Start with the game’s own update path before changing hardware or buying software. On Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix provides a free update for the Switch edition that improves the presentation and adds a choice between prioritizing frame rate and graphics. On Windows PC, first compare your system with Steam’s published requirements for the game. These checks separate an outdated installation or unsupported configuration from a symptom that needs platform support; no official source establishes one universal fix for every stutter, crash, or display fault.
Use this triage order first
Identify the platform, confirm the installed version is current, and describe the symptom precisely. “The game looks soft,” “the frame rate feels uneven,” “the update will not download,” and “the game crashes” are different problems with different evidence. Use the first action in this table, then continue to the platform-specific section.

Identify the installation before changing settings
- Write down the platform and edition. Record Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 using the Switch edition, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam on Windows, or Microsoft Store on Windows. The content is the same across platform editions, while graphical presentation varies with each platform’s specifications.
- Check the installed version. Use the platform’s software-update or update-history command for the game. If the displayed number differs from a current platform notice, let the platform finish its update before diagnosing performance.
- Classify the symptom. Note whether the problem is image clarity, motion or frame-rate consistency, a failed download, a crash, a black screen, or visual artifacts. Record whether it appears in menus, during gameplay, after waking the console, or only in a particular area.
- Record what changed. Include the date the problem began, whether it followed an update, and whether it occurs every time. This information is more useful to support than a general statement that the game is “laggy.”
Do not assume that a hardware purchase, replacement part, accessory, cleanup utility, or unofficial modification is an established remedy. The reviewed official material does not connect any particular product or tweak to a fix for this game.

Nintendo Switch 2: install the free performance update
Download the patch
Square Enix’s instruction is direct: connect the Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet and download the patch. From the console HOME screen, highlight the installed game and use its software-update command; allow the download and installation to complete before launching the game again. If the console offers more than one update source, choose the internet option rather than relying on an older local copy.

The update applies to players using the Nintendo Switch version on Switch 2. Nintendo’s product listing confirms that the update is available to those players. It is a free update, not a separate game purchase.
Choose the behavior you want
After the update is installed, use the added in-game or platform-presented choice to prioritize frame rate or graphics. Select the frame-rate priority when smoother motion matters most; select graphics priority when image detail matters more. Square Enix describes the result as graphical improvements that make the game appear sharper and smoother, but it does not publish a universal resolution, frame-rate ceiling, or scene-by-scene result for each option.
Do not confuse compatibility with the update
Nintendo’s listing has a general compatibility field stating “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That compatibility statement and the separately described Switch 2 enhancement are different pieces of information. Compatibility does not mean the enhancement is already installed. Confirm that the update has actually downloaded before judging the image or motion quality.

The update does not establish that every display will look identical or that every scene will maintain a particular frame rate. Television processing, the selected priority, and the console’s operating conditions can affect perception. If the same symptom remains after the update and after testing both priorities, document the symptom and version rather than assuming a numerical performance target that Square Enix has not published.

Switch download and storage failures
Square Enix’s undated game FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists the following free-space figures. They are requirements stated by the publisher and may change on a live store page, so verify the current listing when you install or update.

If a Switch download fails despite enough space
Square Enix’s support index includes a specific question about being unable to download the game despite having the recommended 6.9 GB free. The index does not expose the answer. Therefore, do not present a particular cache-clearing step, card replacement, or network workaround as publisher-confirmed. Check the live platform download status, confirm that the required space is still available, and open the detailed Square Enix support article or contact support if the failure persists. Include the exact error text and the amount of free storage in your request.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
For these consoles, begin with the built-in update command and wait for the installation to finish before testing the game. Square Enix’s May 23, 2025 notice lists version 1.1.0.0 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. That number is a historical version record, not a claim that it remains current in 2026.
If the console reports that the game is current but the problem continues, capture the platform, version shown by the console, symptom, and whether it occurs before or after loading a save. Official material does not provide a current console known-issues list or a universal remedy for crashes, artifacts, or persistent stutter, so use the platform’s support route and Square Enix support rather than relying on an unverified tweak.

Windows PC: compare the system with Steam’s requirements
Steam lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 64-bit form and DirectX 12 as the operating environment. It also publishes targets for a 1280×720, lowest-preset, 60-FPS experience at minimum and a 1920×1080, highest-preset, 60-FPS experience at recommended settings. These are store-published targets, not a performance guarantee for every driver, display, background process, or game scene.

A practical PC check
- Confirm the operating environment. Verify that Windows is a supported 64-bit edition and that DirectX 12 is available. A 32-bit installation or an older graphics API does not match the published environment.
- Compare each component, not just the processor. Check the exact CPU model, installed RAM, GPU model, and free storage against the table. A system can meet the CPU line while falling short on graphics memory or available disk space.
- Interpret the preset targets correctly. If the machine is near the minimum line, use the minimum target as a diagnostic baseline: 1280×720 and the lowest preset. A system at or above that line is not promised to hold 60 FPS in every situation. If the machine is near the recommended line, the 1920×1080/highest/60-FPS description is still a target rather than a guarantee.
- Check the installation’s version through the store. The May 23, 2025 Square Enix notice lists Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows at version 1.2.0.0. Use the live store update history to determine whether a newer build is available instead of treating that dated number as current.
- Separate performance from display output. If the game is smooth but the image is wrong, record the desktop resolution, in-game resolution or preset, display connection, and whether the issue appears in screenshots. If both motion and image quality are affected, report both symptoms rather than calling the entire problem “low FPS.”
Steam’s game support page directs players to Square Enix Customer Support. When contacting support, include the complete hardware list, Windows version, DirectX status, store edition, installed version, free space, and a reproducible description of the problem.

The image looks blurry or less detailed
On Switch 2, install the free update first and test the graphics-priority option. Square Enix promises a sharper presentation but does not specify a fixed output resolution. On PC, compare the active resolution and preset with Steam’s published target you are testing; do not infer a hardware failure solely from a difference between a 720p minimum target and a 1080p recommended target.

On Switch 2, test the frame-rate-priority option added by the update. Note whether the unevenness is constant or limited to particular scenes. On PC, record the resolution, preset, and observed behavior, then compare the system with the minimum and recommended hardware rather than assuming that the store’s 60-FPS target is a guaranteed cap or floor.

Black screens, crashes, or visual artifacts
The official sources reviewed do not establish a single cross-platform fix for these symptoms. First confirm that the game is updated, then preserve the exact error message, platform, version, and reproduction steps. Avoid presenting community configuration files or unofficial modifications as publisher-verified solutions. If the fault remains on a supported configuration, send the collected details to the relevant platform support channel or Square Enix Customer Support.
Version numbers: use them as dated evidence
Square Enix’s update notice dated May 23, 2025 records the following versions:

A version mismatch is actionable: finish the available update and retest. A matching version does not prove that the installation is free of every problem, because the official notice does not provide a complete current known-issues list or measured performance results for every platform.
Protect saves while troubleshooting
Square Enix’s FAQ states that each account can have nine save files, plus one autosave and one quick save. Before deleting data, reinstalling, or changing storage, make sure you understand which save slots are being removed and retain any platform-supported backup. Do not use a reinstall as a first response to a display preference problem; update and identify the symptom before taking an irreversible step.
When the documented steps do not solve it
Escalate a persistent problem with a concise record:
- Platform and edition, including whether a Switch 2 is running the Switch version.
- Installed version and the date you checked it.
- Symptom category: clarity, motion, download, crash, black screen, or artifacts.
- Exact error text, if any, and the steps that reproduce it.
- For PC, 64-bit Windows version, DirectX 12 status, CPU, RAM, GPU, and free storage.
- For a download failure, the free-space figure shown by the platform.
- Whether the issue remains after the current platform update and, on Switch 2, after testing both priority options.
Use the platform’s official support workflow or Square Enix support. The available official material does not support promising a particular accessory, repair product, cleanup program, or unofficial modification as the cure. Treat the published requirements and dated version notice as diagnostic reference points, not as guarantees.
