Fixing a blurry custom image in RPG Maker starts with identifying where the softness is introduced. Open the original file at 100% size and compare it with an in-game screenshot. If the source is already soft, export a sharper image at the size the game actually displays. If the source is crisp but the game is blurry, check scaling, bitmap filtering, project resolution, plugins, parallax layers, and the engine version.

For RPG Maker MZ pixel art, the first rendering test is nearest-neighbor scaling: MZ’s Bitmap API exposes a smooth property that selects linear filtering when enabled and nearest-neighbor filtering when disabled. That is appropriate for hard pixel edges, but not automatically correct for painted or antialiased artwork. The workflow below separates image-editing problems from runtime-rendering problems so you can change only what is necessary.

Diagnose the blur before changing the image

Do not begin by enlarging or sharpening the file. First determine whether the defect exists in the source or appears only after RPG Maker renders it. This distinction prevents permanent quality loss from editing a good image to compensate for a project setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare at native size

  1. Open the exported PNG or other source file in an image editor at 100% zoom, with no “fit to window” interpolation.
  2. Capture the image in RPG Maker at the project’s actual display size. Use the same zoom level when comparing edges.
  3. Inspect a diagonal line, a one-pixel outline, small text, and transparent edges. These reveal filtering more clearly than large flat areas.

If the file is soft at native size, the problem is in the artwork or export. If it is crisp at native size but soft in the game, investigate runtime scaling and filtering. A source that is crisp in an editor but blurry in a screenshot can also be affected by the screenshot tool or display scaling, so verify the game window itself before editing assets.

Use the scope of the problem as evidence

What you observe Most likely branch First check
Only one custom image is blurry everywhere it is used Source dimensions, export, or that asset’s scale Open the original at 100% and check the event, picture, or layer scale
The image is crisp in the editor but soft in-game Runtime filtering or non-native scaling Check display dimensions, scale factors, bitmap smoothing, and plugins
Many custom images become soft after a screen-size change Project-resolution or viewport scaling Compare the project resolution with the image’s intended display size
Built-in tiles, faces, or text are also blurry Engine version, core scripts, or a known asset issue Test the same asset in a clean project and check the installed MZ version
Only parallax or overlay images look different Layer-specific scaling or filtering Compare the parallax, picture, and map layers at identical zoom and scale

This diagnosis also tells you how aggressive the fix should be. A single affected file normally needs re-exporting or a per-asset setting. Widespread blur deserves a project-level investigation before any image is replaced.

Set the intended display dimensions first

Every image has two relevant sizes: its pixel dimensions on disk and the dimensions at which RPG Maker displays it. Decide the intended in-game size before resizing. For example, if a character is designed to occupy 48 by 48 pixels in the game, prepare the final artwork for that use rather than repeatedly enlarging a smaller draft.

Why repeated resizing creates softness

Resampling calculates new pixels from neighboring pixels. Once a sharp edge has been blended during an enlargement or reduction, later edits cannot reliably reconstruct the original boundary. Export from the original artwork whenever possible. Keep a master file and create the game PNG as a final output, instead of resizing an already resized PNG several times.

Integer scaling for pixel art

When enlarging pixel art, test whole-number multiples such as 2×, 3×, or 4× and use nearest-neighbor resampling. Integer multiples keep each source pixel represented by an equal block of destination pixels. A non-integer factor, such as 1.5×, forces some source pixels to cover different numbers of destination pixels and can produce uneven-looking edges even with nearest-neighbor filtering.

Integer scaling is a useful test, not a requirement for every RPG Maker asset. If the image must fit a non-integer destination, inspect the result in the actual game and decide whether a small amount of smoothing is preferable to uneven hard edges.

Downscaling detailed artwork

Reducing a large illustration can remove thin lines and soften transparency boundaries. Check the final-size image rather than judging only the large original. Inspect eyes, one-pixel highlights, diagonal outlines, and semi-transparent shadows after export. If the reduced result is too soft, simplify or strengthen details in the original instead of applying unlimited sharpening to the final PNG.

Prepare a sharp pixel-art source

Work from the original artwork

Return to the highest-quality source available, preferably the layered drawing or unscaled sprite sheet. Export once at the target dimensions. If the only available file is a small, already-blurred image, no RPG Maker setting can restore details that are absent; redraw or recreate the important edges at the intended resolution.

Use nearest-neighbor during pixel-art enlargement

In your image editor, choose nearest-neighbor (sometimes called “point”) interpolation when enlarging hard-edged sprites, tiles, or icons. Verify that the editor does not apply a second smoothing pass during export. Open the resulting PNG at 100% and look for blended colors along what should be one-pixel boundaries.

Check palette and color indexing

RPG Maker Web’s custom-tile tutorial demonstrates using GIMP to scale an image and index its colors so it better matches a pixelated game aesthetic. Color indexing and scaling are preparation techniques, not a universal specification: a deliberately limited palette may suit a retro tile, while a painted portrait may need continuous tones and antialiasing. If you index colors, inspect gradients, skin tones, and semi-transparent shadows for banding before importing.

Prevent transparent-edge halos

Resampling can mix transparent pixels with neighboring colors. Against a dark map, that mixture may appear as a light halo; against a light map, it may appear dark. Zoom in on the outside edge of the sprite and test it over the backgrounds used in the game. Crop or repaint contaminated edge pixels in the original rather than relying on a global sharpen filter.

Choose the correct MZ bitmap filtering mode

RPG Maker MZ’s Bitmap API documents a smooth property, described as “Whether the smooth scaling is applied.” Its implementation chooses linear scaling when the property is enabled and nearest-neighbor scaling when it is disabled. The documentation was accessed on October 13, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to test nearest-neighbor

Disable smoothing, where the relevant asset and render path permit it, when a pixel-art image has crisp source pixels but becomes soft during scaling. Nearest-neighbor preserves hard boundaries by selecting a nearby source pixel instead of blending adjacent pixels. Preview the result at the project’s normal display size and at a magnified view; a setting that looks sharp when enlarged can still look uneven at the actual game size.

When smoothing may be intentional

Linear filtering can be appropriate for painted portraits, antialiased illustrations, gradients, and artwork designed to move or scale smoothly. Do not apply a blanket nearest-neighbor rule to every image in a project. A mixed project may legitimately use crisp tile art and smoothly filtered portraits, provided each render path is configured deliberately.

Account for the render path

The property applies to MZ’s bitmap behavior; a plugin, custom sprite class, canvas layer, or other rendering path may override it. Test the exact way the image is used: a map tile, character, picture, parallax, and overlay can travel through different code paths. If changing the bitmap setting has no visible effect, disable suspect plugins one at a time in a backup copy and retest rather than assuming the property is broken.

Check project resolution and scaling

An image can be perfectly prepared yet look soft when the game scales the entire viewport. Compare the project’s configured width and height with the window or screen size used for testing. A project rendered at one resolution and enlarged to another may interpolate every layer, including a custom image that is otherwise native-size.

Test at the project’s actual display size

  1. Record the project width and height and the dimensions of the test window.
  2. Run the game at a 1:1 size if possible, without operating-system display scaling or a browser-style zoom.
  3. Capture the same asset at the native project size and at the larger window size.
  4. If only the enlarged view is blurry, the viewport scale—not the source PNG—is the likely cause.

For pixel art, choose a display scale that preserves whole-pixel relationships when your target hardware allows it. If the game must support arbitrary window sizes, accept that some non-integer scales will soften or unevenly distribute pixels, or use a project and presentation strategy that keeps the game view at an integer scale inside the window.

Do not overgeneralize MZ’s pixel-perfect map saving

The RPG Maker MZ product information states that its built-in map save function saves pixel perfect rather than resizing. That statement concerns map saving. It is not a universal guarantee that every imported picture, character, parallax, screenshot, or plugin-rendered image will remain unscaled. Diagnose each asset’s display path separately.

Separate one-asset problems from project-wide defects

Scope Useful comparison Likely action
One custom sprite or picture Original file versus the same asset in a clean event or scene Correct source dimensions, event scale, opacity, and filtering for that asset
Several custom assets but built-in graphics are sharp Assets made with the same editor or export preset Review the shared resampling, palette, alpha, and export process
Custom and built-in graphics are all soft Current project versus a new project at the same window size Investigate project resolution, plugins, core scripts, and display scaling
Only a particular map or layer is soft Same image as a picture, parallax, and other supported asset type Check layer-specific scale and parallax or overlay settings

A clean-project comparison is especially valuable because it changes one variable at a time. Import a copy of the same PNG into a blank MZ project, display it at its intended size, and compare screenshots. If it is sharp there, the original project’s settings or plugins deserve attention. Back up the project before changing core files or replacing resources.

Use the MZ 1.1.1 release notes carefully

RPG Maker MZ version 1.1.1, released December 15, 2020, lists a fix for blurry tiles in Outside_A1 and World_A2. The same update notes list a fix for text or faces becoming blurred when the screen size was larger than the default. These entries establish historical defects in that release line; they do not prove that every current blur is caused by one of them.

Verify before copying files

  1. Check the editor and project version currently installed.
  2. Identify whether the affected resources are the named built-in tiles, text, or faces, or whether they are unrelated custom files.
  3. Compare the affected asset with a clean project using the same engine version.
  4. Back up the project, plugins, and save files before updating the editor, core scripts, or resource files.
  5. Retest at the original and larger screen sizes after any update.

Do not overwrite a project’s core scripts or default resources solely because one custom image is blurry. The release-note fixes are useful evidence when the symptom and asset scope match, not a general-purpose image-sharpening procedure.

Check parallax, overlay, and layer consistency

Parallax maps and overlay systems can make identical artwork look different because each layer may be scaled, filtered, or positioned independently. RPG Maker Web’s “Parallax Mapping in MZ: Basics and Tips,” dated June 10, 2026, discusses how pixelated and softer edges behave when images are used across parallax and overlay layers.

Compare the same image across layers

  1. Display the image as a normal picture or event graphic at its intended dimensions.
  2. Display a copy as a parallax or overlay without changing the file.
  3. Compare edge sharpness, fractional positioning, and scale in the same scene.
  4. If only one layer is soft, inspect that layer’s plugin settings and transformation rules.

Fractional coordinates and non-integer zoom can also make a one-pixel edge appear to shimmer or blur while the asset remains correct. Keep pixel-art layers aligned to whole-pixel positions when the layer system permits it, and test movement as well as a static frame.

A complete repair workflow

Use this sequence from least destructive to most invasive. Stop when the image is sharp at the size and style you need.

  1. Record the environment. Write down the engine (for example, RPG Maker MZ), exact version, project resolution, test-window size, asset type, source dimensions, intended display dimensions, and any plugin or screen-size change.
  2. Inspect the source. Open the original at 100% and check whether the softness, halos, or color blending are already present.
  3. Make a clean export. Return to the original artwork, set the intended dimensions, choose nearest-neighbor for pixel-art enlargement or an appropriate high-quality reduction for detailed art, and export once.
  4. Import without transformations. Display the new file at 100% scale in the simplest supported asset path. Do not combine the test with a zoom, rotation, opacity effect, or plugin.
  5. Test filtering in MZ. For pixel art, test the bitmap path with smoothing disabled where the path exposes the MZ smooth property. For smooth artwork, compare the enabled state instead.
  6. Test resolution. Run at the project’s native display size, then at the larger or external size where the blur occurs. Record whether the defect appears only after viewport scaling.
  7. Isolate plugins and layers. Use a backup copy, disable suspect image, camera, resolution, and parallax plugins one at a time, and test the same scene after each change.
  8. Compare with a clean project. Reproduce the asset in a new project using the same engine version. This distinguishes project configuration from the file itself.
  9. Check historical fixes. If built-in tiles, faces, or text are affected, compare the symptom with the MZ 1.1.1 release notes and update only after backing up.
  10. Document the result. Keep the working export, filtering choice, project resolution, and plugin state together so a later edit does not reintroduce the problem.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

“The PNG is blurry before import”

Re-export from the original artwork. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution file with a smooth algorithm when the target is pixel art. If no original exists, redraw critical edges at the target dimensions; filtering cannot recreate missing detail.

“It is sharp in the editor but soft in a picture event”

Check the picture’s displayed width and height, project resolution, and any plugin that scales pictures. Test the MZ bitmap smoothing choice on that render path. A picture enlarged to a non-integer size is a more likely cause than the PNG itself.

“Tiles are soft but my custom sprite is fine”

Check whether the affected tiles are Outside_A1 or World_A2, whether the project predates the MZ 1.1.1 fixes, and whether a plugin replaces the tileset or map renderer. Compare the same map in a clean project before replacing resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Text and faces blur only in a large window”

Test at the default project size and at the enlarged size. The MZ 1.1.1 notes identify a historical defect for text or faces at screen sizes larger than default. Verify the project version and check for resolution or UI-scaling plugins before changing face images.

“The image has a bright or dark outline”

Inspect transparent pixels and the export background. Resampling may have blended edge colors into transparency. Re-export from the original with clean edge pixels and test the sprite over every major background color.

“Parallax art is softer than the same file elsewhere”

Compare layer scale, filtering, fractional coordinates, and overlay settings. Keep the parallax and overlay transformations consistent with the normal picture or event test, and avoid judging a moving layer from a single interpolated frame.

What not to do

  • Do not repeatedly resize an already resized export.
  • Do not enlarge a low-resolution source and expect a rendering setting to restore detail.
  • Do not force nearest-neighbor on painted or antialiased art without checking for jagged edges and broken gradients.
  • Do not treat a screenshot viewed at an arbitrary zoom as proof that the game is filtering incorrectly.
  • Do not copy core scripts or default resources into a project without a backup and a clean-project comparison.
  • Do not assume a setting documented for MZ behaves identically in MV, VX Ace, or a plugin’s custom renderer.
  • Do not use the MZ map-save “pixel perfect” statement as evidence that every custom image is displayed without scaling.

What to include when asking for help

Provide enough information for someone else to reproduce the render path. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Engine and exact version.
  • Asset type: tileset, character sheet, picture, face, parallax, overlay, or another category.
  • Source pixel dimensions and intended in-game dimensions.
  • Project resolution and the window or monitor size used for testing.
  • Whether the source is pixel art, painted, or antialiased.
  • Whether the blur appears in the source file, only in-game, or only after enlarging the window.
  • Relevant plugins, resolution changes, zoom effects, and parallax systems.
  • A native-size source view and an in-game screenshot showing the same edge.

This information identifies whether the next step is image preparation, MZ filtering, project scaling, a layer-specific setting, or a version check. It also prevents advice for one engine or plugin from being applied to a different render path.

Frequently asked questions

Can sharpening filters fix a pixelated custom image?

They can increase edge contrast, but they cannot recover detail lost through a low-resolution source or previous smoothing pass. Recreate the image at the intended dimensions whenever possible, then use sharpening only as a controlled final adjustment for artwork that benefits from it.

Should every RPG Maker game use nearest-neighbor scaling?

No. Nearest-neighbor is the mode to test for hard-edged pixel art. Linear smoothing can be the correct choice for painted, antialiased, or deliberately soft artwork. The decision belongs to the asset’s design and the render path, not to the engine name alone.

Why does the same PNG look different in two parts of a project?

Different asset types and plugins may apply different scale, filtering, coordinates, or viewport transformations. Compare the file with no transformation, then compare each layer or event path independently. A difference in rendering path does not necessarily indicate a damaged PNG.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a current MZ project automatically protected from the old blurry-tile and large-screen text issues?

Not necessarily. The MZ 1.1.1 notes document fixes for particular tiles and for text or faces at larger-than-default screen sizes, but your project’s installed version, resources, and plugins determine what is actually running. Verify the version and reproduce the symptom in a clean project.
