A LineageOS boot loop or installation error does not have one safe, universal fix. The correct recovery depends on the exact phone model and codename, LineageOS build, recovery version, stock firmware, point of failure, and the precise screen or command output. Stop before repeating a failed step, open the matching official LineageOS device guide, and use that page as the authority for partitions, firmware, recovery commands, and any required data wipe.
This guide helps you classify the failure and avoid common mistakes. It deliberately does not prescribe a generic flash or wipe sequence for an unspecified phone.
Stop and identify the failure before changing anything
Write down these details while the phone is still in its current state:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Manufacturer, retail model number, and LineageOS codename.
- LineageOS version and the exact build or package filename.
- Recovery name and version.
- Whether the phone is in recovery, bootloader/fastboot, or the animated LineageOS startup screen.
- The complete error text on the phone and in the computer terminal.
- The stock Android version and firmware or vendor package installed immediately before LineageOS.
- Whether every prerequisite in the device guide was completed, including any required firmware update.
These are not administrative details. Device codenames can cover only particular model numbers, and a recovery or firmware intended for another model can make the problem worse. The LineageOS Wiki installation guide for 10.or G states, Do not continue after something fails. Treat that as a safety rule for every device: stop at the failed step, record what happened, and return to the exact guide.

Recognize which kind of failure you have
The same phone may show very different symptoms depending on whether the computer-to-phone connection failed or Android itself cannot start. Use the phone’s current screen as the first branch in your diagnosis.
| Current state | What it usually tells you | Safe next check |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery menu | The recovery environment is running, so recovery instructions and its own result messages are the most relevant evidence. | Read the exact recovery result and compare the next step with the matching device guide. |
| Bootloader or fastboot screen | The phone has not reached Android; a computer connection, driver, cable, port, or flashing step may be involved. | Run the guide’s device-detection command and check whether the phone is listed before sending another command. |
| Repeated restart or boot animation | The installation reached the boot stage but Android is not completing startup. | Recheck model, firmware, recovery, package, and add-on order. Do not assume a factory reset is harmless. |
| First boot appears motionless | Some guides allow a longer first startup than a normal reboot. | Use the time expectation on your own device page; the 15-minute guidance cited below applies only to one device guide. |

Confirm the model and codename
Open the LineageOS Wiki page for the phone’s exact codename and check the model numbers listed there. Do not substitute a guide because the phone looks similar, has the same processor, or uses the same Android version. The recovery image, partition names, firmware requirements, and button sequences can differ between variants.
If you cannot determine the codename, stay in the bootloader or recovery screen and use the identification information shown there. The manufacturer’s model number, carrier variant, and regional edition are more useful than a marketing family name. If those identifiers do not match the supported models on the official page, stop and resolve that mismatch before flashing anything else.

Verify the stock firmware prerequisite
Required firmware is device-specific and can change between LineageOS releases. For example, the sunfish installation guide requires Android 13 stock firmware before installing its LineageOS build. That page warns that using the wrong firmware may cause installation failure, crashes after installation, or permanent device damage. Android 13 is not a general requirement for every LineageOS phone; it is the prerequisite stated on that sunfish page.
Compare the firmware version on the phone with the version named on your own guide. If the prerequisite was missed, do not guess at a vendor image or copy a firmware package from another codename. Follow the guide’s exact method for restoring or updating the required stock firmware, and stop if that step fails.

Check recovery, package, and release alignment
Use the recovery recommended by the exact device page, at the version and location specified there. A recovery supplied by another project may expose different menus or handle dynamic partitions differently. Also confirm that the LineageOS package was downloaded for the same codename and release family as the guide you are following.
If the guide requires a particular recovery boot or installation order, do not insert an extra wipe, image, or script from a tutorial for another phone. The available official instructions do not establish one rescue sequence that is safe across all devices.

- Record the failed operation. Note whether it was booting recovery, unlocking or entering fastboot, flashing an image, installing the LineageOS ZIP, or installing an optional package.
- Compare completed steps line by line. Reopen the exact official device guide and verify the model, firmware prerequisite, recovery, downloaded package, and command syntax.
- Check the phone’s mode. A command for recovery will not work in bootloader mode, and a fastboot command will not work when the phone is only exposing ADB in recovery.
- Read the device-side result. A host terminal can report a transfer condition while recovery reports success or failure. The recovery result determines whether the package was accepted.
- Repeat only an explicitly documented step. If the guide says to stop after a failure, seek device-specific help instead of improvising a partition flash.
When fastboot shows no device
If fastboot devices returns no output, the computer has not established a usable fastboot connection. Check the operating-system driver or permission setup required by your platform, use a known-good data cable, try another USB port, and confirm that the phone remains on the bootloader screen. Re-run the guide’s detection command after each change.
The 10.or G guide gives a narrow hardware tip for certain hangs: check the cable and port, preferably using a USB Type-A 2.0 cable or a USB hub. That advice is for a host-connection problem, not a cure for an Android boot loop or a bad LineageOS package. A cable should be considered only when the computer cannot see the phone in fastboot; it cannot repair an operating-system installation by itself.
When fastboot hangs during a command
Do not unplug the phone repeatedly while a documented operation is still running. First determine whether the command is waiting for a device, waiting for a reboot, or has returned an error. Check the cable, USB port, drivers, and the exact command in your device guide. If the guide’s step still fails, stop rather than switching to a different image or codename.

Understand the confusing ADB sideload messages
Some official LineageOS pages describe a normal-looking sideload transfer that stops around 47 percent and prints one of these host-side messages:
adb: failed to read command: Successadb: failed to read command: No erroradb: failed to read command: Undefined error: 0
The 10.or G guide and the z2_plus upgrade guide explain that this output can occur even when the sideload operation succeeds. The percentage and wording come from the host’s transfer process, so do not declare failure from that message alone.
Instead, look at recovery. Did recovery display a successful installation result? Did it return to the expected menu? Did the guide instruct you to install an add-on or reboot next? Continue only when the recovery state matches the official sequence. An explicit recovery failure, an unfamiliar error, or a device that never reaches the expected state needs diagnosis for that exact codename; the 47-percent note does not override a failure reported on the phone.
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop
A boot loop can be a repeated restart, a device that returns to recovery, or an animation that never reaches the lock screen. Several different conditions can produce the same symptom, so treat it as a decision point rather than proof that wiping data will help.
Recheck prerequisites before wiping
- Confirm the exact supported model and codename.
- Confirm the required stock firmware or vendor version.
- Confirm that the recommended recovery was used and that it can read the package you installed.
- Confirm that the package came from the official LineageOS download path for that codename and release.
- Review whether any optional add-on was installed, and whether it was installed at the point required by the guide.
The current official guidance does not establish one universal combination of partition flashes, cache wipes, or factory resets for an unspecified phone. Applying a sequence written for another model can remove the recovery or boot-critical data you still need.

Consider add-ons as a possible trigger
Some recoveries offer extra applications or services during installation. The flo installation guide and the zerofltexx installation guide warn that add-ons or recovery-offered apps and services can cause boot loops. Whether that warning applies to your phone depends on its own page and release.
Google Apps packages, when supported and desired, must be installed in the order stated by the device guide. In the cited earth installation sequence, the add-on is installed before the first boot. Do not add it after Android has already started unless your guide specifically says that is safe.
Understand the cost of Format data or factory reset
A recovery menu item labelled Format data or factory reset is destructive. The earth guide explicitly warns that formatting data deletes all files stored in internal storage. That can include photographs, downloads, backups, and files you intended to use for recovery. It is not equivalent to clearing a temporary cache.
Only perform a data format when the exact device guide calls for it, and only after confirming that anything important has been copied elsewhere. Read the guide’s warning about encryption and internal storage before accepting the confirmation screen. If the guide does not call for a format, do not use it as a generic boot-loop remedy.

Use your own device page’s expectation where one is provided. While waiting, keep the phone connected to reliable power and avoid interrupting it repeatedly. If it remains on the animation beyond the guide’s stated limit, return to the diagnostic branches above: verify firmware, recovery, package, and add-on order before choosing any destructive action.
Use the phone’s mode to choose the next question
Recovery is available
Photograph or transcribe the recovery result, then check the exact next step in the device guide. If recovery reports a package verification or installation error, do not infer that a host-side 47-percent message was harmless; the device-side result takes precedence. If you need to format data, read the storage warning and confirm that the guide requires it.
Only bootloader or fastboot is available
Start with connection detection, not with another image. Check drivers, permissions, cable, and USB port, then verify the codename and firmware requirement. A blank fastboot devices result means the computer has not detected the phone; it does not identify the cause of an Android boot loop.
The phone restarts continuously
Try to enter the documented recovery or bootloader mode using the key combination listed for your model. Do not rely on a button sequence copied from another phone. Once a stable mode is available, stop and compare the installation state with the official guide.
When to stop and ask for device-specific help
Ask for help instead of experimenting when any of these conditions applies:
- The model number does not match the supported list for the codename.
- The required stock firmware version is unknown or was not installed.
- The recommended recovery will not boot or cannot see the package.
- The bootloader is detected inconsistently or not at all after cable, port, and driver checks.
- Recovery reports an error that is not explained on the device page.
- The phone remains in a boot loop beyond the first-boot expectation in its guide.
- A data format would erase files you have not backed up.
Include the manufacturer and model number, codename, LineageOS build, recovery version, stock firmware version, current mode, every completed guide step, and the complete error text. A photo of the phone screen and the unedited terminal output is more useful than a summary such as installation failed.
Examples of device-specific limits
| Device guide | Specific point established by that page | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 10.or G | Stop when a step fails; check cable and port for an empty fastboot result; some sideload messages can appear around 47 percent despite success. | Use these instructions only for the 10.or G guide, while treating the stop-on-failure rule as a general safety principle. |
| sunfish | Android 13 stock firmware is required before installing the cited build; the page warns of installation failure, crashes, or permanent damage if the wrong firmware is used. | Verify the prerequisite on sunfish; do not transfer that Android version requirement to another phone. |
| earth | Formatting data deletes files in internal storage, and the cited sequence places supported add-ons before first boot. | Back up first and follow the exact order on the earth page. |
| flo | First boot is usually no longer than 15 minutes; the page also warns that some recovery add-ons can cause boot loops. | Use the time estimate and add-on warning only as flo-specific guidance. |
| zerofltexx | Some applications or services offered by recovery may cause boot loops. | Check whether the optional package was installed and whether the current zerofltexx instructions address it. |
Prevent the next installation error
- Read the complete device page before starting, including firmware and recovery prerequisites.
- Confirm the model number and codename twice before downloading files.
- Record the stock firmware or vendor version while the original system still boots.
- Charge the phone and use a reliable data cable and direct USB port for bootloader work.
- Keep the official guide open while performing each command, rather than combining steps from multiple devices.
- Save important internal-storage files before any operation that might format data.
- Install optional packages only at the point and in the order specified by the guide.
- Keep the exact terminal output and recovery result if anything fails.
The safest repair is therefore a controlled diagnosis: identify the phone and state, verify firmware and recovery against its current official guide, distinguish host-transfer messages from recovery results, and stop before any destructive step unless that guide explicitly requires it.
