Most electric-bike problems fall into two groups: an ordinary bicycle fault, such as a punctured tube or mis-seated wheel, and an electrical fault involving the battery, display, wiring, controller, or motor. Start with the lowest-risk external checks. Repair a tube only when the wheel and tire design make that practical; stop and use an authorized dealer or service center for a damaged battery, internal motor work, damaged wiring, critical error, or a fault that returns after the permitted checks.
The exact procedure depends on the motor location, wheel fastening, tire system, and drive-system brand. The steps below distinguish general bicycle work from brand-specific instructions so you do not apply a reset or wheel-removal method to the wrong e-bike.
Begin with a safe triage
Turn the e-bike off before inspecting a wheel, connector, or battery. Remove the key if the bike uses one, support the bike securely, and keep hands clear of a motor or drivetrain that could start unexpectedly. Do not open a battery, motor, controller, or sealed wiring component.

There is no reliable universal error-code list or reset sequence. A code, connector layout, battery latch, and wheel axle can differ even between models from the same manufacturer.

Fixing a flat tire
Identify the wheel and drive layout first
A flat is usually a normal bicycle tire repair, but a rear hub motor adds electrical and axle hardware. A mid-drive motor normally leaves the wheel itself conventional; a hub-drive motor places the motor in the front or rear hub. Before loosening anything, note whether the wheel has a motor cable, torque arm, special washers, or axle nuts, and photograph the order of those parts if you must remove them.
Switch the e-bike off and follow the bicycle maker’s wheel-removal instructions. Do not copy the axle-nut size or washer order from another bike. Park Tool notes that axle dimensions vary and that some e-bike axles require a wrench; a hub-drive wheel may need a box-end metric wrench. Tools for a tube-type tire
- Tire levers suitable for the rim and tire.
- A patch kit or a spare inner tube.
- A pump that fits the valve.
- The correct wrench or other wheel-removal tool for your bike, if the axle requires one.
Before buying a replacement tube, match both the tire size and valve type. A tube that fits the diameter but has the wrong width or valve will not be a safe substitute. Park Tool’s tire-and-tube procedure is available at this tire and tube guide.

- Turn the system off and release the brake or axle mechanism according to the bike manual.
- Remove the wheel without pulling on a motor cable or bending a brake rotor.
- Deflate the tube fully. Use tire levers only as needed to lift one bead over the rim; avoid pinching the tube.
- Remove the tube and inspect the inside of the tire casing, rim tape, and valve hole. Find and remove the object that caused the puncture before installing a repair.
- Patch the tube or install a correctly sized replacement. Check that the tube is not twisted and that the valve sits straight.
- Work the tire bead back onto the rim, keeping the tube inside the tire rather than under the bead.
- Inflate gradually and check that the bead is even all the way around. Use the pressure specified on the tire sidewall and in the bicycle maker’s instructions; the available guidance does not establish one universal e-bike pressure.
- Reinstall the wheel, close the axle or quick-release mechanism as specified, and verify that the wheel is centered and secure.
Rear hub-motor wheels need extra care
For a rear hub motor, the removal sequence can include disconnecting a motor cable, removing axle nuts, retaining washers, and a torque arm in a particular order. Keep every washer on the correct side and do not twist the cable at the axle. If the manufacturer does not provide a clear procedure, or if the cable, axle flats, torque arm, or connector is damaged, do not improvise roadside. Have a qualified bicycle technician handle the wheel.

Brake and wheel checks after installation
With a hydraulic disc brake, never squeeze the brake lever while the wheel is out. The pads can close and make wheel installation difficult. Park Tool explains this precaution and the wheel-installation checks at its wheel removal and installation guide.
After reinstalling the wheel, confirm that the axle is fully seated and tightened, the rotor is between the pads, and the motor cable is routed without rubbing or strain. Spin the wheel, apply the brake while stationary, and make sure braking feels normal. If the rotor rubs persistently, the wheel is loose, or the brake lever feels wrong, do not ride until the problem is inspected.
“My bicycle does not turn on”
Use the manual for the exact system and begin with checks that do not expose high-voltage or sealed components. Confirm that the battery is installed in the correct direction, fully latched or locked, and charged. Look for dirt, bent contacts, or visible damage at accessible connectors. Check that the display is fully seated in its mount and that any external display or controller wire is plugged in and not cut, pinched, or pulled out of its housing.
Bosch system on a Tern bike: the documented external sequence
Tern’s instructions apply specifically to Bosch-equipped Tern bikes, not to every e-bike. Follow the sequence in Tern’s Bosch troubleshooting article:

- Check that the battery is seated and locked in place.
- Check the battery’s charge level and inspect the visible battery connector area for damage or contamination.
- Check that the display is seated correctly and that its mount contacts are clean and aligned.
- Inspect accessible external wires between the display, controller, and other components for looseness or visible damage.
- If an error code appears, identify it in the Bosch error-code information rather than guessing at a reset.
- If the bike still will not start, contact an authorized dealer or Bosch service center.
Do not open the Bosch battery or motor to test a fuse, cell, or internal connector. Those parts require appropriate service equipment and procedures.
“Sometimes assist does not work or becomes unstable”
Intermittent assist can result from a battery that is not fully latched, a display or mount contact that is not seated, a loose external connector, a system lock, or a fault recorded by the drive system. It can also indicate internal wiring or motor trouble. Work from the outside in:
- Stop safely and note whether the display remains on, shuts off, or shows a warning.
- Record the exact code and the conditions when it appeared. Do not erase information before checking the manufacturer’s support page or manual.
- With the system off, check the battery latch, display mount, and accessible connectors. Re-seat only parts the manual identifies as user-removable; never force a plug or probe contacts with metal.
- Inspect external wires for cuts, crushing, abrasion, or a connector that moves when it should be fixed.
- Check whether the assistance mode has changed or whether a system lock is enabled.
- Test the bike only in a safe, low-speed area after the checks. If assist cuts out again, stop using the bike and arrange service.
An unstable motor response is not a reason to repeatedly disconnect the battery or ride until the problem “clears.” Repeated failure after the permitted checks points to a dealer-level diagnosis.

This wording is used in Shimano support material. On a Shimano-equipped bicycle, first read the displayed warning or error and check whether the electronic system lock is engaged. Shimano states that an engaged lock restricts power assistance and electronic shifting; disengage it through the system’s approved app or status controls.

For the listed power-assistance problem, Shimano’s FAQ suggests removing the battery, waiting a few seconds, and reinstalling it. Follow the exact battery-removal instructions for your bicycle, especially when the battery is integrated into the frame. The complete FAQ is at Shimano support.
- Turn the bicycle off.
- Check the system-lock status and disengage it if the manual or app shows that it is active.
- Remove and reinstall the battery only if the bicycle’s instructions permit the rider to do so.
- Wait a few seconds before reinstalling, then confirm the battery is latched securely.
- Power the system on and check the code or warning again.
- If assistance is still absent, contact the place of purchase, the manufacturer’s distributor, or an authorized dealer. Do not generalize this Shimano procedure to another drive-system brand.
How to interpret error codes without making the problem worse
An error code narrows the diagnosis, but it does not make every repair user-serviceable. Write down the code exactly, including letters, numbers, and whether it is accompanied by a flashing display or loss of shifting. Use the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for that model and region. A code that identifies a sensor, communication line, battery, or motor fault may require dealer software or a replacement part.
Avoid generic internet “reset” combinations unless the manufacturer documents them for your model. A reset can hide useful diagnostic information and does not repair a damaged cable, battery, or motor. If the code is marked critical, returns immediately, or appears together with heat, smoke, an odor, or abnormal noise, stop and arrange authorized service.
Battery warnings: when to stop immediately
Stop using a battery that leaks, smells unusual, is swollen, cracked, wet internally, or has other visible damage. Shimano advises moving a leaking or abnormally smelling battery away from flammable materials and contacting the place of purchase. Do not charge it, open it, transport it loose in a vehicle, or try to make it work by repeatedly reconnecting it.

Smoke or fire requires immediate attention to the manufacturer’s emergency instructions and local emergency services. Keep people away from the area and do not take risks to retrieve a charger or battery. A damaged battery can remain hazardous even when the display is off.
Internal battery faults, motor faults, damaged electrical wiring, and persistent critical errors belong with an authorized dealer or manufacturer service center. The same escalation applies when the only apparent fix would require opening a sealed enclosure.
Choose the right repair route
The following distinctions help decide whether a roadside repair is realistic or a service visit is safer.

Checks before riding after any repair
- The wheel is fully seated, the axle or nuts are tightened according to the bike instructions, and no washer or torque arm was omitted.
- The tire holds air and the bead is even; pressure follows the tire and bicycle maker’s specification.
- The brake lever was not accidentally closed while the wheel was out, and braking works without unusual rubbing or softness.
- The motor cable and other external wires are routed clear of the tire, rotor, chain, and moving suspension parts.
- The battery is latched, the display is secure, and no warning or error remains.
- A short, controlled test confirms normal braking and predictable assistance before normal riding.
If any check fails, park the bike. A correct diagnosis is more important than getting a disabled e-bike moving temporarily.
