If DLSS 5 is making a game look soft, smeared, ghosted, or otherwise wrong, first disable the optional DLSS Neural Rendering setting and compare the same scene. If the problem remains, test DLSS Super Resolution separately, then compare the game’s alternate upscaler or anti-aliasing mode. These are different technologies, so changing the wrong one can leave the visual problem untouched.
Start with the setting most likely to be responsible
NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. In a supported game, the option normally appears as DLSS Neural Rendering, not simply “DLSS 5.” It adds neural-generated lighting and material effects to the rendered image. NVIDIA also states that the feature is optional and can be turned off.
That matters because DLSS 5 is not the same control as DLSS Super Resolution. Neural Rendering changes lighting and materials; Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution frame from a lower-resolution input. A blurry image can therefore remain after you disable Neural Rendering if Super Resolution, another upscaler, temporal anti-aliasing, or the game’s implementation is responsible.

Quick checks before changing anything
Confirm what the game is actually calling each feature. A menu may list Neural Rendering, Super Resolution, an upscaling quality preset, and anti-aliasing as separate entries. A generic “DLSS” label does not prove that the switch controls Neural Rendering. If you cannot find the exact wording, check the game’s current graphics help text or support page rather than changing unrelated options at random.

Record your baseline first. Note the display resolution, in-game output resolution, Super Resolution mode, Neural Rendering state, anti-aliasing choice, driver version, and game version. Take a screenshot of a static problem and, if the symptom appears during movement, record a short clip. This gives you a useful comparison even if a restart or later update changes the image.
NBA 2K27: the published menu path
In NBA 2K27, NVIDIA’s published instructions are:
- Install the current GeForce Game Ready Driver required by the game.
- Launch NBA 2K27.
- Open Video Settings.
- Find DLSS Neural Rendering.
- Turn it off, keep your other graphics choices unchanged, and reload the same scene for comparison.
The wording and location can differ in other games. Look under Video or Graphics for “DLSS Neural Rendering.” If the option is absent, do not assume that another DLSS switch controls the same effect.
Use a controlled comparison instead of changing everything at once
To identify the cause, change one option at a time. Use the same camera position, display resolution, scene, lighting conditions, and motion state for every comparison. A static close-up can reveal texture softness, while a moving camera or character can reveal ghosting and temporal instability.
- Record the current settings or take a screenshot of the graphics menu.
- Choose a repeatable scene with fine detail, text, hair, fencing, player uniforms, foliage, or other high-frequency textures.
- Toggle only DLSS Neural Rendering and revisit that scene.
- If the appearance is unchanged, restore the setting and test the Super Resolution mode instead.
- Only after those tests compare the game’s other upscaler or anti-aliasing option.
This method prevents a resolution, sharpening, anti-aliasing, or performance change from being incorrectly attributed to DLSS 5. Keep the camera and display scaling fixed as well. Looking at one run in a bright static area and another in a dark moving area can make a normal lighting difference look like a setting change.
For temporal artifacts, make two comparisons: hold the camera still for several seconds, then repeat the same route or slow pan. A still image is useful for a soft texture, but it cannot demonstrate trails, shimmer, or frame-to-frame instability. A short video with the settings visible in a second clip is more informative for a developer.
Know which DLSS feature you are testing

Do not treat a sharper alternate mode as proof that DLSS 5 is defective. NVIDIA notes that image quality varies with the game engine, content, training, and resolution, and that individual preference between TAA and DLSS can differ from one game to another.

A quality mode is still driven by the game’s input resolution, motion data, exposure handling, sharpening choices, and integration. Compare the actual output in the title you are playing instead of assuming that a mode with the same name will look the same everywhere.
Step-by-step troubleshooting sequence
1. Confirm that the feature is supported and enabled
Check the game’s current graphics menu rather than relying on a video or guide made for a different build. NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ lists DLSS 5 support for RTX 50 Series desktop GPUs and laptops, plus GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs. The same FAQ identifies NBA 2K27 as the game in which DLSS 5 became available. Support can change as games and drivers are updated.

If you are using cloud streaming, identify the service tier and the rig class it provides. If you are playing locally, confirm that the installed GPU is in the supported class. A missing setting may indicate unsupported hardware, an unsupported game build, or a driver that predates the feature. Do not infer support merely from seeing another DLSS option in the menu; Super Resolution support and Neural Rendering support are separate questions.
2. Install the required game-ready driver
For NBA 2K27, NVIDIA says to download and install its new GeForce Game Ready Driver before enabling DLSS 5. Restart the game after the driver installation. If the menu still does not show DLSS Neural Rendering, verify that the game itself is updated and that your hardware or streaming plan meets the current support list.
A driver update is a compatibility step, not a guarantee of a sharper picture. If the visual defect began immediately after an update, record the old and new driver versions in your report and test the game again after a clean restart. Avoid presenting a driver change as a confirmed cure unless the same scene clearly improves and the result is repeatable.
3. Disable Neural Rendering and compare
Turn off only DLSS Neural Rendering. Examine the identical scene at the same resolution. Look for changes in material appearance, lighting transitions, reflections, and the overall character of the image. If the unwanted effect disappears, leave the feature disabled until a later game or driver update addresses the behavior.
If nothing changes, that is useful evidence rather than a failed test. It means the remaining blur or distortion is more likely to involve Super Resolution, another anti-aliasing path, a different graphics option, or the game’s rendering integration.
4. Test Super Resolution independently
If the image is still blurry with Neural Rendering disabled, inspect the separate DLSS Super Resolution control and its quality mode. Because Super Resolution reconstructs output from a lower-resolution input, its result depends on the selected mode, output resolution, motion information, and the game’s implementation.
Use the same scene for each available mode. A mode that looks acceptable in a static view may produce ghosting or smearing while the camera moves, so test both a paused view and a short moving sequence. Do not describe a mode as universally best; NVIDIA’s own guidance emphasizes game- and resolution-dependent results.
When comparing modes, keep the output resolution fixed. If the game changes internal resolution with a performance preset, note that explicitly; otherwise you may be comparing two different input images rather than two reconstruction algorithms. Also check whether a preset silently changes anti-aliasing or sharpening, and record those changes instead of attributing every difference to Super Resolution alone.
5. Compare the game’s alternate path
Where the menu provides another upscaler or anti-aliasing method, compare it without changing resolution or unrelated effects. TAA may look preferable in one title, while DLSS may look preferable in another. The comparison is useful for diagnosis: if the alternate path removes the artifact, the issue is likely tied to the selected reconstruction or anti-aliasing implementation rather than to the monitor or a general GPU failure.

Use the alternate path as a practical workaround only after checking that it does not introduce a different problem, such as excessive edge shimmer or an unacceptable performance change. The goal is to identify which path behaves differently in the same scene, not to declare a universal winner.

Some graphics changes do not fully apply until the game restarts. Close and relaunch after changing the feature. Check the game’s patch notes or support page and install available updates. Also check for a newer driver, because DLSS 5 support and game integration are time-sensitive.
After restarting, repeat the exact comparison rather than relying on memory. If the symptom changes after a patch, retain the earlier screenshot or clip so the developer can see what was fixed or introduced.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
The entire image looks soft
First test Neural Rendering, then Super Resolution. Confirm the output resolution has not changed and compare the available Super Resolution modes. If an alternate upscaler or anti-aliasing option produces a clearer image in the same scene, use that mode while reporting the difference to the developer.
Check small text, distant geometry, and repeated patterns as well as a character close-up. Global softness that affects every surface points toward reconstruction or output-resolution settings; one soft asset points more toward that asset or its texture handling.

Capture a moving scene rather than only a screenshot. Temporal reconstruction depends on motion data and previous frames, so a problem that appears only during movement is diagnostically different from static softness. Test Super Resolution modes individually and note whether the artifact follows one mode. NVIDIA’s developer guidance identifies inaccurate motion vectors and jitter as integration concerns; they are not settings an ordinary player should repair by editing game files.
Describe the direction and location of the trail when reporting it. For example, note whether it follows a player, appears behind a fast camera pan, or is limited to transparent effects. That detail helps distinguish a temporal reconstruction issue from ordinary motion blur, which may be a separate game setting.
Fine textures look low-resolution or muddy
Check a close-up of fabric, grass, hair, signage, or surface detail. If a localized texture remains blurry while geometry and lighting look normal, record its location and whether the problem appears at all camera distances. NVIDIA’s developer checklist notes that missing mip-map bias can leave textures blurry, smudgy, or low-resolution. That is an integration issue for the game developer, not a universal player-side sharpness fix.
Do not assume that increasing an unverified sharpening control will correct missing texture detail. If the game exposes such a control, test it only as a separate variable and report its effect, but there is no documented universal DLSS 5 sharpness slider that fixes every texture problem.

The image flickers, shimmers, or changes when the camera moves
Compare a stationary view with a slow pan and then a normal gameplay movement. Record whether the instability affects edges, reflections, transparencies, or a particular material. Test Neural Rendering and Super Resolution separately so the report identifies which path changes the symptom. Include a video if possible; a single still image cannot show temporal behavior.
Only lighting or materials look wrong
Toggle Neural Rendering first. Since that feature adds neural-rendered lighting and material effects, a change limited to those elements is more relevant to that option than to Super Resolution. If disabling it has no effect, continue with the Super Resolution and alternate anti-aliasing tests rather than assuming every visual error comes from DLSS 5.
What the player can and cannot fix
The official player-facing guidance establishes that Neural Rendering is optional and can be disabled. It does not establish one universal sharpness slider or one setting that corrects every form of blur, distortion, ghosting, or flicker. Game menus differ, and a control should be recommended only when that specific game exposes it.
Developer integration problems can produce symptoms that no player menu can resolve. NVIDIA’s Streamline guidance calls out missing mip-map bias, inaccurate motion vectors, and incorrect jitter as possible sources of blurry or unstable output. These checks require changes in the game’s rendering integration. Do not modify game DLLs, rendering buffers, or experimental model files as a normal troubleshooting step. NVIDIA’s DLSS Research page warns that experimental models may be unvalidated or regress.
That boundary is important for support advice. A player can select or disable exposed features, verify a driver and supported platform, and supply reproducible evidence. A player generally cannot correct a missing mip-map bias or repair a game’s motion-vector buffer from the graphics menu. Treat instructions that require replacing DLLs or editing internal rendering data as developer-level debugging, not a routine fix.
How to report a persistent problem
If the artifact remains after the individual tests, send the game developer a compact, reproducible report. Include:
- Game title and exact game version or patch.
- Local GPU model and driver version, or the cloud service and tier used.
- Display resolution and, if relevant, the output resolution selected by the game.
- Whether DLSS Neural Rendering was on or off.
- DLSS Super Resolution mode and any alternate upscaler or anti-aliasing mode tested.
- A description using a precise symptom: global softness, ghosting, flicker, shimmering, distorted material, or localized texture blur.
- The scene, camera position, and whether the issue appears while moving.
- A screenshot for static problems or a short video for temporal artifacts.
State what changed when each feature was toggled. “Blur remains with Neural Rendering off but improves when Super Resolution is changed from one mode to another” is more useful than simply reporting that “DLSS looks bad.” Include the display and render resolutions separately if the game lists both, and mention whether a restart was performed.
Keep the report focused on one reproducible scene. If possible, provide the same camera angle with Neural Rendering on and off, followed by the Super Resolution modes you tested. This lets the developer compare the affected path without guessing which setting changed between captures.

When buying hardware will not solve the problem
There is no evidence that purchasing a new monitor, power supply, cooling component, or another GPU is a general fix for this specific visual problem. If the game’s rendering integration supplies incorrect motion vectors, jitter, or texture-mip settings, changing hardware does not correct those inputs. First isolate the feature, verify support and driver requirements, and report reproducible defects.

Hardware eligibility still matters for whether the menu appears. NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ lists RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops and GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs for DLSS 5 support. That requirement explains availability; it is not a promise that buying hardware will repair a defect in a supported game.
Practical decision checklist
- Neural Rendering switch changes the image: leave it off and report the affected scene if you want the developer to investigate.
- Neural Rendering switch changes nothing: test Super Resolution and its quality modes.
- Another upscaler looks better: use the clearer path for that game and document the comparison.
- The artifact appears only during motion: capture video and describe ghosting, flicker, or shimmer rather than calling it simple blur.
- A texture alone is muddy: include its location and distance in the report; it may be a developer-side texture or mip-map integration issue.
- The setting is missing: verify the game version, current driver, GPU or cloud tier, and current support list.
- The problem survives every player-side test: update the game and driver, then escalate with reproducible evidence.
Bottom line
Disable DLSS Neural Rendering first, because it is the optional DLSS 5 effect exposed in supported game menus. If blur or distortion remains, diagnose DLSS Super Resolution and other anti-aliasing or upscaling options independently. A persistent artifact may be a game-integration defect rather than a setting you can repair, so provide the developer with the exact configuration, scene, and visual evidence.
