First work out whether the problem is blur or framing: sharpening can improve the appearance of edges in the existing photo, while expanding the canvas adds generated content beyond its original boundaries. If cropping would remove something important, expand the composition instead. Keep the original, make a modest correction, and inspect the result at the size it will actually be viewed or printed. Neither sharpening nor generative fill can guarantee recovery of detail that was never captured.
Decide whether the photo needs sharpening or more room
A soft-looking image and a poorly framed image can occur together, but they are different problems and need different edits. Sharpening changes how existing edges and details appear. Canvas expansion gives the picture more room by filling areas outside its original frame. Choosing the wrong fix can make the image less convincing: sharpening will not create breathing room around a tightly framed subject, and cropping to improve composition can remove details you meant to keep.
Start by asking what you want to preserve. If the subject fits within the frame but looks out of focus, try a controlled sharpening or unblur feature. If the image cuts off a person, object, or useful context at the edge, try expansion rather than trimming away more of the photo. If both issues are present, deal with them separately and inspect the result after each edit.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Blur is the main problem: try modest sharpening or a supported Unblur feature, then check for noise and artifacts.
- The framing is too tight: extend the canvas and fill the new area; do not crop away the existing subject detail you want to retain.
- Both are problems: correct the blur conservatively, then expand the frame and inspect the generated edges.
These edits can improve how a photo looks, but they do not establish what was originally outside the frame or reliably restore information absent from the source image. Keep an untouched original so you can compare, undo, or choose a more restrained edit.

A useful decision test is to ask whether the needed improvement concerns pixels already inside the frame or space beyond it. If the face, lettering, or object you want to preserve is present but soft, test sharpening. If the picture feels cramped because there is too little room around that subject, test expansion. If both apply, make and review one kind of edit before moving to the other; otherwise it becomes harder to tell which change helped or introduced an artifact.
What sharpening can—and cannot—fix
Sharpening adjusts the apparent definition of edges in the pixels already present. It may help a mildly soft image look clearer, but a stronger setting is not automatically a better repair. A high-zoom preview can encourage overcorrection; judge the result at its intended viewing size as well as close up. Look for distracting grain, halos, rough edges, or details that appear unnaturally emphasized.
Sharpening is not the same as recovering the original scene. If the source has little usable detail, enhancement cannot guarantee a faithful reconstruction of what was lost. A result that looks crisp is not proof that its newly apparent texture or fine detail was recorded by the camera.

An enhanced edge or texture may make the image look more legible, but it cannot establish which fine detail was truly captured. For casual viewing, a restrained improvement may be useful; for evidence, documentation, or a decision that depends on exact detail, retain the unedited file and do not treat enhancement as verification.
Lightroom AI Sharpen and manual controls
Adobe documents Lightroom AI Sharpen with Default and Strong options. Compare both on the same image rather than assuming that Strong is the correct choice. Lightroom also offers manual Detail controls, including Texture, Clarity, Radius, Detail, and Masking. These controls provide a manual route when you want to adjust the appearance of edges and details rather than rely only on an AI strength option. Adobe’s overview of its AI image sharpener is at Using the AI image sharpener in Lightroom.
Noise matters, especially in a low-light photo. Lightroom’s documented AI enhancement workflow can optionally apply denoising. Compare the image with and without that treatment: reducing noise may help, but the goal is not to erase natural texture or make the subject look artificially smooth. The best balance depends on the source and the final display or print size.

When comparing Default and Strong, use the same crop and viewing scale for both, and pay attention to the subject rather than only the most detailed background area. Then check the whole image at its intended size. A setting that appears impressive when enlarged may create roughness or emphasize noise that is distracting in the final picture. If optional denoising makes the image look too smooth, compare against the untreated version instead of assuming that blur and noise must be corrected together.
Google Photos Photo Unblur
Google describes Photo Unblur in Google Photos as a way to improve out-of-focus blurry photos, including both new and old images. It may be a practical phone-oriented option when you want to try an unblur workflow without starting with manual Detail controls. Google’s feature page is Edit Photos with AI: Magic Eraser & Unblur.
The cited Google product page does not spell out all eligibility details for every device, account, or region. Check whether the feature is available in your own Google Photos setup before planning a workflow around it. Google has also described editing prompts as experimental AI in its post on Google Photos editing prompts; experimental generative editing should not be treated as a guaranteed or authoritative restoration.
Google’s description makes Photo Unblur an option to try, not a promise that every out-of-focus picture can be repaired. Availability is also a separate question from usefulness: confirm that the feature appears for your setup before investing time in a particular editing path. As with desktop sharpening, keep a copy of the original and compare the edited picture at its intended display size.
Expand the composition when a crop would remove important detail
Expanding a canvas preserves the existing image area while creating space outside it. The newly filled space is generated or synthesized, not recovered from a hidden original. It can be useful for a tighter-than-ideal composition—for example, when you need extra room around a subject—but treat the result as an edit whose invented content needs inspection.

Expansion is different from changing the composition by removing content. It keeps the original frame area and asks the tool to fill the new transparent border. This can avoid sacrificing a detail that is already in the image, but it also adds visual material that was not photographed. Use only as much new space as the image needs; enlarging several sides unnecessarily creates more generated area to review.
Lightroom expansion workflow
- Preserve the original. Work on a duplicate or keep the original file untouched so you can compare or start again.
- Open the crop and geometry controls. In Lightroom, open Crop, Rotate, Geometry.
- Enable Expand. Select the Expand option before dragging an edge outward.
- Extend one edge. Add only the amount of room the composition needs, then let the fill complete.
- Inspect before adding another edge. Check the transition where the generated area meets the photo, along with subject outlines and any geometry or patterns nearby.
- Repeat only if needed. If you need more canvas on another side, add it as a separate edge expansion and assess that result too.
- Save an edited copy. Compare it with the untouched original at the size where you plan to view or print it.
Generated content can look plausible without representing what was actually beyond the frame. If the photo is intended to document a real event, object, or place, keep the original available and disclose or clearly label the expansion where accuracy matters. Do not use a convincing fill as evidence of what the camera did not capture.
Compare fill methods and inspect for artifacts
Adobe documents two fill approaches relevant to expansion: Firefly Fill & Expand and Content-Aware Fill. Firefly Fill & Expand analyzes lighting and perspective to fill added transparent areas; Content-Aware Fill uses surrounding content. Both create or synthesize pixels in the new area, so neither should be treated as a factual recovery of the scene outside the frame. The choice is practical: compare which result fits the existing image better, then inspect it rather than trusting a seamless-looking preview.
- Seams: look closely at the boundary between original and generated pixels. A tonal or texture shift can make an edit visible even when the broad composition looks natural.
- Repeated patterns: repeated windows, leaves, bricks, or other motifs can expose a fill that copied or invented an awkward pattern.
- Perspective and geometry: check straight lines, edges, and the apparent scale of nearby objects. A fill that conflicts with the photo’s perspective may look wrong at normal size.
- Subject edges: inspect hair, clothing, limbs, and object outlines where the added area meets the original. These are sensitive places for visual discontinuities.
- Meaning: consider whether the added content changes what the picture appears to show, not only whether it looks attractive.
Adobe also documents Photoshop Enhance Detail for sharpening eligible Generative Fill variations. Its stated eligibility threshold is a variation larger than 1024 pixels; that is a feature limit, not a promise that every eligible result will improve. See Generate sharper variations with Enhance Detail. The output remains based on generated content, so inspect it for the same kinds of artifacts as any other fill.
Do not choose between fill methods on the basis of a single attractive preview alone. A broad area may blend convincingly while a repeated detail, straight edge, or boundary close to the subject gives away the edit. Consider what the image is for: a casual social image may tolerate a plausible extension, while a record of a real place or event calls for particular care in distinguishing captured pixels from additions.
Choose the repair method by the problem
| Need | Documented option | Useful distinction | Limit or caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improve apparent sharpness | Lightroom AI Sharpen or manual Detail controls | AI strength choices include Default and Strong; manual controls include Radius, Detail, and Masking. | Results depend on source quality. Enhancement does not guarantee recovery of lost information. |
| Try unblur on a phone workflow | Google Photos Photo Unblur | Google describes it for out-of-focus blurry photos, both new and old. | The cited feature page does not specify all eligibility for devices, accounts, or regions. |
| Add space around a tightly framed subject | Lightroom Generative Expand | Extends the canvas and fills transparent borders; documented methods include Firefly and Content-Aware approaches. | Newly filled pixels are generated or synthesized. Inspect them, especially near seams and geometry. |
| Sharpen a Generative Fill variation | Photoshop Enhance Detail | Can sharpen eligible Generative Fill variations. | Adobe states that variations must be larger than 1024 pixels to be eligible. |
| Increase image resolution | Lightroom Generative Upscale | Adobe lists 2x and 4x options. | Credit use depends on output size; model-specific limits apply. |
Lightroom Generative Upscale is a separate resolution option, not a substitute for fixing framing or a guarantee that a blurry source will become faithful high-detail imagery. Adobe’s documentation lists 2x and 4x upscale factors. For the named Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Sharpen operations, the same documentation lists 10 credits for files up to 25 megapixels and 20 credits for files from 25 to 56 megapixels. Those figures apply to the named operations and file-size tiers in Adobe’s documentation; confirm the current in-app terms before using them because credits and feature limits can change. Think of upscaling as a resolution-related option, not a shortcut for either of the two main problems. A larger output does not add breathing room around a tight frame, and a bigger file does not prove that new fine detail is faithful to the source. If you are considering it, weigh the intended output size against the documented factors, model limits, and credit use. The stated 10- and 20-credit tiers are for the named Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Sharpen operations, not a general price for every Lightroom edit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA careful end-to-end workflow
- Make a working copy. Keep the original file intact, especially if the picture matters for a record, publication, or later editing.
- Identify the primary defect. Decide whether blur, tight framing, or both are making the photo unusable. Do not expect one operation to solve the other problem.
- Try a modest sharpness correction if needed. Compare Lightroom AI Sharpen’s Default and Strong options, or work with the manual controls. If the photo is noisy, compare the optional denoising treatment too.
- Judge at realistic sizes. Look at the result both close up and at the size it will be viewed or printed. If the image only looks acceptable when enlarged far beyond its intended use, reconsider how much correction is worthwhile.
- Expand instead of sacrificing existing details. If a tighter crop would cut off something important, extend the canvas. In Lightroom, use Crop, Rotate, Geometry, enable Expand, and drag one edge outward at a time.
- Compare fill results. Where the workflow provides a choice, assess Firefly Fill & Expand against Content-Aware Fill for the particular photo. Inspect seams, patterns, perspective, and subject edges.
- Save a separate edit and review it beside the original. A side-by-side comparison helps reveal whether the edit improved the intended problem or merely made the image look different.
There is no universal strength or amount of expansion that suits every photo, and the documented tools do not guarantee a restoration result. The useful stopping point is the least aggressive edit that works at the final viewing size without introducing distracting artifacts or changing details you need to remain trustworthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before exporting
- Did the intended problem improve? Sharpen only to address apparent softness; expand only to add room the frame lacks.
- Is important original content still intact? Confirm that the edit did not crop, obscure, or alter the details you meant to preserve.
- Does the repair hold up at its intended use size? Inspect at the planned screen or print size, not only in a close-up preview.
- Are generated areas acceptable for the purpose? If accuracy or provenance matters, distinguish generated additions from captured content.
- Have you kept the original and saved a separate copy? Retaining both makes the edit reversible and the comparison meaningful.
Before relying on a feature, check both its availability and its current terms. Adobe’s Lightroom Generative AI help page was last updated June 18, 2026, and its Generative Expand page was last updated August 13, 2026; the Google Photos feature page does not set out every eligibility condition for all users. Software features, rollout, limits, and credits may change, so treat documented figures as a point-in-time guide and verify current in-app details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can sharpening restore a photo that is badly out of focus?
Sharpening can improve the apparent definition of existing edges, but it cannot guarantee recovery of detail that the camera did not capture clearly. Try a modest adjustment or a supported Unblur feature, then inspect for noise, halos, and unnatural texture at the intended viewing size. Keep the unedited original, especially if exact detail matters.
Should I crop or expand a tightly framed photo?
If cropping would remove a person, object, or other important detail already in the frame, consider canvas expansion instead. Expansion preserves the existing frame area and fills new space with generated or synthesized pixels. Inspect the result carefully; those additions are not evidence of what was outside the original frame.
How do I expand a photo in Lightroom without adding too much?
Open Crop, Rotate, Geometry, enable Expand, and drag an edge outward. Adobe recommends expanding one edge at a time. Add only the room needed, inspect the fill and its join with the original, and then decide whether another edge needs expansion.

What is the difference between Firefly Fill & Expand and Content-Aware Fill?
Adobe describes Firefly Fill & Expand as analyzing lighting and perspective to fill added transparent areas; Content-Aware Fill uses surrounding content. Compare the results for your image and inspect seams, patterns, perspective, and subject edges. Both synthesize new pixels rather than recover a hidden view beyond the frame.
How many credits does Lightroom Generative Upscale use?
Adobe lists 2x and 4x Generative Upscale options. Its documentation lists 10 credits for the named Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Sharpen operations on files up to 25 megapixels, and 20 credits for files from 25 to 56 megapixels. These are operation- and size-specific figures; confirm current in-app terms because costs and limits can change.
Is Google Photos Photo Unblur available on every phone?
Google describes Photo Unblur for out-of-focus blurry photos, including new and old images, but the cited feature page does not specify all eligibility for devices, accounts, or regions. Check your own Google Photos setup to see whether it is available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I trust an AI-expanded photo as a record of what was there?
No. A plausible-looking expansion still contains generated content beyond the original frame. Keep the original and clearly distinguish additions wherever accuracy or provenance matters; do not use generated fill as evidence of what the camera did not capture.
The Bottom Line
Separate blur from framing before editing. Use restrained sharpening or an available Unblur feature for apparent softness, and expand the canvas when a crop would discard details you need to keep. Preserve the original, inspect changes at their intended viewing size, and treat all newly filled pixels as generated rather than recovered scene detail.
