When co-op or matchmaking fails, identify the layer that is broken before changing settings. Check the game’s official service status first, record the exact error, confirm cross-play and privacy eligibility, test your local connection, and only then follow the title- and platform-specific NAT or firewall instructions. A publisher outage cannot be repaired from your router, and a port-forwarding recipe for one game can make another game’s network less secure without helping.
Start with the symptom, not the router
The same visible failure can have very different causes. An empty queue may be an intentional activity restriction, a failed invite may be a cross-play mismatch, and a disconnect may be a server outage or packet loss on your home link. Use the first check in this table before making changes:

1. Rule out a publisher outage or maintenance window
Open the publisher’s official service-status page and maintenance notices before restarting equipment or changing router security. Live-service games can reject logins, fireteam joins and matchmaking while authentication, regional services or game servers are offline. No setting on your console or PC can restore a service that the publisher has intentionally taken down.
Bungie’s Destiny support guidance identifies an offline game as a common reason for server errors. Ubisoft’s support article for The Division 2 error MIKE-01 defines the code as a lost connection to the servers and tells players to check for maintenance or an outage first. Treat those as examples of a general diagnostic rule, not as universal meanings for every game’s error code.

How to check efficiently
- Look at the game’s official status dashboard and the publisher’s official support or social channels for a current incident.
- Check whether the notice affects your region, platform or game mode; an incident can be partial rather than a total outage.
- Ask a friend on a different network whether the same service is failing for them. This is a clue, not a substitute for the official status page.
- If maintenance is confirmed, stop local troubleshooting and try again after the stated window. Repeated router changes during an outage can introduce a second problem without shortening the outage.
2. Capture the exact error before restarting
Write down the complete warning, code, platform and activity before you dismiss it. “Connection error,” “NAT unavailable” and a named code can refer to different failure points, and support teams use the exact text to select the correct procedure. Bungie documents separate disconnection codes in its network guide; Warframe describes NETWORK NOT RESPONDING as an unstable or slow path between the device and Warframe’s servers.
Record these details
- Game name, platform, edition and current version.
- The exact code or wording, including capitalization and punctuation.
- What you were doing: signing in, accepting an invite, entering a queue, loading a mission or returning to orbit.
- Whether every player is affected or only one account.
- Your connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), approximate time and region.
- Any recent changes to the router, ISP, console privacy settings or cross-play option.
Restart only where the game’s own instructions recommend it. Bungie’s server-issue guidance lists clearing a console or download cache and power-cycling a modem or router among possible attempts. These are troubleshooting actions, not guaranteed cures; perform them after recording the evidence so you can report whether they changed the symptom.
3. Confirm that the players are actually eligible to join
A healthy server and a working internet connection do not override a game’s social rules. Every participant must be online, running a supported version, allowed to receive invites and eligible for the same activity. Check the following on every account rather than only on the host.

- Install the same current game update. A pending patch can leave one player online but unable to join a session.
- Confirm that the activity supports your platform combination. Some modes use separate pools even when the game advertises cross-play.
- Make sure parental controls, privacy settings, blocked-player lists and platform-level “join” permissions allow the invitation.
- Use the game’s exact account identifier. Display names, suffixes and platform tags can matter more than a console or PC username.
- Check that neither account is suspended, restricted or still in a tutorial or mission state that prevents group play.
Cross-play is an eligibility switch, not a universal performance fix
Enable cross-play only when the players need it and when the title supports the desired combination. Disabling it can deliberately remove otherwise valid teammates from the pool; enabling it cannot make an unsupported platform combination work. If one player changes the setting, have everyone leave the fireteam or lobby and create it again so the game refreshes eligibility.

Destiny 2: activity-specific pools
Bungie’s Destiny 2 Cross Play Guide explains that matchmaking pools vary by activity. Competitive matchmaking separates console and PC pools, while noncompetitive activities match across available platforms. A console player who joins a fireteam containing a PC player can therefore see a different competitive pool than when playing alone. The guide also states that Xbox and PlayStation players with cross-play disabled cannot join a fireteam with someone whose cross-play is enabled, even when both are on the same console family. These are Destiny 2 rules; do not transfer them to another looter shooter without checking that game’s current guide.
Warframe: identity and cross-platform squads
Warframe’s Cross Platform Progression Guide says that supported platforms can join squads and use public matchmaking when cross-platform play is enabled. Its invitation process uses game-specific identity suffixes and platform details. If a friend cannot be found, copy the identifier exactly as shown in Warframe rather than relying on a similarly named platform account.
4. Isolate your local connection
Once service status and eligibility are clear, test the path from your device to the game. The goal is to distinguish unstable Wi-Fi, competing traffic, a failing router or an upstream ISP issue from a game-specific problem.
Perform a wired comparison
- Connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, if the layout permits.
- Keep the same game, account, activity and time of day.
- Repeat the invite or matchmaking attempt and compare disconnects, latency and queue behavior with the Wi-Fi result.
- After the test, restore Wi-Fi if necessary and note whether the symptom followed the connection type.
Bungie recommends wired play because Wi-Fi can introduce signal-strength and stability problems. An Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic tool using your existing router and device; it cannot repair an outage, a blocked account, an incompatible cross-play setting or an upstream ISP fault.

Reduce competing traffic for the test
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams and software updates on the same network. Ask other users to avoid bandwidth-heavy activity for a few minutes, then retry. This does not prove that bandwidth is the root cause, but it removes a common source of congestion and makes the comparison meaningful.
Compare with other services
Test another online game or a streaming service from the same device and network. If several services fail, investigate the router, modem and ISP rather than treating one game’s error as unique. Warframe’s network guidance specifically suggests contacting the ISP when similar trouble affects other games or streaming services.
Restart equipment in a controlled order
- Exit the game and shut down the affected device cleanly.
- Power off the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, then restart the modem and allow it to reconnect before starting the router.
- Wait until the router’s normal internet indicators return, restart the device and test once.
A restart can clear a transient state; it does not change service status, account permissions or a persistent NAT design. If the problem returns immediately, keep the original error and timing for the next diagnostic step.

5. Understand strict NAT before changing router settings
NAT (Network Address Translation) lets multiple devices share an internet connection. In peer-to-peer or hybrid matchmaking, a restrictive NAT can limit which other players can establish a session with you. Gearbox’s Borderlands network guidance describes strict NAT as limiting the peers a player can connect to and lists router firmware, reboots and ISP-side NAT among possible factors.

Use the game’s documented order of operations
- Update the router’s firmware according to its manufacturer instructions.
- Confirm that the router is not reporting a failed internet connection or a second router creating nested NAT.
- Try the game’s recommended UPnP procedure if the title and platform support it. UPnP allows the game or platform to request mappings automatically, but behavior varies by router.
- Only if the official guide calls for it, configure the exact ports and protocol for that game and platform. Record every change so it can be reversed.
Port numbers, protocols and required services are not universal across looter shooters. Never copy a port list from a different title, and do not assume a PC procedure applies to a console. Do not make DMZ mode or firewall deactivation a routine fix: both increase exposure and should be considered only under explicit, current guidance from the game’s publisher and your platform provider.
When multiple consoles or PCs share one network
Some games need separate session mappings for each device. Bungie’s advanced network guidance covers cases with multiple consoles on one network; follow its current instructions for the exact platform combination rather than improvising duplicate rules. Test one device at a time first so you know whether the problem is per-device or appears only when another player joins.
Recognize carrier-grade or upstream NAT
If the router’s internet-facing address is itself private, or the ISP places customers behind carrier-grade NAT, local port forwarding may have no effect. Ask the ISP whether your connection uses upstream NAT and whether it offers a supported public-address option. A home router cannot create an inbound path that the ISP does not provide.

Game-specific examples and what they teach
Destiny 2 server errors and disconnections
Destiny support recommends checking service status, using a wired connection where possible, reducing competing network use and following its cache, modem and router power-cycle suggestions. Its network guide separates latency, packet loss, UPnP, NAT and port-forwarding cases. Use the code and the activity to choose the relevant section; do not infer that every Destiny code means your router is at fault.

The Division 2 MIKE-01
Ubisoft defines MIKE-01 as a lost connection to The Division 2 servers. The first action is therefore to check maintenance or an outage. If the status page is clear, continue with the game’s current platform-specific connection steps and include the MIKE-01 code when contacting support. A generic “open ports” list from another game is not a substitute.
Warframe NETWORK NOT RESPONDING
Warframe uses this warning for an unstable or slow network between the device and Warframe servers. Check local stability, compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi and test other services. Warframe support also mentions an IPv6 test as part of diagnosis; treat that as a controlled, game-specific experiment and restore your normal configuration if it does not help. Contact the ISP when the same instability appears outside Warframe.
Warframe: several devices on one network
Warframe documents a particular UDP-port conflict when multiple computers or consoles share one network and provides a title-specific port-change procedure. This is not evidence that every game has the same conflict. Use the exact Warframe instructions only when multiple devices fail in the documented pattern, and do not invent or reuse its port values for another title.

Gearbox’s Borderlands: General Network Troubleshooting article was published April 14, 2025 and updated September 17, 2025. It discusses device checks, router firmware, NAT behavior and port guidance. Because those instructions are version- and platform-dependent, open the current Borderlands support page and follow its stated sequence rather than applying a remembered setting from an older release.
Use a decision path instead of random fixes
- Service status is degraded: save the error, wait for restoration and retest. Do not modify the router while the incident is active.
- Status is normal and one friend cannot join: compare versions, platform eligibility, cross-play, privacy, blocked lists and the game’s account identifier.
- Status is normal but every queue is slow: check whether the activity has a restricted pool, then compare another activity before changing network settings.
- Only Wi-Fi sessions disconnect: run the Ethernet comparison, reduce competing traffic and inspect signal placement or interference.
- Several games or services fail: restart and inspect the modem/router, then contact the ISP if the pattern persists.
- Only one title fails for several devices: read that game’s multi-device and NAT guidance; a title-specific conflict may be involved.
- A strict-NAT warning remains: follow the exact platform and game instructions, check for nested or carrier-grade NAT, and escalate with your recorded results.
What to include when contacting support
Support can act faster when the report distinguishes a service incident from a local configuration. Include:
- Exact error code and a screenshot or transcript of the warning.
- Game version, platform model or PC operating-system version, region and activity.
- Account names or platform identifiers only through the publisher’s secure support form; do not post them publicly.
- Timestamp and time zone, whether maintenance was posted, and whether friends on other networks were affected.
- Wi-Fi versus Ethernet results, other services tested, router restart outcome and any NAT status shown by the platform.
- Every router or firewall change already made, including changes you have reverted.
Use the support page for the actual game and platform. Error labels, matchmaking architecture, port requirements and cross-play rules are maintained independently by each publisher and can change with updates.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Starting with port forwarding: it cannot fix a publisher outage or a privacy restriction and can create an unnecessary security exposure.
- Assuming a long queue means a broken internet connection: activity-specific pools can be small by design, especially when cross-play or competitive rules separate players.
- Changing cross-play on only one account: the resulting eligibility mismatch can make a previously valid fireteam fail.
- Using a code from memory: similarly named errors have different meanings across games; copy the current wording.
- Testing only one device: a problem affecting every device points toward shared network conditions, while one failing device suggests a local configuration.
- Leaving experimental settings enabled: restore IPv6, UPnP, firewall or port changes that were not part of the game’s documented solution.
- Buying hardware as a guarantee: an Ethernet cable can test Wi-Fi stability, but no cable, router or utility can resolve an account ban, unsupported platform combination or upstream outage.
How to know the problem is resolved
Retest the original action under the same conditions that produced the error: the same friend, activity and platform combination. A successful login does not prove that invites or matchmaking are fixed. Confirm that you can accept an invite, load into the intended activity and remain connected long enough to complete a short session. If only one activity still fails while others work, return to that game’s activity-specific eligibility and service notices instead of broadening router changes.
