Use this order before changing advanced settings
Start with changes that are reversible and least likely to create a second problem. Record what happens after each change so you know which variable mattered.
- Note the exact symptom: a crash at launch, a crash during play, no controller detection, missing buttons, or input lost only when the game is unfocused.
- Write down the edition and launcher you use, such as a Steam installation, because the available controller menus can differ.
- Keep the PC online while checking for the game’s current update.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC when possible, and leave the keyboard and mouse available.
- Do not change several Steam layouts, drivers, and USB devices at once. Test one change, then launch the game again.
- If a community workaround makes the behavior worse, undo that change before trying another.

3. Restart the PC
Restart Windows after the driver update rather than merely closing and reopening the game. A restart reloads the display driver and clears processes that may have remained from the previous session. After Windows comes back, test the same scene or launch point that previously failed. If the crash no longer occurs, keep the configuration unchanged long enough to confirm the result instead of immediately adding more tweaks.
4. Reinstall the game if the crash persists
If the game still crashes after the update and restart, reinstall it. Allow the launcher to complete the installation and any subsequent patch before testing. Do not interrupt the installation to launch an earlier executable or begin a second repair operation.
If you keep local save data or custom configuration files, back them up according to the storage location used by your edition before uninstalling; do not assume every file is cloud-synchronized. A backup is a precaution, not a claim that every edition stores saves in the same place. After reinstalling, test the clean installation before restoring optional files or remapping tools.
5. Escalate with system reports
When the crash continues after a reinstall, contact Square Enix support instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Include an MSInfo report and a DxDiag report so support can see the Windows configuration, installed hardware, drivers, and recent system information.

- Describe when the crash occurs, which edition and launcher you use, and which of the preceding steps you completed.
Useful details include whether the failure is before the main menu or during play, whether it began after an update, and whether it happens every time or intermittently. Attach the reports in the format requested by support rather than pasting an incomplete excerpt. The reports are intended to give support a reproducible system snapshot; they do not guarantee that support can identify a cause from one log.
The support pages do not identify one universal root cause and do not claim that a specific frame cap, overlay, GPU-selection change, or graphics preset is an official Kingdom Hearts crash fix. Controller troubleshooting starts with the symptom

When the controller does not work while the game is in the background
Square Enix directs Steam users to enable the controller option that allows the controller to be used for PC controls through Desktop Layout. Steam’s wording and screen arrangement can change between client versions, but the route is:

- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Open the controller’s Desktop Layout or equivalent desktop-control configuration.
- Select the controller that is connected and enable the setting that permits it to control PC functions through Desktop Layout.
- Apply the change, return to Kingdom Hearts, and test the same background action that failed before.
This setting is not a general guarantee of controller support. It addresses the case where Steam is not passing desktop-level controller input while the game is unfocused. If a controller works over USB but not wirelessly, troubleshoot pairing, the wireless adapter, and its driver separately. If neither connection works, stay focused on the Windows device and Steam configuration rather than buying replacement hardware immediately.
Steam Input and other remapping layers can translate one physical controller into a different virtual device. That translation can be helpful, but duplicate physical and virtual entries can also produce missing or doubled buttons. Community workarounds: useful leads, not guarantees
Players have reported different results from changing Steam Input configurations and removing conflicting or duplicate input devices. Should you replace the controller?
Usually, no—not as the first troubleshooting step.
