Start by finding out whether the fault belongs to one title, one app, one streaming device, the TV connection, or the whole home network. Then test the connection on the streaming device itself, restart the affected hardware in the correct order, and isolate Wi‑Fi from the HDMI/display path. These checks usually identify the right fix before you buy a cable, router, or other equipment.
Buffering and poor picture quality are different faults
Buffering is the player pausing while it obtains more video data. It most often points to a weak or unstable connection between the streaming device and the service, although a device that needs an update can also be involved. An advertised broadband speed is the maximum for the service plan, not proof that the TV-connected device is receiving a stable connection.
Poor video quality can mean a blurry or low-resolution picture, but it can also mean distortion, glitching, skipping, stuttering, a blank screen, or flickering. A blurry picture may be the service adapting to a slow connection; visual artifacts that appear even when playback is not pausing can instead come from the HDMI cable, a TV input, an AV receiver, or a switch.

Do not treat every picture complaint as an internet-speed problem. Use the symptom and the scope of the failure to choose the next test.

Use this quick triage before changing anything

This scope check prevents you from replacing working hardware when the problem is limited to a single title or app.
1. Establish the scope of the failure
Test another title in the same app
Start a different movie, episode, or live event. If only one title has the symptom, the service may have a problem with that title’s stream rather than with your broadband connection. Netflix provides a report-problem path through Viewing Activity for an individual title. Record the title, the time, and the exact symptom when you submit the report.
Test another app on the same device
If another app plays normally, the network link and display path are at least capable of working. Concentrate on the affected app: close and reopen it, sign in again if required, install any available app or device update, and check the service’s status or support guidance. Do not assume that reinstalling every app will repair a network fault.

Try a phone, tablet, game console, or second TV-connected streamer on the same home network. If only one streamer fails, use that device’s network diagnostics and update instructions. If many devices are slow or offline, investigate the router, modem, and ISP connection instead of repeatedly changing the TV settings.
2. Measure the connection where streaming happens
A speed test on a phone in another room can be useful, but it does not measure the signal reaching the streaming device. Run the built-in test on the streamer whenever the service or device provides one.

Netflix on a TV-connected device
In the Netflix TV app, open Get Help and choose Check your Network (the exact menu wording can vary by device). The tool checks whether the device can reach Netflix and measures its connection speed. Use the result while the device is connected in its normal location, not beside the router for a temporary test.
Amazon Fire TV
Open the Fire TV network settings and select Network Diagnostics. Compatible models also offer Run Speed Test. These checks show the connection from the Fire TV itself. If the test fails or is much slower than expected, note whether other devices are affected before changing settings.
Roku and other platforms
Roku’s network check is intended to indicate whether the connection can support smooth streaming and warns that other devices may be using bandwidth. Menu names differ by model and software version, so use the network-check option in your device’s current settings. A result from any platform is more useful than an advertised plan speed because it reflects the actual wireless or wired link.
Interpret Netflix’s speed recommendations correctly
Netflix’s current Help Center table recommends the following stable connection speeds. The figures are Netflix recommendations, not universal guarantees for every service, household, or number of simultaneous streams; the page was accessed in 2026 and does not state a publication year.

If the device-level result is below the recommendation for the quality you selected, reduce the playback quality temporarily or investigate the network. If the result looks adequate but playback still pauses, look for instability, other devices consuming bandwidth, an outage, or an app/device fault rather than assuming the plan is fast enough.

3. Restart the device and network in a controlled order
Restarting clears temporary software and connection states. Use the procedure for your hardware; do not combine every vendor’s waiting interval into one ritual.
Basic device restart
- Stop playback and turn the streaming device fully off. A standby state may not clear the fault.
- For Netflix TV devices, leave the device off for 15 seconds, then turn it on and retry the title.
- If the device has a physical power button, Netflix also documents pressing it, unplugging the device, and waiting one minute; another Netflix buffering procedure uses a three-minute unplug interval. Follow the instruction that matches your model rather than stacking all intervals together.
Restart the home network
- Turn off the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds for the Netflix network-restart procedure, then reconnect the modem and router. Allow about one minute for them to come online; some equipment needs longer.
- Retry the stream only after the router shows an active internet connection.
If you use Fire TV, Amazon’s instructions specify unplugging the Fire TV for 10 seconds. For the modem and router, unplug them for one minute, reconnect the modem first, and then reconnect the router after the modem has come online. The exact timing differs by vendor, so model-specific instructions take precedence.
4. Isolate weak Wi‑Fi without spending money
Move the streamer and router closer for a test
Temporarily place the streamer closer to the router, or move the router into a more open location if practical. If buffering stops or the device-level speed rises, coverage or interference is a likely bottleneck. This is a diagnostic change; it does not prove that a permanent relocation is convenient or necessary.
Try Ethernet when the hardware has a port
Connect the streamer or TV directly to the router with Ethernet, then repeat the same title and network test. Roku’s support guidance describes a wired connection as more stable than Wi‑Fi where an Ethernet port is available. If wired playback is reliable while Wi‑Fi is not, focus on router placement, wireless coverage, and interference. Ethernet cannot repair an ISP outage, a broken app, or a title-specific fault.
Consider mesh coverage only after diagnosis
Amazon suggests a mesh router for larger homes. Treat that as a conditional coverage option, not a guaranteed buffering cure. First confirm the problem with the closer-position test or Ethernet. A mesh system will not fix a service outage, a defective HDMI path, or a device that needs an update.

Check for competing use
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other video streams while testing. Roku’s network guidance notes that other devices may be using bandwidth. Repeat the test at a quiet time and while normal household activity is occurring; the difference helps identify capacity or contention without confusing it with a faulty streamer.
5. Separate a network problem from an HDMI or display problem
Use the following checks when the picture is distorted, glitchy, skipping, stuttering, blank, or flickering, especially if the stream does not pause to buffer.
Reconnect and change the HDMI path
- Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable and reconnect them firmly.
- Select the TV input that corresponds to the streamer.
- Try a different HDMI input on the TV.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch.
- If possible, test the streamer on another TV.
Netflix identifies the device or video cable as possible causes of distorted or skipping output. If the same streamer works on a second TV, the original TV input or display path becomes the leading suspect. If the fault follows the streamer to every TV, return to device software and network diagnostics.
Apple TV display checks
For Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, verify the selected TV input, try another HDMI port and cable, and connect directly to the TV to isolate a switch or AV receiver. Check the video settings for resolution, Match Dynamic Range, and Match Frame Rate. Apple notes that matching settings can produce a blank or flickering screen during format changes. Apple’s cable guidance is model-specific: use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0.

6. Restore picture quality after playback is stable
Determine whether the service is adapting quality
If the stream starts blurry and becomes sharp after a short time, the service may be adapting quality to the measured connection. Check the device-level speed and other household use before changing display settings. A stable link that meets the service’s recommendation is more important than the broadband plan’s advertised maximum.
Check the selected output and TV input
For a permanently soft image, confirm that the streamer is connected to the intended HDMI input and that its output resolution is appropriate for the TV. Avoid changing several picture and resolution settings at once; make one change, replay the same scene, and record whether the result changes. If another app is sharp on the same input, the display hardware is probably capable of the expected picture and the affected service or title deserves attention.
Update the streamer
Netflix states that buffering can occur when the device needs an update. Install pending system and app updates, restart the device, and repeat the original test. If every app remains affected after an update and a network restart, the device maker is the appropriate next support channel.
7. Follow the correct escalation path

Netflix recommends contacting the ISP when its connection steps do not resolve the problem. Amazon likewise directs customers toward network and ISP checks when multiple devices are affected. Give support the scope, device-level test result, restart steps already completed, and whether Ethernet or a direct-TV connection changed the symptom.

- Try another title and another app.
- Check whether another device on the same network is affected.
- Run the network test on the streaming device itself.
- Compare the result with the service’s recommendation for the selected quality; for Netflix, those are 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K, all requiring stability.
- Restart the streamer using its vendor procedure.
- Restart the modem and router in the documented order.
- Move the streamer closer to the router and repeat the test.
- Use Ethernet as a diagnostic when the port is available.
- If the image itself is distorted, blank, or flickering, change HDMI port/cable and bypass receivers or switches.
- Escalate to the streaming service, device maker, TV/cable path, router/network administrator, or ISP according to the evidence.
