A gravel tubeless tire that leaks, will not seat, or keeps losing air usually has one of five causes: a puncture the sealant cannot close, inactive or poorly mixed sealant, an incorrectly seated bead, a leaking valve or rim tape, or damage to the tire casing or rim. Find the leak before adding more sealant. Keep pressure within the lower maximum rating printed for the tire or rim, and stop riding if the casing, bead, or rim is visibly damaged.
This guide gives a safe diagnostic order for the problems riders describe as “tubeless puncture won’t seal,” “tire won’t stay inflated,” “tire won’t seat,” and “sealant coming through sidewall.”
Start with a safe diagnosis
Remove the wheel from the bike when possible and inspect it in good light. Do not assume every air loss is a tread puncture. Air can escape at the valve, through a damaged rim tape, around the bead, through porous sidewalls, or from a cracked or dented rim.
- Do not ride a tire with a cut casing, exposed threads, a damaged bead, a bulge, or a rim crack.
- Use a pressure gauge and stay below the lower maximum pressure marked on the tire or rim.
- Keep fingers clear of the bead while inflating. A bead that suddenly seats can move violently.
- Use eye protection when using a compressor or tire booster, and never exceed the rated pressure of either component.
- Do not treat a plug as a guaranteed permanent repair. Inspect the tire before riding and replace it if the casing is compromised.
To locate a small leak, submerge the inflated wheel in water and watch for bubbles, or apply assembly fluid around the tread, sidewall, bead, valve, and rim bed. Rotate the wheel slowly so every area is checked.

Read the leak pattern before choosing a repair
The location and behavior of the air loss usually narrow the diagnosis. A tread hole may spit sealant in one spot, while a bead leak creates a line of bubbles around the rim. Bubbles at the valve point to the valve base, valve core, or the valve-to-rim seal. Air appearing at spoke holes or along a broad section of the rim bed suggests rim tape trouble. A slow mist through the sidewall can be casing porosity, but a concentrated stream beside a cut is structural damage.
Clean the area first so old sealant does not obscure the source. Inflate only enough to observe the leak safely, then mark the location with a removable marker or a small piece of tape. This prevents confusing a second leak with the first one after you rotate the wheel. If submerging the wheel, dry the tire and rim afterward and avoid leaving water trapped at the valve or under the tape.
Tubeless puncture will not seal
1. Put the puncture where sealant can reach it
When a tread hole is leaking, turn the wheel so the puncture is low or press that section toward the ground. Rotate and flex the tire gently. Holding the hole at the top of the wheel can leave the liquid sealant at the bottom, where it cannot reach the opening.
Leave the wheel in that position briefly and watch whether the spray changes to a damp spot and then stops. Reinflate only to a pressure that remains within both the tire and rim limits. A tire that repeatedly loses pressure needs further inspection even if it appears to seal temporarily.
2. Use a plug for a hole beyond the liquid sealant’s ability
A larger tread puncture may continue to spit sealant. A tubeless tire plug tool is the next repair option when the surrounding casing is sound and the opening is suitable for plugging. Follow the plug-tool maker’s insertion instructions, avoid enlarging the hole unnecessarily, and check that the plug is held securely before riding.
A plug addresses an opening; it does not restore damaged casing threads. If the cut is long, the sidewall is split, or the tire has a bulge, remove the tire and install a replacement instead of relying on a plug.
3. Install a tube for serious damage
Schwalbe identifies a replacement tube as the fallback for severe cuts and “snakebite” damage that sealant cannot close. Carry a tube that matches the tire’s diameter and width range, with a valve that fits the rim depth. Before installing it, remove any loose object from inside the tire and check that the rim tape has not shifted or torn. A tube is an emergency conversion, not proof that the damaged tire is safe for continued use.

Check compatibility and bead position
Confirm that the tire diameter, width, and tubeless designation are compatible with the rim. Inspect both beads for twists, trapped sections, cuts, or a bead that has fallen into the center channel when it should be near the rim hooks. The bead should sit correctly on both sides before inflation.

Use mounting fluid and position the valve correctly
Coat the beads with an appropriate mounting fluid. During inflation, place the valve between the two beads; this helps the beads close around the valve area instead of leaving a gap there. Do not use household oils or solvents that can attack rubber or contaminate sealant.
Give the tire a controlled initial air blast
A floor pump may work, but a compressor or tire booster provides a stronger initial burst. Remove the valve core only if your inflation equipment and the tire manufacturer’s instructions allow it, and refit the core before adding sealant through the valve. Keep your hands and face away from the bead while inflating.
Listen for the bead to move into place and inspect the molded seating line around the entire rim. The line should be evenly spaced from the rim edge. If one section remains low, release all pressure, reposition that section, apply more mounting fluid, and try again. Never keep increasing pressure past the lower maximum marked for the rim or tire.
Avoid CO2 when the sealant maker warns against it
Schwalbe cautions that CO2 can adversely affect its puncture-protection fluid. Use a floor pump, compressor, or tire booster for setup when the sealant instructions call for it. If CO2 has already been used and the tire behaves unusually, inspect the sealant’s condition and renew it according to the product maker’s directions.
The tire seats but will not stay inflated
Look for bead or sidewall bubbling
Bubbles along the bead or through a porous sidewall indicate that air is escaping somewhere other than a single tread puncture. Shake the sealant thoroughly before filling or transferring it, then rotate the wheel so liquid reaches the leaking bead and casing. Gently rock the wheel side to side and spin it to distribute the fluid.
If bubbling continues, check the tire and rim combination, the seating line, valve area, and rim tape. Repeatedly adding sealant without finding the leak can hide a mechanical fault and leave the tire under-protected.
Confirm that the sealant is still active
Sealant can dry out, separate, or become ineffective. Inspect the fluid through the valve or by removing one bead and follow the sealant maker’s renewal instructions. Schwalbe’s North American FAQ recommends checking and renewing sealant before a competition or longer journey. That is a manufacturer recommendation for preparation, not a universal replacement interval for every formula.

Do not assume a tire is protected merely because it once held air. A tire can remain inflated after the liquid has dried and then fail to seal the next puncture.

Air is escaping at the valve or rim
Inspect the valve and valve seat
Apply assembly fluid or submerge the valve area and watch for a stream of bubbles. Remove dirt from the valve and rim contact surfaces, check that the rubber base sits flat, and tighten the valve nut by hand until secure. Over-tightening can deform the seal or damage the rim tape.
If the valve body, base, or core is damaged, replace it. A leaking valve is not fixed by adding more sealant to the tire.
Check the rim tape and rim bed
Air escaping from spoke holes, a rim joint, or a broad section of the rim bed usually points to tape or rim damage. Remove the tire and inspect for wrinkles, lifted edges, punctures, or tape that does not cover every spoke hole. Replace damaged tape with a width and type intended for the rim. A crack, dent, or failed rim joint requires inspection by a qualified mechanic; do not treat it as a sealant problem.

A bead that is not evenly seated can leak near the rim and mimic a valve or tape failure. Check the seating line after inflating and before deciding which component to replace. If the line remains uneven despite correct mounting fluid and a controlled inflation attempt, stop and obtain professional wheel or tire service.
Sealant seems ineffective
Shake before every fill or transfer
Particles that help seal holes can settle at the bottom of the container. Shake the bottle vigorously before pouring or injecting it. Schwalbe’s official tubeless FAQ states that insufficient shaking before filling or transferring is a common cause of a tubeless system not staying airtight.
Use the maker’s dosage and compatibility guidance
Schwalbe’s 2026 product instruction lists 60–90 ml of Doc Blue for tires 23–60 mm wide. That figure applies to that product’s instruction and is not a universal gravel-tire dosage. Use the exact sealant maker’s amount for your tire width and casing, and verify that the formula is approved for the tire construction.
Renew contaminated or dried fluid
If the sealant has rubbery clumps, a dry film, or little liquid, remove the old material and refill with fresh sealant. Follow the product instructions for cleaning and renewal. Do not mix formulas unless the makers state that they are compatible.

Persistent bubbling, a visible cut, exposed casing threads, or a sidewall that will not hold pressure indicates more than a routine porosity issue. Deflate the tire, inspect it internally and externally, and replace it if the structure is damaged. Do not continue riding a visibly compromised sidewall.
Choosing the next repair
| Repair option | Use it when | What to verify | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealant | A small puncture or porous area can be reached by liquid. | Correct formula, compatibility, active fluid, and manufacturer fill guidance. | It may not close a large hole, long cut, or casing failure. |
| Tubeless plug kit | A tread opening is larger than the sealant can close and the casing remains sound. | Plug-tool suitability, secure insertion, and a sound tire around the hole. | Not a guaranteed permanent repair and not appropriate for a split sidewall or damaged bead. |
| Spare tube | A severe puncture or casing problem prevents tubeless sealing. | Correct tube size, valve fit, and a rim tape that is still intact. | Converts the wheel temporarily; it does not make a damaged tire safe. |
| Professional service | Valve, tape, rim, compatibility, or seating faults remain unresolved. | Ask for an inspection of the tire, bead, valve, tape, and rim together. | Do not keep riding while a structural rim or tire fault is undiagnosed. |
A complete roadside and workshop workflow
- Stop and assess. If the tire is flat, the casing is cut, or the rim is damaged, move to a safe location and do not ride on it.
- Find the leak. Inflate cautiously and use water or assembly fluid to check the tread, sidewall, bead, valve, and rim bed.
- Try sealant distribution. Put the leak low, rotate the wheel, and flex the tire so active sealant reaches it.
- Plug a suitable larger tread hole. Use a tubeless plug tool only when the casing around the puncture is sound.
- Reinflate within limits. Use the lower maximum pressure marked for the tire or rim, and verify that the seating line is even.
- Inspect non-tread leaks. Check the valve nut and base, rim tape, bead, and rim joint instead of adding more liquid blindly.
- Install a correctly sized tube if needed. Use this fallback for serious casing damage or a puncture that cannot be made airtight.
- Recheck before riding. Spin the wheel, listen for escaping air, confirm the pressure remains stable, and inspect the repair again after a short stationary wait.
Setup checklist after a repair or tire change
Before trusting the wheel on a gravel ride, complete a deliberate final check. Confirm that both beads sit on the same seating line all the way around and that there is no section pulled toward the center channel. Check pressure with a gauge, using the lower maximum marked on the tire or rim. Turn the wheel slowly and look for fresh bubbles at the puncture, bead, sidewall, valve, and rim bed.
Spin the wheel and listen in a quiet place. A faint hiss that returns after you wipe away sealant means the problem is not finished. Leave the wheel stationary for a short period, then measure pressure again. If it has dropped materially, repeat the leak test rather than assuming the sealant needs topping up. When a tube has been fitted as an emergency measure, check that it is not pinched and that the damaged tire is scheduled for replacement or inspection.

What to carry for gravel rides
A practical repair loadout should match the failures you can safely address away from a workshop: an inflation device suitable for your valves, a tubeless plug kit for appropriate tread holes, tire levers, and a correctly sized spare tube. The tube needs the correct diameter and width range, and its valve must suit the rim depth. Carrying a plug does not remove the need to inspect the casing; carrying a tube does not make a cut or damaged bead safe to ride.
Before a long ride or competition, check that the sealant is still fluid and active, shake it thoroughly, and follow the maker’s fill guidance. This preparation is more reliable than discovering dried or separated sealant after a puncture. If your setup has previously leaked at the valve or tape, repair that fault before riding rather than relying on extra liquid.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preventing repeat failures
- Shake sealant before every fill or transfer and check its condition before long rides or events.
- Use the tire maker’s compatibility and fill guidance rather than a generic dosage.
- Inspect the seating line after every installation and after a hard impact.
- Carry a pump or suitable inflation device, a plug kit for appropriate tread punctures, tire levers, and a correctly sized spare tube.
- Check valves and rim tape when a tire repeatedly loses air without a visible tread hole.
- Record the tire and rim pressure limits and use the lower applicable value.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop home repairs and seek qualified service when the rim is cracked or dented, the bead is damaged, the sidewall shows a cut or bulge, the rim tape repeatedly fails, or the tire will not seat after compatibility, bead position, mounting fluid, and controlled inflation have been checked. A persistent leak is a reason to diagnose the system, not to keep adding sealant or riding on low pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my tubeless puncture keep leaking after I add sealant?
Put the puncture at the bottom of the wheel, rotate and gently flex the tire, and give active sealant time to reach the hole. If it continues to spit liquid, the opening may be too large for sealant and may need a tubeless plug. A long cut, split sidewall, bulge, or exposed casing requires tire replacement or a correctly sized tube as an emergency fallback, not repeated sealant additions.
How do I know whether the leak is the tire, valve, bead, or rim tape?
Inflate cautiously and use water or assembly fluid while rotating the wheel. Bubbles at one tread spot suggest a puncture; a line along the bead suggests seating or compatibility; bubbles at the valve suggest the valve base or core; air at spoke holes or across the rim bed suggests tape or rim damage. A crack or failed rim joint needs inspection, not more sealant.

What should I do when a tubeless tire will not seat?
Verify tire and rim compatibility, place both beads correctly, coat them with suitable mounting fluid, and position the valve between the beads. Use a controlled initial blast from a floor pump, compressor, or tire booster within the lower pressure limit of the tire or rim. Check that the molded seating line is even. Release pressure and reposition the bead if one section remains low.
Can I use CO2 to seat a gravel tubeless tire?
Schwalbe cautions that CO2 can adversely affect its puncture-protection fluid. Use a floor pump, compressor, or tire booster when the sealant instructions call for it. If CO2 has already been used and the tire behaves unusually, inspect the sealant and renew it according to that product’s instructions.
How much sealant should a gravel tire get?
Use the exact maker’s guidance for the tire and sealant combination. Schwalbe’s 2026 Doc Blue instruction lists 60–90 ml for tires 23–60 mm wide, but that is product-specific and not a universal gravel-tire dosage. Shake the fluid thoroughly before filling or transferring it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs a plug a permanent repair?
No. A plug can suit a larger tread opening when the surrounding casing is sound, but it does not restore casing threads and is not guaranteed permanent. Inspect the tire before riding and replace it if the hole is accompanied by a split sidewall, damaged bead, bulge, or other structural defect.
When should I install a spare tube?
Use a tube when severe puncture, snakebite damage, or casing failure prevents tubeless sealing. Match the tube’s diameter and width range to the tire and make sure its valve fits the rim depth. Check the rim tape and remove loose debris first. The conversion is temporary and does not make a damaged tire safe for continued use.
Why is sealant bubbling through the sidewall?
A small amount of seepage can occur as sealant reaches a porous casing. Lay that area downward, rotate the wheel, and make sure the sealant was shaken. Persistent bubbling, a visible cut, exposed threads, or a sidewall that will not hold pressure indicates structural damage; deflate and replace or have the tire inspected.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the leak before adding anything. Let active sealant reach a small puncture, use a suitable plug only for a sound casing, and fit a correctly sized tube when damage is too severe to seal. For seating problems, verify compatibility, use mounting fluid, inflate with a controlled initial blast, and inspect the seating line. Valve, tape, bead, and rim faults need their own repairs, and any cut, bulge, damaged bead, or cracked rim is a stop-riding condition.
