Most LineageOS installation failures are not signs of a permanently bricked phone. They usually come from using instructions for the wrong model or variant, an undetected fastboot connection, an incompatible recovery, a device-specific partition requirement, or an add-on installed in the wrong order. Start with the current LineageOS Wiki page for your exact device and variant, then diagnose the stage that is actually failing. Do not copy button combinations, recovery images, wipe commands, or partition instructions from another phone.
First, identify the exact installation path
LineageOS does not have one universal installation procedure. The required recovery, bootloader commands, firmware version, partition layout, button sequence, add-on architecture, and upgrade rules vary by device. The guides for G, earth, hayabusa, z2_plus, tsubasa, clark, and lisa illustrate those differences; they are examples, not interchangeable recipes.
Confirm the model and variant
- Read the model name and codename in the phone’s settings, bootloader screen, or original documentation.
- Open the LineageOS device page for that exact codename and hardware variant. A similarly named carrier or regional model may require different firmware or may not be supported.
- Check whether you are performing a clean install, a supported in-place upgrade, or a downgrade. These are different procedures, and a device may support one while rejecting another.
- Note every prerequisite on the page, including firmware, repartitioning, recovery version, and required computer tools.
Back up before any destructive step
Formatting data or performing a factory reset removes encryption and deletes files from internal storage. The clean-install instructions cited for G and earth explicitly warn about that loss; one also formats a cache partition when present. A backup is not optional if the files on the phone matter. Copy photos, documents, authenticator data, and any application data you cannot recreate to another device before unlocking, formatting, or repartitioning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep a record of what you changed
Write down the exact LineageOS build, recovery image, firmware version, computer operating system, and command that produced an error. This prevents repeated destructive attempts and gives a support forum enough information to distinguish a connection problem from a mismatched image.

When the computer cannot see the phone in fastboot
If fastboot devices returns no output, start with the connection and mode. An empty result does not establish that the phone is bricked.
Check the mode before changing software
- Power the phone into the fastboot or bootloader mode specified by its own LineageOS page. The key combination and menu wording differ by model.
- Leave the bootloader screen visible and connect the phone directly to the computer.
- Run
fastboot devices. A device identifier indicates that the host can communicate; no output means the host has not established fastboot communication. - Use the device guide’s exact command syntax. Do not substitute an Android Debug Bridge command while the phone is in fastboot, or a fastboot command while it is in recovery.
Resolve drivers and permissions
The G and clark installation guides specifically call out host setup. On Windows, install or repair the correct bootloader USB driver and verify the device in Device Manager while it is in fastboot. On Linux and macOS, check the permissions rules and whether your account is allowed to access the USB device. Reconnect after changing a driver or permission rule, then run the command again.
Test the physical USB path
- Try a known-good data cable, not a charge-only cable. The correct connector and USB standard depend on the phone and computer ports.
- Try a different USB port. The G guide suggests a USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub when fastboot is missing or commands hang.
- If a command freezes, move the cable to another port or use a hub. Some devices have unreliable USB support while in bootloader mode.
- Connect directly rather than through a dock whose USB pass-through may not expose bootloader devices.
A cable or hub can address a marginal USB path; it cannot repair an incompatible recovery, wrong partition layout, or failed add-on sequence.

When recovery is missing, overwritten, or rejected
Use only the recovery image linked from the exact LineageOS device page. The LineageOS Wiki warns in the G guide: “Important: Other recoveries may not work for installation or updates. We strongly recommend to use the one linked above!” That warning applies to recovery compatibility, not merely to convenience.

Install the image named by the guide
Recovery targets and flashing commands vary. One phone may use a dedicated recovery partition; another may boot a recovery image temporarily; another may require a vendor-specific command. Follow the target, filename, and verification steps on your page exactly. Never infer a partition name from a different codename.
Prevent the stock system from replacing recovery
Some device guides warn that rebooting into the existing operating system immediately after flashing can overwrite the newly installed recovery. When the guide tells you to boot directly into recovery, use its specified key sequence or command instead of allowing a normal system boot. If recovery has already been replaced, return to fastboot and repeat the exact recovery procedure for that model.
Do not mix recovery generations
A recovery built for another Android base, a different storage layout, or another device variant may boot but fail to decrypt data, accept a package, or apply an update. A successful flash therefore does not prove compatibility. Replace it with the image currently linked by the model’s LineageOS page and restart the documented sequence.
When installation fails after formatting or wiping
Formatting is a clean-install operation, not a generic cure for every error. The G and earth guides require a data format or factory reset in their clean-install flows, while other devices have different wipe requirements. The tsubasa guide, for example, makes repartitioning mandatory. Applying any of those steps to an unrelated phone can remove data or leave the partition layout unusable.

Understand what a format does
- It removes the encryption metadata used to protect the data partition.
- It deletes files stored on internal storage, including media and files that were not backed up.
- On a guide that explicitly calls for it, it may also format a cache partition.
- It does not automatically install the correct firmware, recovery, or operating system afterward.
Use a safe clean-install sequence
- Back up internal storage and verify that the backup can be opened elsewhere.
- Read the current clean-install page for your codename from beginning to end before executing a command.
- Confirm required firmware and, if specified, complete the model’s repartition step before wiping.
- Perform the exact factory-reset or format-data action named by that guide. Do not add extra partition wipes because another tutorial used them.
- Install the LineageOS package and any required add-on in the order the page gives, then reboot only when the guide permits it.
If the install still fails
Record the recovery’s on-screen error, the package filename, and the preceding operation. A package rejected after a format may indicate a wrong build, wrong architecture, an incomplete download, or an unsupported recovery—not a need to wipe again. Repeating a format without identifying the cause only creates additional data loss.
When adb sideload appears to stop at 47%
On several official guides, including G, hayabusa, and z2_plus, a host-side sideload can stop around 47% and print a message such as adb: failed to read command: Success, No error, or Undefined error: 0. The guides explain that this message can occur even when the package was transferred successfully. The percentage is a property of the host’s progress display, not a universal success threshold.
What to check instead
- Wait for the recovery screen to finish processing the package.
- Read the recovery result on the phone. Look for the success or failure message described by your device guide.
- Check whether the guide instructs you to install another package, such as an add-on, before rebooting.
- Continue with the next documented step only when recovery reports success.
Do not interrupt, retry, or reboot solely because the computer printed one of those failed-read messages. If recovery itself reports an error, capture that exact text and verify the build, architecture, storage state, and recovery version before trying again.
Installing Google Apps and other optional packages
Add-ons have a strict timing rule: install them in the sequence required by the device guide and before the first system boot. The clean-install guidance cited here requires a Google Apps package that matches the device’s specified architecture. An apparently valid package for another architecture can fail installation or leave the system without expected services.

For a new installation
- Read the add-on section on your device page and confirm the package architecture.
- Sideload or flash LineageOS as directed.
- Without booting the new system, install the optional package using the recovery procedure on that page.
- Reboot only after every required package has completed successfully.
For an upgrade that already has Google Apps
The cited upgrade guides require an updated Google Apps package before the first boot of the upgraded system. Follow the page’s package and order instructions; do not assume the older package will remain compatible simply because the operating system upgrade completed.
Adding Google Apps to a system that never had them
In the cited guidance, adding Google Apps where none were previously installed requires a data wipe or factory reset. That is destructive and should be treated as a separate clean-install-like operation: back up first, then follow the exact model instructions.
Signature-verification prompts
Some guides explain that recovery may warn because optional packages are not signed with LineageOS’s official key. The prompt can be expected for that package. Follow the on-screen action specified by the guide and the recovery version you are using; do not generalize the wording of one recovery to every device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When the phone bootloops after installation or upgrade
There is no universal bootloop fix established by the cited device guides. A loop can follow an incompatible recovery, an incorrect firmware or partition state, a skipped wipe where one was required, or an add-on installed at the wrong time. Some recoveries also offer optional applications or services that the guides warn may cause bootloops or allow access to or corruption of data; opt out when the device guide tells you to.

Use a non-destructive decision path
- Ask whether the phone reached the new system at least once. If it never did, review the install sequence before changing user data.
- Return to recovery and verify the installed build, recovery identity, and the result of the last package operation.
- Check whether the bootloop began immediately after an optional package, recovery-provided service, firmware change, or version upgrade.
- Compare every step with the current guide for the exact codename, including required firmware and partition preparation.
- Only perform a factory reset or format when that guide explicitly requires it for the identified situation and you have a backup.
Do not flash generic partitions or wipe data merely because another phone’s bootloop tutorial recommended it. If every documented step matches and the device still loops, use the support channel linked from the exact device page with the build, recovery, and error details you recorded.
When the first boot seems unusually slow
One device guide says the first boot usually takes no longer than 15 minutes, depending on the device; another presents the same kind of device-specific expectation. This is not a universal LineageOS timeout. Consult your model’s current page before deciding that a boot is stuck, and avoid repeated forced reboots based only on a timing expectation from another phone.
While waiting
- Keep the phone connected to reliable power.
- Do not press key combinations repeatedly while the system is completing its first boot.
- If the guide supplies a model-specific maximum or recovery check, use that instruction rather than a generic timer.
Upgrading versus downgrading
In-place transitions are device- and version-dependent. The hayabusa guide says a downgrade should use that device’s first-install instructions. The lisa guide says its updater application does not support upgrades between LineageOS versions. Therefore, an update notification or a working updater does not prove that every version transition is supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before an upgrade
- Open the current upgrade page for the exact device and read its requirements.
- Back up data even when the page describes the operation as non-destructive.
- Check whether a firmware change, recovery update, or updated Google Apps package is required before boot.
- Confirm that the target build is intended for the same device variant.
Before a downgrade
Treat the transition as a first installation unless the exact device guide states otherwise. Follow its wipe, firmware, and recovery instructions, and assume that data may be lost if the page requires a factory reset.
Choose the right procedure instead of the most aggressive one
| Your situation | Use this evidence | Data risk | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| New phone with no LineageOS installation | Exact device’s first-install guide | May include an unlock or format; back up anything already stored | Another model’s recovery or partition map |
| Existing supported LineageOS version | Exact device’s upgrade guide | Varies; an updated add-on may be required before boot | Every version transition is supported by the updater |
| Moving to an older version | Exact device’s first-install instructions, as hayabusa specifies | May require a wipe | A normal over-the-air-style downgrade |
| Fastboot absent on the computer | Host, mode, driver, permission, cable, and port checks | None from these checks | That the phone is bricked |
| Sideload host message near 47% | Recovery’s result and the device guide | None if you do not interrupt a successful operation | That the transfer failed solely because of the percentage |
| Bootloop after an add-on or upgrade | Exact sequence, package compatibility, and recovery warnings | Wiping may be destructive | A generic partition flash or data wipe is safe |
A concise recovery checklist
- Exact codename and hardware variant confirmed.
- Current LineageOS device page open, with its recovery, firmware, partition, and button instructions.
- Verified backup completed before any format, factory reset, or repartition.
- Fastboot mode confirmed on the phone, then tested with
fastboot devices. - Windows driver or Linux/macOS permission checked when no device appears.
- Different cable and port tested; USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub considered where the device guide suggests it.
- Recovery image taken from the exact device page, with no normal-OS reboot that could overwrite it.
- Recovery result read on the phone before reacting to a host-side adb message.
- Optional package architecture and pre-first-boot order verified.
- Bootloop diagnosis tied to a specific changed step, not to a generic internet fix.
When to stop and ask for device-specific help
Stop experimenting when the next proposed action would erase data, alter partitions, or flash an image that is not linked by your device’s current guide. Provide the support channel with the exact codename, variant, LineageOS build, recovery version, host operating system, command used, recovery error, and whether the phone is still reachable in fastboot or recovery. Device support and instructions can change; the generated LineageOS Wiki pages reviewed for these procedures include content dated June 24, 2025, so check the live page immediately before starting or retrying an installation.
