Older PC games usually fail for one of three reasons: a Windows program is asking a newer operating system for behavior it no longer provides, a DOS game needs a DOS-compatible environment, or an adventure game requires a supported interpreter such as ScummVM. The quickest reliable fix is to identify the exact game release and symptom before changing settings.
Use native Windows troubleshooting for an older Windows executable, DOSBox for a DOS title, and ScummVM only when the game appears on its supported list and you have the required data files. Compatibility mode is a diagnostic tool, not a universal repair, and display, speed, installation, and sound problems each need a different path.
Start by identifying the game, release, and failure
Write down the title exactly as it appears on the box, disc, launcher, or store page. Record whether you are using original media, a digital re-release, a fan patch, or a later commercial update. Two releases with the same name can contain different executables, installers, copy protection, or patches, so a setting that works for one may not work for another.

- The installer will not start, stops with an error, or cannot write files.
- The game launches and immediately closes or crashes.
- You see a black screen, incorrect colors, a tiny image, stretching, flicker, or graphical artifacts.
- The game runs too slowly, too quickly, or with unstable timing.
- The game has no sound, distorted sound, or sound that disappears after changing display modes.
- The game starts, but saves, settings, or configuration changes do not persist.
Keep the original executable and installer unchanged until you have a backup. If you apply a patch, note its version and keep a copy of the unpatched files so you can undo the change.
Choose the correct compatibility path

Do not choose a tool solely because the game is old. A DOSBox setup is not a general solution for a Windows game, and ScummVM only works with titles its project supports. Likewise, Windows compatibility options cannot supply a DOS environment or convert arbitrary game data into a supported ScummVM format.
Fix an older Windows game with low-risk steps
1. Look for a publisher update first
Microsoft’s guidance for older applications recommends checking the publisher for an update before using the compatibility troubleshooter. Search the publisher’s support pages for the exact release, patch level, and Windows version. A release-specific patch can address installer logic, copy-protection checks, obsolete video code, or a known crash more directly than a generic operating-system setting.

- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Choose the game from the list, or select the option to locate it if it is not shown.
- Follow the prompts to test recommended settings. If the game works, let Windows save the tested configuration; if it does not, report the failure rather than assuming the setting is a fix.
The troubleshooter is useful because it tests behaviors that often differ between legacy programs: display drawing, color handling, and assumptions about older versions of DirectX or Windows. It cannot repair every missing component, incompatible installer, or defective game patch.
3. Test executable compatibility settings one at a time
For a game-specific test, right-click the game’s main executable, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and change one setting before launching the game again. Keep a note of every change. Testing one option at a time makes it possible to identify which behavior changed and to revert cleanly.
Do not treat compatibility mode as a cure for missing DLL errors or incorrect colors. PCGamingWiki’s compatibility guidance specifically warns that those settings do not solve every failure class. If Windows reports a missing DLL, first check the game’s official update or documentation. Avoid downloading individual DLL files from random sites; an incorrectly matched or modified library can create a security risk and a new crash.

4. Update device drivers when the game launches with glitches
If the game opens but has minor graphical or input problems, Microsoft advises updating device drivers through Windows Update. Install available updates, restart Windows, and retest before adding more compatibility changes. Driver updates can alter rendering behavior, so record the date and keep your previous troubleshooting notes.

Diagnose black screens, colors, scaling, and artifacts separately
A black screen is not the same problem as wrong colors, an image that is stretched, or flickering sprites. Identify what happens immediately before the display fails: startup logo, menu, transition to fullscreen, or loading a saved game. That point often indicates whether the issue is a renderer, a display mode, or a game-specific patch.
Black screen or immediate loss of video
- Test the game in a window if it offers a windowed option. A window can show whether the program is rendering while fullscreen switching fails.
- Use the publisher’s release notes or a title-specific compatibility page for renderer and resolution requirements.
- Try the Windows compatibility troubleshooter before stacking multiple manual settings.
- If the game is a DOS title, stop applying Windows executable settings and move to DOSBox.
Incorrect colors or legacy color modes
Some older programs expect 8-bit or 16-bit color behavior that modern desktops handle differently. Microsoft’s compatibility documentation includes targeted fixes for legacy color modes and display drawing. Apply only the setting that matches the symptom, and remove it if the game becomes less stable.
Scaling, fullscreen, and window switching
Modern monitors may expose resolutions and refresh rates the game never expected. If the game is usable in a window but fails when switching to fullscreen, keep it windowed while you check the game’s own configuration and release notes. Scaling can make a low-resolution image appear soft or unusually small; that is a presentation issue, not proof that the executable is incompatible.
Windows 11 windowed-game optimization
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games, but this control is specifically for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window modes. It is not a universal “old game compatibility” switch.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game in the app list. Add its executable if necessary.
- Open the game’s graphics options and change Optimizations for windowed games for that app.
- Restart the game and compare the exact symptom, such as flicker or frame pacing.
If the title uses another graphics API, this setting may have no effect. Do not infer that a failed toggle means the game needs new hardware.

Run DOS games through DOSBox
DOSBox recreates an MS-DOS-compatible environment, including sound, input, graphics, and basic networking. It is designed for many classic DOS games that do not run correctly as ordinary Windows programs. Use a maintained DOSBox release and consult its current documentation rather than copying an old installer version from an outdated guide.
Prepare the game folder
Install or copy the game into a dedicated folder whose path is easy to type, such as C:GamesTITLE. Preserve the game’s directory structure. If the game came on several disks, follow its documentation for copying or mounting the required files; do not assume that copying only the main EXE is sufficient.
Mount and launch the game
- Start DOSBox.
- Mount the folder that contains the game as a DOS drive. For example:
mount c C:Games
c:The line breaks above represent the commands entered separately: mount c C:Games, then c:, then cd TITLE, followed by the launch file documented by the game. The file may instead be a BAT or COM program, so use the game's instructions rather than guessing a filename.
When DOSBox starts but the game behaves badly
- Check the game's own documentation for required sound, MIDI, video, or memory settings.
- Use DOSBox's performance controls when timing is too slow or too fast, but change one control at a time.
- Expect variation between titles. DOSBox documentation notes that not every game runs smoothly, so a single performance value cannot be prescribed for all games.
- Check file attributes if the game cannot save settings or games. Files marked read-only can cause launch, configuration, or save problems.
If a copied game remains read-only, clear that attribute on the game files you are allowed to modify, then test saving again. Keep a backup before changing attributes on an original archive.
Use ScummVM only for supported adventure games
ScummVM is an interpreter for specific supported adventure games; it is not a general launcher for every old Windows or DOS title. Open the project's compatibility list and confirm the exact game, edition, and required data files before troubleshooting.
Provide the correct data files
ScummVM generally needs the game's data files, not the original setup executable. Point ScummVM at the directory containing those data files. If the title has several editions, use the file set that matches the entry in the compatibility list. A successful installation program does not prove that ScummVM has the files it needs.

Investigate missing sound
Sound support can differ by title and version. Check the game's compatibility notes for supported speech, music, and effects before changing global audio settings. If the notes do not list a feature for your edition, a generic Windows sound fix is unlikely to add it.

Read the title's known-issues information and verify that your data files and platform match the documented conditions. If you report a reproducible problem, include the game version, platform, ScummVM version, and the exact point of failure. The ScummVM FAQ available for many older guides is not a substitute for the current compatibility list, so verify support against current project information.

Games that run too fast or too slowly
Timing problems are common when a game assumes hardware speeds that no longer exist. For DOS games, adjust DOSBox's emulation performance controls and test a repeatable scene, such as the same menu transition or movement sequence. Avoid copying a setting from an unrelated title: a value that helps one game can make another unplayable.
For a Windows game, first check for a publisher patch or title-specific compatibility note. A Windows compatibility checkbox is not a frame-rate limiter, and changing display settings will not necessarily correct game logic that is tied to CPU timing.
Games with no sound or distorted sound
Separate a missing audio device from a game that never supported the selected sound mode. In DOSBox, follow the game's documented sound-card configuration and test after each change. In ScummVM, consult the title's support notes. In a native Windows game, update drivers through Windows Update when the game otherwise launches, then check the release's audio requirements.
There is no universal audio toggle that fixes every older game. Record whether music, effects, speech, or all audio is missing; those details can point to different configuration paths.

Recover from common installation and save failures
The installer will not run
- Confirm whether the installer itself is a DOS program, a 16-bit Windows program, or a modern installer bundled with an older game.
- Look for an official update or re-release installer before changing system-wide settings.
- Do not replace system DLLs or download unverified copies to satisfy an error message.
- If the game is already installed, test the game's executable separately; an installer failure and a runtime failure are different problems.
The game launches but cannot save
Check that the game directory and its files are writable. In DOSBox, read-only attributes can prevent settings and saves from being written. For a Windows game, verify that the account running the game has permission to write to its save location and that security software is not blocking the operation. Make a backup of existing saves before changing permissions or moving files.
A patch made the problem worse
Restore the backed-up executable and data files, remove the patch's compatibility setting, and retest the original release. Then verify that the patch matches the exact edition and language of the game. Keep a written record of the working combination instead of applying several patches at once.
A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
- Inventory the release: title, edition, media or store source, patch level, Windows version, and installation folder.
- Classify the runtime: native Windows, DOS, or a ScummVM-supported adventure game.
- Describe one symptom: installation, launch, display, speed, sound, input, or saving.
- Apply the lowest-risk matching step: publisher update, Windows troubleshooter, DOSBox setup, or ScummVM compatibility check.
- Change one setting: write down the old value, the new value, and the result.
- Retest a repeatable action: the same startup screen, menu, scene, sound effect, or save operation.
- Undo unrelated changes: if the symptom changes, keep only the setting that addresses it.
- Escalate with precise details: provide the exact release, runtime, platform, versions, and reproducible steps when consulting a title-specific support page or project forum.
This process prevents a common failure mode: applying a display fix to a sound problem, a Windows setting to a DOS game, or a generic emulator option to an unsupported adventure title.
What not to buy or change without title-specific evidence
The available guidance does not establish a controller, cable, adapter, graphics card, sound card, or new PC as a general compatibility fix. Start with software settings, updates, and the runtime appropriate to the game. Consider hardware only when the game's own requirements identify a concrete device limitation; age alone is not evidence that new hardware is needed.
