If btop shows only your own processes, omits command lines, or reports denied reads under /proc, do not start by running the whole monitor as root. First separate a display filter from an access-control problem. A filter can hide rows with no error; Linux procfs policy, process-read capability checks, a restricted package setup, or a container PID namespace can prevent btop from reading another process’s details.
The safest fix is the narrowest one approved for the host: clear an accidental filter, inspect procfs policy, then use btop’s documented capability or setuid setup only when cross-user process access or signal sending is actually required. Those mechanisms change privilege boundaries and are not guaranteed to solve every system.
What the symptom tells you
btop is a terminal resource monitor for CPU, memory, disks, network, and processes. Its process panel needs to enumerate process IDs and read per-process files under /proc/<PID>. Different failures point to different causes.
| What you observe | Most likely area | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Your processes are visible, but another user’s processes or their details are absent | procfs policy or process-data access checks | Inspect hidepid=, any gid= exception, and host security policy. |
btop explicitly reports a denied read from /proc |
Installed privilege setup combined with procfs restrictions | Check the build and packaging instructions for the exact btop binary. |
| Rows disappear without an access error | Process filter or display configuration | Clear the active filter and inspect the process panel configuration. |
| The process list is complete, but Intel GPU or CPU-wattage values are unavailable | SYSFS or hardware-monitoring permissions | Treat hardware readings as a separate capability/SYSFS issue. |
Also note whether whole rows are missing or only fields such as command lines, executable paths, environment data, or open-file details. A process can be listed while individual fields remain unreadable because each procfs entry has its own access check.

Build a symptom record before changing anything
Write down the btop version, executable path, Linux distribution or host image, account running btop, and the exact error text. Record one process owned by your account that displays normally and one system or cross-user process that does not. Note whether the problem affects every other user, only services, or only one field. This small record prevents a permission change from masking a filter or namespace problem and gives an administrator enough context to review the request.
First-line checks that do not change privileges
1. Reproduce the symptom with a known process
Record the exact btop message, the account running btop, and whether a process owned by that account appears normally. Compare one of your processes with a system service or a process owned by another user. This distinguishes a general collection failure from a cross-user read restriction.
2. Clear process filtering
btop can start with an initial process filter. The documented command-line controls are -f or --filter. Open the process panel, remove its current filter using the clear/reset action shown by your installed version, and check sorting and selection settings. If you launch btop with a filter, use the syntax accepted by that version and an empty filter when supported; do not assume a filter problem is a permission problem.
Recommended Free Tools
A filter can make a single service, user, or name pattern disappear while every underlying procfs read succeeds. Conversely, clearing a filter cannot restore a row that btop cannot read. Test with a deliberately broad view before escalating privileges.
3. Use debug output when the cause is unclear
Launch with -d or --debug to enable additional logs and metrics. A debug run can show whether btop is failing while collecting process data or whether the panel is simply excluding rows. Keep the output and exact btop version when asking an administrator or distributor for help.
4. Check configuration selection
The -c or --config option selects a configuration file, while --default-config prints the default configuration. Compare the active configuration with the default if behavior changed after copying a config file or upgrading. The option names and their meanings are documented in the btop(1) manpage, dated 2025-05-01.
5. Check whether the view is actually the process panel you expect
Sorting, selection, and panel layout can make a process easy to miss even when it is present. Search for the same process by a stable name or process ID, then reset the panel state and compare. If only command-line text is absent while the row remains, treat that as a per-field read problem rather than a process-enumeration failure.

How Linux procfs can hide other users’ processes
Linux controls visibility through the procfs mount. The kernel’s “The /proc Filesystem” documentation describes the hidepid mount option:
hidepid=1restricts access to other users’ process directories. Directory entries may be visible, but files inside those directories are protected.hidepid=2also hides other users’ process directories from directory listings, so those process IDs appear not to exist to an unprivileged user.gid=designates a group whose members may obtain information otherwise restricted byhidepid.
These are host-wide policy decisions, not btop settings. A privacy-hardened server may intentionally use them to limit exposure of command lines and process metadata. Making btop’s list look complete is not, by itself, a reason to weaken that policy.

Inspect the active mount options
Run:
findmnt -no OPTIONS /proc
Look for hidepid= and gid=. If the command reports a deliberate restriction, ask the system administrator which account or group is approved to inspect process data. Do not copy a remount command from another distribution: boot configuration, systemd mount units, containers, and security tooling can all determine how procfs is mounted.
Remember that a mount option can explain why a process ID is absent before btop ever tries to read its details. If hidepid=2 is active, an ordinary user may have no directory entry to inspect. With hidepid=1, a directory can be visible while files inside it still reject reads. These produce different-looking symptoms in btop but share the same host policy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Reading another process’s individual /proc/PID/* entries is subject to Linux access checks. Depending on the entry and the system’s security configuration, access can require a suitable read mode together with CAP_SYS_PTRACE; documented performance-related cases can involve CAP_PERFMON. A successful directory listing therefore does not prove that every command line, executable path, or metric is readable.
Mandatory access-control frameworks, user namespaces, and a distribution’s hardening choices can impose additional restrictions. If only selected fields are missing, identify the exact field before changing privileges. Granting broad access to every procfs entry is a larger change than enabling the one btop feature you need.
This distinction also explains why two monitors on the same host can show different columns. Each program may request different procfs files, and each request is checked separately. A visible process name does not guarantee access to its command line, executable link, environment, file descriptors, or performance counters.
btop’s optional capability and setuid setup
The upstream btop README describes an optional capability or setuid setup. It says:
“Enables signal sending to any process without starting with
sudoand can prevent /proc read permissions problems on some systems.”
Two qualifications matter: the README says can, not “always does,” and it applies only on some systems. It is not a blanket promise that every missing process detail will appear.
Capabilities versus setuid
Linux capabilities can grant narrowly defined powers to an executable instead of making the entire program run with full root privileges. A setuid installation is broader: the executable starts with the file owner’s effective identity, normally root. Both require administrator approval and careful control of the binary, its ownership, and replacement process.

For a source installation, the README documents these targets:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →make setcap
make setuid
Run only the method supported by the exact source tree and installation procedure you used. Distribution packages may place btop elsewhere, apply their own patches, or deliberately omit these targets. Verify that you are changing the intended btop binary rather than a similarly named copy, and keep the package manager’s update and removal behavior in mind.
What these mechanisms are actually for
- Cross-user process access: a capability setup may prevent procfs read-permission failures on systems where the required checks permit it.
- Signal sending: the README specifically connects the setup with signaling any process without launching btop through
sudo. - Intel GPU and CPU wattage monitoring: the project states that the setup is required for these features, which depend on readable SYSFS data. This is separate from whether the process list is complete.
Do not install a privilege mechanism merely because a hardware panel is empty if your real need is process visibility, or vice versa.
Requirements before enabling either method
- Administrator approval for the executable or mount-policy change.
- A verified path to the intended btop binary and a record of its package or source origin.
- Ownership and replacement controls so an untrusted user cannot substitute the privileged file.
- A rollback plan for package upgrades, removal, or a change in monitoring requirements.
- A defined purpose: reading cross-user details, sending signals, Intel GPU metrics, CPU wattage, or a combination.
If you cannot state which requirement is failing, do not add privilege yet. A capability intended for hardware counters may not address a procfs privacy policy, while a procfs group allowance may expose information to more tools than intended.
A conservative repair procedure
- Identify the installation route. Record whether btop came from a distribution package, a source checkout, or a manually copied binary. Capture its version and path. The rolling upstream README and a distribution package can describe different targets and security choices.
- Confirm the failure without changing privilege. Recheck your own process, another user’s process, and the exact missing field. Remove filters and run a debug session before making system changes.
- Inspect procfs policy. Use
findmnt -no OPTIONS /proc. Ifhidepid=1orhidepid=2is intentional, consult the administrator about the designatedgid=group or another approved monitoring account. - Choose the smallest approved scope. If only btop needs the access, an administrator may prefer the project’s documented capability setup. If several approved monitoring tools need visibility, a procfs group policy may be more appropriate. The choice affects who can see process data and whether the change survives package updates.
- Apply the build-specific method. For an upstream source build, use the README’s supported
make setcapormake setuidtarget, not an improvised permission command. For a packaged build, follow that distribution’s packaging documentation and verify the package-owned file before and after the change. - Test the original case. Restart btop, clear any filter, and check the same process and detail field. Confirm that signal operations and hardware readings work only if those were part of the approved goal.
- Document and review. Record the binary path, privilege mechanism, administrator approval, and package-update implications. Remove a capability or revert a setuid installation when the operational need ends.
After an update, repeat the verification. Package managers can replace the executable and remove file capabilities, and a rebuilt source binary may not inherit the previous setup. Treat a later regression as a deployment-state change first, not proof that btop’s process collector has changed.
Choosing between a btop change and a procfs policy change
| Decision factor | Application-level capability or setuid | Procfs group or mount-policy change |
|---|---|---|
| Security scope | Privileges are attached to the btop executable; the exact scope depends on the mechanism. | Visibility can extend to every approved tool and user covered by the procfs policy. |
| Who gains access | Users who can execute the modified btop binary may gain the associated abilities. | Members of the designated group, or users allowed by the mount policy, gain access to restricted process information. |
| Best fit | A single approved monitor needs signaling, procfs reads, or hardware metrics. | An operations policy intentionally grants process visibility to a monitoring group. |
| Persistence and packaging | May be overwritten or invalidated by package updates or binary replacement. | Depends on boot-time mount configuration, systemd units, container setup, and administrator policy. |
| Main risk | Casual setuid use can grant broader privilege than intended; capabilities still need review. | Changing hidepid can expose command lines and metadata to more users than intended. |
There is no universally correct choice. Base it on whether the requirement is process details, signal sending, Intel GPU data, CPU wattage, or visibility for a wider monitoring group.
Questions to settle with an administrator
- Should ordinary users see command lines and service relationships at all?
- Is there an existing monitoring group represented by the procfs
gid=option? - Must the permission survive reboot and package updates?
- Is btop allowed to signal processes, or should it remain read-only?
- Does the host run containers or user namespaces that make host-wide visibility inappropriate?
These answers determine whether an application-specific privilege, a group policy, or no change is the correct outcome.
When the process panel is fine but hardware data is missing
Intel GPU monitoring and CPU wattage monitoring rely on SYSFS data and have their own permission requirements. The upstream README links the optional capability or setuid setup to those readings. If every expected process is visible but one hardware widget is blank, investigate SYSFS access and the support of your kernel and hardware rather than changing the process filter or procfs mount.
Keep the symptoms separate in an incident record: “other users’ command lines unavailable” and “CPU wattage unavailable” may require different approvals and different fixes.

Container and namespace limitations
Inside a container, btop normally sees the container’s PID namespace rather than the host’s complete process tree. A perfectly readable procfs can therefore contain only the processes visible in that namespace. Container security profiles can also restrict procfs reads or capabilities. Before modifying the host or adding file privileges, confirm whether the missing process belongs to the host or to the container’s namespace and follow the platform administrator’s policy.
Do not infer a host permission failure from a container-only view. The container may need an explicitly approved process namespace, capability, or monitoring design, and those changes can affect every workload sharing that boundary.

Running sudo btop as the permanent solution
Starting an interactive monitor as root may make more data appear, but it bypasses the question of whether a narrower, auditable permission is available. Use it only as an administrator-approved diagnostic comparison, not as an automatic fix for every error.
Disabling hidepid without checking why it exists
A hardened host may intentionally protect command lines, users, and service relationships. Replacing that policy can create a privacy or compliance problem even if btop looks better. Ask for the approved group or monitoring account instead.

Assuming every missing row is a filter
Filters explain silent omissions, not explicit denied reads. Conversely, a permission change cannot restore rows intentionally excluded by a filter. Always classify the symptom first.
Expecting capabilities to override every security layer
Capabilities do not automatically defeat all procfs mount options, mandatory access controls, namespace boundaries, or per-entry checks. If the approved setup does not restore a specific field, return to the exact access error and host policy instead of stacking more privilege.
Forgetting the update and rollback path
A privileged file that is replaced during an upgrade can silently lose its capability or setuid state. Record the expected state, test after updates, and remove the mechanism when the monitoring requirement ends. Leaving an old privilege in place is a security problem even if btop no longer needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does btop show my processes but not another user’s?
The host may use procfs hidepid=1 or hidepid=2, or the individual procfs reads may fail Linux access checks. Inspect findmnt -no OPTIONS /proc and ask the administrator about an approved gid= group or monitoring account.
Can I fix every btop permission error by running sudo btop?
No. Root may be useful as an approved diagnostic comparison, but it is a broad and persistent workaround. First clear filters, identify the missing field, inspect procfs policy, and choose the narrowest approved remedy.
What does btop’s --filter option do?
-f or --filter sets the initial process filter. An accidental filter can hide rows without any permission error, so clear it before changing privileges.
What is the difference between hidepid=1 and hidepid=2?
hidepid=1 restricts access to files in other users’ process directories. hidepid=2 also hides those directories from listings, making the process IDs appear absent to ordinary users.
Will btop’s capability setup always reveal missing process details?
No. The upstream README says it can prevent procfs read-permission problems on some systems. Per-entry checks, mandatory access controls, namespace boundaries, and mount policy can still limit particular fields.
When should I use make setcap or make setuid?
Those are upstream source-install targets, not universal commands for package binaries. Use them only with the matching source tree, administrator approval, verified binary path, and a rollback plan. Distribution packages may use different mechanisms.
Why is the process list complete but CPU wattage or Intel GPU data missing?
Those readings depend on readable SYSFS data and have separate capability requirements. Treat the hardware symptom independently from process visibility and follow the installed build’s documentation.
Could a container explain missing host processes?
Yes. btop generally sees the container’s PID namespace, which may contain only container processes. Container security profiles can also restrict procfs reads. Confirm the namespace before changing host permissions.
The Bottom Line
Classify the failure before granting privilege. Clear filters, compare your own and cross-user processes, inspect hidepid and gid, then follow the exact package or source-build guidance. Use btop capabilities, setuid, or a procfs policy change only when an administrator has approved the required scope, and retest after updates or container changes.
