Most A2L first-layer failures should be approached in a fixed order: stop if the nozzle is scraping, verify that the build plate is correctly oriented and seated, wash a touched plate with hot water and detergent, dry it completely, and confirm that the plate is the one intended for the print. These checks are directly supported by Bambu Lab’s A2L AMS Combo manual and solve the simplest causes without risking the printer.
If the problem remains, separate contamination or plate compatibility from leveling and calibration questions. Bambu Lab documentation found for another model identifies those as broad adhesion categories, but it does not establish an A2L-specific calibration sequence, Z-offset procedure, menu path, or mechanical repair. Do not copy another model’s settings to the A2L; use current A2L documentation for any procedure beyond plate setup and cleaning.
Stop the print before diagnosing it
A nozzle that presses into or scrapes across the build plate can damage the nozzle, the plate coating, or both. Pause or cancel the print and inspect the situation rather than allowing repeated passes to continue. A first layer that looks merely untidy is different from a nozzle that is physically dragging: scraping, loud repeated contact, gouging, or a toolhead that cannot move normally is a stop condition.
- Stop the printer if the nozzle is visibly digging into the plate, dragging across a ridge, or producing repeated hard contact.
- Wait until the machine is safe to handle before touching the plate. Treat the nozzle and bed as hot until they have cooled.
- Do not force the toolhead by hand or continue a test print simply to see whether the problem improves.
- Record what happened: the plate type, filament, approximate location of the failure, and whether contact was scraping, lifting, or failing to bond. This information helps if you need support.
Never use a damaged plate as a diagnostic surface. A deep gouge, lifted coating, crack, warped area, or exposed base is a reason to stop using that plate and verify the correct replacement with Bambu Lab documentation.

Recognize the first-layer symptom
The appearance of the first layer tells you which basic check to make first. The table is a triage aid, not a substitute for A2L-specific calibration instructions.
| What you see | Most useful first checks | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| The whole layer lifts or corners peel | Confirm plate orientation, clean the surface, and verify that the plate matches the print setup. | Do not assume a Z-offset change is the cure. |
| Only one area fails | Inspect that area for residue, damage, a ridge, or a plate that is not seated flat. | Do not assume the entire printer needs mechanical adjustment. |
| Lines look thin, wavy, or dragged | Stop if there is contact, then check plate seating, cleanliness, and compatibility. | Those symptoms can have several causes; they do not prove a particular calibration error. |
| The nozzle scrapes or presses into the plate | Stop immediately and inspect the plate and setup. | Do not continue printing or make an unverified manual offset change. |
| The layer sticks in some places but not others | Check for fingerprints, residue, a damaged patch, or an incorrectly positioned plate. | Do not treat a replacement plate as routine before cleaning and inspection. |
Bambu Lab’s X2D manual describes poor adhesion as material that does not adhere firmly, with lines that may appear thin, wavy, or dragged. It lists a mismatched build plate, a dirty plate, and bed leveling not being performed as possible causes. That is useful diagnostic vocabulary, but the X2D is a different model. Its menu paths and procedures should not be presented as A2L instructions.
Use this safe A2L triage sequence
1. Remove the failed print without worsening the surface
Once the printer is safe to handle, remove loose filament and the failed part using the normal handling method for your plate. Do not pry against a gouge or use a sharp tool in a way that can cut the coating. If material is firmly bonded, avoid escalating force; a damaged surface is harder to diagnose than a failed print.

2. Confirm the plate orientation and alignment
The A2L manual explicitly instructs users to install the build plate in the correct orientation and align its edges with the heatbed. Remove and reinstall the plate carefully so that it sits in the intended position, with its edges aligned rather than skewed or riding on an obstruction.
Check the entire perimeter. A plate can look almost correct while one corner is not seated, an edge is shifted, or debris is trapped underneath. Do not print until the plate is flat, aligned, and the surface intended for printing is facing the correct way.

3. Wash a touched plate with hot water and detergent
Fingerprints transfer oils that can defeat adhesion even when a plate looks clean. Bambu Lab’s A2L manual recommends washing the surface with hot water and detergent if it has been touched, for the best adhesion properties. Follow that instruction as the first cleaning response rather than repeatedly wiping a contaminated surface and redistributing the oil.
- Remove the plate from the printer and handle it by its edges.
- Wash the printing surface with hot water and detergent.
- Rinse away detergent residue.
- Dry the plate completely with a clean method that does not add lint or oil.
- Handle the dry surface only by its edges, then reinstall it in the correct orientation and alignment.
The manual’s advice is about the plate surface, not about changing slicer flow or height settings. Do not introduce an adhesive product, abrasive treatment, solvent, or coating unless current A2L documentation specifically calls for it; an unverified treatment can change the surface and complicate support.

4. Verify that the installed plate is intended for the print
Plate compatibility is a separate question from cleanliness. Confirm that the installed plate is an A2L-compatible plate and that its surface is intended for the filament and print setup you selected. The printer, slicer profile, and physical plate should describe the same setup.
If you changed plates recently, compare the plate’s markings and the selected print setup before changing anything else. A plate that physically fits is not automatically the correct plate for every material or profile. The available A2L material does not establish a complete compatibility chart, so use the current Bambu Lab A2L documentation for the exact plate and filament combination.
5. Inspect for damage, residue, and a flat seating surface
After cleaning, inspect the plate under good light. Look for a visible gouge, blister, crack, exposed base, warped region, or residue that remains after washing. Also inspect the underside and the heatbed area for particles that could keep the plate from sitting flat.

A dirty plate can usually be cleaned; a damaged or permanently distorted plate is a different case. Do not sand, bend, scrape, or otherwise rework the plate as an improvised repair. If the surface is damaged, stop using it until you have confirmed the correct A2L replacement or support procedure.
6. Run a controlled confirmation print
After the plate is clean, dry, correctly oriented, aligned, compatible, and undamaged, run a small, known-good first-layer test using the same plate and material intended for the job. Watch the first layer rather than leaving immediately. Stop if the nozzle contacts the plate or the lines are dragged into ridges.
Change one condition at a time. If you replace the plate, change material, and alter calibration simultaneously, you will not know which action affected the result. Keep the failed sample and note the exact setup so a later support conversation has useful evidence.
Separate surface problems from leveling questions
Plate condition and leveling can produce similar symptoms, which is why cleaning and seating checks come first. A contaminated surface often causes isolated gaps, edge lifting, or inconsistent adhesion where fingerprints or residue are present. A plate that is not aligned or seated flat can create a location-specific failure. A broader height-related problem may affect much of the first layer, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause safely.
The X2D manual’s list of possible adhesion causes includes bed leveling, but that is general context from another Bambu Lab model. The available A2L documentation does not establish the exact A2L calibration sequence, the calibration menu path, acceptable values, or a manual Z-offset procedure. Treat leveling as an escalation category, not as permission to copy X2D steps.

What to check without changing calibration
- Confirm the plate is the correct one and is fully seated.
- Clean and dry the plate after any contact with the printing surface.
- Check for a warped or damaged region.
- Observe whether the failure follows the plate when the same setup is repeated, or remains in a fixed location.
- Read the current A2L instructions for the installed firmware and plate before starting any calibration routine.
What requires verified A2L instructions
Do not manually adjust Z offset, change flow to hide a height problem, alter bed-tramming hardware, disassemble the toolhead, or substitute a calibration sequence from the X2D manual. Those actions can create a new fault, damage components, or make the original symptom harder to reproduce. Only perform them when current A2L-specific documentation gives the exact path, prerequisites, and safe limits.
Check plate and material compatibility before buying anything
A replacement plate is not a universal cure for a first-layer problem. It is reasonable only when the current plate is confirmed damaged, permanently contaminated, incompatible with the setup, or otherwise unsuitable after the cleaning and seating checks.
| Decision question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no or unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Is the current plate visibly damaged or warped? | Stop using it and verify an exact A2L replacement. | Clean and inspect before considering a purchase. |
| Is the plate confirmed compatible with the A2L? | Continue checking its intended material and surface. | Do not assume that a plate advertised as fitting another model will work. |
| Does its surface match the filament and print profile? | Use the manufacturer’s setup guidance for that combination. | Check current A2L documentation before printing. |
| Was the plate merely touched or dirty? | Wash it with hot water and detergent, rinse, dry, and retest. | Investigate damage or compatibility instead of buying immediately. |
The A2L material supports the accessory category of an A2L-compatible build plate, but it does not identify a verified replacement SKU, price, availability, or performance comparison. Confirm the exact fit and surface type from the manufacturer before ordering.

Continuing a scrape to collect more evidence
Repeated contact can turn a recoverable setup error into a damaged nozzle or plate. Evidence is more useful when collected from a stopped printer, a cleaned plate, and a controlled test.

Changing several variables at once
Changing plate, filament, calibration, and slicer settings together removes the ability to identify the cause. Restore a known setup and make one documented change at a time.
Copying another model’s procedure
Different printers can expose different sensors, firmware controls, plate systems, and mechanical adjustments. The X2D manual’s adhesion discussion is not an A2L service manual. Do not copy its menu paths or calibration instructions.
Assuming every failure means the plate must be replaced
Fingerprints, incorrect orientation, poor seating, and a mismatched setup can all resemble a bad plate. Replacement is justified by confirmed damage or incompatibility, not by one failed print.
When to consult current Bambu Lab A2L guidance
Escalate after the plate has been correctly installed, thoroughly washed and dried, verified for the intended setup, and inspected for damage, yet the same first-layer problem persists. Before changing calibration or opening the printer, consult the current A2L user manual and Bambu Lab support or Wiki for the firmware and plate in use.
Have these details ready:
- The exact A2L model and firmware version shown by the printer.
- The plate type and any markings on it.
- The filament type and the print profile selected.
- Whether the plate was washed with hot water and detergent after the failure.
- Photos of the first layer, plate surface, and any scraping or damage.
- Whether the failure is global, confined to one area, or follows a particular plate.
Ask specifically for the current A2L calibration sequence and safe escalation path. If support identifies a calibration or mechanical issue, follow its documented order and limits rather than improvising a Z adjustment or disassembly.
A compact decision tree
- Is the nozzle scraping or pressing into the plate? Stop immediately, cool the printer safely, and inspect the plate and setup.
- Is the plate correctly oriented and aligned? If not, reinstall it before any further test.
- Has the printing surface been touched? If yes, wash it with hot water and detergent, rinse, dry, and handle it by the edges.
- Is the plate confirmed for this A2L print setup? If unknown, verify compatibility before changing settings.
- Is the plate damaged or warped? Remove it from service and verify an exact replacement; do not modify it.
- Does a controlled test still fail? Consult current A2L-specific guidance for calibration and escalation. Do not copy another model’s procedure.
What a successful first layer should establish
A successful retest should show that the plate is seated and the nozzle can pass over the surface without scraping, while the deposited lines remain attached instead of lifting, bunching, or being dragged. The important result is repeatability: the same clean, compatible plate and material should produce the same stable first layer in a controlled test.
If the result changes only after cleaning or reinstalling the plate, keep those handling steps in your normal preparation routine. If it does not change after all documented setup checks, stop experimenting with unverified offsets or repairs and move to A2L-specific support.
