When a co-op session breaks, first identify which layer failed: voice chat, controller input, or the network path to the game. Write down the game, platform, exact error text, what still works, and whether every teammate is affected or only one person. Then make one change, retest, and record the result before moving to the next layer.

Start with three quick checks: can you hear ordinary game audio, does the controller work in the console or computer menus, and does the platform’s connection test reach its online services? Those answers usually tell you whether to inspect a headset setting, a pairing state, or the network.

Start with a ten-minute fault check

Do not begin by opening router ports or buying a headset. Co-op failures that look identical to players can have completely different causes. A muted microphone, an inactive game-chat channel, a controller paired to another device, and restrictive peer-to-peer networking all produce a “we cannot play together” report.

Record the symptoms before changing anything

  • Game title and edition, platform, and whether cross-play is enabled.
  • The exact wording of any error message or connection code.
  • Whether game audio, platform party chat, and in-game chat each work.
  • Whether the controller responds in system menus as well as inside the game.
  • Whether the problem affects every teammate or only one particular friend.
  • Whether the platform’s network test reaches online services and reports a NAT type or speed.

Have another player perform the same checks. If only one person fails, their device or network deserves priority. If everyone fails at once, check the game or platform service status and any game-specific maintenance notice.

Use the symptom to choose the first check

What you observe First check What it suggests
Game audio works, but nobody hears your microphone Mic mute state, selected input, microphone level, and chat channel Usually a local audio or chat-mode setting
You hear teammates, but they cannot hear you Your headset or controller mute switch and the input meter Input selection, permission, or a failed microphone path
Voice is stuck on “Connecting…” in Steam Selected devices, physical connections, and required outbound UDP access A Steam voice transport or firewall path may be blocked
Controller fails in a game but works in system menus Game controller layout, supported input mode, and the game’s settings Pairing is probably intact; the title may be rejecting or remapping input
Controller fails in menus and in the game Charge, pairing to the current device, USB test, and firmware A pairing, cable, software, or hardware problem
You can connect to some friends but not one specific friend Have both players run their connection tests and compare NAT results One side’s network may not accept the peer-to-peer path
Several multiplayer games fail on one console or network Platform connection test, router, and ISP or network administrator A local network or service-access problem rather than one game

Retest after every single change

Invite the same friend, use the same game mode, and repeat the same voice or controller test after each adjustment. Changing several settings at once hides the cause and makes it harder to undo a harmful change. A platform chat working while a game’s chat fails narrows the investigation toward that game’s voice settings or service, but it is a diagnostic clue, not proof of the cause.

Fix voice chat before changing network settings

Voice failures are often caused by the wrong input or output device, a physical mute switch, a lowered microphone level, or the wrong chat mode. Confirm those items locally before troubleshooting matchmaking or buying hardware.

Check the common causes on every platform

  1. Check the mute button on the headset, controller, console, and in-game overlay. A mute icon can appear in more than one place.
  2. Confirm that the intended microphone is selected as the input and that your headset or speakers are selected as output.
  3. Speak while watching the input meter, if the platform or game provides one. No meter movement means the selected path is not receiving a signal.
  4. Verify that you are in game chat rather than party chat, or vice versa. Some games let you change chat priority from an overlay.
  5. Check cross-play, communication, parental-control, and privacy settings when the game or platform exposes them. Titles use different labels and may apply their own restrictions.
  6. Disconnect and reconnect the headset firmly. Test a known-working headset or controller to separate the accessory from the console or computer.

A working platform party chat does not guarantee that a game will use the same channel. Conversely, a working microphone meter does not prove that the game has permission to transmit it.

PlayStation: verify output, input, and chat priority

On PlayStation, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the output device. Then open Settings > Sound > Microphone to select the input device and set the microphone level. The cited PlayStation guidance also includes device and audio settings for PS4, whose labels and menus differ from PS5.

Open the Control Centre or Game Base and inspect whether party chat or game chat has priority. If party chat is prioritized, teammates in the game’s channel may not hear you even though the platform reports a healthy microphone. Check the mute indicator in the same overlay and in the game itself before testing again.

Steam: check devices, connections, and the voice transport

In Steam’s voice settings, select the microphone you actually use and the playback device that should carry teammates’ voices. Some games change the active input when they launch, so open the game and check again. Inspect every plug, USB connection, and adapter for a loose or incomplete connection.

If Steam voice remains at “Connecting…”, Steam states that its voice feature uses WebRTC and needs outbound UDP access to remote ports 27014 through 27020, with responses allowed. This is a Steam-specific requirement; do not apply those ports to a console without evidence that the console or game uses the same service. If you are on a managed school, office, hotel, or shared network, ask the network administrator to verify the rule rather than making changes you cannot safely control.

Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat: separate system audio from participant volume

For Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat, first confirm that ordinary system audio is audible. If game or system sound works but a participant’s voice does not, check whether that participant’s voice volume was lowered in GameChat. Then continue with the connection checks in the next section. This distinction prevents you from treating a per-participant volume setting as a headset or router failure.

Why can’t I hear my friends in game chat?

Check the output device and chat channel first. If you can hear game effects but not people, inspect party-versus-game chat priority and the individual voice-volume slider. On PlayStation, verify Audio Output and Game Base priority; on Steam, verify the playback device; on Switch 2 GameChat, verify that the participant was not turned down. If platform party chat works while only the title’s chat fails, use the game’s support and status information because the game may impose separate voice or cross-play rules.

Why can my friends hear me but I can’t hear them?

Your input path is functioning, so focus on output selection, headset volume, and the channel carrying incoming voices. Confirm that the output is not set to a monitor, television, or another connected device and that the game has not assigned a separate voice volume. Test with platform party chat: if that also has no incoming audio, stay in the platform’s sound settings; if only game chat is silent, inspect the title’s voice options.

When a headset or microphone test fails

Try a known-working headset or controller before purchasing anything. A second accessory can reveal a damaged microphone or connector, but it cannot by itself prove that replacement hardware is necessary: wrong device selection, permissions, mute state, and game settings can produce the same symptom. If you eventually replace a headset, match its connector and feature support to the platform; USB, 3.5 mm, wireless, and console-specific models are not interchangeable in every setup.

Fix a controller that will not connect or respond

Controller pairing is separate from a game’s control layout. Establish a reliable connection to the current console, computer, or mobile device first; only then investigate remapping or game support.

Pair and test in the correct order

  1. Charge the controller or install fresh batteries, then remove it from any device it may still be trying to use.
  2. Put it into the platform’s pairing mode and pair it to the device running the co-op game, not to a nearby console or computer.
  3. Use a supported USB connection to test it directly. A cable test can distinguish wireless pairing trouble from a controller or platform fault.
  4. Check for a controller-software or firmware update through the platform’s official update route.
  5. Open the system menus and test sticks, buttons, and triggers there. If they work in menus but not in the game, inspect the game’s supported input mode and layout.
  6. If pairing still fails, follow the exact reset procedure for that controller model. Do not apply one model’s reset instructions to another.

A controller that works on one supported device may still have feature limitations on another. Check the model’s compatibility list rather than assuming that every button, motion feature, or wireless mode transfers between console, computer, and mobile.

PlayStation and DualSense details

Pair the controller with the PlayStation console or other device currently in use, then update device software where the platform offers it. PlayStation states that a DualSense can be paired with one PS5 console at a time and can work with certain computers and mobile systems; features available on those devices can differ from the PS5 experience.

For a connection problem, PlayStation’s support flow includes resetting the controller and reconnecting it with USB. Use the model-specific instructions and a supported USB connection. If the controller still fails in system menus after pairing, update, reset, and cable testing, move to PlayStation’s repair diagnostics rather than repeatedly changing the game’s control layout.

Other consoles and PC controllers

For a controller not covered by the PlayStation steps, use the manufacturer’s official page for its pairing mode, firmware-update route, and reset procedure. Avoid disassembling it. Test the controller in system menus or on another supported device before buying a replacement; a failure that follows the controller points in a different direction from a failure confined to one game or one USB port.

Why won’t my controller connect to my console or PC?

Start with charge and pairing to the device that is actually running the game. A controller can remain paired to another nearby device, appear connected but have no usable input, or need a software update. A direct supported USB test is the fastest separator: if USB works, revisit wireless pairing; if it fails in menus over both wireless and USB, use the model’s reset and repair path.

Diagnose connection and matchmaking problems

Connection quality and peer-to-peer reachability are different questions. A speed test can look acceptable while a NAT restriction prevents two players from establishing the route a game needs. Run the platform’s built-in test before changing router settings, and save the results.

Run the platform test and record its output

  • Whether the console or computer reaches platform services.
  • NAT type or grade, where the platform reports one.
  • Download and upload results shown by the test.
  • Any error code, sign-in failure, or service-availability message.

Games can use dedicated servers, relay services, or peer-to-peer sessions, so a platform NAT label is not a universal cross-platform scale. It is a clue about the platform’s own connection path.

Nintendo NAT guidance: what A, B, D, and F mean

Nintendo describes NAT A as the most favorable result for peer-to-peer connections and NAT B as compatible with most other NAT types. It warns that NAT D can make connections difficult and NAT F may prevent peer-to-peer connections. These grades and recommendations are Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance, not a universal rating that can be applied unchanged to PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or every game.

Nintendo’s troubleshooting flow includes a 3 Mbps decision point. Treat that number as a prompt used in Nintendo’s diagnostic process, not as a bandwidth guarantee for all co-op games. The same flow may ask you to compare the result with the game’s requirements or continue to network troubleshooting.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic

If the console supports a wired connection, test it with a known-good Ethernet cable. Nintendo specifically recommends trying another cable to check whether the original is damaged. A successful wired session points toward wireless interference, distance, or radio congestion; a failed wired session means the cable was not the only issue.

Improve wireless conditions without guessing

  1. Move the console closer to the router and remove obvious obstacles or nearby sources of interference.
  2. Power-cycle the modem and router, wait for the service lights to stabilize, and run the platform test again.
  3. Invite the same friend and repeat the co-op test.
  4. If the problem remains, have that friend perform the same test. A session that fails only with one person may require investigation on both networks.

Do not make advanced router changes simply because a game will not matchmake. If several games fail, contact the router manufacturer, ISP, or network administrator for configuration guidance. On a managed network, you may not have permission to alter NAT, firewall, or port rules.

Why can’t I join my friend’s co-op game?

Compare results rather than assuming the person who sent the invitation has the fault. If you can join other players but not this friend, ask both of you to run the platform test and compare NAT information, service reachability, and wireless or wired status. If every player is affected, check the game’s service status and platform access. If only one game fails while other multiplayer titles and platform voice work, use that game’s support channel and settings; the pattern points toward a title-specific service, privacy, cross-play, or matchmaking rule, but it still needs verification from the game maker.

Choose the right escalation path

Pattern after testing Next action
Only one game fails; other multiplayer games and platform voice work Check the game’s status page, voice, privacy, cross-play, and matchmaking settings, then use its support process.
Several games fail on one console or network Use the platform connection test, then contact the router maker, ISP, or network administrator.
Controller fails in menus or across supported devices after pairing, update, USB, and reset steps Use the platform’s repair or hardware diagnostic service.
System audio works, but platform or game chat does not Recheck selected channel, input and output devices, mute state, communication permissions, and the game’s own chat settings.
Only one teammate cannot hear or join Have that player repeat the same audio, controller, and connection tests; compare both sides before changing shared equipment.

A reusable retest checklist

Use this short checklist each time you return to the game:

  1. Name the exact failing function: incoming voice, outgoing voice, controller input, matchmaking, or session stability.
  2. Confirm what still works in system menus and platform services.
  3. Change one setting or connection at a time.
  4. Repeat the same co-op invitation and voice test.
  5. Record whether the result changed and undo a change that made the symptom worse.
  6. Escalate with the recorded game, platform, error text, NAT result, speed result, and affected-player pattern.

This evidence gives platform or game support something actionable: it shows whether the failure follows a device, a person, a network, or one title’s service.
