If applications became blurry, tiny, or oversized after moving between GNOME, KDE Plasma, or another Linux desktop, first identify whether the session is Wayland or X11 and whether the affected program is native Wayland, native X11, or XWayland. Then reset scaling in the desktop’s Display settings, restart the applications, and remove conflicting toolkit overrides. Fractional scaling can intentionally blur X11 applications under XWayland; the durable fix is a native Wayland backend, an integer scale, or an X11 session for that workload.
Start with the shortest reliable fix
Do these checks before changing environment variables:
- Open a terminal and run
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. The result is normallywaylandorx11. - In the current desktop environment, open Settings → Display (the wording may be Displays) and set the affected monitor to 100% or 200% while troubleshooting.
- Log out and back in. At minimum, completely quit and relaunch every affected application; many programs read scaling only at startup.
- Test the same application with its native Wayland backend, if it has one. If that copy is sharp while the default or X11 copy is fuzzy, the problem is the X11/XWayland scaling path rather than the panel or monitor.
- Inspect your session files for old overrides such as
GDK_SCALE,QT_SCALE_FACTOR,QT_FONT_DPI,QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS,QT_USE_PHYSICAL_DPI, andXft.dpiin~/.Xresources. Remove only values you recognize, then start a fresh login session.
Use 100% or 200% first because integer factors are the easiest way to distinguish a configuration mismatch from a fractional-scaling limitation. Qt documentation says integer factors such as 1.0 and 2.0 are preferred for the best results, although quarter-step rounding can also work well.

Why changing desktops can change app size and sharpness
Scaling is not one Linux-wide switch. It is negotiated by several layers:

- Economical &Reusable: Built durable materials with a long-lasting battery, our CAGIWIRU air duster it's a sustainable alternative to disposable air cans.
- Display protocol: Wayland and X11 expose different scaling models.
- Compositor: the component that places windows and may resample a window buffer.
- Desktop environment: GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, and others store and expose scale settings differently.
- Toolkit: GTK and Qt obtain DPI and scale information through different settings and fallback mechanisms.
- Application: a program can render natively for Wayland, use X11 directly, or run as an X11 client through XWayland.
A desktop switch can therefore leave a valid setting from the old session in a place the new session still reads. It can also expose a different rendering path: an application that was native Wayland in one session may be running through XWayland in another. The visible result can be wrong physical size, blurry text, controls that are too small or too large, or different sizes between applications on the same monitor.
Wayland and X11: the scaling difference that matters
| Characteristic | Wayland session | X11 session |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor scaling | GNOME supports a separate scale per monitor. | GNOME uses one global scale factor. |
| Mixed-DPI monitors | A native Wayland application can use each monitor’s scale. | One global DPI/scale is a compromise for all monitors. |
| Native toolkit path | Applications that support Wayland can receive the compositor’s scale directly. | Applications use X settings, X resources, or toolkit-specific DPI handling. |
| Legacy X11 application under Wayland | XWayland may scale the application’s already-rendered buffer, which can blur fractional sizes. | The application renders directly in the X11 session, avoiding that particular compositor resampling step. |
| Changing a value | Usually requires restarting applications; some desktop changes also need a relogin. | Usually requires restarting applications and, for X resources, a new session or resource reload. |
For mixed-DPI setups, a native Wayland session is the better baseline when the applications you use support it. Under X11, expect one global setting rather than a perfect per-monitor result.
Step 1: identify the rendering path of the blurry application
Check the session type
Run:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
wayland means the desktop session is Wayland; x11 means it is an X11 session. This variable alone does not tell you how every application renders, because a Wayland desktop can host both native Wayland and X11/XWayland windows.

Compare native Wayland with the default launch
Many toolkits provide a documented platform-selection option or an application-specific command-line switch. Use the program’s own documentation to launch one copy through Wayland, then launch it normally. Do not assume that a Wayland desktop means every application is native Wayland.
If the native Wayland copy is crisp and the X11/XWayland copy is blurry only at a fractional scale, you have reproduced the expected limitation described by GNOME developer Emmanuele Bassi: “Yes, the blurriness for X11 applications running with fractional scaling is expected, and it cannot really be fixed without porting those applications away from X11.”

Use the symptom to narrow the cause
- Every application is the wrong size: check the desktop scale and stale global overrides.
- Only GTK applications are wrong: check
GDK_SCALEand GNOME XSettings. - Only Qt or older X11 applications are wrong: check Xft DPI, X resources, and Qt overrides.
- Only X11/XWayland applications are blurry at 125%, 150%, or another fractional value: use a native Wayland backend, an integer scale, or an X11 session.
- The same program changes size after moving between monitors: verify whether it is native Wayland and whether the desktop supports per-monitor scaling.
Step 2: reset the desktop-level scale
Use the active desktop’s Display settings
Open the current desktop environment’s display panel, select the monitor, and choose the intended scale. Start at 100% (1×) or 200% (2×). Apply the change, log out and back in, and relaunch the affected programs.
Make this change in the desktop’s native display settings rather than forcing a toolkit variable first. Qt’s guidance is explicit: “These adjustments should be done using the native display settings of the platform, so that all applications will agree on the same DPI or scale factor values.” A native setting lets the compositor and toolkits use one agreed value instead of making each application guess.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen fractional scaling is appropriate
After the integer test works, try the fractional value you actually want. Quarter-step factors can produce good results in supported native paths, but exact physical-DPI calculations may introduce fractional-scaling artifacts. If only X11/XWayland windows become soft when you enable the fractional value, that is a rendering-path limitation, not proof that the monitor or cable is defective.
Step 3: handle monitors with different pixel densities
Two monitors can have the same physical size but different pixel density, so a single global factor rarely makes both comfortable under X11. GNOME documents per-monitor scaling in its Wayland session and a single global factor in its X11 mode.
- Move a native Wayland application between the monitors and observe whether its size and sharpness adapt.
- Repeat with an X11/XWayland application. If it remains soft or changes size only after being restarted, it is not receiving the same per-monitor information.
- For a mixed-DPI workstation, select a Wayland session at the login screen when your essential applications support it.
- If a required application is X11-only, choose between an integer compositor scale, accepting a size compromise, or using an X11 session for that workload.
Step 4: correct GTK-only size problems
Test one GTK application
GNOME documents GDK_SCALE as a per-application Hi-DPI control. Test an integer factor without changing the rest of the desktop:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GDK_SCALE=1 application
This is a diagnostic and targeted workaround. If it fixes one program, compare its result with the desktop’s native scale before deciding whether to keep a launcher override.
Adjust GNOME’s XSettings override only when GNOME XSettings is active
For desktop-wide GTK behavior in a GNOME session that uses GNOME’s XSettings service, the documented override is:
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides "[{'Gdk/WindowScalingFactor', <2>}]"
Restart affected applications after applying it. Do not apply this command blindly in another desktop environment or in a session that does not run the corresponding GNOME settings service; it may have no effect and can make later diagnosis harder. If you used it during testing, record the previous value so you can remove the override when returning to the desktop’s normal scaling controls.
Recognize a GTK mismatch
A GTK program that is consistently twice the expected size usually has an effective scale of 2 layered on top of a desktop scale that is already 2. A program that is tiny may be seeing GDK_SCALE=1 while the desktop expects a larger factor. Compare the environment of the launcher that starts the application with the environment of a terminal launched inside the same session.

Step 5: correct Qt and older X11 applications
Understand Qt’s X11 DPI inputs
On X11, Qt reads logical DPI from X settings and X resources and falls back to 96 DPI when no usable value is available. Relevant entries include Xft/DPI and Xft.dpi. Older X11 toolkits, including Motif-based programs, may also rely on these values.
Qt recommends using the platform’s native display setting first. Its environment variables are useful for controlled testing or a specific application, but a global override can affect every Qt program in the session.
Set an Xft DPI value through X resources
For an X11 workload, GNOME developer Emmanuele Bassi recommends placing a calculated value such as this in $HOME/.Xresources:
Xft.dpi: 141
Do not copy 141 as a universal answer. It is an example; calculate the value that corresponds to your desired scale and monitor. After changing ~/.Xresources, load the resource database using the mechanism provided by your session, then restart applications. A full logout and login is the most reliable way to ensure every X11 client sees the new value.
Use Qt variables only for a bounded test
Qt documents these controls:
| Variable | Purpose | Safe use |
|---|---|---|
QT_SCALE_FACTOR |
Applies a scale factor to Qt output. | Use for testing or a narrowly scoped launcher; avoid leaving it globally enabled without checking side effects. |
QT_FONT_DPI |
Provides a font-DPI value to Qt. | Test with one application when text size is wrong but geometry is otherwise correct. |
QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS |
Supplies screen-specific scale factors. | Use only when you understand the screen names and the application’s Qt version. |
QT_USE_PHYSICAL_DPI |
Requests physical-DPI-based behavior. | Use cautiously; physical-DPI calculations can produce fractional values and inconsistent results across displays. |
For example, test a factor without changing the whole session:

QT_SCALE_FACTOR=2 application
If the test fixes the program, prefer an equivalent native desktop or Xft setting when possible. If it changes one application but makes another too large, remove the global variable and keep the workaround local to the affected launcher.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: fix the XWayland blur case
Fractional scaling is the case that most often causes “sharp on X11, blurry on Wayland” reports. A native Wayland application can render at the scale requested by the compositor. An X11 application running through XWayland may render a buffer at a scale it understands, after which the compositor resamples that buffer to the fractional monitor scale. Text and fine UI edges can lose sharpness.
Use this decision path:
- Native Wayland backend exists: enable it and use that launch path.
- No native backend, but 100% or 200% is acceptable: use an integer compositor scale; this often avoids the resampling softness.
- No native backend and fractional size is essential: accept the visual trade-off or run that workload in an X11 session.
- Only one application is affected: keep the workaround in that application’s launcher rather than changing the entire desktop.
Changing GDK_SCALE or QT_SCALE_FACTOR cannot make an X11 application become native Wayland. Those variables alter toolkit behavior; they do not port the application or remove the compositor’s resampling step.
Step 7: remove leftovers from the previous desktop
A desktop change does not necessarily erase shell startup files, X resources, or per-application launchers. Inspect these locations and values:
~/.profile,~/.bash_profile,~/.bashrc, and other session startup files for exported scaling variables.- Desktop entry files or custom launch scripts for inline assignments such as
GDK_SCALE=2. ~/.XresourcesforXft.dpior related Xft entries.- GNOME settings for an XSettings override containing
Gdk/WindowScalingFactor. - Any KDE, GNOME, or distribution-specific display profile that was copied between sessions.
Comment out or remove only values you recognize. Then log out completely and log back in; closing a terminal is not enough when the display manager or user session exports the variable at login. This cleanup is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every desktop switch leaves stale settings.
Symptom-to-fix troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Likely layer | Action |
|---|---|---|
| All applications are too large after switching desktops. | Desktop scale plus an old global override. | Set 100% or 200% in Display settings, remove recognized overrides, relogin, and relaunch applications. |
| All applications are too small, but the panel looks normal. | Toolkit or X11 DPI fallback. | Check GDK_SCALE, Xft DPI, and Qt variables; do not stack another scale before clearing the old one. |
| GTK applications alone are wrong. | GDK or GNOME XSettings. | Test GDK_SCALE=1 or GDK_SCALE=2 for one application, then inspect the GNOME XSettings override. |
| Qt and Motif applications alone are wrong. | Xft/X resources or Qt fallback. | Check Xft.dpi, the 96-DPI fallback, and Qt’s documented variables; restart the programs after each change. |
| Only XWayland windows are blurry at 125% or 150%. | Fractional compositor scaling of an X11 buffer. | Use native Wayland, an integer scale, or an X11 session; toolkit variables cannot remove the X11 limitation. |
| One monitor is comfortable and the other is not. | Global X11 scale or non-native application. | Use a Wayland session with native Wayland applications for per-monitor scaling, or accept an X11 compromise. |
| A change works in a terminal but not from the application menu. | Different launcher environment. | Inspect the desktop entry or launch script and apply the same variable only there, then restart the application. |
| Settings appear unchanged after editing a file. | Old process or session still holds the previous value. | Quit the application completely; if it persists, log out and start a new session. |
How to choose between Wayland and X11 after the repair
- Choose Wayland when you have mixed-DPI monitors and your important applications provide native Wayland support. It gives the compositor the information needed for per-monitor scaling.
- Choose X11 when a critical application is X11-only and fractional scaling under XWayland is unacceptable. You trade away per-monitor scaling in GNOME’s X11 mode for direct X11 rendering.
- Use either with integer factors when predictability and sharpness matter more than fine-grained physical sizing.
The correct choice is workload-specific. A desktop session is not “blurry” as a whole; individual windows can follow different protocol paths inside the same session.
Prevent the problem when changing desktops again
- Record the current session type with
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPEbefore logging out. - Note the desktop’s display scale and whether each frequently used application is native Wayland, X11, or XWayland.
- Remove temporary variables after testing instead of placing them permanently in a global profile.
- Keep a list of intentional per-application launch overrides, including why each exists.
- After the first login to the new desktop, test at 100% or 200% before enabling fractional scaling.
- On mixed-DPI hardware, test monitor-to-monitor movement with the applications you actually use, not just with the desktop panel.
- Restart applications after every scale change and perform a full relogin after changing X resources or session startup files.
What the documented limits mean in practice
There is no single DPI number that makes every toolkit and protocol agree. Qt’s 96-DPI value is an X11 fallback, not a recommendation for every monitor. The GDK_SCALE values 1 and 2 are GNOME configuration examples, not measurements of display quality or usage. Likewise, Xft.dpi: 141 is an example value that must be calculated for the desired scale. Treat these numbers as controls with specific scope, not as universal fixes.

If the remaining blur is limited to X11 applications at a fractional Wayland scale, the limitation is architectural; switching variables repeatedly will not produce native fractional rendering.
