Most JRPG problems on PC can be narrowed down without immediately reinstalling Windows or buying new hardware. For crashes and black screens, update the game and graphics driver, restart the computer, then verify the installation when using Steam. For low FPS or stutter, check requirements, close background programs, update drivers, and lower demanding settings one at a time. For controller failures, identify the game’s supported input standard and storefront version, isolate the device, and test it on another system.
The correct fix depends on the game, edition, launcher, hardware, driver version, and connected peripherals. The steps below use guidance from Steam Support and Square Enix support, but game-specific instructions take priority. Work methodically: change one thing, repeat the same test, and record what happened.
Start with a quick diagnosis
Match the symptom to the first diagnostic path instead of changing several variables at once. A crash at launch has a different likely cause from a game that reaches a crowded town and then stutters. Likewise, a controller that is invisible to Windows needs a different test from one that works in menus but sends the wrong buttons.

Fix crashes, launch failures, and black screens
Complete the basic software checks
- Install any pending update for the JRPG and its launcher.
- Restart Windows. This clears processes and driver states that can survive while a game is closed.
- Install the current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. Update the CPU-platform and audio drivers too when the game’s support page calls for them.
- Launch the game again before changing advanced settings. A single restart or driver update may resolve a temporary failure.
Square Enix’s general PC-crash guidance recommends these basic checks and says to reinstall only if the problem continues. Reinstallation is slower and can remove local settings, so treat it as a later step rather than the default response. If you use mods, overlays, or a custom launcher, note whether the crash began after adding or updating one; do not change several of them while testing.
Verify a Steam installation
Use Steam’s file-verification command when the game crashes, refuses to start, or displays a black screen and the installation came from Steam. Open your Steam library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to compare the local installation with its server copy, then start the game again.
Verification replaces missing or damaged files; it does not update an old graphics driver, fix unsupported hardware, or correct every configuration problem. Let the process finish before launching the game, and restart Steam if it reports an interruption. If Steam reports that files were reacquired and the crash disappears, avoid deleting those files manually in the future. If verification completes without changing anything, move to driver, display-mode, peripheral, or support diagnostics rather than running verification repeatedly.

A game-specific Square Enix FAQ for FINAL FANTASY IX lists switching between windowed and fullscreen modes and reducing screen resolution as possible remedies. These instructions are specific support advice, not a universal JRPG fix. If you can reach the game’s launcher or configuration menu, change one display option, apply it, and test before changing another.
A black screen can still include audio or respond to keyboard input. Give the game a moment, then try the documented windowed or fullscreen toggle rather than force-closing it repeatedly. If the display returns in windowed mode, record that result and test a different resolution or fullscreen setting individually. Revert to the original setting if the change makes the problem worse.
Temporarily disconnecting peripherals and reinstalling the game also appear in that FAQ. Disconnect only nonessential devices and reconnect them one at a time. Device alterations can introduce new problems, so record the original connection and setting before experimenting. Do not remove a keyboard or other device needed to navigate the launcher.
Collect useful diagnostics before contacting support
If the crash remains after updates, a restart, and file verification, contact the publisher’s support channel for the specific game and edition. Square Enix asks PC players to include MSInfo and DxDiag files with a crash report. These reports identify Windows, driver, hardware, and installed-software details that a description such as “it crashes on startup” cannot provide.

- State the exact game edition and storefront, such as Steam or a Windows 10/11 release.
- Describe when the failure occurs: launch, loading screen, menu, cutscene, or during play.
- List changes made immediately before it started, such as a driver update, mod, peripheral, or display change.
- Attach the requested diagnostic reports and any error text exactly as displayed.
- Explain which tests you completed, including whether Steam verification found and replaced files.
Support can give different instructions for different releases of the same title. Follow the edition-specific article instead of applying a fix intended for another launcher or an older port.
Improve low FPS, slowdowns, and stutter
Check requirements without treating them as a performance promise
Compare your processor, graphics adapter, memory, operating system, and storage configuration with the game’s published minimum and recommended requirements. Steam notes that requirements do not guarantee a particular frame rate: two computers that meet the same specification can perform differently because of drivers, cooling, background software, memory configuration, and game settings.
Record whether the problem is consistently low FPS, brief hitches, or a sudden slowdown after a long session. A low average frame rate usually indicates that the game is rendering more than the system can handle. Short pauses can instead coincide with loading, memory pressure, a background task, or a driver event. The distinction helps you choose a useful test.
Integrated graphics generally have less rendering capacity than a dedicated GPU. Steam’s general advice for integrated-graphics systems includes reducing shader detail and trying windowed mode, but those changes are not guaranteed for every JRPG. Follow the individual game’s requirements and support instructions first. If the game lists a dedicated GPU requirement, lowering a setting may not make an unsupported configuration reliable.
Free resources before changing graphics quality
- Close browsers, launchers, recording tools, overlays, and other applications you do not need while playing.
- Open Windows Task Manager and check whether memory is nearly full. Steam explains that insufficient RAM can force data to disk, producing noticeable slowdowns and FPS drops.
- Stop unnecessary background tasks, but do not terminate unknown Windows services or security software blindly.
- Restart the game after closing heavy applications so it can allocate memory cleanly.
Do not assume that a visible overlay is harmless. Capture, chat, monitoring, and launcher overlays can alter how a game renders or receives input. Disable one overlay at a time and retest; if performance changes, you have identified a variable worth reporting to the overlay or game publisher.
Change one rendering setting at a time
Lower the display resolution first if the GPU is overloaded, then test demanding options such as shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, anti-aliasing, volumetric effects, and shader quality. Make one change, play the same area for a few minutes, and note whether frame rate or hitching changes. This creates a usable comparison instead of making it impossible to identify which setting mattered.
If reducing resolution produces a large improvement, rendering load is the likely limit. Keep the lower resolution or restore it and reduce another GPU-heavy option if image quality matters. If it has little effect while the game still hitches, investigate CPU load, memory pressure, storage activity, driver behavior, or thermal throttling rather than continuing to lower image quality. Do not promise a particular FPS gain: the result depends on the title and hardware.

Use the same save, map area, camera angle, battle effects, and settings for every comparison. A quiet room, menu, or cutscene can be much lighter than a crowded hub or effects-heavy boss fight. Note whether the slowdown appears only in one location; that pattern is useful when the game has a known area-specific issue.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s current guidance for graphics, processor-platform, and audio drivers. A game can behave differently after a driver update, so record the version and update date. If the problem clearly starts immediately after a new driver, use only the manufacturer’s supported rollback process and report the change to the publisher. Avoid installing several driver packages from unrelated sources while troubleshooting.
Use a repeatable test
Compare the same save, map area, camera angle, and graphics settings after each change. JRPG towns, battles, menus, and cutscenes can have very different workloads. A short test in an empty room is not evidence that a crowded hub or effects-heavy battle is fixed. Write down what changed and whether the result was better, worse, or unchanged; that record tells you when to stop tweaking and seek support.
Resolve controller detection and compatibility problems
Confirm the edition’s input standard
Controller support is not universal across JRPGs or even across editions of one game. In the Square Enix FAQ cited for a particular title, the Steam version accepts both DirectInput and XInput, while its Windows 10/11 version accepts XInput only. A pad can therefore work in one storefront version and fail in another without either the game or controller being defective.
Read the game’s own requirements and support page before buying an adapter or replacement. If the edition requires XInput, an XInput-compatible Xbox controller for PC is a category to consider, but compatibility must still be confirmed for that game and storefront. Do not treat one title’s compatibility table as a rule for every JRPG.
Isolate the physical connection
- Unplug the controller and reconnect it to a different USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub while testing.
- Disconnect other controllers, wheels, fight sticks, flight controls, USB adapters, and unusual input devices.
- Check that the cable or wireless receiver is firmly connected and that Windows recognizes the device.
- Install or reinstall the controller’s current device driver through the manufacturer’s supported method.
- Start the game only after the test controller is the sole active gamepad.
Square Enix’s Windows controller guidance also suggests trying a genuine Xbox controller as a diagnostic comparison. This does not prove that every other controller is unsupported; it supplies a known XInput reference point. If the known controller works, compare its input standard and connection with the original pad before buying anything.
Test the controller on another device
Use Windows’ controller test interface or another compatible computer. If buttons, axes, or connection dropouts fail there too, contact the controller manufacturer; replacing game files will not repair a hardware fault. If the controller works elsewhere, focus on the JRPG’s edition, input standard, launcher configuration, and software conflicts.

Test wired and wireless connections separately when both are available. A successful wired test does not prove that the receiver, Bluetooth connection, or wireless driver is healthy. Keep the test simple: one controller, one connection method, and no remapping utility.
Fix wrong buttons or erratic movement
For drifting, spinning cameras, or random movement, first verify that no second controller or virtual-input device is sending commands. Temporarily turn off third-party controller software, reconnect the pad, and recalibrate it using the operating system or manufacturer’s utility. Check the cable and receiver while watching for intermittent disconnects.

Erratic movement can also result from an input conflict rather than a worn stick. Unplug other devices, disable remappers temporarily, and launch the game with only the test pad connected. If the movement stops, reconnect devices one at a time until the conflict returns. If calibration fails outside the game, document the result for the manufacturer.
Square Enix’s erratic-movement support article suggests restarting with the controller unplugged if isolation and calibration do not help. Reconnect it after Windows has fully restarted, then test before launching other input utilities. Present this as a diagnostic sequence for the affected support context, not proof that every movement problem has the same cause.

- Reconnect peripherals one at a time after a successful test so a new conflict is easy to identify.
This workflow cannot guarantee a fix for every JRPG. It does, however, turn a broad complaint into a sequence of tests that distinguishes damaged files, unsupported input standards, resource limits, driver problems, peripheral conflicts, and failing hardware.

Will reinstalling the game always fix a crash?
