Most Fallout 4 crashes and frame-rate problems can be isolated without replacing hardware. First classify the symptom—launch failure, an in-game crash, a black screen, low or uneven performance, or a simulation that runs too fast or too slowly. Then test reversible changes in order: confirm your PC and game version, update the graphics driver, disable Creations and other mods, verify the installation, and restore default video settings. Keep a note of what changed immediately before the problem started.
The procedures below are for the PC version. Bethesda’s support instructions vary by launcher and platform, and a fix for an old build may be unnecessary after a patch. Before changing files, record your Fallout 4 version, store or launcher, display refresh rate, installed Creations or custom mods, and any custom INI edits.

Start with the symptom, version, and platform
A crash at startup has different likely causes from a black screen after pressing Play, while a game that appears smooth but runs in fast-forward is usually tied to refresh-rate or frame-pacing settings. Write down the exact trigger:

- In-game crash: it reaches the menu, then closes in a location, during loading, or after a specific action.
- Black screen: the game opens but displays no usable image.
- Poor performance: low frame rate, hitching, or stutter without a full crash.
- Incorrect game speed: characters, physics, or menus move unusually fast or slowly.
Also record whether Fallout 4 came from Steam, the Microsoft Store, or another supported PC launcher; whether Creations or manually installed mods are active; and whether the problem began after a game update, driver update, mod change, or display change. This record prevents you from applying a launch fix to a performance problem or an old workaround to a version that already contains a correction.

Check the published PC requirements first
Bethesda’s system-requirements page lists the following reference hardware. These are the specifications Bethesda published, not a promise that every current Windows installation or modern mod list will be compatible. The operating-system examples are especially dated, so treat them as a baseline and confirm that your current Windows build, drivers, and hardware are supported by their manufacturers.
| Component | Minimum published example | Recommended published example |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 7, 8, or 10 | 64-bit Windows 7, 8, or 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD Phenom II X4 945 class | Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD FX-9590 class |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB class | NVIDIA GTX 780 3 GB or AMD Radeon R9 290X 4 GB class |
| Storage | 30 GB free HDD space | 30 GB free HDD space |
If your computer is below these references, first reduce resolution and quality and remove add-ons before assuming the game files are damaged. If it meets them, requirements alone do not rule out a driver conflict, a corrupted file, an incompatible mod, or a version-specific defect.
Update awareness: check the build before using old fixes
Bethesda’s August 18, 2026 Fallout 4 update raised the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1,024. It also fixed a Steam Deck virtual-keyboard crash, a streaming-audio crash, and a Microsoft Store Creations-menu crash that occurred when connectivity resumed. Those fixes are platform- and version-specific; they do not establish a universal solution for every crash after an update.

Open your launcher’s game information or version display and compare it with the current patch notes. Note the store platform as well as the version because a Microsoft Store Creations issue and a Steam launch-option issue require different checks. If your symptom matches one of the corrected defects, update before trying a workaround designed for an earlier build. If the crash began immediately after updating, keep the version number in any support request and test with Creations disabled so the update and add-on variables are separated.
What should I do if Fallout 4 is crashing?
Use the following sequence for both launch crashes and crashes during play. Stop when the symptom is resolved, and change one variable at a time so you know which test mattered.
1. Install the current graphics driver
Download the driver for your GPU from its manufacturer and reboot after installation. A driver update is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee; if the crash began directly after a driver change, note that timing and test the game with all nonessential overlays and tuning profiles disabled.

2. Test without Creations and custom mods
Temporarily disable or remove Creations and manually installed mods, then launch an unmodified game. If the game has custom mods, remove them before reinstalling or repairing files; otherwise a repair can leave altered files or an incompatible load order in place. Do not delete saved games while performing this test. A successful vanilla launch points toward an add-on, a dependency, or a configuration interaction rather than proving that the base installation is defective.

3. Repair or verify the installation
Use the repair or file-verification command in the launcher that owns your copy. In Steam, open Library, right-click Fallout 4, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before starting the game. Some local configuration files may fail verification normally; Bethesda advises not to manually alter those files merely because the check reports them.
4. Clear Steam launch options
In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose General, and remove text from Launch Options. A stale command, an experimental flag, or an option copied from an old guide can cause startup crashes. Test the normal launch path first; add no flags back until the unmodified game is stable.
5. Use administrator mode only as a targeted test
Bethesda lists running the game and launcher as administrator among crash checks. Try that once when permissions are suspected, then restore normal launch behavior if it changes nothing. Permanent elevation can mask the real cause and complicate access to user files, so it should not be your default fix.
6. Apply the Weapon Debris workaround when it fits
Bethesda documents a specific crash associated with Weapon Debris set to High or Ultra. In the Fallout 4 launcher, open Options, select Advanced, and set Weapon Debris to Medium or Off. This is a known issue, not an explanation for every crash. Bethesda’s support article described a future fix, so check the live patch notes for its current status rather than assuming that the workaround is permanent.
7. Re-test the original trigger
After each change, reproduce the same action that caused the crash: launch to the menu, load the affected save, enter the same settlement, or open the Creations menu. If the crash returns only when a particular add-on is enabled, inspect that add-on’s compatibility and load order instead of repeatedly repairing the base game.

Black screen on PC: checks that distinguish display problems from crashes
A black screen can mean that Fallout 4 is running but using the wrong display path, or that it failed before rendering. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the PC against Bethesda’s minimum requirements and install the current GPU driver.
- Disable Creations and other mods, then test a clean launch.
- On a system with more than one GPU, open your operating system’s graphics settings or GPU control panel and confirm that Fallout 4 is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Check whether antivirus or endpoint-security software is blocking the game or launcher. Use the product’s documented game exception process only if you understand the security trade-off, and remove a temporary exception if it does not help.
- Verify that the game and its launcher are installed on the same drive, as Bethesda recommends for this symptom.
- Repair or verify the game files, then start with the launcher’s automatically detected video settings instead of a custom resolution or mode.
These are troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed causes. If audio continues while the display is black, focus first on GPU selection, display mode, and driver state; if the process closes, return to the crash sequence.
What do I do if Fallout 4 is running poorly on my PC?
For low frame rate, hitching, or stutter, restore a known baseline before tuning individual options. Bethesda recommends restoring the video options detected by the Fallout 4 launcher, lowering graphics quality or resolution, closing other software, updating the GPU driver, resetting INI files when configuration changes may be involved, and trying borderless windowed mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Restore the launcher’s detected defaults
Open the Fallout 4 launcher rather than launching directly into the game and use its automatic graphics detection or restore-defaults control. This removes an extreme resolution, quality preset, or unsupported option from the diagnosis. Record the current settings first if you want to return to them later.
2. Reduce the heaviest settings in a controlled order
Lower the overall quality preset or resolution, then test the same location. If performance improves, raise one setting at a time until you find the limit. Do not change several options simultaneously; that prevents you from identifying whether resolution, a particular effect, or a background process was responsible.
3. Close competing software
Exit browsers with heavy tabs, recording tools, overlays, launchers, and other applications that consume CPU, memory, disk, or GPU time. Re-test after a clean reboot if the stutter is intermittent. This step is reversible and provides more useful evidence than buying hardware before measuring the workload.

4. Update the GPU driver and check hardware headroom
Use the graphics manufacturer’s current driver and compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, and free storage with Bethesda’s published requirements. Meeting the minimum does not mean that high resolution, extensive Creations, or modern visual mods will run smoothly; it only establishes a baseline for the unmodified game.
5. Reset INI files only when configuration is suspect
Custom INI edits can cause both stutter and unexpected rendering behavior. Back up your INI files, restore them to defaults through the launcher’s reset process or by replacing them with fresh defaults, and test before reapplying tweaks. Keep a copy of any working changes so you can identify the setting that reintroduces the problem.
6. Compare borderless and windowed modes
Try borderless windowed mode as a reversible comparison with exclusive fullscreen. If one mode eliminates hitching, leave other settings unchanged and use that result to narrow the display or driver interaction. A mode change is a diagnostic, not proof that the monitor or GPU needs replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do I do if everything is moving too fast in Fallout 4 on PC?
When the simulation, animation, or menus run too fast or too slowly, check refresh rate and frame limiting before changing hardware. Bethesda identifies refresh rate, drivers, and Creations as possible causes and warns that uncapping the game through iPresentInterval can produce this symptom.
Use a 60 fps cap and default settings first
Restore the launcher’s default video configuration and use a 60 fps cap while testing. Disable Creations and custom mods, update the graphics driver, and remove any frame-rate tool or launch option that bypasses the normal limit. Re-test at the same refresh rate; changing several limits at once hides the cause.
Match the documented refresh-rate values
Bethesda’s support guidance documents iPresentInterval value 1 for a 60 Hz display and value 2 for a 120 Hz display. For a monitor above 120 Hz, it recommends setting the desktop display to 120 Hz while playing. These values describe Bethesda’s documented configuration and are not a universal prescription for every modded setup.

If you edit an INI file to inspect or change iPresentInterval, back up the file first and make one change at a time. Editing configuration can affect other behavior, and a later launcher reset may overwrite the change. If speed remains wrong with default settings, no Creations, and a supported refresh rate, test the current driver and verify the game files before attempting further INI edits.
Mods, Creations, and configuration: a safe isolation method
Add-ons are a frequent source of interactions because they can alter archives, scripts, textures, frame limits, or the Creations menu itself. Use a staged process:
- Write down the active Creations, manually installed mods, load order, and custom INI changes.
- Disable all Creations and remove custom mods temporarily.
- Launch, load a known save, and reproduce the symptom.
- If the clean game works, re-enable add-ons in small groups, testing the same trigger after each group.
- When the problem returns, narrow that group to one add-on or configuration change and check its current compatibility information.
Do not overwrite a stable save repeatedly while experimenting. Keep a clean test save and restore your backup configuration before returning to a heavily modded playthrough.
Choose the least invasive fix that answers your question
| Symptom | First reversible test | Next evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Launch or in-game crash | Disable Creations, verify files, clear Steam launch options | Version, launcher, crash trigger, and whether Weapon Debris was High or Ultra |
| Black screen | Confirm high-performance GPU, same-drive installation, and clean add-on test | Whether audio continues and whether the process remains open |
| Low frame rate or stutter | Restore detected defaults, lower resolution, close background software | Settings changed, location tested, driver version, and whether borderless mode differs |
| Game runs too fast or slowly | Use default settings, a 60 fps cap, and a supported refresh rate | Display Hz, iPresentInterval value, driver state, and active Creations |
This order favors changes that are easy to undo and that produce useful diagnostic information. Hardware replacement is not an appropriate first response when a clean launch, default settings, or a driver check has not yet been tested.
When to escalate the problem
After completing the relevant branch, gather the facts a support technician needs: exact platform and store, installed game version, Windows version, GPU and driver version, whether the PC uses multiple GPUs, active Creations or mods, custom INI edits, the original trigger, and the tests that changed the result. Include whether file verification reported configuration files and whether you left those files untouched, as Bethesda advises.
If the issue began after the August 18, 2026 update, state that explicitly and identify whether you are on Steam, Microsoft Store, or another PC installation. The patch notes list targeted fixes, including the BA2 archive-limit increase and several platform-specific crashes, but they do not provide one post-update remedy for every installation. A precise version and reproducible trigger are more useful than repeatedly applying unrelated launch flags or deleting configuration files.
