If one 3DS screen is missing or taps do not register, check two separate things: the emulator’s screen layout and the way your computer or device sends input to the emulated bottom screen. In the documented Azahar Libretro core, you can configure both in its core options. The exact menus vary, so first identify whether you are using standalone Azahar, Azahar through Libretro/RetroArch, or an older Citra build.
First identify your emulator and frontend
Menu names and available controls are not necessarily the same across standalone Azahar, the Azahar core in Libretro/RetroArch, and older Citra builds. The detailed layout and touch controls below are documented for the Azahar Libretro core; do not assume those exact options or paths appear in every standalone application or version.
Azahar is the active project cited here. Citra’s FAQ is archived guidance dated March 4, 2024, not current Azahar documentation.

In the documented Azahar Libretro core, open its Layout options and choose a mode that suits how you want the displays arranged. The modes differ in whether both screens appear, their orientation, and their relative size.

If one screen appears to be missing
- Check whether Single Screen Only is selected. If you expect both displays, switch to Default Top-Bottom, Large Screen/Small Screen, or Side by Side.
- If you selected a large/small arrangement, check Prominent Screen. It may be enlarging the screen you were not looking for.
- Adjust Large Screen Proportion if the smaller display is difficult to see or the size difference is uncomfortable.
- If both screens are present but awkwardly placed or clipped, review orientation and window sizing in the frontend you are actually using. The documented core options do not establish one universal standalone menu path for every operating system.
Fix taps that do not register
The documented Azahar Libretro core separates Mouse Touchscreen from Touch Support. Enable the option that corresponds to the input your host device provides: test mouse input on a computer, or touch-device input on a touchscreen device. Aim at the emulated bottom screen, which is the 3DS touchscreen.
Check the pointer’s position
- Confirm the bottom screen is visible in the selected layout.
- Test a tap or click within the displayed bottom-screen area, not the top screen or the surrounding window.
- If you recently changed layout, scaling, or orientation, test again: those changes can affect where the bottom screen appears relative to your pointer.
If input still does not work
- Verify that the enabled core option matches the input source: mouse for mouse input, or touch support for touchscreen-device input.
- Disable and re-enable the relevant option, then test the bottom screen again.
- If the frontend applies core settings only after reloading, restart the core and retry. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix documented for every frontend.
Pointer scaling and mapping can depend on the frontend and platform. The available documentation does not establish a single fix for every device.

When to investigate a game-specific fault instead
If both screens display correctly and work in other games, but one title alone freezes or crashes, further screen-layout changes are unlikely to address the underlying issue. Compatibility can vary by game.

The archived Citra FAQ recommends collecting a log that includes hardware, configuration, emulator version, and GPU-driver details when investigating a problem. Treat that as legacy Citra guidance, not a current Azahar procedure; consult the troubleshooting documentation or support channel for your exact build.

Keep physical 3DS touchscreen problems separate
If taps fail on an actual 3DS console, that is a hardware touchscreen issue—not an emulator input-mapping problem. Nintendo’s 3DS manual discusses checking a fitted protective sheet and looking for dirt or trapped air. Those physical-console checks do not apply to virtual touch input, which depends on the host device and emulator configuration.

A controller may help with ordinary game buttons, but it does not replace the layout settings or repair a misplaced mouse or touch mapping. A stylus, external touchscreen, or replacement console screen is likewise not a standard solution to an emulated screen-layout or input-configuration issue.
