old video or forum post.
Do not assume a P.T.-specific compatibility result
The available project material does not establish a current, verified P.T.-specific compatibility rating. That means you should not treat a successful result for another PS4 title, or an older shadPS4 build, as proof that P.T. will boot. Check the current compatibility entry for your exact build and record the result you observe.
Collect the details needed for an emulator diagnosis
- Exact shadPS4 build or release number
- Operating-system version and CPU/GPU model
- Whether the emulator reaches a menu, shows a black screen, crashes or has missing graphics
- Whether the problem occurs with a controller, keyboard or both
Use those details when consulting the compatibility list or reporting an issue. “P.T. does not work” is not enough to distinguish an emulator regression from a graphics-driver or input problem.

The consulted shadPS4 repository identifies macOS 15.4 as a minimum for the project version it documented and flags serious GPU bugs on Intel Macs. These are release-specific statements, not permanent emulator requirements. Verify the current shadPS4 documentation before acting on them, because a later build may change the minimum version or the affected hardware.
shadPS4 also documents general controller and keyboard mappings. Apply those mappings through the emulator’s current interface, not through the native port’s PC Sound setting; the two programs do not share configuration files or input logic.

Read the symptom before changing several variables

Change one category at a time. Replacing files, updating drivers and switching input devices simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change helped. Keep the original error text and the point in the launch sequence where it appears.
Do not mix instructions from fan remakes
A fan remake can look similar while using entirely different assets, code and engine technology. Its installer may not accept a PS4 dump, and its controller or microphone options may have different names. If the launcher does not identify itself as P.T. for PC or shadPS4, stop and read that remake’s own requirements before copying files or changing emulator settings.
Never assume that a remake’s performance, graphics options or save files can be transferred to the native port. They are separate projects.
A symptom-first decision tree
- Identify the executable. Confirm native port, shadPS4 or a fan remake.
- If it is the native port, validate the source data. Use your own dump or fake PKG, preferably the documented US
CUSA01127release. Reject a store PKG. - Validate the platform. Check the operating system, architecture, active GPU and Vulkan 1.3 support.
- Reduce variables. Start with default graphics settings and disable optional effects that are greyed out or unavailable.
- Test input separately. Try keyboard/mouse, then the gamepad. For the voice section, enable the J or L2+R2 trigger assignment.
- If it is shadPS4, stop applying native-port fixes. Check the current Quickstart and compatibility entry for the exact emulator build.
- Write down the exact symptom. Note the first error message, where the launch stops and which input device was active. Use that information in the project’s current support or issue-tracking channel.
What not to change or purchase first
The documented fixes are configuration and compatibility checks, not general shopping recommendations. The native port supports keyboard/mouse input and a broad range of gamepads, and it provides a microphone-trigger workaround. The available material does not establish that buying a particular controller, microphone or GPU solves common failures.
Likewise, the game files are a prerequisite for the native port, but the documentation directs players to use their own copy and does not support a retail purchase recommendation for troubleshooting. Do not replace missing data with files from an unknown third party.
Keep the instructions current
The native port README can change with releases, and shadPS4 compatibility is especially volatile while the emulator remains in early development. Recheck the current project documentation after an update, when changing operating systems or drivers, or when a previously working build begins failing. Keep the emulator build, game route and exact symptom together in your notes so that a compatibility change can be distinguished from a local configuration error.

Can I use a PlayStation Store PKG with the native port?
No. The README says a store PKG remains encrypted for the console account that owns it. Use a dump folder or a fake PKG made from your own dump.
Which P.T. release is the documented reference?
The project’s tested reference is the US release CUSA01127. European and Japanese versions are reported to install, but they are not presented as personally verified by the maintainer.
What files should the installer copy?
