Buffering and out-of-sync sound usually come from one of four places: an unstable or congested connection, a browser or device decoding problem, an aggressive low-latency setting, or the event stream itself. Isolate the cause before changing everything at once: test another live stream, switch networks, lower the player quality, then retest in a clean browser or another device. The sequence below restores smooth playback while preserving as much picture quality and live timing as your connection can support.

First determine whether the fault is yours or the event feed

A Game Awards stream can stall even when your internet is healthy. Broadcaster bitrate, encoder settings, codec, resolution, frame rate, or an unstable upload can make one event feed fail for many viewers. Conversely, a crowded Wi-Fi channel, a download running elsewhere in your home, a browser extension, or a television app can affect only you.

Use this short isolation test before making permanent changes:

  1. Open a different live stream on the same service. If it plays normally, the Game Awards feed or its broadcaster configuration may be responsible.
  2. Play the same event on another browser or app on the same device. A difference points toward extensions, cache, hardware acceleration, or a player-specific issue.
  3. Try another device on the same network. If the second device works, focus on the original device, its operating system, drivers, or app.
  4. Switch to mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network for a few minutes. If playback improves, your original connection or local network is the likely bottleneck.

Write down the result of each test. Changing several variables simultaneously can hide the real cause.

Check bandwidth against the stream’s actual quality

Video quality determines how much sustained download capacity the player needs. Twitch’s 2026 viewer guidance lists these download ranges:

Playback quality Recommended download speed How to use the figure
1440p at 60 frames per second 9–18 Mbps or higher Use the upper end when other people or devices share the connection.
1080p at 60 frames per second 7–12 Mbps Avoid treating the lower number as a guarantee during congestion.
720p at 60 frames per second 3–6 Mbps Often a practical fallback for a busy home network.
480p 1.1–3 Mbps Useful when HD cannot remain stable.
360p 0.7–1.5 Mbps Lowest listed Twitch range for keeping a live picture moving.

These are Twitch’s published ranges, not a promise that every stream will work at the minimum. Wi-Fi loss, household traffic, route congestion, and short speed drops reduce the bandwidth available to the player. For MLB’s HD playback guidance, the service recommends at least 3000 Kbps of dedicated bandwidth (3 Mbps) in 2026. “Dedicated” matters: a speed test that shows 3 Mbps while another device is uploading or streaming does not leave the full amount for the game feed.

Interpret what a speed test can and cannot tell you

Run a test while no large download is active, then repeat it during the buffering. A high result at one moment does not rule out intermittent Wi-Fi interference or congestion. Compare the measured download speed with the quality row you selected, and leave headroom rather than operating at the exact threshold.

Stabilize the connection before sacrificing picture quality

Make one connection change at a time and watch the stream for several minutes. The goal is a consistent path, not merely a high peak speed.

  1. Move closer to the router. Walls, floors, metal furniture, and distance weaken Wi-Fi. Relocating the viewing device or router can remove enough packet loss to stop stalls.
  2. Pause competing traffic. Stop cloud backups, game downloads, large file transfers, and other video streams. Ask other users to pause bandwidth-heavy activity during the broadcast.
  3. Switch Wi-Fi bands or networks if available. A less crowded band or a second access point may be steadier. A phone’s mobile-data hotspot is a useful temporary comparison, although your carrier’s data allowance and signal quality still apply.
  4. Test wired Ethernet. Connect the viewing device directly to the router when possible. Ethernet removes the local wireless link from the test and gives you a controlled comparison; it does not fix congestion beyond your home network.
  5. Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily. VPN routing can add distance, congestion, or throughput limits. Turn it off only for diagnosis, then decide whether the privacy or access benefit is worth any playback trade-off.

If another network fixes the stream immediately, the original Wi-Fi or internet path needs attention. Restarting the router may clear a temporary fault, but it will not increase the service’s contracted capacity or correct a broadcaster-side problem.

Choose a player quality that can survive live conditions

Live players have less room to recover from a speed dip than an on-demand video. Start with Auto quality. Twitch says its Auto setting adjusts video quality to current network conditions and is intended to reduce buffering. If Auto keeps oscillating or the picture remains unstable, select a lower resolution manually in the player.

Auto quality Adapts when bandwidth changes. The picture may change resolution during the show. Most home connections, especially when traffic varies.
Manual lower quality Reduces sustained bandwidth demand and can stop repeated stalls. Less detail and, on some services, a different frame-rate option. Connections that briefly fall below the HD range.
Manual high quality Predictable resolution when capacity is ample. A short drop can empty the small live buffer and freeze playback. Stable wired or lightly loaded connections.

Close unused browser tabs and bandwidth-heavy applications while testing. A lower resolution is a sensible diagnostic, not an admission that your connection is permanently inadequate; restore the preferred quality after the event if the underlying issue is fixed.

Understand why low latency can increase buffering

Low-latency modes reduce the time between the venue and your screen, which is useful when you want announcements and winners as close to real time as possible. The trade-off is a smaller safety buffer. YouTube Help explains: “The lower the broadcast delay, the less buffer the video player will have.” With less queued video, each brief speed drop or packet-loss burst is more likely to cause a pause.

When to use each latency mode

Mode Timing Stability trade-off Recommendation during a problem
Low latency Minimizes delay from the live production. Less buffer and greater sensitivity to interruptions. Use only when the connection is already reliable and immediate timing matters.
Default or normal latency Allows more delay before the picture reaches you. More queued video generally gives the player room to absorb short dips. Prefer it while troubleshooting recurring stalls.

On Twitch, open the player settings, inspect the available latency control, and try disabling low latency. The exact wording and availability can vary by player, account, or device. On YouTube, choose the service’s normal or default live playback behavior rather than a lower-delay option when interruptions are the priority.

Fix browser, app, and device playback problems

A connection can be fast enough while the device still fails to decode the stream. Work through software changes in a reversible order.

Use a clean, current browser session

  1. Update the browser to its current supported release and restart it.
  2. Disable extensions, especially ad blockers and script-modifying add-ons, for the event page. An extension can interfere with the player even when ordinary websites work.
  3. Clear the site’s cached data and cookies, then sign in again if required. A damaged cache can preserve a broken player state.
  4. Open the stream in a private or incognito window. If it works there, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.
  5. Try another supported browser. A successful second browser narrows the fault to the original browser’s settings or media components.

Check hardware acceleration and graphics drivers

Twitch’s decode-error guidance recommends toggling hardware acceleration off and updating GPU drivers when playback errors persist. In a browser’s settings, change the hardware-acceleration option, fully restart the browser, and retest. If disabling it makes video worse, restore the original setting and instead install the latest graphics driver supplied for your operating system and GPU. Do not change both settings at once if you need to identify which one helped.

Refresh an app, television, console, or streaming stick

  • Install pending operating-system and app updates.
  • Force-close the streaming app rather than leaving it suspended, then open it again.
  • Restart the television, console, or streaming stick; a normal display standby may not clear a decoder process.
  • Check the device’s date and time if sign-in or playback authorization repeatedly fails.
  • Compare the same event in a browser or on a phone. Different apps use different decoders and cache paths, so this comparison is informative.

Menu names differ across television brands, consoles, and mobile operating systems. Look for the app’s update, storage/cache, restart, and network-test controls rather than following a menu path from a different model.

Diagnose audio delay separately from buffering

“Audio delay” can describe two different symptoms:

  • Constant offset: speech is always ahead of or behind the lips by roughly the same amount. This often points to the event feed, a device audio-processing chain, or a player state.
  • Drift or changing offset: sound starts aligned, then moves further out of sync, often while the video buffers or resumes. This more strongly suggests playback interruptions, decoder load, or a stream that is repeatedly rebuilding its timeline.

Use a controlled sync test

  1. Pause the live player briefly, allow it to load, and resume. If the offset disappears temporarily, the previous playback state or buffer was likely involved.
  2. Reload the event and compare a different live stream. If only the Game Awards feed is out of sync, do not keep changing local audio settings; the feed may be misaligned.
  3. Test headphones or the device’s built-in speakers. If one output is synchronized and the other is not, inspect the television, soundbar, receiver, or Bluetooth path.
  4. Try the event on another device and network. A persistent offset across both tests is evidence against a local browser or Wi-Fi fault.

Account for television and Bluetooth processing

Wireless headphones, soundbars, receivers, and television “enhancement” modes can add different amounts of processing delay. Temporarily use wired headphones or built-in speakers as a comparison, and turn off extra audio effects while diagnosing. If your television or receiver offers an audio-delay or lip-sync control, make a small adjustment and verify it with speech; record the original value so you can undo the change. Do not compensate for a feed that is already wrong on every device, because a local offset will then make other programs incorrect.

What to do when only the Game Awards stream is wrong

If other live streams play normally on the same device and network, and the event remains buffered or out of sync after a reload and a second-device test, the problem may be upstream. Twitch notes that broadcaster bitrate, encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload instability can all cause stream failures. A viewer cannot repair those settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep watching for a service-side recovery, or report the fault through the platform or broadcaster’s support channel. Include:

  • The event name and the approximate clock time, including your time zone.
  • The platform and exact player or event page.
  • Your country or general location, device model, operating system, browser or app version, and whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Whether another stream, device, or network worked.
  • The symptom: repeated buffering, a fixed audio offset, audio drift, black video, or a decode error.
  • The quality and latency setting selected when the failure occurred.

This information distinguishes a regional routing issue from a defective feed and gives support a reproducible window.

A complete recovery sequence for the night of the show

Use the following order when you need a practical checklist rather than a diagnosis exercise:

  1. Reload the player and test a different live stream on the same service.
  2. Set quality to Auto; if it still stalls, select a lower resolution.
  3. Pause other downloads and streams, then move closer to the router or connect Ethernet.
  4. Disable any VPN or proxy for the test.
  5. Open the event in a current browser with extensions disabled, or restart and update the app.
  6. Clear the player site’s cache and cookies, then restart the browser or device.
  7. Toggle hardware acceleration and update the GPU driver if you see decode errors or a black picture.
  8. Switch from low latency to the default latency mode.
  9. Compare built-in speakers, wired headphones, and the normal soundbar/Bluetooth path to isolate audio processing.
  10. If the same feed fails everywhere, capture the diagnostic details and report it rather than repeatedly changing local settings.

How to prevent a repeat at the next live event

  • Test the event page earlier in the day on the device you will actually use.
  • Prefer Ethernet for a television or desktop when practical; otherwise place the device where the Wi-Fi signal is strongest.
  • Finish operating-system, browser, app, and GPU-driver updates before the broadcast, then restart.
  • Stop scheduled backups and large downloads for the duration of the show.
  • Keep the player on Auto unless you have confirmed that a manual quality remains stable under the household’s normal load.
  • Choose default latency when uninterrupted viewing matters more than seeing the show a few seconds sooner.
  • Keep a second device or network available so you can quickly tell whether a failure is local or event-wide.
