If your Marshall Emberton III will not pair, start with the speaker’s pairing mode: turn it on, hold the Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly, then select EMBERTON III in your phone, tablet, or computer’s Bluetooth list. If the speaker was paired before, remove its saved entry and pair it again. For a speaker that connects but drops out, treat the problem differently: reduce distance, remove obstacles, and move away from likely radio interference. A factory reset is the last step because it deletes user settings and requires setup again.

The Emberton III can maintain connections with two audio devices and remembers up to eight paired devices. That convenience can make a working connection look broken when another connected device owns playback. The sections below separate discovery and pairing failures, silent or wrong-source playback, intermittent dropouts, and persistent or erratic behavior.

Identify which Bluetooth problem you have

Use the symptom that best matches what you see. Each symptom has a different least-disruptive fix.

Symptom What it usually means First action
EMBERTON III does not appear in the Bluetooth list The speaker is on but not in pairing mode, or Bluetooth is disabled on the source device. Turn on Bluetooth on the source and hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly.
The device appears, but pairing fails A stale saved pairing or an incomplete pairing attempt may be blocking a new connection. Remove the saved Emberton III entry, then enter pairing mode and select it again.
It says connected, but there is no sound Another connected device may be playing, or the source has not selected the speaker as its audio output. Pause playback on the other connected device and verify the active audio output.
Audio cuts out after a connection Distance, walls, doors, or nearby electronics may be weakening or disrupting the Bluetooth radio path. Move both devices closer, remove obstacles, and move the speaker away from possible interference.
Behavior remains erratic after basic checks The speaker may need a firmware check or a return to its original settings. Check the Marshall Bluetooth app for firmware instructions; reset only if the problem continues.

Marshall describes the pairing failure as “Can’t connect or pair with a bluetooth device.” That wording covers discovery and initial connection; a dropout after successful playback needs the separate radio-path checks described later.

Pair the Emberton III from scratch

Follow this sequence before changing advanced settings. It establishes the speaker’s state and prevents a source device from searching while the speaker is merely powered on.

  1. Turn on the speaker. Confirm that the Emberton III has powered up and is close enough to the phone, tablet, or computer for the initial setup.
  2. Enable Bluetooth on the source device. On a phone or tablet, open the device’s Bluetooth settings. On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices; on macOS, open System Settings > Bluetooth. Labels can differ by operating-system version, but the Bluetooth switch must be on.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the Emberton III Bluetooth button until its LED changes to a slow blue pulse. Marshall identifies that slow blue pulse as the pairing-mode cue in its troubleshooting guidance: pairing troubleshooting.
  4. Select the speaker. In the source device’s available Bluetooth devices, choose EMBERTON III. The manual says the source must have Bluetooth enabled and the user must select the speaker from the device list: Emberton III manual.
  5. Wait for the connection result. Keep the Bluetooth settings screen open until the source reports that the Emberton III is connected. Then play a short audio clip and confirm that the selected output is the speaker.

If the speaker never appears, repeat the button hold rather than repeatedly tapping the device name. The source can discover the Emberton III only while the speaker is advertising in pairing mode.

Remove a saved pairing when reconnecting fails

A source device can retain an old pairing record even though the speaker is ready to accept a new one. Removing that record is less disruptive than resetting the speaker and should be the next step when a device that worked before no longer reconnects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a phone, tablet, or computer

  1. Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
  2. Find the saved entry for EMBERTON III.
  3. Choose the operating system’s removal command, such as Forget, Remove device, or Unpair. The exact label varies.
  4. Return the Emberton III to pairing mode by holding its Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly.
  5. Scan again and select EMBERTON III.

When you later escalate to a factory reset, Marshall specifically instructs users to remove both EMBERTON III and EMBERTON III [LE] if both entries are present. Remove the entries before attempting that reset, not afterward: Marshall’s factory-reset instructions.

If the old entry keeps returning

Turn Bluetooth off and back on at the source after removing the saved entry, then search again while the speaker is visibly in pairing mode. Do not select a different similarly named device. The intended listing is EMBERTON III; the optional EMBERTON III [LE] entry may also be shown by some systems and is removed as part of Marshall’s reset procedure.

Check multipoint before assuming pairing has failed

The Emberton III can connect to two audio devices simultaneously and remembers up to eight previously paired devices. Marshall says it attempts to reconnect to the last connected device when that device is in range: Emberton III pairing guide.

That behavior can produce two confusing situations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A laptop is still connected in another room, so your phone appears connected but cannot take control.
  • Both devices are connected, but one is already playing. Marshall states that the other connected device cannot start playback until the first device is paused: pairing troubleshooting.

Give playback to the device you want to use

  1. Check the Bluetooth lists on nearby phones, tablets, and computers for an active Emberton III connection.
  2. Pause audio on the device that is currently playing. Closing an app is not always necessary; pausing the stream is the relevant test.
  3. On the device you want to use, select the Emberton III as the audio output if the operating system presents a separate output selector.
  4. Start playback again.

If you need one device to have exclusive control while testing, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on the other nearby device. Restore it after the test rather than deleting every remembered pairing.

Fix Bluetooth dropouts after a successful connection

Pairing and dropouts are different faults. If the Emberton III appears as connected and audio starts, but the sound stops or becomes intermittent, improve the radio path before deleting pairings or resetting the speaker.

Reduce distance

Place the speaker and source device closer together and test with both in the same room. Once playback is stable, increase the distance gradually to find whether range is the trigger.

Remove physical obstacles

Walls, doors, cabinets, and a body between the devices can weaken the signal. Marshall’s dropout guidance specifically recommends moving the devices closer and removing obstacles such as walls or doors: Bluetooth connection troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move away from potential interference

Keep the speaker away from electronics that may use the same frequency range. Marshall lists microwave ovens, wireless network adapters, and fluorescent lights as examples of possible interference sources. Turn off or move one suspect source at a time, then replay the same audio so you can identify a change rather than guessing.

Test a controlled setup

  1. Put the source device within a short, unobstructed distance of the speaker.
  2. Pause or disconnect other nearby devices that might be using the Emberton III.
  3. Move away from a microwave, wireless network adapter, or fluorescent light.
  4. Play continuously for several minutes.
  5. If playback is stable, restore your normal room layout one change at a time.

A stable controlled test followed by dropouts only in one location points to distance, obstacles, or interference rather than a failed pairing record.

Use the Marshall Bluetooth app for erratic behavior

For behavior that does not fit a simple pairing or dropout pattern, Marshall recommends connecting the speaker to the Marshall Bluetooth app and following its instructions to check for firmware updates. The official guidance does not establish a universal current firmware number, so use the version and instructions shown by the app rather than relying on an older number found elsewhere: erratic-behavior troubleshooting.

  1. First establish a Bluetooth connection using the pairing steps above.
  2. Open the Marshall Bluetooth app and add or select the Emberton III when prompted.
  3. Follow the app’s firmware-check instructions.
  4. Keep the speaker connected and follow every on-screen instruction if an update is offered.
  5. After the app finishes, test pairing and playback again before deciding whether to reset the speaker.

Firmware updates are not removed by a factory reset. The reset returns user settings to their original state while leaving firmware updates in place.

Factory-reset the Emberton III only after the simpler checks

A reset is the escalation step for persistent pairing or erratic behavior. It removes user settings and means the speaker must be set up again, so do not use it as the first response to a device that merely needs pairing mode or a paused second source.

Before holding the button

  • Remove EMBERTON III from every source device you plan to reconnect.
  • Also remove EMBERTON III [LE] if that entry appears.
  • Pause playback and move nearby sources out of the way so the speaker can be tested cleanly after the reset.
  • If the app offered a firmware update, complete that check first.

Reset procedure

  1. Turn on the Emberton III.
  2. Press and hold the Bluetooth button for seven seconds.
  3. Release it when the indicator flashes quickly and the speaker restarts.
  4. Wait for the restart to finish.
  5. Repeat the normal pairing sequence: enable Bluetooth on the source, hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly, and select EMBERTON III.

Marshall states that “A factory reset will restore Emberton III to its original settings, excluding any firmware updates.” Read the complete procedure at the official factory-reset guide. The seven-second hold is specific to initiating this documented reset; a shorter hold is used to enter ordinary pairing mode.

Pair again after a reset

Because the reset deletes user settings, treat the next connection as a first-time setup rather than expecting an automatic return to your previous arrangement.

  1. Confirm that the speaker has restarted.
  2. On the source device, open Bluetooth and start a fresh scan.
  3. Hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly.
  4. Select EMBERTON III from the newly discovered devices.
  5. Play audio from that source, then reconnect any second device one at a time.
  6. If two devices are connected, remember that the device already playing must be paused before the other can begin playback.

Adding devices one at a time makes it clear whether a later connection or playback handoff recreates the original symptom.

Platform checks that prevent false diagnosis

The Emberton III’s pairing process is model-specific, but the source device can still be the limiting factor. Use these checks without changing the speaker’s settings:

  • Bluetooth switch: Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, not merely that the settings page is open.
  • Correct output: A source can remain connected to the speaker while routing sound to built-in speakers, headphones, a monitor, or another Bluetooth device. Select the Emberton III in the system’s audio-output control.
  • Airplane or battery restrictions: If the source has a mode that disables radios or aggressively suspends background connections, turn it off temporarily while testing.
  • One source at a time: Disable Bluetooth on nearby devices during the first clean test so multipoint does not obscure the result.
  • System restart: If the source’s Bluetooth list is frozen or scanning never completes, restart that phone, tablet, or computer before altering the speaker.

These checks do not replace pairing mode. The speaker must still show the slow blue pulse before the source can discover it as a new device.

A practical decision path

Use this order to avoid taking a destructive step too early:

  1. Not visible: Turn on the source’s Bluetooth, turn on the Emberton III, and hold its Bluetooth button for the slow blue pulse.
  2. Visible but rejected: Remove the saved Emberton III entry, then pair again.
  3. Connected but silent: Check the selected audio output and pause the other device if multipoint is active.
  4. Playback cuts out: Reduce distance, remove walls or doors from the path, and move away from microwaves, wireless network adapters, and fluorescent lights.
  5. Still erratic: Use the Marshall Bluetooth app to check firmware instructions.
  6. Still failing: Remove both possible Emberton entries and perform the seven-second factory reset, then set the speaker up again.

This sequence preserves saved settings for as long as possible and reserves the reset for problems that survive pairing, playback-ownership, radio-path, and firmware checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When troubleshooting is no longer enough

If the Emberton III cannot enter pairing mode, repeatedly restarts during the reset, or fails in a clean test with one source at close range after the documented steps, consult Marshall’s support and repair resources. Keep the speaker’s behavior, the source device and operating-system version, and the exact LED response available when you contact support. That information distinguishes a discovery problem from a power, firmware, or hardware fault.

Do not assume that a routine pairing failure requires replacement. The official troubleshooting path starts with pairing mode, removal of stale entries, playback-state checks, and radio-environment changes; replacement or repair is appropriate only after those steps fail.

Quick reference

Task Exact action Result or consequence
Enter pairing mode Hold the Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly. The source can discover EMBERTON III.
Clear a stale connection Remove the saved Emberton III entry, then scan and pair again. Creates a fresh pairing record without resetting all speaker settings.
Resolve competing playback Pause the device currently playing and select the Emberton III as the desired output. Allows the other connected device to start playback.
Address dropouts Move devices closer, remove walls or doors, and avoid listed interference sources. Improves the Bluetooth radio path.
Check software Use the Marshall Bluetooth app and follow its firmware instructions. Applies any update the app offers; do not rely on an unverified version number.
Factory reset Remove EMBERTON III and EMBERTON III [LE] if present; with the speaker on, hold Bluetooth for seven seconds until the indicator flashes quickly and it restarts. User settings are deleted, firmware updates remain, and setup must be repeated.
