If Chrome becomes sluggish or drains a laptop while you study, use this order: close tabs you no longer need, enable Memory Saver, protect only essential study sites with Always keep these sites active, and enable Energy Saver when you are unplugged. Then update Chrome, remove unused extensions, and use Chrome Task Manager to find an unusually heavy tab or background page. These controls are for desktop Chrome; Chrome’s performance personalization is not available on iOS or Android.

Why many study tabs increase memory and battery use

Every open tab can hold page content, scripts, media, extensions, and unsaved form state in memory. More tabs also create more background work. Google’s official speed guidance puts the first step plainly: “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” You can read the guidance in Google Chrome Help’s speed-up article.

Memory pressure can make pages reload, switching tabs feel delayed, or the whole computer use virtual memory on storage. Battery use can rise when tabs run timers, refresh content, play media, synchronize data, or keep extensions active. There is no official figure for how many tabs are “too many,” nor a published guarantee for a particular RAM reduction or battery-life extension. The right setup depends on the pages you use and the computer’s available memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a two-minute cleanup

  1. Save work in documents, quizzes, forms, and note-taking pages.
  2. Close tabs unrelated to the current study session, especially duplicate searches, finished readings, and pages playing media.
  3. Keep a bookmark, reading-list entry, or saved document link for anything you may need later.
  4. Close windows you are not using. A tab in another window still consumes resources.

This is the lowest-risk change because it does not alter Chrome’s behavior or make a page reload later. If Chrome is still using excessive resources, continue with Performance settings rather than repeatedly closing tabs you need.

Configure Memory Saver for studying

Memory Saver deactivates tabs that you are not currently using so Chrome can reclaim computer memory. When you return to an inactive tab, Chrome automatically reloads it. A reload can restore the page, but transient state is not guaranteed; save an unfinished answer, draft, or other work in the site itself before leaving a tab idle.

Turn on Memory Saver

  1. Open Chrome on your computer.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu) > Settings.
  3. Open Performance.
  4. Turn on Memory Saver.

The current settings page is documented in Google’s “Personalize Chrome performance” help. Chrome labels can change, so use the current Settings > Performance page if your menu wording differs.

Choose the deactivation level

Level What Chrome does When it fits
Moderate Provides moderate memory savings and waits longer before making an inactive tab inactive. Useful when you often return to reference pages and want fewer reloads.
Balanced (recommended by Google) Uses a middle, “optimal” interval before deactivation and balances memory savings with continuity. A sensible default for a mixed study session.
Maximum Targets maximum memory savings and deactivates inactive tabs after a shorter interval. Useful when memory pressure is the immediate problem and reloads are acceptable.

Google describes these intervals and savings qualitatively; it does not publish a guaranteed number of megabytes saved by any level. Start with Balanced, then move to Moderate if important pages reload too often or to Maximum if Chrome remains constrained.

Keep essential study pages active

Memory Saver is not all-or-nothing. In Settings > Performance, find Always keep these sites active and add the course platform, document host, research database, or other site that must remain immediately available. Use the interface to select the essential site or host rather than hand-writing wildcard patterns. The setting supports site and path-level rules, but a broad rule can keep more pages active than intended.

Decide what deserves an exclusion

  • Protect: an online exam, a long form, a collaborative document with unsaved edits, or a live class page where an unexpected reload would be disruptive.
  • Allow deactivation: finished readings, reference searches, static instructions, and pages that are easy to reopen.
  • Review periodically: remove a site from the list when the course or project ends. Every protected site can continue using memory in the background.

Why an apparently idle tab may stay active

Chrome can avoid deactivating a tab when it detects activity that needs continuity. Google lists active audio or video playback or calls, screen sharing, page notifications, active downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected USB or Bluetooth devices among the conditions that may prevent deactivation. Therefore, Memory Saver may not deactivate every tab that looks idle in your tab strip. If one remains active, check whether one of these conditions applies before assuming the setting failed.

Reduce battery use with Energy Saver

Energy Saver reduces some background work when your computer is running on battery. Google says it lowers the image capture rate and other background activity. It can stop eligible CPU-intensive background tabs, while tabs using video conferencing or playing audio are not affected. Google also warns that video and gaming performance may change.

Enable Energy Saver

  1. In Chrome, select More > Settings.
  2. Choose Performance.
  3. Turn on Energy Saver.

Energy Saver is available on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook computers that have a battery installed. It activates automatically when the computer is unplugged or the battery is low, and it does not activate while the computer is plugged in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to leave it on or make an exception

Choice Effect Use it when
Energy Saver on Some background work is reduced while on battery; CPU-intensive eligible background tabs may be stopped. You are reading, writing, or researching and want to limit background battery drain.
Energy Saver off Chrome keeps its normal background behavior. A session depends on frequent background updates or normal visual performance.

If a particular session needs normal background behavior, select the Energy Saver icon and choose Turn off now when that control is offered. Treat this as a temporary session-level exception; background updates can resume, so turn Energy Saver back on afterward if you still need battery savings.

Find the tab or extension causing persistent high use

If Chrome remains slow after reducing the tab set and enabling the appropriate performance controls, use Google’s troubleshooting sequence: update Chrome, remove extensions you do not use, and inspect Chrome Task Manager. The detailed steps are in Google Chrome Help.

Update Chrome

  1. Open Chrome’s More menu.
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Allow Chrome to check for and install an available update.
  4. Choose Relaunch if Chrome offers it, after saving your work.

An update can fix performance bugs and ensures that the labels and controls you see are current. Restarting Chrome closes its tabs, so save documents and copy important form entries first.

Disable extensions you do not need

  1. Select More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off an extension you do not use for studying.
  3. Work for a while and check whether memory or battery behavior improves.
  4. Remove an extension only if you are sure you no longer need it; otherwise leave it disabled for testing.

Extensions can add background pages and scripts even when their visible pop-up is closed. Change one or a small, known group at a time so you can identify the cause without disrupting tools you rely on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Chrome Task Manager safely

  1. Open Chrome’s More menu and choose More tools > Task manager.
  2. Click the Memory column to sort from highest use to lowest. If necessary, click it again to reverse the order.
  3. Identify a clearly unnecessary tab, extension, or background page. Save work in that page first.
  4. Select the item and choose End process.

Ending a task stops it immediately, and unsaved work in that task can be lost. Do not terminate an unfamiliar process simply because it is high in the list. First identify its tab or extension, save anything important, and use the browser normally after the change. If the item returns, its page or extension may be recreating the workload.

Use preloading as an optional experiment

Chrome’s Preload pages setting is also under Settings > Performance. Google describes preloading as a way to make browsing and searching faster. The official guidance does not quantify its memory or battery cost and does not present disabling it as a guaranteed fix.

If Chrome is still using more resources than your study workflow allows, record your current behavior, change the preloading option, and use the same sites for a comparable session. Keep the change only if it improves your experience without making navigation unacceptably slower. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a promise of a specific resource saving.

A practical study-session setup

Before you start

  • Bookmark or save links for readings you are not using today.
  • Close media, shopping, social, and duplicate-search tabs that are unrelated to the assignment.
  • Save drafts and form answers in the relevant service before switching away.
  • Plug in the computer if you need uninterrupted video conferencing, audio playback, or maximum video performance.

During the session

  • Keep Memory Saver on Balanced initially.
  • Add only continuity-critical sites to Always keep these sites active.
  • Leave Energy Saver on when you are unplugged unless the session needs normal background updates or performance.
  • Close a tab after finishing its task instead of accumulating completed pages.

After the session

  • Close temporary search and reference tabs.
  • Remove finished course sites from the active-site exception list when they are no longer essential.
  • Restore any temporary Energy Saver exception.
  • Save notes and documents in their service before closing Chrome.

A quick decision guide for a study slowdown

If the browser is slow immediately after opening a large set of tabs, start with cleanup rather than changing every setting at once. Save work, close finished pages, and see whether responsiveness returns. If the slowdown appears after leaving tabs untouched for a long time, Memory Saver is the relevant control: Balanced is Google’s recommended starting point, Moderate favors longer continuity, and Maximum favors earlier deactivation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one course site must remain ready for instant use, add that site to Always keep these sites active instead of excluding an entire category of websites. A narrow site or path rule limits the memory you keep resident. Check the exception list later because a site that was essential during an exam may not be needed for ordinary reading.

If the main complaint is battery drain while unplugged, enable Energy Saver and accept that image capture, background work, or eligible CPU-heavy tabs may be reduced. Do not judge it during a video call or audio lesson alone: Google says those tabs are not affected in the same way, and Energy Saver can change video performance. For a persistent problem, compare Task Manager during the same activity before and after disabling one extension or ending one clearly unnecessary process.

Make one meaningful change at a time and observe the same study workflow. This makes it easier to tell whether a reload, slower navigation, or improved battery behavior came from the setting you changed rather than from a different set of pages.

If you cannot find a named option, open the current Settings page and search for Performance, then look for Memory Saver, Energy Saver, active-site exclusions, and preloading controls.

What each fix can and cannot guarantee

Action Likely benefit Important limitation
Close unused tabs Removes work Chrome no longer needs to maintain. You lose the open page unless you save or bookmark it first.
Memory Saver Reclaims memory by deactivating inactive tabs. Returning to a deactivated tab reloads it, and transient page state may not survive.
Always keep these sites active Preserves continuity for selected sites. Those sites remain eligible to consume memory; overly broad rules reduce the benefit.
Energy Saver Reduces selected background work on battery. Video and gaming performance can change; video-call and audio tabs are not affected in the same way.
Task Manager Lets you stop a clearly unnecessary high-memory item. Ending a task can discard unsaved work and may not solve a workload that immediately returns.
Preloading change Provides a controlled way to test whether faster navigation is worth its resource behavior. Google publishes no measured saving or universal recommendation for disabling it.

When Chrome still feels slow

Work through the checks in this order: confirm that the computer is not nearly out of storage or running another heavy application; save and close unnecessary Chrome tabs; verify that Memory Saver is enabled; review the active-site exception list; disable unused extensions; update and relaunch Chrome; then inspect Task Manager during the slowdown. If one page repeatedly consumes a large amount of memory, look for a lighter version of that page or report the behavior to its site owner. If the problem occurs only during video calls or screen sharing, remember that those activities can prevent Memory Saver from deactivating a tab and can require more normal performance settings.

Do not chase an exact tab count or expect a fixed percentage improvement. Google’s current documentation provides the controls and their trade-offs, but not a benchmark for a particular student, computer, number of tabs, or battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Memory Saver delete my study tab?

No. It deactivates an inactive tab to reclaim memory. When you return, Chrome reloads it. Save drafts, quiz answers, and partially completed forms first because transient page state is not guaranteed to survive a reload.

Which Memory Saver level should a student choose?

Balanced is Google’s recommended middle option. Choose Moderate when you return frequently to reference pages and want longer inactive intervals; choose Maximum when immediate memory pressure matters more than avoiding reloads.

Why did Chrome not deactivate a tab I have not touched?

Audio or video playback or calls, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected USB or Bluetooth devices can prevent deactivation. Check those conditions before treating Memory Saver as broken.

Can I keep an online exam or document from reloading?

Add its course site or document host under Settings > Performance > Always keep these sites active. Keep the rule as narrow as practical, and remove it when the course or project no longer needs continuous activity.

Does Energy Saver work on a desktop computer?

Google documents Energy Saver for Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery installed. It activates when unplugged or when the battery is low and does not activate while plugged in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Energy Saver stop my video class?

Tabs using video conferencing or playing audio are not affected in the same way as eligible CPU-intensive background tabs. Google still warns that video performance can change, so use the Energy Saver icon’s Turn off now control for a session that needs normal behavior.

Is it safe to end a process in Chrome Task Manager?

End only a clearly unnecessary tab, extension, or background page after saving its work. Ending a task stops it immediately and can discard unsaved work; an unfamiliar high-memory process should be identified before you stop it.

Should I disable Preload pages to save memory?

Treat it as an optional comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Google describes preloading as a speed feature and does not publish a measured memory or battery cost. Test the same study workflow with the setting changed and keep the change only if it helps.

Are these performance settings available on an iPhone or Android phone?

No. The performance personalization described here is for Chrome on a computer; Google’s settings page says it is not available to personalize on iOS or Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most study sessions, close finished tabs, start Memory Saver on Balanced, exclude only continuity-critical sites, and turn on Energy Saver when unplugged. Save work before leaving tabs idle or ending tasks, and use updates, extension cleanup, and Task Manager to investigate what remains. These controls change Chrome’s behavior, but Google publishes no fixed RAM or battery guarantee for a particular number of tabs.
