First work out whether the blur affects the whole screen, text in several apps, or just one app or website. That distinction points to the right fix: display settings for a whole-screen problem, text rendering for fuzzy letter edges, and app or browser controls when the problem is limited to one place. Avoid changing resolution or buying a cable until you have narrowed down the cause.
Why does text look blurry on my screen?
“Blurry” can describe different problems: letter edges may look fuzzy, text may be too small to read comfortably, or the whole image may be distorted. Start by comparing the same kind of text in more than one app. If you are using an external monitor, also open its own on-screen settings menu. This is a way to narrow the problem, not proof of a particular cause.

Make one reversible change at a time and check the same content again. If you change several settings together, it becomes harder to tell which one helped or made the picture worse.

On an external display, compare a computer app with the monitor’s own settings menu. If the menu is crisp but the connected computer’s content is not, that makes the computer’s output settings worth checking. If the monitor menu also looks unclear, the issue may involve the display itself. Neither comparison proves a cause, but it helps you describe the problem accurately when seeking device-specific support.
How do I fix blurry text on a Windows monitor?
1. Set the display to its recommended resolution
Open Windows Display settings, select the monitor you want to adjust if more than one is connected, and check the Display resolution setting. Choose the option marked Recommended for that display. A monitor may support lower resolutions, but Microsoft notes that running below its native resolution can make text less sharp or make the picture look stretched or centered. Resolution and scaling are separate controls. Resolution is the pixel mode sent to the screen; scaling changes the apparent size of interface items. If everything is too small, check scaling rather than lowering the resolution. If a resolution change makes the image less clear, return to the recommended option.
Check which display is selected before changing anything if your computer is connected to more than one screen. The recommended mode is specific to the selected display; applying a setting intended for one screen to another can leave the image poorly sized or unclear. After choosing the recommended option, look at both text and non-text elements. A whole-image improvement points toward the display mode being relevant; if only letter edges remain fuzzy, continue to the text-rendering checks.
Do not use a lower resolution as a shortcut for making text appear larger. Resolution affects the pixel mode for the display and can make the image less sharp, stretched, or centered. Scaling affects the apparent size of interface items instead. If the problem is readability rather than blur, use an appropriate size or scaling control instead of sacrificing the display’s recommended resolution.
2. Tune text rendering if the resolution is correct
If letter edges remain fuzzy in multiple Windows apps while other screen content looks clear, try Windows’ ClearType tuning. Search Windows for Adjust ClearType text and follow the on-screen samples. Choose the sample that looks most comfortable on the monitor you actually use; do not assume one tuning result is best for every screen.
ClearType is a text-rendering option for LCD displays. Microsoft’s technical overview explains that it uses individual red, green, and blue subpixels to smooth the edges of letters. As Microsoft puts it, “No two screens are exactly the same and everyone perceives color in a slightly different way.” The tuning is therefore personal and screen-dependent, and the overview does not establish that every modern display or app uses the same rendering path.

Work through the samples at the distance and on the display where you normally read. Compare the letter shapes, not just the apparent darkness of the text; choose the sample that feels clearest and most comfortable. If the setting makes text look worse, run the tuning again or return to the earlier choice. ClearType is an option to test, not a guaranteed repair, and its relevance can depend on the display and the application.
Google Chrome Help’s Windows troubleshooting for “text that isn’t displaying properly” also lists changing font settings and turning off Smooth edges of screen fonts as options to try. Treat these as alternatives, not guaranteed improvements: test one at a time, then restore the previous setting if text becomes less comfortable to read. These adjustments are most relevant after you have checked resolution, especially if the issue is not limited to one app.
Because the Chrome Help procedure is for Windows, do not assume its instructions apply to a different operating system. And because the symptom may be specific to a browser, compare the same page with text in another app before changing a system-wide font setting. If the browser alone is affected, its settings or compatibility are more targeted places to investigate.
What if only one app or website looks blurry?
Compare the problem app with another app that displays similar text. If only one program is affected, check its own zoom, display, or text-rendering options and whether the problem appears with particular content. A system-wide font change is unlikely to be a reliable fix for an issue isolated to one app; the right remedy may depend on that app’s settings or compatibility.
Notice whether all text in the app is affected or only a particular panel, document, or item. If one page or type of content looks wrong while the rest of the app is clear, record that distinction before changing display settings. The app may have its own presentation controls, and an update or compatibility issue may require instructions specific to that software. The steps here do not establish a universal fix for every app.
If only one website is affected, try changing that page’s zoom or text size using the browser’s controls. W3C WAI’s How to Change Text Size or Colors explains that browser controls can resize text or zoom a page, but resizing may not work consistently on websites that do not meet accessibility guidelines. If enlarging text disrupts a particular page, restore the zoom and use that site’s own accessibility or display controls if available.
Browser zoom and text resizing can make a page easier to read without altering the display’s resolution. They are not identical to a system-wide font adjustment: they act on the page in the browser, and websites may respond differently. If one page becomes awkward or its layout changes, undo the adjustment rather than assuming you have damaged the display. Try the same control on another page to see whether the issue is specific to one site.

When the letters are crisp but uncomfortably small, use zoom or text-size controls rather than lowering display resolution. Resolution changes affect the image sent to the screen, not just the size of the page’s text.

How can I make iPhone text easier to read?
On iPhone, Apple documents these controls in its Adjust iPhone display and text settings guide. The guide surfaced as an iOS 26 page; menu wording or placement can differ in other iOS versions or regions.
- To enlarge text, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size, then move the slider.
- To make text heavier, open Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Bold Text.
- To enlarge the overall interface, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom > Larger Text, then tap Use Zoomed.
- For additional readability adjustments, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
Choose the control that matches the symptom. Text Size changes how large text appears; Bold Text changes its weight; Display Zoom enlarges the overall interface presentation. If type is clear but small, sizing or zoom is the more direct adjustment. If you are trying to address fuzzy edges, these controls may make text easier to see, but they do not correct a display fault.
Apple’s menu route is specific to the iPhone guide and its software context. If the labels on your phone differ, check your iOS version and Apple’s instructions for that version rather than assuming a missing option means something is broken. These options change text size, weight, zoom, or related presentation. They can help when text is hard to read, but they do not repair a physically damaged screen.
Why is my external monitor text blurry?
If the monitor’s whole image is blurry, distorted, or unclear—not just text—check the connected device’s output settings and the physical connection before changing font settings. Samsung Support’s Blurry text on Samsung monitor troubleshooting advises checking the connected device’s resolution and refresh rate, display scaling and text-readability settings, and the cable or connection.
- Check resolution: Set the connected device to the resolution recommended for the monitor.
- Check refresh rate: Review the rate selected for the connected display and confirm it is appropriate for that monitor.
- Review scaling and text-readability settings: If the picture is clear but elements are too small, adjust their apparent size rather than choosing a lower resolution.
- Inspect the connection: Check that the cable is seated securely and that the connection is not visibly damaged. Consider another cable only if the checks point to a connection problem.
A cable replacement or new monitor is not a universal remedy. If the monitor’s own menu is also blurry, or a problem remains after checking settings and connections, the cause may require device-specific display or hardware diagnosis.
Check these items separately and compare the image after each change. Resolution, refresh rate, scaling, text-readability settings, and the physical connection are different checks; changing all of them at once can obscure which one mattered. If a setting makes the image worse, restore the previous value. A cable is worth considering when inspection or testing points to a connection problem—not simply because text looks fuzzy.

There is no general requirement to buy a new cable, monitor, or software utility to try the built-in display checks described here. If basic settings and the connection appear correct but the symptom persists, seek guidance for the exact display and connected device before paying for a replacement or repair. A technician or manufacturer support can help determine whether service is justified for that particular case.
What about Mac or Android?
Menu paths and text-rendering behavior depend on the operating system and version. The support steps described above cover Windows, Chrome on Windows, and iPhone. They are not instructions for macOS or Android. If you use one of those platforms, first identify whether the problem affects all content, several apps, or one app or website, then consult support instructions for the precise device and software version rather than applying a Windows or iPhone route by analogy.

This distinction matters because a setting with a similar name may live in a different place or work differently across systems. The general diagnostic approach still helps: separate a whole-display problem from text-only blur, clear-but-small type, and an issue isolated to one app or site. But use platform-specific steps before making changes you cannot easily identify or reverse.

Stop and return to the last comfortable setting if an adjustment makes text harder to read or distorts the image. A problem that persists across apps after checking the recommended resolution and relevant text settings may need support for the exact computer, display, or app. If the symptom is isolated to one app, use its specific troubleshooting rather than assuming the monitor is at fault. If it affects the whole screen, describe the connected device, display, selected resolution and refresh rate, and whether the monitor’s own menu looks clear when seeking help.
Windows, browser, and phone menu paths depend on software version, while display behavior can also vary by screen. If these steps do not match your device or the symptom persists, identify the operating system, device model, app or browser, and whether the blur affects all content or only text before following more specific instructions.
There is no single setting that is appropriate for every screen. Start with the least disruptive check that fits the symptom, record what you changed, and undo it if the result is worse. This keeps troubleshooting reversible and makes it easier to explain what you have already tried to a support team. If the problem began after a device-specific change or appears alongside broader display distortion, ask for diagnosis rather than repeatedly changing unrelated font controls.

How do I fix fuzzy text in Windows?
