Buffering on a smart TV usually comes from an unstable connection, weak or congested Wi‑Fi, a modem or router that needs a clean restart, outdated TV software, or one faulty streaming app. Work from the outside in: test whether the problem affects one app or everything, restart the TV and network, measure the connection at the TV, improve Wi‑Fi or switch to Ethernet, then repair the app if it is the only failure.
First determine whether the TV, the network, or one app is at fault
Do not begin by changing random settings. Scope the failure first, because the correct fix depends on what still works.
Compare titles in the same app
Play a different movie or episode in the app that is buffering. If only one title fails, the service may be having a problem with that stream rather than your TV or internet connection. If every title in that app pauses, continue testing.

Open a second service on the TV. Several apps failing in the same way points toward the TV’s network connection, Wi‑Fi coverage, router, modem, or internet service. If another app plays normally, concentrate on the first app and the TV software.

Test another device on the same Wi‑Fi
Use a phone or laptop connected to the same wireless network. Test a video or run a connection check while the TV is buffering. If the other device is also slow, investigate the network. If it is fast while the TV struggles, the TV’s location, wireless hardware, software, or app is more likely to be responsible.
Restart the TV, modem, and router completely
A clean restart clears temporary software faults, stale network sessions, and router state that can cause rebuffering. Netflix and Roku both include restarting the TV or player and modem/router among their basic troubleshooting steps.
- Stop playback and turn off the TV or external streaming player.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait while both devices are fully off, then reconnect the modem and router.
- Allow the network equipment to finish starting and restore internet service.
- Turn the TV back on, reconnect it to Wi‑Fi if necessary, and test the same app again.
Restarting only the TV can leave a congested or malfunctioning router session untouched. Restarting only the router can leave an app or TV process in a bad state, so do both before changing advanced settings.
Measure the connection at the TV
There is no universal smart-TV speed number that guarantees smooth playback. Services use different requirements, and the result that matters is the connection available to your TV at the time you watch.
Use the TV’s built-in network test
Open the network or connection-testing option in the TV’s Settings menu, then run the test while the TV is connected in its normal location. The exact label differs by manufacturer and model. Record whether the test reports a failed connection, weak signal, or a working connection with a measured speed.

Use a streaming app’s test
Some apps expose a connection check in their Help, Get Help, or Network settings. LG documents an on-TV speed-test procedure for Netflix and YouTube use; follow the instructions shown for your model rather than assuming that every LG interface uses the same path.
Use Fast.com in the TV browser
If the TV has a web browser, open Fast.com and wait for the measurement to complete. Run it more than once, including when buffering occurs, because a result taken at a quiet time may not represent the connection during peak household use. Netflix directs viewers to Fast.com and to its own service-specific requirements.

A record makes it easier to distinguish a persistent coverage problem from evening congestion and gives an ISP or router manufacturer useful evidence.
Improve Wi‑Fi before replacing equipment
Wireless performance depends on distance, walls, interference, channel crowding, and the number of devices competing for capacity. A TV can show a strong connection icon and still experience short interruptions if the channel is busy or another device consumes bandwidth in bursts.
Reduce distance and obstacles
- Move the TV or router closer together where practical.
- Reduce the number of walls and large obstructions between them.
- Do not enclose the router in a cabinet or place it behind other electronics if relocating it can improve the signal path.
Change one location at a time, then repeat the TV’s network test and playback test. This gives you a measurable before-and-after result instead of relying on the signal icon alone.

Pause competing traffic
Temporarily stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth activity. Ask other household devices to pause video calls or high-resolution streams while you test. If the TV becomes reliable when those devices are quiet, the issue is household congestion rather than a permanently slow TV connection.

Address crowded wireless channels
Roku identifies crowded channels, weak signal, and other devices using Wi‑Fi as common causes of playback problems. If your router offers channel selection or automatic channel optimization, try a less crowded channel according to the router maker’s instructions. Restart the router after changing the setting if its interface requests it, then measure the TV again.
Use Ethernet when the TV has a network port
A wired connection removes the TV’s Wi‑Fi signal path from the equation. Roku states that an Ethernet connection is more stable than Wi‑Fi for supported players and TVs.
| Factor | Wi‑Fi | Ethernet |
|---|---|---|
| Signal stability | Can vary with distance, walls, interference, channel crowding, and other wireless devices. | Uses a direct cable path to the router and avoids the TV’s wireless signal conditions. |
| Installation effort | No cable run is required, but placement may need adjustment. | Requires a cable from the router to the TV and a free Ethernet port on both devices. |
| Best diagnostic use | Useful for identifying whether coverage or wireless congestion is the problem. | Useful as a control test: if wired playback is smooth, the Wi‑Fi path is the likely cause. |
| Supported hardware | Available on TVs with compatible wireless networking. | Available only when the TV or player includes an Ethernet port. |
Connect a Cat6 Ethernet cable directly from the TV’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on the router. Disable or disconnect Wi‑Fi if the TV does not switch automatically, then rerun the network test and play the same content. If buffering stops on the wired connection, improve wireless placement or coverage rather than immediately buying faster broadband.
Fix a problem that affects only one app
When other apps and devices work, changing the router’s advanced settings is unlikely to help. Repair the application and the TV software in a controlled order.

Cold-boot the TV
Turn the TV off, disconnect it from power, wait for it to shut down completely, reconnect it, and start it again. This is different from tapping the remote’s standby button if that leaves the TV in a low-power state. Test the affected app before making another change.
Update the TV software
Open the TV’s software-update section and install any available update. Menus vary by model, so use the wording shown on your TV. An outdated system can make an otherwise working app freeze, fail to load, or crash.
Update or reinstall the app
- Check the TV’s app store or app-management screen for an update.
- Install the update and restart the TV.
- If the app still fails, remove it when the TV permits removal.
- Restart the TV, reinstall the app, sign in again, and test playback.
Reinstallation can remove corrupted local app data, but it also removes downloaded content and may require your account credentials again. Have those credentials available before deleting the app.
Reset the app hub when applicable
Samsung lists resetting Smart Hub as a remedy for apps that freeze, fail to load, or crash. The exact menu path and reset wording depend on the TV model and software version. A Smart Hub reset can sign you out of apps and restore their default state, so use it after updating and reinstalling when those steps have not solved the problem.
Check the router and home layout when several apps buffer
If multiple TV apps and another device struggle, the TV is reporting a broader network condition. Look for a pattern before replacing hardware.

Separate coverage weakness from congestion
Move the TV temporarily closer to the router and repeat the test. Improvement at the shorter distance indicates coverage or interference. Little or no improvement while other devices are active indicates congestion, a router problem, or an internet-service problem.
Consider router or mesh changes only after measuring
A router repositioning costs less effort than replacing equipment and should be the first change when the signal path is poor. A router or mesh replacement is more reasonable when the home’s layout prevents a useful placement, many devices compete for Wi‑Fi, or you need additional Ethernet ports. Confirm the weakness or congestion with the TV test before spending money; new hardware cannot repair a single broken app or outdated TV software.
When an external streaming device may help
Some TVs have slower app interfaces or receive app updates less often than external players. An external streaming device can be worth testing when the TV’s built-in app is unsupported, repeatedly crashes after software and app repairs, or has network hardware that performs poorly while another device on the same Wi‑Fi is stable.
Compare the app support and update status, network hardware, interface responsiveness, and total cost. Connect the device to the same network first; if it buffers in the same location, the network remains the leading suspect. If it plays smoothly while the built-in app does not, use the external device as a workaround and continue checking for TV software updates.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
- Every app buffers, and another device is slow: restart modem/router and TV, measure the connection, pause competing traffic, and contact the ISP if the measured result remains poor.
- Every app buffers, but other devices are fine: test closer to the router, try Ethernet, and check the TV’s software and network hardware.
- Only one app buffers: test another title, cold-boot the TV, update the TV and app, reinstall the app, and reset the app hub where applicable.
- Buffering appears mainly at busy times: record several Fast.com or TV-test results and compare them with quieter periods; household or neighborhood congestion may be involved.
- Playback is smooth over Ethernet but not Wi‑Fi: focus on placement, channel crowding, competing wireless devices, or expanded coverage.
- Playback fails on both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet: verify that the cable and router port work, then investigate TV software, the app, the router, or the internet service rather than assuming Wi‑Fi is at fault.
Know when to contact support
Contact your ISP or router maker
Escalate after a clean restart, a measured test, and a wired test when available if every app remains slow. Provide the measured results, whether Ethernet changed the behavior, and the times of day when buffering occurs. This is more useful than reporting only that the TV feels slow.
Contact the streaming service
If one service fails while other apps and devices play normally, use that service’s app-specific troubleshooting or contact its support team. Include the TV model, app version if visible, title or episode affected, and the time of the failure.
Do not assume that purchasing a faster broadband plan will fix a corrupted app, unsupported TV software, poor Wi‑Fi placement, or a failing router. First identify which part of the path is actually failing.
Quick Recap
Prevent future buffering
- Keep the TV system and streaming apps updated.
- Leave the router in an open location with a clear path toward the TV where possible.
- Pause large downloads and backups during important viewing.
- Use Ethernet for a TV with a convenient router connection when wireless reliability remains inconsistent.
- Record connection-test results when a problem appears so support staff can compare conditions over time.
