If your Amazon Fire tablet will not get online, register to your Amazon account, or respond to Alexa, troubleshoot each issue separately. Start by identifying your tablet model and checking the Wi-Fi connection; then work through registration, Alexa compatibility, and smart-home controls. Save a factory reset for last because it erases downloaded content and deregisters the tablet.
Identify the tablet and the problem first
Fire OS menus and Alexa features vary by tablet model and generation. Find your model before following a model-specific instruction; Amazon’s Fire Tablet Quick Start Guides are organized by device. Then determine which symptom you have:
- Wi-Fi: The tablet cannot join a network or loses its connection.
- Registration: The tablet is online but will not register to your Amazon account.
- Alexa: Alexa is missing, does not respond to the wake word, or works only when opened manually.
- Smart-home control: Alexa works, but the Fire tablet’s Device Dashboard cannot control a connected product.
A tablet can connect to Wi-Fi without supporting every Alexa feature, so a successful internet connection does not prove that hands-free Alexa is available on your model.

Join the network
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap and hold the Wi-Fi button. On some older tablets, swipe down, tap Wi-Fi, then More Settings.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. Select the correct network. A lock icon means a password is required.
- Enter the network password carefully and tap Connect. If the network is a hotel, airport, or other public hotspot, complete its separate sign-in page. Open a simple page in Silk or tap the connected network’s sign-in control if the portal does not appear; the provider may require a PIN, voucher, or one-time password.
Amazon’s Fire tablet internet connection instructions describe these connection steps.

Work through connection failures in order
- Check the network and password. Confirm the network name and password, and try connecting another device to the same Wi-Fi. If multiple devices cannot connect, contact your internet service provider.
- Improve the signal. Move the tablet closer to the router and away from potential interference such as microwaves or baby monitors. Temporarily disconnect other Wi-Fi devices if the connection may be bandwidth-constrained.
- Restart the tablet and network equipment. Restart the tablet, reboot the modem and router, wait two minutes, and try connecting again.
- Add a hidden network manually. Select Add Network, enter the network name and password, open Advanced, choose the hidden-network option, and confirm. Menu wording may vary by software version.
- Reset the tablet’s network settings. Try Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset. The exact labels can differ across Fire OS versions.
- Install available software updates. Check for the latest software available for your tablet and install it if needed.
- Test with a phone hotspot. Connect the tablet to a smartphone’s personal hotspot. If it connects there, the problem is with the original network rather than the tablet, according to Amazon.
For Amazon’s full troubleshooting guidance, see Resolve Wi-Fi Connection Issues on Your Fire Tablet. If a tablet roams between 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or extender and mesh networks, Amazon says those networks need the same network name, security type, and password for roaming.
Why won’t my Fire tablet register to my Amazon account?
Registration can fail even after Wi-Fi is working. Amazon identifies device time, outdated software, account credentials, and selecting the wrong Amazon account among the issues to check.
- Confirm that the tablet is connected to Wi-Fi and that the time displayed on the device is correct.
- Install any available update using All Settings > Device Options > System Updates. Menu wording may vary by software version.
- Re-enter the Amazon account credentials, checking the password and the account you intend to use.
- If you use more than one Amazon account or are unsure of the credentials, test signing in with them in a browser on another device.
See Amazon’s Fire tablet setup instructions for its registration guidance.

Why doesn’t Alexa respond on my Fire tablet?
Check whether your model supports hands-free Alexa
Alexa hands-free support depends on the model generation. The Amazon support list accessed on October 9, 2026 includes these models; check Amazon’s current hands-free support list in case it changes:
| Tablet model | Generations listed for hands-free Alexa |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 10 | 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th |
| Fire HD 8 | 8th, 10th, and 12th |
| Fire HD 8 Plus | 10th and 12th |
| Fire 7 | 9th and 12th |
| Fire Max 11 | 13th |
Enable hands-free mode on a supported tablet
On a compatible tablet, enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode under Settings > Alexa, or use the Alexa Hands-Free icon in Quick Actions. If the setting or icon is missing, check the model against the current support list rather than treating the absence as a Wi-Fi problem.
Amazon notes that some tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off when the tablet is not connected to power. You can also hold the Home button to access Alexa outside Show Mode when hands-free is disabled. These behaviors are covered in Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.

Why can’t the Device Dashboard control my smart-home device?
Check the connection between the Fire tablet, Alexa, and the smart-home product rather than resetting the tablet immediately:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the product is compatible and appears in the Alexa app.
- Make sure the Fire tablet, Alexa app, and smart-home device use the same Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm that the tablet is registered to the same Amazon account as the Alexa app.
- Check that software is up to date and the smart-home device is powered on.
- If control relies on a skill, disable and re-enable that skill.
- Check profile restrictions: routines and camera access are unavailable from a secondary device profile or when parental controls are enabled.
If those checks do not solve the problem, restart both the tablet and the smart-home device. Amazon’s Device Dashboard troubleshooting instructions cover these checks.
When should you factory-reset a Fire tablet?
Reset only after the relevant network, registration, or Alexa troubleshooting steps fail. A factory reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, restores factory settings, and deregisters the tablet from the Amazon account. You must register it again afterward. Preserve anything you need and safely eject expandable storage if applicable.
Amazon’s cited route is swipe down twice > Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. Check the instructions for your exact model before proceeding: Factory Reset Your Fire Tablet.
