First determine what “blurry” means in the photo. A soft background with a sharp face can be Portrait mode’s intended Bokeh effect; a soft face may be a focus miss; doubled edges or trails often point to HDR ghosting or movement. Compare the same stationary subject in regular Photo and Portrait modes, then change only the setting that matches the symptom.

The exact camera controls differ by Vivo model, software version, carrier and region. The steps below begin with checks that work regardless of the menu layout, then identify the controls that may be available on your phone.

Identify the kind of blur before changing settings

Look at the captured image at full size, not only at the live preview. Decide which description fits best:

What you see Most useful first check What it may indicate
The face or main subject is soft, while the background is also reasonably sharp Retake in regular Photo mode and tap the subject before shooting Focus was placed incorrectly, the phone moved, or the subject moved
The face is sharp but the background is soft Compare Photo and Portrait from the same position Portrait mode’s simulated Bokeh may be working as designed
Edges appear twice, with a second outline or a trail Repeat with HDR disabled if that control exists, and keep the subject still HDR ghosting or movement during the multi-frame capture
Nearly every part of the frame is smeared Test several stationary subjects in Photo mode General focus, camera or handling problem rather than portrait blur alone
A distant person in a selfie is soft while a nearer face is clearer Repeat the selfie without Portrait effects and compare distances Selfie depth and Portrait processing can leave distant people blurred

Vivo’s support indexes treat blurred pictures, inability to focus, distant people blurred in selfies, and ghosting in HDR or Ultra HD as separate camera questions. Treating them as separate symptoms prevents you from disabling a useful portrait effect when the real problem is movement or HDR.

Run a controlled Photo-versus-Portrait test

This comparison is the quickest way to tell whether the camera is generally missing focus or whether Portrait processing is producing the result you dislike. Use a stationary person or object, steady indoor or outdoor light, and a similar distance for both shots.

  1. Open the Camera app and select regular Photo mode.
  2. Frame the subject at a comfortable distance. Tap the face or the most important detail on the preview to place focus, then hold the phone steady through capture.
  3. Take the picture and inspect the saved image by zooming in on the eyes, text or another fine detail.
  4. Without changing the subject or lighting, switch to Portrait mode and take another picture from approximately the same position.
  5. Compare the subject and background separately. Note whether the same face is soft in both images, or only in Portrait.

If regular Photo is sharp and Portrait is not, concentrate on Portrait effects and subject separation rather than assuming the camera’s autofocus has failed. If both modes are soft across several stationary subjects, continue with the focus and steadiness checks below.

Vivo describes Portrait mode as applying “Bokeh, beauty, and other effects” to portraits. That wording matters: a Portrait result is processed differently from an ordinary Photo, so a difference between the two modes is evidence about the mode, not proof of a defective camera.

Fix a subject that is genuinely out of focus

Place focus deliberately

In regular Photo mode, tap the subject on the screen before pressing the shutter. Keep the phone aimed at that point until the image is captured. This is a general camera troubleshooting step, not a universal Vivo menu instruction; the appearance and behavior of the focus indicator vary by model and software.

Check the saved photograph at full size. A preview can look acceptable while the captured frame is soft, and a focus box on the screen does not guarantee that the final image is sharp.

Remove movement from the test

Ask a person to hold still for one comparison shot, or use a stationary object. Keep both hands on the phone and avoid changing position as you press the shutter. If a stationary subject is sharp but a walking person is not, the blur is more consistent with movement during capture than with a persistent focus failure.

Repeat with more than one subject

Photograph a nearby stationary subject and a second subject at a different distance in regular Photo mode. A single failed frame does not establish a hardware problem. If the same softness appears on multiple subjects, in multiple locations and in both Photo and Portrait, document those examples before contacting Vivo support.

When Portrait mode itself looks wrong

Reduce the simulated background blur

Portrait mode may expose a Bokeh or blur-strength control. If the person’s face and clothing are clear but the background looks unnaturally soft, reduce the Bokeh value or turn the effect off if your model offers that option. Take another image and compare it with regular Photo.

Controls are not consistent across the Vivo range. A manual may describe Bokeh while your model, carrier build or region uses a different label, places the control behind an effects button, or does not offer adjustment at all. A missing Bokeh control is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the camera is malfunctioning.

Temporarily remove beauty and other effects

Portrait mode can combine background processing with beauty or other appearance effects. Set beauty to its lowest value or disable it temporarily when that control is available. Retake the same stationary subject. If the face becomes clearer, re-enable effects one at a time so you can identify which processing produces the unwanted softness.

Check the boundary between subject and background

Portrait processing has to distinguish the person from the background. Fine hair, glasses, fingers, patterned clothing and objects close to the subject can be rendered less cleanly than a simple outline. Use the Photo-versus-Portrait test to determine whether the softness is confined to those boundaries or affects the face itself. If the face is sharp and only the boundary or background is soft, it is a Portrait rendering issue rather than a general focus miss.

Recognize and test for HDR ghosting

Ghosting looks different from ordinary out-of-focus blur. Look for a doubled contour around a head, hand or high-contrast object, or a faint trail beside a moving subject. Vivo lists ghosting in HDR or Ultra HD as a separate camera issue.

HDR can combine more than one exposure. If the subject moves between those exposures, the resulting contours may not align. That explanation is a diagnostic interpretation of the doubled-edge symptom; it is not a claim that every soft image is HDR ghosting.

Disable HDR when the control is available

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Look for the HDR control on the shooting screen.
  3. Tap HDR to disable it, then photograph the same subject again while keeping the phone and subject still.
  4. Compare the new image with the earlier HDR frame, paying attention to doubled edges.

Vivo UAE’s camera FAQ gives the Camera-then-HDR path for supported phones. The control may not appear on every Vivo device, and some versions may place HDR in another camera panel. If you cannot find it, do not infer that your model supports the same switch; use the model-specific manual or support page.

If disabling HDR removes the doubled outline, leave HDR off for moving subjects or use it only when the scene and subject are still. If the image remains uniformly soft with no doubled edges, return to the focus checks instead.

Understand soft backgrounds and distant people in selfies

A soft background can be intentional

Portrait mode is designed to separate a person from the background and apply Bokeh. A sharp face with a soft background is therefore not automatically a fault. Compare the same framing in regular Photo mode before changing camera settings.

Distant people may not be treated as the main subject

Vivo support separately addresses cases where people in the distance are blurred in selfies. When one nearer face is selected as the portrait subject, a more distant person may fall outside the intended focus or depth treatment. Test this by taking one selfie in regular Photo mode, without Portrait effects, and another in Portrait mode from the same position. Keep both people still and compare their faces individually.

If the distant person is clear in Photo but soft in Portrait, the result is mode-specific. If both people are soft in every mode, use the general focus and steadiness procedure and test another scene.

Use a symptom-based decision path

Follow the branch that matches your test results:

  • Only the Portrait image is wrong: lower or disable Bokeh, beauty and other effects that your model exposes, then repeat the comparison in regular Photo mode.
  • Both Photo and Portrait are soft on the same stationary subject: tap the subject to focus, hold the phone steady, inspect the saved file and repeat with other subjects and distances.
  • Edges are doubled or trailing: test with the subject still and HDR disabled when the HDR control is available.
  • The face is sharp but the background is soft: treat this as expected Portrait processing until a Photo-mode comparison shows otherwise.
  • Only moving subjects are blurred: repeat with a stationary subject. A sharp stationary result points toward motion during capture rather than a constant focus fault.
  • Distant people in selfies are soft: compare regular Photo and Portrait selfies and check whether the nearer face is the one receiving portrait treatment.

Account for Vivo model and software differences

There is no single Vivo camera menu that applies to every phone. The name, location and availability of Portrait, Bokeh, beauty and HDR controls can change with the model, software version, carrier firmware and region. Vivo manuals explicitly qualify camera features this way.

Use the instructions above as a diagnostic sequence, not as a promise that every label will be present. When a control is missing:

  • Confirm that you are in the camera mode where the control is normally relevant.
  • Check the phone’s exact model manual or the support page for its region.
  • Record the software version and camera mode when describing the problem to support.
  • Do not install a third-party camera app or buy an accessory merely because a menu item is absent; the feature may simply be unsupported on that model.

Changing settings at random makes the cause harder to identify. Alter one variable, take a comparison image, and keep the sharper or cleaner result as your reference.

When to escalate a persistent focus problem

Contact Vivo’s support channel for the exact model and region when several subjects remain out of focus in both regular Photo and Portrait mode after you have tapped to focus and held the phone steady. Include original sample files if the support channel accepts them, and describe whether the problem is soft detail, doubled edges, or Portrait-only background processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vivo’s published FAQ indexes expose questions about blurred pictures, inability to focus, clear photos, portrait framing, distant people in selfies and HDR ghosting, but the index headings do not establish one universal repair sequence or a universal hardware diagnosis. Do not treat a single blurry frame as proof that a camera module must be replaced, and do not perform a reset unless instructions for your exact model tell you to do so.

Prevent blurry Portrait shots on future photos

  • Make a quick Photo-mode comparison when a Portrait result looks suspicious.
  • Tap the important subject before capture and keep the phone steady through the shutter.
  • Use a stationary person or object when testing a setting.
  • Inspect the saved image, not only the live preview.
  • Lower or disable Bokeh and beauty effects when the face is sharp but processing looks excessive.
  • For doubled contours, test HDR off when your phone provides that control.
  • For selfies with several people, check whether a distant face is being treated as background.
  • Record your Vivo model, software version, carrier and region before looking for model-specific menu instructions.

What a successful diagnosis looks like

You have isolated the cause when one controlled change produces a repeatable difference: regular Photo is sharp while Portrait is soft; lowering Bokeh changes only the background treatment; HDR off removes doubled contours; or a stationary subject is sharp while a moving subject is not. If no comparison produces a clear difference and multiple modes and subjects remain soft, stop changing settings and provide those consistent examples to Vivo support for model-specific assistance.
