To fix common fighting game input lag on PS5, start with the display’s Game or low-latency mode, then verify the console’s video-output settings under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Test 120 Hz, ALLM and VRR only when the game and display support them. If you see a blank screen, flicker or an unexpectedly low refresh rate, treat that as a signal problem rather than ordinary control delay.
There is no single PS5 switch that removes every kind of lag, and the official guidance does not provide a guaranteed millisecond reduction for fighting games. The reliable approach is to identify the symptom, change one setting, retest in the same situation and keep the setting only if it improves play without creating a new display problem.
Identify what kind of delay you are experiencing
“Input lag” can describe several different symptoms. A button may feel late even though the picture is stable, or the picture may flicker, lose signal or drop to an unexpected resolution. Those are not the same fault and should not be chased with the same fix.

If the game displays normally but a punch, block or menu selection appears later than expected, the display’s image-processing path is a sensible first place to check. A television or monitor can add processing before showing a frame. A display Game mode or documented low-latency mode is intended to reduce that processing, although it cannot make all input delay disappear.

Signal instability
A black screen, intermittent picture, flicker, missing HDR, low resolution or a refresh rate that falls below the expected value indicates a video-output or compatibility issue. Fix the connection and compatibility checks before judging whether a latency setting helped.
A quick diagnostic comparison
- Open the PS5 home screen and move through menus with the same controller.
- Launch the affected fighting game and reproduce the delay in a repeatable situation, such as a training-mode recording or a fixed combo.
- Compare the two observations. This comparison can show whether the sensation is also present outside the game, but it does not identify a definitive cause by itself.
- Repeat every later test in the same game, display picture mode and in-game situation. Changing several variables at once makes an improvement impossible to attribute.
Online matches can add network or game-rollback effects that resemble local delay. The settings below address the PS5-to-display path; they do not measure or diagnose your internet connection, a game’s netcode or controller latency.
Put the display in its lowest-latency picture mode
Use the television or monitor’s Game mode, Low Latency mode or equivalent setting before changing advanced PS5 options. Menu names differ by display, so follow the display manufacturer’s current instructions for enabling the mode and for selecting the HDMI input used by the PS5.
Sony’s support guidance for the INZONE M10S monitor describes a Low latency option that reduces input-lag throttling in fast-paced games. It also states that turning Low latency on cannot completely reduce input lag. That qualification applies to the described monitor setting and is a useful warning against treating any Game-mode label as a guarantee.
After enabling the mode, perform the same in-game comparison. If the delay remains but the signal is stable, continue with the PS5 output checks. If enabling the mode causes an unexpected picture change, record the original mode so you can revert it and consult the display’s documentation rather than guessing at unrelated controls.
Check PS5 video-output settings
On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The options below are conditional: a setting is useful only when the connected display, HDMI path and game can use it.

ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode)
On a compatible display, ALLM lets the PS5 request the display’s low-latency mode automatically when a game runs. This is a convenience and compatibility feature, not a measured promise of a particular delay.
PlayStation notes an important interaction: VRR output can still trigger a display’s low-latency mode even when the PS5 ALLM setting is Off. If you need ALLM disabled completely, VRR must also be Off. Therefore, an ALLM change by itself may not produce the picture-mode behavior you expect; check the display’s on-screen information while testing.
120 Hz Output
120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz video for displays and games that support it. It is not a universal “faster controls” switch. The title must offer an appropriate high-refresh mode, the display must accept the signal, and the complete HDMI chain must carry it.
Leave the option enabled when those requirements are met and the output is stable. PlayStation advises turning it off if it causes video-output problems. A stable 60 Hz image is preferable to a 120 Hz configuration that produces a blank screen, repeated resynchronization or an incorrect mode.
Resolution and Video Transfer Rate
Still in Video Output, check that Resolution and Video Transfer Rate are set appropriately for the connected display. Avoid forcing a mode that the television, monitor or HDMI input cannot accept. If you changed either option while troubleshooting, note the original value so you can restore it after each controlled test.

It reports what the connected display accepts; it is not a controller-to-screen latency measurement. Use it to establish whether the advertised mode is available before interpreting a game’s behavior.

Test VRR without assuming it is always faster
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the console’s frame output. PlayStation says VRR can reduce visual artifacts and that gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother, but results vary by game, display and visual mode. Previously released games may require a patch for full VRR optimization.
The official description is deliberately qualified: “Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.*” The asterisk caveat on the same page says results may vary by game, display and visual mode. Treat VRR as a per-title experiment, not a guaranteed fighting-game latency reduction.
A safe VRR comparison
- Confirm that the display supports VRR and that its firmware is current.
- Enable VRR on the PS5 and, if the display has a separate VRR control, enable the corresponding input feature.
- Use the same game, stage, visual mode and repeatable action you used for the baseline.
- Compare responsiveness and picture stability with VRR on and off.
- If you enabled Apply to Unsupported Games and see unexpected behavior, turn that option off. Unsupported titles are a reason to avoid forcing VRR.
Sony also notes that some displays may flicker with VRR. If flicker appears, disabling VRR is a valid corrective action; a clean, stable image is more useful than a feature that introduces visible instability.

Fix a missing, flickering or incorrect 4K/120 Hz signal
When the symptom is no signal or an incorrect output mode, follow these checks before buying hardware. PlayStation’s guidance identifies the PS5 as supporting the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120 Hz output, while warning that compatibility issues can occur as the technology is adopted across devices.
- Confirm display support. Check the television or monitor’s specifications for 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and the relevant HDR modes. Some displays support these features on only one or two HDMI inputs.
- Update display firmware. Install the current firmware offered by the display manufacturer, then restart the display and PS5.
- Select the correct HDMI input. Use the HDMI 2.1-capable port identified by the display documentation and enable any input option required for its enhanced bandwidth mode.
- Connect directly. Connect the PS5 directly to the display while testing. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device or other intermediary that may not pass 4K/120 Hz or VRR.
- Check the cable. Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If the existing cable is missing, damaged or not rated for the required signal, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable change addresses signal capacity and reliability; it does not lower game-processing or network delay.
- Recheck console output settings. Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set Resolution and Video Transfer Rate appropriately for the display. Re-run Test 1440p Output when applicable.
| Observed symptom | First checks | What the check can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Game controls feel late, picture is stable | Display Game or low-latency mode; then one PS5 video setting at a time | Whether display processing or a supported output feature changes the sensation |
| Blank screen or repeated resynchronization | Display support, firmware, correct HDMI 2.1 port, direct connection and cable | Whether the signal path can carry the selected mode |
| Flicker after enabling VRR | Compare VRR off; check display firmware and VRR compatibility | Whether VRR is introducing a display-specific stability problem |
| 120 Hz option works in one title but not another | Check that the specific game supports 120 Hz and its current patch | Whether the limitation is title-specific rather than a console fault |
| Unexpectedly low resolution or refresh rate | Resolution, Video Transfer Rate, HDMI input mode and Test 1440p Output | What mode the connected display actually accepts |
When PS5 120 Hz output is not working
“PS5 120 Hz output not working” can mean several things: the display never reports 120 Hz, the console falls back to a lower mode, or a particular game does not offer a 120 Hz option. Use this order:
- Verify 120 Hz support for the exact display model and HDMI input. Support on one port does not prove support on every port.
- Install the display’s current firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly with the included cable or a properly rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Confirm 120 Hz Output is enabled under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Check the game’s own graphics or performance options and its current documentation or patch notes. A console-capable output does not force every title to render at 120 Hz.
- If enabling 120 Hz produces no picture or other output errors, turn 120 Hz Output off and restore a stable mode while you isolate the incompatible component.
Do not convert the 120 Hz specification into a promised millisecond improvement. The official material documents capability and settings, not a controlled fighting-game latency reduction.

Understanding the PS5 ALLM setting
ALLM is most useful when you want the display to switch into its low-latency picture mode automatically during games. It depends on a compatible display and an HDMI path that passes the relevant signal. If you turn ALLM off but leave VRR on, VRR output may still cause the display to enter low-latency mode. To prevent that trigger as well, turn VRR off.

Understanding PS5 VRR input lag reports
Reports that “PS5 VRR input lag” is better or worse are not automatically transferable between games or displays. VRR changes refresh synchronization; it does not replace the display’s own processing pipeline, and its effect depends on the title’s frame output and visual mode.
Use a reversible A/B test. Keep 120 Hz, resolution, picture mode and game settings constant; compare VRR on and off; observe both button response and visual stability. If the game has not been patched for VRR or behaves unexpectedly with Apply to Unsupported Games, leave that compatibility option off. If the display flickers, disable VRR and use the stable configuration.
Compare the available fixes by the problem they address
| Option | Required support | Primary effect | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display Game or low-latency mode | Display must provide the mode | Reduces display processing; Sony says the INZONE M10S setting cannot eliminate input lag | Labels and behavior differ by display |
| ALLM | Compatible PS5 display and HDMI path | Automatically requests low-latency mode during games | VRR can still trigger low-latency mode when ALLM is Off |
| 120 Hz Output | PS5, game, display and HDMI chain must support 120 Hz | Provides 120 Hz video when the title and display use it | Turn it off if it causes output problems |
| VRR | Compatible display and title or supported mode | Can reduce visual artifacts and make many titles feel smoother | Results vary; unsupported games and some displays may flicker |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | Needed only when the current cable is inadequate for the target signal | Improves the chance of carrying 4K/120 Hz reliably | Does not reduce in-game processing or network delay |
Use a one-change-at-a-time retest procedure
A fighting game gives you a repeatable test environment, so use it to avoid placebo and configuration confusion.
- Write down the current display picture mode, PS5 Resolution, Video Transfer Rate, 120 Hz Output, VRR and Apply to Unsupported Games states.
- Choose one title and one repeatable situation. Training mode is useful because it removes matchmaking and network variability, but it does not measure controller-to-screen latency.
- Change only the display’s Game or low-latency mode and retest.
- Restore the baseline if the result is unclear, then test one PS5 option—such as 120 Hz, ALLM or VRR—while leaving the others unchanged.
- Watch for both responsiveness and new faults: flicker, blanking, resolution changes, HDR loss or repeated resynchronization.
- Keep a setting only when the improvement is repeatable and the output remains stable.
- For a signal fault, stop latency comparisons until the direct connection, HDMI input, firmware and cable checks are complete.
Common mistakes that waste time
Assuming a higher refresh rate guarantees lower input lag
120 Hz describes the video refresh capability. It does not state how quickly a particular display processes a controller signal, nor does it guarantee that every game uses the mode.

Forcing VRR on every game
PlayStation allows an Apply to Unsupported Games option, but unexpected behavior is a reason to disable it. A title-specific comparison is safer than assuming compatibility.
Replacing the cable first
The PS5-included cable is the official first option. Replace it only when the current cable is missing, damaged or inadequate for the required 4K/120 Hz signal, and do not expect a new cable to change local game processing.
Changing several settings together
Turning on Game mode, 120 Hz, ALLM and VRR simultaneously may alter the picture, but it prevents you from knowing which change mattered. Keep a written baseline and test sequentially.
Blaming a controller without isolating the display path
The available official material does not establish that buying a different controller fixes PS5 fighting-game input lag. First isolate display processing and video-output behavior. If delay remains after a stable, low-latency display configuration, investigate the game, controller and network separately rather than assuming a purchase will solve it.
What the official guidance does—and does not—prove
PlayStation’s documentation supports checking display compatibility, firmware, HDMI input selection, direct connection, cable rating and PS5 video settings. It also explains that VRR benefits vary by game, display and visual mode, and that previously released games may need patches.
It does not provide a cross-display ranking, a universal best combination of VRR, 120 Hz and ALLM, controller-latency comparisons or a measured millisecond reduction for PS5 fighting games. No named population statistic or controlled fighting-game benchmark establishes a guaranteed number. Keep those limits attached to any claim you make about improvement.
The practical verdict is therefore conditional: use the display’s documented low-latency mode, verify a compatible and stable PS5 output, and compare VRR, 120 Hz and ALLM in the specific game. If the picture is unstable, solve the HDMI path first; if the picture is stable but controls still feel late, continue with game- and network-specific diagnosis rather than promising that one console setting will eliminate the delay.
