The right troubleshooting step depends on when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fails. A crash before the main menu, a freeze after the Sirene fight, uneven frame pacing, and consistently low average FPS are different symptoms; the available developer statements do not establish one cause or universal fix for all of them. First check the game’s published PC requirements, record your system and graphics settings, and reproduce the problem while changing one setting at a time.
Start by identifying what is happening
Before changing settings, describe the failure precisely. “It runs badly” does not tell you whether the game is closing, becoming unresponsive, briefly hitching, or simply rendering at a lower frame rate than you want. The distinction matters because Sandfall Interactive has published advice for particular crash cases, but that advice is not a general remedy for stuttering or low FPS.
- Crash on startup: The game closes, errors, or fails before you can reach normal gameplay.
- Crash or freeze at a repeatable point: The game fails during the same scene or after the same action. Note the scene and what you did immediately beforehand.
- Stuttering: Motion feels uneven or interrupted, even if the displayed average FPS seems acceptable. A short hitch and a sustained low frame rate are not the same observation.
- Low FPS: The game renders slowly for an extended period rather than only pausing intermittently. Record the resolution, preset, and frame-rate limit when you observe it.
Write down the game build and storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU and its installed driver version, GPU VRAM, system RAM, whether the game is on an SSD, resolution, graphics preset, upscaler and frame-generation settings, frame cap, and the exact point where the issue occurs. If the game displays an error, preserve the exact text. This record makes it possible to compare repeated tests instead of relying on memory.

Change one variable at a time
Use the same scene or repeatable action for each comparison. Change one setting, test again, and record whether the symptom changed. If you change the frame cap, resolution, preset, and frame generation together, you will not know which change mattered. A setting change that appears to help once is a clue to retest, not proof of a universal fix.

Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Steam’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 PC listing, accessed October 11, 2026, says an SSD is required and specifies 55 GB of available storage. It lists separate minimum and recommended hardware tiers with targets of 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings and 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings, respectively. Those are the store’s stated targets for those tiers—not guarantees for every scene, a different resolution, or other graphics settings.

Compare your actual parts and available memory with the relevant column rather than judging by a GPU model name alone. A PC below a listed tier may be less likely to meet that tier’s stated target, but the listing does not diagnose the cause of a crash or promise a particular result for an individual system.
Confirm the SSD requirement before considering storage changes
Check whether the game is installed on an SSD and whether the drive has enough free space for the listed 55 GB requirement. The specification establishes an SSD requirement; it does not establish that moving the game to an SSD cures crashes, stuttering, or low FPS. If you are considering a drive, first verify that your PC supports its interface and physical form factor and that it provides enough capacity. The available requirements do not recommend a particular SSD or quantify a performance uplift.

“Clair Obscur crashes on startup”
A Sandfall Team launch-day update dated April 24, 2025 described a specific startup-crash issue affecting players who had Steam Overlay disabled. The team said it had deployed a fix for that case and asked affected players to verify the game files through Steam. This is historical, configuration-specific guidance; it is not evidence that a disabled overlay explains a current startup crash on every PC.
- Update the game first. Make sure Steam has finished downloading available updates, then note the displayed build if you can access it. The launch-day note does not establish that its old issue explains a failure on a later build.
- If your setup matches the reported case, verify the files. In Steam, open Library, select Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, open Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to finish before launching again.
- Test the overlay condition separately. If Steam Overlay is disabled, record that fact. Do not simultaneously change unrelated graphics settings or Windows options; otherwise a repeat test will be hard to interpret.
- If it still fails, capture the error and system details. Record whether the game closes immediately, reaches a particular screen, or displays an error. Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, and storage with the PC listing before trying unrelated changes.
The developer’s April 24, 2025 note does not establish a current all-purpose startup-crash fix, and it does not support blanket instructions to reinstall drivers, edit configuration files, disable security software, or add launch flags.
“The game freezes after the cutscene” or crashes after the Sirene fight
Sandfall’s developer post titled “[INFO] Crash occurring after Sirene battle,” dated January 28, describes a narrow case: a crash or indefinite freeze after the Sirene cutscene on NVIDIA 40- and 50-series graphics cards when NVIDIA Frame Generation was enabled. The post also reported some cases above 160 FPS with Frame Generation disabled. Because the supplied citation does not establish the year of that January 28 post, the date should not be treated as a year-specific claim.

For players matching that scene and configuration, the developer’s temporary advice was to turn off NVIDIA Frame Generation or cap the game at 120 FPS. Treat either change as a targeted test, not a universal solution for other scenes, GPU families, or performance problems.

- Record your GPU family, whether NVIDIA Frame Generation is enabled, and the frame-rate limit or observed rate.
- If NVIDIA Frame Generation is enabled, turn it off temporarily and retry the same sequence.
- If the issue occurs with Frame Generation disabled and the frame rate is above 160 FPS, test a 120 FPS cap, as the developer’s earlier post advised.
- Retest the same sequence and record the result. Restore the prior setting if it makes no difference and you want to isolate a different variable.
Account for the later patch 1.5.3 status
Patch 1.5.3, dated March 17, 2026, says that after an internal investigation the team could no longer reproduce the crash after defeating Sirene. The notes suggest updating Windows if the issue continues and submitting a report for further investigation. That update changes the status of the reported case; it does not prove that every affected player’s PC was fixed or that the same cause applies to another crash.
To check for Windows updates, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and follow Windows’ restart prompt if one appears, then retest the same scene. If the problem remains, keep the build, exact scene, GPU, frame-generation state, frame cap, Windows version, and error details together for a report through the game’s current support or reporting channel. The March 2026 notes refer to a bug-report form, but the form’s current availability is not established here.

How to investigate stuttering
The cited official materials do not establish a general cause or verified fix for stuttering. In particular, an average FPS number alone cannot show whether motion is uneven. Treat adjustments below as controlled diagnostic tests, not developer-confirmed cures.
- Choose a repeatable test. Use the same location, camera movement, or action and note whether the interruption happens continuously, at a particular moment, or only on the first pass.
- Record the baseline. Note resolution, preset, frame cap, upscaler setting, frame generation, GPU, driver version, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- Test optional frame-generation settings one at a time. Patch 1.4.0 added Frame Generation and Low Latency for compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. If either feature is enabled, compare one setting at a time in the same scene. Their availability is not evidence that enabling them fixes uneven frame pacing; for the documented Sirene case, the earlier advice was specifically to disable NVIDIA Frame Generation.
- Test a lower graphics load separately. Try a lower resolution or graphics preset as a single change and repeat the same scene. If the symptom changes, record the exact setting and result. This can help distinguish a settings-sensitive performance problem from a repeatable scene-specific failure, but does not identify a root cause by itself.
- Compare repeated runs. Note whether the hitch recurs at the same point and whether a change produces a repeatable difference. If not, restore the setting and test another variable rather than accumulating tweaks.
How to investigate low FPS on PC
Start with the Steam target that matches your hardware tier: its minimum tier is associated with 1080p, 30 FPS on low settings; its recommended tier with 1080p, 60 FPS on high settings. A target listed at 1080p does not predict performance at a higher resolution, and a recommended target is not a guarantee in every location.
- Compare the full system: Check CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, operating system, DirectX version, and SSD status against the listing. Meeting one component’s recommendation does not establish that the whole PC meets the recommended tier.
- Record the actual test conditions: Include resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame generation, and frame cap whenever you note an FPS result. Results at different settings are not directly comparable.
- Lower one setting for a diagnostic comparison: Change the resolution or preset, not both at once, and repeat the same scene. A change in FPS shows that the tested setting affected that run; it does not prove a hardware fault or a universal optimal setting.
- Do not treat frame generation as a guaranteed FPS fix: Patch 1.4.0 added the feature for compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs, but the official announcement does not claim that it resolves low FPS or stutter on a particular PC.
- Do not buy hardware based on an undiagnosed symptom: The published requirements provide baselines, not a recommended upgrade for an individual machine. In particular, an SSD is a stated requirement, not a documented cure for this game’s crashes or a guaranteed FPS booster.
Which troubleshooting action should you try first?
Prioritize tests that match the observed symptom and are easy to reverse. The official sources do not publish success rates for these actions, so they cannot be ranked by likelihood of fixing a problem.

When to report a continuing problem
If the issue persists after a relevant, reversible test, report the problem through the game’s current support or bug-report channel. Include the information needed to distinguish a startup failure from a scene-specific crash or a performance complaint:
- Game version/build and storefront.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU model and driver version, VRAM, system RAM, and storage type.
- Resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame-generation and low-latency settings, and frame cap.
- The exact scene or action, whether the issue repeats, and whether the game crashes, freezes, stutters, or runs at low FPS.
- Exact error text and any relevant log information you can safely provide through the official reporting channel.
- Which single setting you changed for each test and what happened afterward.
These details are more useful than a list of unrelated tweaks because they let support distinguish a problem that matches a previously documented case from one that does not. Do not assume an old developer post explains a current issue simply because the symptom sounds similar.
