Fix NieR:Automata PC problems by first checking your game version and mods, then matching the troubleshooting step to the symptom. Steam lists minimum hardware requirements, XInput-only gamepad support, and a keyboard-input caveat; its specifications are a baseline, not a guarantee of smooth performance. Try reversible checks before installing community tools.
Start with the game version and installation
Before changing settings, note where you installed the game, whether its official update is installed, and whether you added mods, plugins, or other third-party files. Version matters: a Steam community guide says many fixes that once motivated players to use FAR or Special K were included in the July 15, 2021 update. If you use a modified installation, temporarily disable or remove the added files and test the unmodified game. Keep a note of what you changed so you can restore it. Do not copy old FAR files into an updated installation based solely on an older guide; the FAR repository directs users with updated copies to current instructions on the official Special K wiki.

Steam’s published requirements give you a compatibility reference, not a promise that every system at the minimum will run well. The listing retrieved in 2026 names these specifications:

Work through crashes and falling frame rates

If the game crashes on startup or during play
- Record when it fails. Note whether it closes immediately, crashes while loading, or fails after you have been playing. This helps separate launch trouble from an in-game failure.
- Test without modifications. Disable mods and third-party plugins, then launch the game again. If it starts, restore additions one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Verify the installation in your storefront. Use its built-in file verification option to check for damaged or missing game files. The exact menu labels differ between storefronts.
- Isolate overlays and injectors. Close overlays or other tools that hook into the game, testing one at a time. If a change makes no difference, restore it before moving on.
- Compare your hardware with Steam’s requirements. Check the CPU, graphics card, memory, and available storage against the table above.
If frame rate declines or the game stutters
First test the game without mods, overlays, or injectors. If performance remains poor, lower the resolution or graphics settings as a reversible diagnostic and see whether the symptom changes. A change in results can help narrow the problem, but no single setting is established as a universal cure. Steam’s recommendation is 1080p; its listing does not officially support 4K.

Steam’s listing specifies XInput-only gamepad support and warns that input methods other than Microsoft IME (MS-IME) may not work correctly. Use those notes to guide input troubleshooting rather than changing graphics settings.

Consider it only after you have tested the unmodified game and identified a specific feature you want to address. Read the current instructions for your game version before installing anything. The FAR repository points users of updated copies to the official Special K wiki for installation directions; do not rely on an unverified version number or assume an older FAR guide applies to your build.
For advanced tuning, check the in-game settings first. The Steam Community guide notes uncertainty about how Special K’s quality levels correspond to the game’s quality presets, so do not assume a mod preset maps directly to an in-game option. Change one setting at a time and undo it if the result worsens.
