Most Bluetooth problems on the Sony ULT TOWER 5 (SRS-ULT500) come from one of four states: the speaker is on another function, it is not in pairing mode, Bluetooth has been disabled on the speaker, or the source device connected but is sending audio somewhere else. Set the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button to enter pairing mode, and select ULT TOWER 5 on your phone or computer. Keep a phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) during setup. A double-flashing Bluetooth indicator means pairing mode; a steady light means an active connection.

Use the least disruptive fix first. Re-enter pairing mode or toggle Bluetooth back on before restarting. Restarting normally preserves pairing records, while initialization erases every pairing and restores defaults.

Understand what is failing: pairing, connection, or audio routing

Pairing is the one-time registration that lets a phone or computer remember the speaker. Connection is the active Bluetooth link after that registration. A device can be paired but not connected, connected but muted, or connected while another device has control of playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ULT TOWER 5 can remember up to eight paired devices and maintain connections with two Bluetooth devices at once. It plays music from only one connected device at a time. Stereo Pair and Party Chain disable the two-device multipoint behavior, so a new source may not take over until another connection is ended.

Check the speaker’s function and Bluetooth indicator

  1. Turn on the ULT TOWER 5.
  2. Rotate the FUNCTION dial until BLUETOOTH is selected.
  3. Read the Bluetooth indicator before changing settings.
Indicator state Meaning
Double flashing No pairing information is available for the current operation, and the speaker is ready for pairing.
Slow flashing The speaker is searching for a previously paired device.
Steady light A Bluetooth connection is established.
Indicator off The speaker’s Bluetooth function is deactivated, or Bluetooth is not the selected function.

For a new phone, a replacement computer, or any additional source, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button while the function is set to BLUETOOTH. Wait for the voice guidance saying “Pairing” and for the indicator to double-flash. Pairing mode normally ends after about five minutes. If setup takes longer, press the BLUETOOTH button again and restart the selection process.

Do not confuse slow flashing with pairing mode. Slow flashing means the speaker is looking for a device it already knows. Double flashing is the state you need when registering a new source. Once the indicator is steady, the Bluetooth link exists; selecting that link as the media output is still a separate operating-system step.

Pair an Android phone or iPhone

Sony’s model-specific instructions are in Connecting with an Android smartphone or iPhone via a BLUETOOTH connection. The following sequence applies to both platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the speaker and phone

  • Put the phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the speaker during setup.
  • Keep the speaker connected to AC power or make sure its built-in battery has sufficient charge.
  • Turn on Bluetooth in the phone’s settings.
  • Set the speaker to the BLUETOOTH function and start pairing mode so the indicator double-flashes.

Complete the registration

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth device list.
  2. Tap ULT TOWER 5 when it appears.
  3. If a passkey is requested, enter 0000.
  4. Wait for the indicator to change from flashing to steady and listen for the connection notification sound.

If ULT TOWER 5 is missing, do not repeatedly tap the phone’s scan control while the speaker is out of pairing mode. Press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button again, wait for “Pairing” and double flashing, then refresh the phone’s list. If another phone reconnects first, disable Bluetooth on that phone temporarily and repeat the steps.

Pairing is normally performed once per source. After registration, use the saved ULT TOWER 5 entry to reconnect rather than creating a new entry every time. If you deliberately want to register another phone, put the speaker into pairing mode again; the additional-device procedure is not the same as simply turning Bluetooth on.

Pair with a Windows 11 computer

Sony’s Windows procedure is documented in Connecting with a computer via a BLUETOOTH connection (Windows). Sony describes Windows 11 and notes that the instructions are examples; not every computer configuration has been tested.

  1. Wake the Windows 11 PC and turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Open Settings and select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and wait for the list.
  4. Put the speaker in BLUETOOTH pairing mode if it is not already double-flashing.
  5. Select ULT TOWER 5 and wait for Windows to report that the device is connected.
  6. Select the speaker icon in Windows sound controls and choose ULT TOWER 5 as the output device.

If Windows reports a successful connection but no sound plays, check that the computer is not muted, that the application itself is not muted, and that the output selector is not still set to the built-in speakers, a monitor, or headphones. Disconnecting and reconnecting the ULT TOWER 5 from the output selector can force Windows to refresh the audio route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the computer does not list the speaker, leave the Add device window open only after putting the speaker into double-flashing pairing mode. A speaker that is merely slow-flashing is searching for an earlier source and may not be advertised as a new device. Sony’s Windows instructions are an example procedure, so a custom-built or specially configured PC can present different menus.

Pair with a Mac running macOS 12.7 or later

Use Sony’s Connecting with a computer via a BLUETOOTH connection (Mac) procedure for macOS 12.7 or later.

  1. Open the Mac’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Set the ULT TOWER 5 to BLUETOOTH and press its BLUETOOTH button to enter pairing mode.
  3. Select ULT TOWER 5 in the available-device list and confirm the connection.
  4. Open the Mac’s sound controls and select ULT TOWER 5 under Output Device.

A Mac can show the speaker as connected while continuing to send audio to another output. Selecting the speaker under Output Device is a separate step from pairing. Sony cautions that built-to-order or specially configured computers may behave differently from the example procedure.

Fix “connected but no sound”

On a phone

  • Open the phone’s media-output picker and select ULT TOWER 5.
  • Raise the phone’s media volume and the speaker’s volume; check that neither is muted.
  • Pause audio on another phone that is also connected to the speaker.
  • Move the phone close to the speaker and retry if the connection is unstable.

On Windows

  • Open the taskbar sound selector and choose ULT TOWER 5.
  • Check the application’s own output setting if it has one.
  • Verify that Windows has not switched to a monitor, dock, headset, or internal speaker.

On Mac

  • Open Sound settings and set ULT TOWER 5 as the Output Device.
  • Check the application volume and the Mac’s output volume.
  • Pause another connected source before testing playback again.

Bluetooth pairing proves only that the devices exchanged identification information. It does not guarantee that the operating system selected the speaker for media output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test with a simple audio source after selecting the speaker output. If that plays, the Bluetooth link is working and the problem is specific to the original application’s mute, volume, or output setting. If no source produces sound, check the speaker and system volumes again before deleting the pairing.

Stop an old device from taking the connection

A previously connected phone or computer can reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is enabled on both the source and the speaker. This can make a new source appear unable to connect even though the speaker is working normally.

  1. On the old phone or computer, turn Bluetooth off or disconnect ULT TOWER 5 from its device list.
  2. On the intended source, open Bluetooth settings and select ULT TOWER 5.
  3. If both sources remain connected, pause playback on the unwanted source and start playback from the intended one.

The speaker supports two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, but only one source supplies music at a time. Stereo Pair and Party Chain turn off multipoint, so those modes can require disconnecting another source before pairing or playback works as expected.

Being able to store eight devices does not mean all eight can control playback simultaneously. When troubleshooting, first identify which source is actively connected, then identify which source is selected for audio. Removing every saved device is unnecessary unless you perform initialization.

  1. Make sure the speaker is on.
  2. Press and hold ECHO and LIGHT simultaneously for about five seconds.
  3. Release the buttons when Bluetooth is activated and the indicator lights.
  4. Repeat the same five-second hold if you intentionally need to deactivate Bluetooth.

After reactivating Bluetooth, rotate the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH and enter pairing mode before searching from the phone or computer.

If the indicator remains off, verify the FUNCTION dial before repeating the button combination. An off indicator can mean either that Bluetooth itself is deactivated or that another function is selected; the dial and the ECHO-plus-LIGHT toggle address different conditions.

Restart the ULT TOWER 5 without deleting pairings

Restarting is the appropriate next step when the speaker is unresponsive or pairing trouble continues after the basic checks. Sony’s instructions are at Restarting the speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press and hold the speaker’s power button for about 10 seconds.
  2. The speaker turns off and then turns back on.
  3. Wait for startup to finish, select BLUETOOTH, and try the connection again.

Sony says a restart retains pairing information. Settings such as volume, the selected function, or sound settings may change, so check those before testing audio.

Initialize only after restarting fails

Initialization is a factory-settings reset, not an ordinary restart. It deletes all Bluetooth pairing information and restores changed settings. Use it only when the speaker still has an operating problem after restarting.

  1. Turn the speaker on; initialization cannot be performed while it is off.
  2. Press and hold the playback button and the ULT button together for at least five seconds.
  3. Keep holding until the speaker turns off. Sony’s Help Guide states: “While the speaker is turned on, press and hold the playback button and the ULT button on the speaker for 5 seconds or more until the speaker turns off.”
  4. Turn the speaker on again.
  5. On every phone or computer that previously used it, remove or forget ULT TOWER 5 from the Bluetooth list.
  6. Repeat the full pairing procedure for each source.

See Sony’s Initializing the speaker page before using this procedure.

Initialization is the most disruptive documented fix because it removes the speaker’s knowledge of every source, not just the device currently giving trouble. It is therefore not the first response to a missing device, an expired five-minute pairing window, or a wrong output selection. Those conditions can normally be corrected without deleting saved pairings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Action Use it when Pairing records Disruption
Re-enter pairing mode The speaker is not discoverable or the five-minute window expired Preserved Low
Toggle Bluetooth Bluetooth was disabled on the speaker Preserved Low
Restart (power about 10 seconds) The speaker is unresponsive or pairing trouble persists Retained according to Sony Moderate; some settings may change
Initialize (playback + ULT, 5+ seconds while on) Restart did not resolve an operating problem Deleted Highest; defaults restored

A quick, repeatable diagnosis sequence

When the symptom is unclear, work through the states in order rather than repeating the same phone scan. First confirm the model is SRS-ULT500 and turn the speaker on. Next set the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH and observe the indicator. If it is off, reactivate Bluetooth with ECHO and LIGHT for about five seconds. If it is slow-flashing, press BLUETOOTH to request pairing mode. If it is double-flashing, immediately search from the intended phone or computer while it remains within 1 m.

Check compatibility and the model before escalating

Confirm that the label or Bluetooth name identifies the speaker as SRS-ULT500 / ULT TOWER 5. The button combinations above are model-specific. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3, the 2.4 GHz band, and the A2DP, AVRCP, SPP, and PBP profiles on its SRS-ULT500 Specifications page. Bluetooth version 5.3 alone does not guarantee identical behavior with every phone or computer; the source device’s operating system and Bluetooth implementation also matter.

Do not infer a hardware failure solely because one source cannot pair. Test the speaker with the documented mode and indicator sequence, then try another compatible source if available. A failure limited to one computer or phone points toward that source’s Bluetooth or audio-output settings rather than proving the speaker is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No adapter, cable, or special repair tool is required for Sony’s pairing, Bluetooth-toggle, restart, or initialization procedures. Avoid changing several variables at once: record whether the indicator was double-flashing, slow-flashing, steady, or off, and note which source was connected. That makes it easier to identify whether the fault follows the speaker or one source device.

When to use Sony support

If the speaker will not enter BLUETOOTH mode, the indicator never responds after Bluetooth is reactivated, or initialization does not complete, use the model-specific SRS-ULT500 support page. It provides the current Help Guide, troubleshooting information, repair details, and contact options. Sony also maintains a broader Wireless Speaker troubleshooting guide.

Have the exact model, the source device and operating-system version, the indicator behavior, and the steps already attempted ready for support. That information distinguishes a pairing-mode problem from a source-device compatibility issue and avoids repeating an initialization unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ULT TOWER 5 not appear in my Bluetooth list?

Set the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button, and wait for the “Pairing” voice prompt and double-flashing indicator. Keep the phone or computer within 1 m (3.2 ft). If Bluetooth was disabled on the speaker, hold ECHO and LIGHT together for about five seconds first. Pairing mode normally ends after about five minutes, so enter it again if the window expired.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a slow-flashing Bluetooth light mean?

Slow flashing means the speaker is searching for a previously paired device. It is different from double flashing, which indicates pairing mode for a new or additional source. Press the BLUETOOTH button while BLUETOOTH is selected on the FUNCTION dial to enter the new-device pairing state.

What passkey should I use when pairing?

If the phone or computer asks for a passkey during the documented pairing process, Sony specifies 0000.

Why does my phone say connected but the speaker is silent?

A Bluetooth connection does not automatically select the speaker for media output. Choose ULT TOWER 5 in the phone’s media-output picker, raise both device volumes, and pause playback on another connected source. On computers, select ULT TOWER 5 as the system Output Device and check the application’s own mute and output controls.

How do I stop an old phone from reconnecting?

Turn Bluetooth off on the old phone or disconnect ULT TOWER 5 from its Bluetooth settings. Then select ULT TOWER 5 on the intended source. The speaker can maintain two Bluetooth connections, but only one source plays music at a time. Stereo Pair and Party Chain disable multipoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will restarting erase my pairings?

Sony says restarting by holding the power button for about 10 seconds retains pairing information, although volume, function, or sound settings may change. Initialization is different: holding playback and ULT for at least five seconds while the speaker is on deletes all pairing information and restores defaults.

Can I initialize the speaker while it is turned off?

No. Turn the ULT TOWER 5 on first, then hold playback and ULT together for at least five seconds until it turns off. Afterward, forget ULT TOWER 5 on each previous source and pair again.

Does Bluetooth 5.3 guarantee that every phone or computer will work?

No. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the A2DP, AVRCP, SPP, and PBP profiles, but source operating systems and Bluetooth implementations can behave differently. A problem limited to one source does not by itself prove that the speaker has a hardware fault.

The Bottom Line

For the Sony ULT TOWER 5, select BLUETOOTH, enter pairing mode with the BLUETOOTH button, and choose ULT TOWER 5 within 1 m of the speaker. Use the indicator to distinguish pairing mode, searching, and an active connection; then select the speaker as the audio output. Disconnect old sources before escalating. Restart with the power button before using initialization, because initialization deletes every saved pairing.
